The Full Monty: The Broadway Musical [Cast Recording]

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
We braced ourselves when we heard that a musical version of the popular movie The Full Monty was in the works--recent movie adaptations have not exactly set new quality standards for Broadway. While Terrence McNally did a fine job with the book (transferring the action from industrial England to Buffalo), special kudos should go to newcomer David Yazbek, who wrote a versatile and gloriously fun score. A million miles away from the higher brows of a Michael John LaChiusa or an Adam Guettel, Yazbek's sensibility is unabashedly pop. His songs serve narrative purposes but are also the kind of tunes you can sing in the shower. And the cast gleefully sinks its teeth into Yazbek's rock/pop/funk score: Emily Skinner is hilarious on "Life with Harold, and André de Shields positively steals the show with "Big Black Man." Finally, a new show where you're not ashamed to enjoy yourself. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Best New Musical in Years.......2006-06-12

Took a special mother/daughter trip to Chicago last summer which included viewing The Full Monty. My daughter and I are veteran musical theater lovers. Both of us agreed this was the snappiest, most amusing and touching musical we'd seen in a long time. Every song was catchy, singable, funny, moved the plot along and touched the heart. I had to have the soundtrack.

Of course, listening only makes me want to see the show once more. Next time it comes near our area, you can bet I'll be there to celebrate this wonderful piece of American theater again.

5 out of 5 stars Innovative and Entertaining.......2006-03-09

A departure from standard fare, "The Full Monty" is creative and entertaining. While the "exposure" got a lot of attention, the music is great and the story is touching.

5 out of 5 stars The Full Monty...Let's it Go!!!!!!.......2006-02-11

When I heard about a musical being made from the movie "The Full Monty" I though that broadway was going down the drain and I didn't give the show any thought after that.

Then this year a wonderful little show called "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" Came out and I fell in live with it and David Yazbek, so I came onto Amazon and looked him up to see if he had done any other shows and lo and behold there was" The Full Monty" so I decided to give it a try.

While this show isn't as polished or as safisticated as DRS it shows that even years ago David Knew what he was doing. the show is wonderful and the songs are truly the potatoes to this show's meat (Pun intended)

Standout Songs include:
Scrap
Man
Big-Ass Rock
Life With Harold
Big Black Man
You Rule my World
Michael Jordan's Ball
Jeanette's Showbiz Number
Breeze off the River
The Goods
You Walk with Me
Let It Go

If you liked Dirty Rotten Scoundrels you will also like The Full Monty.

4 out of 5 stars Not at all what you expect!.......2005-08-16

The Full Monty was the second show I saw on Broadway. Right after Phantom and right before Les Mis...nice mix, huh?
But anyhow, the show was fun, but I wasn't incredibly impressed, and I'll be honest, I went to see the stripping. 80% of it's patrons do, let's be truthful.
I got this soundtrack from a friend, and I've fallen in love with it. Women think this show is a big sex-fest full of naked men, but it's not. This show is about MANHOOD. Every man in this show is condemned by at least one woman for something that ends up him just being insecure. Dave is fat, and his wife thinks he's just not interested in sex anymore, but he doesn't feel like a man. Jerri doesn't feel like a man cuz he cant pay child support for his kid, and Harolds wife hits him up for money every chance she gets and he doesnt have the heart to tell her hes broke! This show is a great testement to how men have feelings too, and they're not always scumbags....sometimes things are different than they seem...and the women are the sex crazed maniacs forcing their men into uncomfortable positions. It happens. This show is an amazing revelation for men and women alike.

My favorite song was always You Rule My World...Go see this show, the soundtrack's no good til you see it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Show / Songs.......2005-06-11

This show is terrific, but it's the music that truly makes things truly memorable. Yazbek's score is modern & fun, while maintaining a theatrical feel. The cast sounds great, especially Patrick Wilson & John Ellison Conlee.

Best tracks include:

Scrap
Man
Big-Ass Rock [hysterical lyrics ... great song!]
You Rule My World
Breeze Off The River [beautiful song about a father's love for his son]
You Walk With Me
Let It Go [the big striptease number]

I have played this cd many, many times & looked forward to Yazbek's next attempt ... and along came "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels", which is even better!

2 out of 5 stars redux.......2007-07-06

Four of the songs on this CD (Oklahoma, Music of the Night, Cabaret, and All That Jazz) were on the earlier Ultimate Broadway. Of all the shows that have been on Broadway over the past 70+ years, including the ones that are currently running, there is no excuse for repeats!

3 out of 5 stars Moderate Quality.......2003-06-20

I believe that the show selection for this CD was excellent. However the song selection and song order were not. Why pick "Your Daddy's Son" from Ragtime when you can have the amazing and fantastic "Prologue" from the same show. Also I believe that a mistake was made by slecting "I Don Quixote" from Man of La Mancha instead of the much more listenable "Impossible Dream." Also the overture from Gypsy is not the proper song to start out a CD. Perhaps the "Overture" from The Phantom of the Opera.

This is however an excellent example of showtunes for inexperienced members of the theatrical world.

2 out of 5 stars POOR EXCUSE FOR SOME GOOD THEATER MUSIC.......2003-05-20

The best of Broadway? Sure, if you consider the best of Broadway only those songs taken only from RCA Victor cast recordings. Expect the expected: Tracks from "Ragtime," "Chicago," "42nd Street" and "Man of La Mancha," sung by the likes of Audra
McDonald, Bebe Neuwirth, Jerry Orbach and Brian Stokes Mitchell. Including a live recording of Barbara Cook warbling "Losing My Mind" from her "Mostly Sondheim" CD isn't exactly kosher. But then again, neither is this gimmick-riddled release. Curtain up?
Half-way, maybe. Light the lights? Dim them, please.
