She Loves Me (1963 Original Broadway Cast) [Cast Recording]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
This utterly charming musical had a disappointing Broadway debut in 1963 despite the high-powered pairing of director Harold Prince (his first musical) and the songwriting team of Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick (Fiddler on the Roof). Thanks to a legendary cast album that took up an unprecedented two LPs (74 minutes on one CD), the show gathered a loyal following, eventually becoming a repertory staple and earning Broadway and London revivals in the 1990s. Based on the same Hungarian play as the 1940 James Stewart film The Shop Around the Corner (and its successors, In the Good Old Summertime and You've Got Mail), the sweet romantic story follows two shop clerks who can't stand each other but are also anonymous pen pals. Barbara Cook sang one of her best roles as Amalia, Jack Cassidy won a Tony as the cad Kodaly, and the rest of the cast is also perfect. The booklet includes production photos, a loving appreciation, and a detailed synopsis, but no lyrics. --David Horiuchi

Joyful Joyful Joyful.......2007-05-11
When I was in high school living on MacDill AFB there was an adult theatre group doing this production. I got the leading Amelia role, then also designed and built sets. Of anything I have ever performed this was the single most challenging music. I loved every bit of it. What a joy it is to hear the sweet lovely words and tale of romance so fresh now - 35 years later! This story, lyrics and music did flavor my life actions viewing romance with sweet depth. Light, lovely and fun- this is a great piece of musical experience.
We love "She Loves Me"!.......2007-01-09
Having just seen a wonderful local production of this revival, we wanted to hear the score again. The Broadway cast is great, too. While it fits the play perfectly, the music grows as an independent joy.
Underated Gem.......2006-07-22
This show is one of the best from the 60's. Barbara Cook is sublime, and the rest of the cast are practically at the same level. The 94 revival was also an absolute delight. the cast then was wonderful, maybe missing Cook, but who can equal her. That CD is wonderful as well. Saw that production several times and loved it more each time I saw it. Have seen Cook several times in concert and her performances of the songs from this show may be even better now.
excellent........really moving!.......2006-01-27
Before I'd heard this CD,I saw 'you've got mail' and absolutely fell in love with it. That started my obsession with Meg Ryan romantic comedies, but i'm over that now, thankfully. Also before i'd heard this CD, I heard a recent recording of Barbra Cook at Carnagie Hall, but none of these songs were on that CD.
Then, after i found out about this musical, I decided to have a listen and see what it was like. Well, I'm sure you know that I thought it was brilliant and now see Barbra Cook as one of the best singers ever to be on broadway. Daniel Massey is quite good, too, but I've never heard anyone else in the role, so I can't compare him to anyone. Barbra Baxley is funny aswell when she sings 'A Trip to the Library'.
Barbra Cook's song 'Dear Friend' is absolutely heart wrenching. More moving than seeing Meg Ryan waiting alone in the resteraunt for someone you know will never turn up. I would definitely reccomed buying this CD, as it is something amazing to listen to. Oh, and the orchestra is brilliant too. I play the violin, but I'll be darned if i could play a bar of that score!
Before "Fiddler".......2005-08-12
Before Bock and Harnick wowed the American Musical Theater with Fiddler on The Roof, they composed and wrote "She Loves Me" an innovative musical comedy (for its time) with no chorus, no dancing (though it was expertly blocked and choreographed); just a stream of wonderful music that is captured perfectly in this original cast recording. Just listening to Barbara Cook's crystal clear soprano voice is worth the price; the late Jack Cassidy, Daniel Massey and Barbara Baxter only add to this perfect recording.

Anyone who doubts the influence and enduring appeal of cast recordings should take note of She Loves Me, an intimate, romantic, and totally charming show by the team of Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick (Fiddler on the Roof) that had a short Broadway run in 1963. The show was kept alive by a legendary and unprecedented two-LP original cast album that spurred numerous regional productions and, 30 years after the original run, this Broadway revival at the Roundabout Theatre. The sweet story (based on the same Hungarian play that inspired the films The Shop Around the Corner, In the Good Old Summertime and You've Got Mail) focuses on two perfume shop coworkers (played by Boyd Gaines, who won a Tony for the role, and Diane Fratantoni) who can't stand each other, unaware they are romantic pen pals. Heading the supporting cast is the always wonderful Sally Mayes, who received a Tony nomination for the role of Ilona, even if she can't match the ditzy defenselessness of Barbara Baxley in the 1963 cast. In fact, it's almost an impossible task for any cast to match the original, but give this revival credit for giving She Loves Me new life where it belongs--on the stage. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
Fun Musical.......2007-03-13
This show couldn't be any more adorable. The music is diverse: touching, compelling, sweet, and hysterically funny -- everything a light musical should be. I highly recommend this cd.
Intimate Recording.......2005-03-02
I first saw this production in a small community theater. That intimate feeling was something I had been hoping this album would keep. And it does! In fact, the voices (especially Arpad) sound exactly like the actors I had seen a decade ago!
First of all, the musical is a gem. Every single tune is a classic, catchy, and one of the most fun musicals to sing along with. Especially "Sounds While Selling," "Tonight at Eight," and "Goodbye, Georg." I love harmonizing and just being corny when no one is watching :)
Skipping the orchestral tracks and "Days Gone By" (the *only* weak tune, and it even gets good at the end), I would listen to the entire album on my commute from work years ago. It really kept me awake and, by the time I arrived home, I was always in a great mood!
This recording has kept the intimate feel of the original production I saw. I fell in love with this musical instantly, glad to have something others didn't. (I love musicals, but it's difficult to think of "The Sound of Music" as one's 'own.')
fine, but not a patch on the original cast album.......2005-02-27
This recording of the 1993 Broadway revival of SHE LOVES ME is a fine summation of the peerless Bock-Harnick score, though the original cast still remains definitive. Diane Fratatoni-Sutherland is a competant Amalia (Judy Kuhn was the original star though left by the time the cast album was recorded). Fratatoni, sounding eerily like original Amalia - Barbara Cook - , is thrilling in her singing, especially the Act One heartbreaker "Dear Friend" and the manic "Where's My Shoe?". Boyd Gaines gives Georg an infectious joy, and Sally Mayes is just about the perfect Ilona. My only gripe about this recording is the putrid sound quality. Microphones are full of annoying reverb and extraonious noises, and detract from the full enjoyment of the performance. Nevertheless, a fine recording for admirers of this score.
The best version of a wonderful show.......2005-02-04
I'm currently cast in a production of this show as Sipos...this is by far the best version of the show on CD. The cast can actually sing and the orchestration is a lot better. Skip the original and spring for this revival. Also, its a lot of fun to hear the singing voice of Aladdin as Arapad and Jafar's voice as the Waiter.
Could be just a bit better.......2001-07-28
I love this musical, I truly do. It is sweet, it is charming, it's easy to listen to. However, I think that Sally Mayes does not quite measure up to Barbara Baxley in the original Broadway cast recording, and I don't think Diane Fratantoni is quite as good as Barbara Cook. Fratantoni goes a little too operatic/beautifully toned vowels on the higher notes on "Where's My Shoe" which takes away some of the character. However, they are both outstanding in the roles, usually with a lot of character in their voices. Boyd Gaines is just as good as Daniel Massey, and the rest of the cast, including Brad Kane are just as good as the original cast. I think, however, that "Tango Tragique" seems to be missing completely from this recording. I don't ever hear it in the background at the cafe! Every song in this show has a purpose, either to advance the plot, or develop a character. There is nothing there that does not tell you something that you need to know, while amusing you at the same time. I also recommmend to you, if you are a Barbara Cook fan, to get the original broadway cast recording of Candide (Leonard Bernstein). To hear more of Brad Kane, get the new remastered soundtrack to Disney's animated movie Aladdin. To hear how versatile Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick are, listen to a recording of Fiddler on the Roof or Fiorello!

Sheer class.......2003-11-13
Back in the seventies, I learned the hard way that you never lend out your Jack albums. While I will never see some of that vinyl again, I welcome the chance to catch up on that and more with the hopefully ever-increasing CD back catalog.
There was something almost mystical about Jack's earlier recordings, and if I had to pick out one album that I would consider my favorite, it would be There's Love... which gave us the Jack anthem And I Love Her.
I know we're all going to disagree over his 'best' work, but with an artist of his caliber, you can only really talk about your favorite albums - another classic being Sings Michel Legrand.
Last I heard the man is still going strong, and still doing sold-out world tours, and from the last recent photo I saw, he's still outrageously handsome, dang it.
A superb double Jack set and from the look of Amazon's excellent database, one of several paired sets. Now I just have to catch up on the rest.
Brilliant.
A WONDERFUL "TWO-FER" BY JACK JONES!.......2002-08-15
This coupling of two of Jack's best albums offers the music lover immeasurable nostalgia, enjoyment and collectability all in one great CD. The first half of this CD latches on to the (then) recent bossa-nova craze and takes a handful of standards and lets Jack 'bossa-nova' his way through them. It's inspiring the way the arrangements sound so tailor made to old chestnuts like THE LAMP IS LOW, the underappreciated Hoagy Carmichael-penned torch song I GET ALONG WITHOUT YOU VERY WELL and the recent broadway hits of the 60's SHE LOVES ME and ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE TRACKS. But the real beauty here is the second half of this CD, the album THERE'S LOVE AND THERE'S LOVE, the charts contributed by Nelson Riddle (the only time he and Jack had the opportunity to work together) Nelson's work with Jack is much like any other work he's done with any other singer - flawless. A Riddle chart always got the best out of the singer, and this is more than evident as Nels and Jack put their indelible stamp on the Beatles' classic ballad, AND I LOVE HER. Other geniune treasures to be found are the old Al Jolson standard, YOU MADE ME LOVE YOU and the lilting WHILE WE'RE YOUNG. You'll find the title track with its lyric from the able hands of Sammy Cahn, THERE'S LOVE AND THERE'S LOVE a cute tune that may border on commercial, but it never comes off that way with Jack's tender reading and Nelson's thoughful chart behind him. A really wonderful "two-fer" to have in your collection!
Incredible Singing!.......2000-04-28
These two Jack Jones albums on the Kapp label from the mid '60's are long overdue on cd! The first album "She Loves Me" features songs with a latin beat, done superbly by Jones. The second album "There's Love & There's Love & There's Love" is a classic, which features the only time that Jack collaborated with the great legendary arranger Nelson Riddle. The songs are sung beautifully and smoothly by Jones, and the arrangements are incredibly lush. The album is an absolute classic. This cd is a must have for any Jack Jones fan and fan of the great popular standards!
Incredible Singing!.......2000-04-27
These two albums by Jack Jones from the mid '60's are a perfect example of what makes Jack Jones so great! "She Loves Me" features songs with a latin beat, done superbly by Jones. "There's Love & There's Love & There's Love" is a classic album featuring the only time that Jack collaborated with the great and legendary arranger Nelson Riddle. The songs are romantic and lush, the singing is silky smooth and top notch. The arrangements are unbelieveable. This cd is a definite must have for any Jack Jones fan!
Two Master Disks from a Vocal Master on 1 CD: Big Deal!.......1999-10-28
Incredible but MCA United Kingdom has done a better work on Jack Jones' Kapp originals than MCA America has. An entire album with arrangements by Nelson Riddle would be enough to enchant our hearts. So imagine one more excellent album in the same CD package.

Barbara Cook is one of today's most accomplished song stylists, and if you don't believe us, just listen to this live album. It's a master class in the art of singing. It documents an evening at Carnegie Hall during which Cook proved that she can dissect and extract the substance out of the simplest of lyrics. One of the best surprises is "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" (from Company), which is taken at an amiable trot and allows the singer to display its humor. Cook is not a swinging singer and uptempo is not her pace; give her a ballad, though, and she'll wring the last drop of emotion out of it. Her version of "Losing My Mind" (here paired with "Not a Day Goes By") is simply astonishing. The singer also performs songs that Sondheim has said he wished he had written, an awful lot of them by Harold Arlen. No complaints here. Guest Malcolm Gets solos on a few songs and duets with Cook on others, including "Let's Face the Music and Dance." This is classic material done masterfully by a classic singer. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Wow!.......2004-02-20
Having read the other reviews there is little more for me to add. I have been a Barbara Cook fan for a longtime and for me, this is one of her best concerts ever. I do, however, prefer the DVD. As with some other reviewers, I do not want to hear Malcolm Gets (as much as I like him) when I want to listen to Barbara. Her flawless interpretation of music is a hard act to follow for any singer! I managed to see this concert 4 times over a year and a half. Each time I saw her the voice was stronger and more assured (I would not have thought that possible). I can't help but think we will have the pleasure of hearing Ms Cook for many years to come. For those people who enjoyed his CD I strongly recommend purchasing the DVD. Barabara's rendition of So Many People is breathtaking (literally, I don't think I breathed once during the entire song). If you ever have opportunity to see her live - go! She has an ability to make you feel as if every song she sings and every word she speaks is directed to you alone. She can take a large venue and make it feel as intimate as your own living room. Having had the pleasure of meeting her I can say she is as youthful and pleasurable in person as she is in her performance.
Everyone Should Whistle.......2003-10-11
After being privileged to attend this concert, I had to own the CD. Once a lyric coloratura and the original Cunegonde in Bernstein's Candide, Ms. Cook has become (in her 70s) a true diva, blessed with a velvety, warm sound. Every note has meaning. Her high B-flat on "Ice Cream" is still the envy of any soprano today. Everyone should whistle after hearing the superb performances on this CD. Even better, though, is the experience of having been in the concert hall for the live performance. Brava, Ms. Cook!
An amazing intro to the body of work of a true master.......2003-06-16
When I first bought tickets for the 'Mostly Sondheim' show on tour (in San Francisco) I figured it couldn't be too bad. Besides, I had only been exposed to a few of his songs (Anyone Can Whistle, Losing My Mind...) and had only seen "A Little Night Music". On the way out of the theater I immediately picked up this recording of the program. It is truly amazing. I immediately began listening to it and have barely put it down in the last few months. Furthermore, my Sondheim CD collection increased in size from an unflattering zero to five (and it's still growing)! This is an amazing introduction to the works of Stephen Sondheim, who is now my favorite modern musical composer). Buy this now if you don't already have it!
Beautiful, moving concert.......2003-04-13
This is a wonderful CD set with a great selection of songs. I do want to express a slight reservation, however. Barbara Cook has been one of my favorite singers for a number of years and the way her voice defies time is extraordinary -- for her to be singing with such bright, beautiful tone in her mid-70s with no wobble or beat in the voice is an amazing achievment.
I do have to say that by 2001, when this concert was recorded, Cook seemed to have a lost a little bit of power and intensity in her singing. This is only natural for someone of her age. Her voice is still lovely, but you can sense her keeping it in reserve a bit. She's as expressive as ever, but compare the rendition of "I got lost in his arms" on this album to the one on her previous album recorded in 1999, "The Champion Season", and there's less urgency and vocal depth in her singing here. That said, the high B at the end of "Ice Cream" is sensational.
So, despite that caveat, this is, again, a wonderful album, a must for Cook fans, especially for the gorgeous renditions of songs I'd never thought I'd get to hear her perform: "Not a Day Goes By", "Happiness/Loving You", "San Francisco", etc. Buy it!
... and I love Barbara Cook.......2003-02-11
This recording is a disappointment for me. It is not her best work, and Malcolm Gets is uninspired. My biggest complaint however is the engineering of the recording. Throughout the speaking was to soft, the singing volumes uneven, and the applause deafening. I will be passing this CD on to friends, and will later donate it to my local library.

Another fine addition to the series.......2001-02-13
After a bit of a slip with the second, this series was back on track with this third CD of songs cut from well-known musicals. As I mentioned in a previous review, just about any successful musical has had songs cut from it, not always because the song wasn't good, but because it no longer fit the show as updated, or a character or scene was cut (the booklet explains why each song was removed from its show). Once again, the songs are all good and the performances are wonderful. My favorites are "Mama's Talking Soft" (cut from Gypsy), "Big Fat Heart" (Seesaw), "Your Own College Band" (Where's Charley?), "When I Go Out Walkin' with my Baby" (Oklahoma!), and "Pick Up the Pieces" (also Seesaw). Bruce Kimmel was smart in using show singers instead of pop singers. I recommend the entire series. This CD features some fine songs that deserve renewed appreciation.
