Thoroughly Modern Millie (2002 Original Broadway Cast) [Cast Recording]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Although it's based on the 1967 movie of the same name, Thoroughly Modern Millie is almost thoroughly new. Composer Jeanine Tesori (Violet) and lyricist Dick Scanlan wrote a whole batch of songs, while retaining a couple from the movie--including the Jimmy van Heusen-Sammy Cahn title tune--and recycling even older material (look for Victor Herbert's "I'm Falling in Love with Someone" and the inventively arranged "Nuttycracker Suite"). Miraculously, the show, set during the jazz age, doesn't feel stitched together, and Tesori does a great job cranking out swinging melodies. Sutton Foster is appropriately brassy as Millie, but she can also tone it down, as in the beginning of "Gimme Gimme" (of course, she then proceeds to project up to the last rafters as the song builds to its climax). Harriet Harris, as nasty Mrs. Meers, steals the show with "They Don't Know." Close your eyes, listen to her, and you'll be back in Broadway's golden age. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Excellent Musical, But Product Quality - Eh.......2007-07-15
I absolutely love the musical so I'm thrilled with the cd.
My problem was not with the quality of the cd, but with the plastic case. The cd cases always come cracked. Although it doesn't affect the quality of the cd itself, it's rather disheartening that Amazon charges customers for its poor shipping.
MODERNIZE your music collection!!!.......2007-07-13
This is an AMAZING musical and great album. It is sure to jazz-up any music collection! BUY THIS ALBUM NOW!
A must to add to your collection.......2007-05-18
I was very fortunate enough to see this on Broadway. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen! The music has just enough jazz and contemporary vive that any musical lover would enjoy! It's also got tapping in it! Sutton is simply awesome in this role and all of the cast can really belt out their songs. Harriet Harris is phenominal in her role as Mrs. Meers. I highly recommend this to all broadway lovers! It's one to add to your collection!
Delightful.......2006-06-12
The music takes a little bit to grow on you, but boy, does it! It's wonderful, charming, romantic, funny--just like the play itself. I loved almost every song and I was really impressed with "Long As I'm Here With You"-- I thought it was an old song written back in the twenties, because it so sounded like one. The cast is absolutely energetic and endearing, and Sutton Foster just *rocks*. Definitely worth the money.
YOU WILL LOVE IT.......2006-02-17
If you like musicals, you will NOT REGRET purchasing this musical soundtrack. JUST DO IT. It's so great, you will be listening to it forever. I also saw the show at the Kennedy Center in D.C. and it's one of the best I've ever seen. (And I've seen A LOT.)
Have Fun!

Album Description
*A specially priced 2CD set with over 110 minutes of some of the greatest film music in the history of cinema.
*New digital recordings in spectacular and sound performed by the acclaimed City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and National Youth Jazz Band.
*Includes world premiere recordings from "The Birdman Of Alcatraz," "Thoroughly Modern Millie," "Airplane!" and "An American Werewolf In London."
*In 2004 the world of cinema lost one of the most iconic figures in film composing. In a career that spanned half-a-century and over 250 films, Elmer Bernstein was responsible for writing the music to many of the greatest and most loved movies of all time ranging from "The Ten Commandments," "The Magnificent Seven" and "The Great Escape," through to "True Grit" and "Airplane!" This collection has been lovingly created and compiled as a tribute to a genius and true master of the art of film scoring.
Customer Reviews:
Sad Really Sad.......2007-05-13
These CDs don't meet the standards I would have expected from Elmer Bernstein's wonderful film music.
*Boring*
It just didn't have the energy one would expect from "The Magnificent Seven" and "The Man with the Golden Arm". I think the City of Prague and National Youth Jazz Orchestras were bargain orchestras used to make an inexpensive CD set of one of my favorite film composers. The conducting and arrangements were what made this an obviously bad album.
An excellent movie themes antology by ELMER BERNSTEIN.......2007-05-10
Silva Screen Records, presents this antology of the music from the late great composer/conductor ELMER BERNSTEIN, who supervised this recording just before die.
Played the The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, and conducted by his one time assistant James Fitzpatrick
Recorded in HDCD and Dolby Surround
Excellent.......2007-04-22
it's unfortunate that more tracks weren't able to be recorded as theree was a good 15-20 minutes of space remaining on both discs. Regardless, this is an excellent sampler, especially in conjunction with Varese's Bernstein sampler including rare stuff like the Black Cualdron.
With regards to this silva set, these recordings range back to 1994, with Sons of Katie Elder and True Grit being recorded for a John Wayne CD and Bridge At Remagen for a CD of classic War themes. The Great Escape was also recorded for that CD, but producer James Fitzpatrick opted to record a new arrangement (same with Magnificent Seven). In '97, The Buccaneer for included on a Swashbucklers disc, while Heavy Metal was on the popular 'Space and Beyond' compilation. In '98, the world premiere recording of Airplane first appeared on a DISASTERS film disc. So while it may technically be the world premiere RECORDING it certainly is not the world premiere CD RELEASE of that recording. Ghostbusters was included on Space 3: Beyond the Final Frontier, the second followup to the popular 'Space and Beyond'. Fast forward to 2002 and 4 recordings first appeared on WAY OUT WEST: ESSENTIAL WESTERN FILM MUSIC COLLECTION VOLUME TWO, those being The Comancheros, The Hallelujah Trail, The Scalphunters and The Shootist. Man With the Golden Arm and Walk on the Wild are from Silva's JAZZ IN FILM cd.
The remaining tracks were all newly recorded for this release. They are of course the strongest tracks, seeing as the City of Prague Philharmonic has improved over time. I do wonder though why they did not include the older arrangements of Great Escape and Mag. Seven as bonus tracks.
I also recommend the simultaneously released '40 years of Film Music: Jerry Goldsmith' for another great set honoring a late great film composer.
Great Film Music.......2007-03-09
This is a great recording of some of the best film music ever. From the
great westerns to the Theme from Airplane to music he did for television,
Bernstein was one of the greatest.
Fun, Powerfull music.......2007-02-17
It's great! It brings back memories of my dad. He loved John Wayne and the old cowboys of the Magnificent Seven. But it's nice just to listen and relax (it's not all cowboy music).

Customer Reviews:
Great for Singing Along!.......2007-02-19
My kids take voice lessons. They enjoy being able to sing with the singer and then doing it on their own. Good selection of songs.
Pretty good but not stellar........2005-08-03
I bought this CD to use as a backup for a pageant performance and I'm pretty pleased with it. The songs are in the correct keys and sound pretty darn close to the originals. There aren't any guide vocals which I found to be a blessing; no more listening to some half-rate singer faintly chortling along in the background! There are a few parts (mainly the big orchestra solos) where you can tell that a synthesizer was used versus a real band, but these parts are pretty sparse. The only draw-back to this CD is that there are absolutely no backup vocals so the big finales and chorus sections don't pack the oomph that they do in the live performances. Overall, however, I would recommend this CD for local performances, pageantry, or just for some good karaoke time.
Great CD.......2005-01-03
I love it, and what I especially LIKE is that there is NO background-chorus. If the Dutch version of the show starts next season we can sing along with the Dutch lyrics, without a English chorus.
Great!!
Gotta Love The Cheesey-Ness.......2004-10-05
This CD is great! The background tracks are quite close to the actual orchestrations and are fun to dance around to (in regards to Hairspray) and great to sing along with (in regards to both musicals). Both musicals are a little cheesey and fun by themselves, but this CD makes me appreciate them even more. I love Hairspray especially, but all songs in both musicals on this CD are at the right tempos and in the right keys. Great to perform to if you're a serious performer or just a fun-loving karaoke singer. The ONLY fault with the cd is there are NO back-up vocals on ANY of the tracks, so the ensemble numbers are a bit...quiet. Not as dynamic for a solo voice, but all-in-all a wonderful cd and a must for any musical theatre performer. 4 Stars!

redux.......2007-07-06
Four of the songs on this CD (Oklahoma, Music of the Night, Cabaret, and All That Jazz) were on the earlier Ultimate Broadway. Of all the shows that have been on Broadway over the past 70+ years, including the ones that are currently running, there is no excuse for repeats!
Moderate Quality.......2003-06-20
I believe that the show selection for this CD was excellent. However the song selection and song order were not. Why pick "Your Daddy's Son" from Ragtime when you can have the amazing and fantastic "Prologue" from the same show. Also I believe that a mistake was made by slecting "I Don Quixote" from Man of La Mancha instead of the much more listenable "Impossible Dream." Also the overture from Gypsy is not the proper song to start out a CD. Perhaps the "Overture" from The Phantom of the Opera.
This is however an excellent example of showtunes for inexperienced members of the theatrical world.
POOR EXCUSE FOR SOME GOOD THEATER MUSIC.......2003-05-20
The best of Broadway? Sure, if you consider the best of Broadway only those songs taken only from RCA Victor cast recordings. Expect the expected: Tracks from "Ragtime," "Chicago," "42nd Street" and "Man of La Mancha," sung by the likes of Audra
McDonald, Bebe Neuwirth, Jerry Orbach and Brian Stokes Mitchell. Including a live recording of Barbara Cook warbling "Losing My Mind" from her "Mostly Sondheim" CD isn't exactly kosher. But then again, neither is this gimmick-riddled release. Curtain up?
Half-way, maybe. Light the lights? Dim them, please.

ANN DEE~MYSTERY SINGER OF ROSE OF WASHINGTON SQUARE! .......2006-06-12
Thoroughly Modern Millie is a corny little movie filled with bloated egos...a classic and very soulful singer Miss Ann Dee (Angela DeSpirito) sold her legendary San Francisco "Ann Dee's 440 Club" a famed night club where Ann developed and showcased numerous big name talent such as Lenny Bruce, Ernestine Anderson, Johnny Mathis and many others to come to LA to embark on a solo singing career and by this time Ann Dee was already well into her forties..."Free Again" is a timeless classic Capitol Records lp filled with thrilling performances including the definitive version of "If He Walked Into My Life" from the musical "Mame" and the brilliant and hauntingly gorgeous medley "Carnival/This Dream" which is high vocal art at its very finest! "Free Again" was produced by avant-garde producer David Axelrod and beautifully arranged by the legendary Ernie Freeman...Ann Dee was so incredible in concert performing these wonderous classics with such passion and tremendous vocal beauty that she received numerous standing ovations every night over the years in always packed-out clubs (was the wildly successful "house singer" at the Beverly Hills "Ye Little Club" for many years) where one could find a wide array of the famous such as Judy Garland, Timi Yuro, Edith Piaf, Toti Fields, Carmen McRae, Johnny Ray, Margaret Whiting, Dorothy Collins, Yvonne De Carlo, Gordon MacRae, Alexis Smith, Joanie Sommers, Regis Philbin to name just a few in her adoring audience...hopefully this lost vocal masterpiece will someday be released on Compact Disc if Capitol Records ever wakes up and realizes what a glorious treasure they have in their vault deserving to be remastered and released! Ann Dee was next cast in this lame and superficial Hollywood Musical and was thrilled but soon found that she would be pushed into the background by the greedy "stars" of this movie who were threatened by her magnificent talent (especially vocal!) and didn't want to share the spotlight or residuals with her...this was why Ann Dee did not receive any billing for her glorious performance that is clearly the finest vocal on this otherwise tired soundtrack filled with cartoon like baffonish performances. Ann was deeply hurt by all of this and the real kicker is that Ann Dee received no billing at all on the original soundtrack lp for her sublime performance of "Rose Of Washington Square" and was listed only as "vocal blues singer"...for shame and this needs to be corrected!!!! May Ann Dee rest in peace and she is loved and missed by many...and the 5-Stars are all for you Angel as you earned every one of them!!!
FUN SOUNDTRACK/BAD SOUND.......2005-02-05
"Thoroughly Modern Millie" was probably the most superficially enjoyable movie that Julie Andrews ever made--no depth at all, but loads of fun. The soundtrack album is also fun to listen to, but probably won't mean as much to people who've never seen the film.
The only reason I gave this CD 3 stars is its poor sound quality. I've still got the record album and believe me, the CD sounds EXACTLY like the record except for the absence of surface noise: thin, tinny, and with little bass response. The CD mastering gives no added clarity or frequency response. In short, the engineers obviously used the same master that the record was made from, a master than was equalized and compressed within an inch of its life. If they had bothered to go back to the original session tapes, this album would have sounded much better. You can hear the proof on the compilation CD that Rhino put out several years ago called "Thoroughly Modern Julie." The only song that's from the movie is the title track, but you will be amazed at the difference in sound quality: this version has much better clarity, presence, and frequency response. Let's hope that someday "Thoroughly Modern Millie" will be given the audio restoration it deserves.
Thouroughly Modern Millie-a great CD for everyone!.......2002-12-09
As a twelve year old broadway lover, when I first saw the play I immediatly fell in love with it. The music (all included on the CD) is so wonderful, everyone deserves to know about it!!!!
The Thouroughly Modern Millie music is appropriate, and funny. There is not a large amount of bad language and is very clean. The music has a fast tempo and a jumpy sound. It makes you want to jump up and dance! I would buy this CD for sure- with no doubt! From what I've told you, wouldn't you agree?
a fantastic score.......2002-12-04
THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE was producer Ross Hunter's attempt to re-create THE BOY FRIEND, in which Julie Andrews had starred on Broadway. MGM held the movie rights to BOY FRIEND and would not sell them to Universal. Eventually MGM would turn THE BOY FRIEND into a rather-misguided film starring Christopher Gable and Twiggy.
The story of THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE concerns one Millie Dillmount (Julie Andrews), a simple girl from the country who comes to the Big Smoke looking for love, excitement and most importantly, Mr Right. Along the way Millie meets up with demure Miss Dorothy (Mary Tyler Moore), hooks up with a lively paperclip salesman Jimmy (James Fox) and fights off white-slaver Mrs Meers (Beatrice Lillie). Joining in the fun are carefree society dame Muzzy van Hossmere (Carol Channing) and Millie's dashing boss Mr Trevor Graydon (John Gavin).
The songs are a perfect blend of 20's standards as well as brand-new numbers. Julie is at her best singing "Jimmy", "Poor Butterfly" (which includes the scene dialogue that accompanies it in the film), and the catchy Title Song.
Carol Channing adds her brassy vocals to the showstopping "Jazz Baby" and "Do It Again". James Fox is wonderful during the "Tapioca" number.
With THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE currently gracing Broadway in an all-new production, now is the perfect time to fall in love with the fantastic film score.
Highly-recommended.
A class act!!.......2002-11-14
Wonderful Oscar winner score!. One of the most remarkable works by Andre Previn and Elmer Bernstein. The "title song", "Tapioca" and "Poor Butterfly" are my favourite ones. I've been waiting for this CD a long time and finally it's a honor to listen to it.
Thanks for giving me the chance of remembering this unforgetable soundtrack.

This compilation gives a pretty good idea of what you'll hear if you buy a ticket for a Broadway show in 2003. Leaving revivals aside (there's no Man of La Mancha or Gypsy, for instance), the tracks tend to encompass contemporary songwriters on the Great White Way. Fittingly, the CD begins and concludes with numbers from Hairspray, arguably the most vibrant new pop musical to come down the pike in ages. Sandwiched between are songs by authors making a belated stage debut (Mel Brooks and The Producers, Billy Joel and Movin' Out), arty newcomers (Janine Tesori and ) and seasoned pros (Alan Menken and Howard Ashman with Beauty and the Beast). Of course, the most seasoned pro of them all may well be Giacomo Puccini, making a belated Broadway debut thanks to Baz Lurhrmann's production of La Boheme. The addition of Chicago's "All That Jazz" (from the movie, not the show!) reeks of opportunism, but overall it doesn't spoil a varied collection that should appeal to broad-minded pop lovers everywhere. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
What do I need with This?.......2003-07-06
If you are a broadway passer-by, someone who looks to getting to know just what's on broadway and not what's it like, someone who says he's seen all of the broadway shows after reading the "what's on listings" in the papers this is a CD for you. I don't own the CD but own all of the Cds from which songs were taken to make this CD. every musical has it's own style and kind of music, and this CD doesn't even take all the highlights. If you are into really experiencing something when listening to a cd, if you are a real broadway-lover and you are interested in modern musical-writing, every one of the original cast recordings (from which songs were taken to this CD-hairpsray, producers, millie, aida, b&b, boheme, moving out) will be a much bigger enjoyment for you than this one. and most preferabely- all of them! :)
