Two Gentlemen of Verona (1971 Original Broadway Cast) [Soundtrack]

Editorial Reviews

It's hard to get more embedded in the early 1970s than an encounter with Two Gentlemen of Verona. The show embodies a long-gone chunk of New York theater history, when a musical's racially integrated cast was taken for granted; when a producer like the Public Theater's Joseph Papp thought it his duty to bring the classics to the masses; when composer Galt MacDermot (best known for Hair) and lyricist John Guare made Shakespeare pop, in all the meanings of the word, without dumbing it down. So yes, Two Gentlemen of Verona is of its time--and it was a fabulous time. Led by Raul Julia, the cast breathes uncommon energy into MacDermot's score. All right, so it's not Hair, but this show still has a lot more kick and melodies than most of what's currently on Broadway. Just check "What Does a Lover Pack" and "To Whom It May Concern Me," or the way "Follow the Rainbow" segues into "Where's North" and its rocking brass arrangements: fabulous! This recording had been out of print for too long, and it's great to have it available again. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

1 out of 5 stars This stinker beat "Follies" for Best Musical of the Year!.......2007-03-27

Need I say anymore. The score is dated and flat as was this show when I first saw it in the early '70's. And the fact that this show went on to capture that year's Tony Award over Sondheim's wonderful "Follies" is still one of the biggest mistakes in Broadway history. I just wonder why they ever bothered to release this on CD. The two record set originally produced was enough to gall while the Sondheim show got the abbreviated one record short shaft. Let these "Two Gentlemen" die in peace.

5 out of 5 stars Ahh that 70's sound!.......2007-03-17

Great score and comedy put to music. Come see it at Paramus Catholic ,NJ.
during the month of May, 2007.

2 out of 5 stars How Did This Win Best Musical of 1972?.......2006-08-08

Based on Shakespeare's play, "Two Gentlemen of Verona" won the 1972 Tony for Best Musical over the more deserving "Follies" and crowd-pleaser "Grease".

Best known for "Hair", Galt MacDermot's score does not contain any real musical "standards", but is highlighted by "What Does A Lover Pack", "To Who It May Concern Me", and the excellent, brass heavy "Where's North". Raul Julia ("Nine") and Clifton Davis are fine as the male leads. The voices of the female leads, however, leave something to be desired.

Possibly more "brilliant" during the time of its Broadway run ... this score just doesn't seem all that interesting in 2006.

3 out of 5 stars One Big Reason to Buy This.......2006-05-26

This is a nostalgic favorite because my high school did a bfd production of it and man, was it fun. The score has some marvelous energy and a lot of silliness/camp. I bought this 20 years later and found that I pretty much still knew the whole thing by heart.

OK. The vocals. The actresses playing Julia and Sylvia are awful, awful singers. Really bad. Which is a shame because most of Julia's songs are dynamite. Clifton Davis has a great voice and some fine opportunities to show it off. Full, warm, vibrant.

Raul Julia. What a marvelous voice. The Perfect Broadway Voice. Huge, delicious, expressive, alive, sensual, with that undiluted accent. His charm is palpable here. Even the sillliest songs are full of wit and charm. I get the feeling he may have been the show stealer here.

I bought it for some of the funky, brass-heavy arrangements and the heavy nostalgia element. I'd buy it again for Raul Julia's numbers.

5 out of 5 stars BEST STAGE MUSICAL EVER WRITTEN. PERIOD........2006-03-26

I am starting to believe that the Amazon.com reviewers feel they have to give a negative slant to their subject -- regardless of its merit -- in order to fulfill some false belief that the function of a reviewer is to be critical. I completely disagee with this reviewer. If a person familiar with neither story listened to both albums, he would emerge knowing the plot of "Two Gentlemen" and knowing nothing about what happens to whom in "Hair". "Hair" is written in mostly minor keys and is actually a very dark, bleak, and nihilistic plot with a tragic ending. "Two Gentlemen" layers complicated musical and vocal patterns in glorious, soaring harmonies while moving the story forward to give the Sixties Message lacking in the supposedly quintessential 60's Musical "Hair": "All You Need Is Love". THe fact that these two contrasting scores were written by the same person, the brilliant Galt Mc Dermott sums up the continuing question about the 60's: "Were they a good thing or a bad thing?" I only know of one way to judge a musical: If I listen to it from beginning to end and walk away from it sad that it's over, but with a huge smile on my face it did what it's supposed to do. If I've been listening to the Album for 30 years with the same smile, then that's above and beyond the call of duty. That's "2 Gentlemen". And..Raul (Proteus) , we miss you down here! You were pure charm. :)

5 out of 5 stars One of my Favorite CDs.......2004-02-19

In this wonderful collection of Shakespeare settings, Mr. Rolfe-Johnson creates a magical atmosphere using his unbelievable musicality and gorgeous, gorgeous voice! The songs themselves range from the sweet and charming "No more Dams!" to the heavenly interpretation of "She Never Told Her Love", but for me the high point of the whole CD is his incredible performance of the early version of Vaughan Willams' "Orpheus with his Lute"...this song alone is worth the price of the album! Mr. Rolfe Johnson is truly one of the worlds most exquisite tenors! A must have for every fan of English Song!

5 out of 5 stars Melodious Shakespeare.......2001-01-24

This CD consists of a collection of settings of Shakespearian lines by composers ranging from the 18th to the mid-20th centuries. It is an ideal vehicle for finding a new way to enjoy these writings of Shakespeare and also experience the work of a number of British composers, some well-known and some not so well-known
