Finian's Rainbow (1947 Original Broadway Cast) [Cast Recording] [Cast Recording] [Extra tracks]

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
While Finian's Rainbow's plot of racial injustice and heroic tobacco sharecroppers may be dated (never more so than as presented in Francis Ford Coppola's bloated 1968 film), Burton Lane and Yip Harburg's score is still a pot of gold. Finian McLonergan (Albert Sharpe) is an elderly Irishman who has traveled to America in hopes of planting some pilfered gold near Fort Knox and watching it grow. As his daughter, Ella Logan (who was actually Scottish) earns her top billing with charming renditions of "How Are Things in Glocca Morra?" and "Look to the Rainbow." Playing Og the leprechaun is Tony winner David Wayne, who has fun with the lyrics of "When I'm Not Near the Girl I Love," and Donald Richards as the leader of the sharecroppers croons "Old Devil Moon" and other tunes.

This 2000 reissue of the 1947 original Broadway cast restores a missing passage of "Look to the Rainbow," replaces "The Begat" with a superior take, and adds a previously unreleased version of "That Great Come-and-Get-It Day." In three bonus tracks, Harburg sings and presents "How Are Things in Glocca Morra?" and "When I'm Not Near the Girl I Love" for a live audience, and Harburg sings a song cut from the production, "Don't Pass Me By," with Lane at the piano. The booklet includes the original LP's front and back covers, photos, a detailed synopsis, new production notes, and comments on the reissue. It's also midprice. Other than a lack of printed lyrics, this is everything a reissue should be. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Finally on CD.......2007-02-26

In 2004, Rhino Handmade released the long out-of-print soundtrack "Finian's Rainbow" on CD. But because it was a limited edition, it was only available for a short term and sold at a high price.

Collector's Choice has wisely released the soundtrack at a lower price, and with fine remastering, fans of the underrated musical can finally own the soundtrack without paying too much money.

"Finian's Rainbow", directed by Francis Ford Coppola, was released in 1968, a period when the era of musicals was pretty much over. The film was not a big hit, but it's actually a beautiful film despite some creaky plot points and some outdated ideas.

What makes the film so special is the music and the performers who sing it. Fred Astaire and Petula Clark make an ideal father and daughter. Astaire is as charming as ever, and Clark truly comes into her own as a singer and actress. Although I love Clark's own recordings in English and French, this film is what made me a true fan. She glows on "Look to the Rainbow" and her duet with Don Francks on "Old Devil Moon" is both romantic and sensual, not the typical sentimental duet you see in musicals.

It's been a long time since this soundtrack has been readily available. I highly recommend this soundtrack if you are a fan of the film, and especially if you are a big Petula Clark fan.

5 out of 5 stars The very first.......2007-01-09

Everyone has a very first record (or CD). For me it was a 78 rpm set of this very same FINIAN'S RAINBOW. Bought in a thrift shop perhaps 43 years ago, this album was a prized childhood possession. From repeated use, I knew all the songs and every word within it's covers, including such minute details as manufacturing processes. (Example: The 78s were supposed to have a particularly quiet background because a layer of brown paper sandwiched amidst the shellac of the discs helped cut down on surface noise, even as it made them less brittle. Now I can't swear that's true, but for sure FINIAN'S RAINBOW was a pleasure to listen to.)

"Finian's" trivia: This play was the first-ever winner of the "Best Musical" Tony Award. E. Y. Harburg's nickname was not "Yip," it was "Yit," a fact intentionally obscured over his career. Besides brilliant lyrics, he also created wonderful poetry. Harburg was an anti-war activist during the Vietnam War era. Ella Logan was indeed from Scotland. She never did try to disguise her brogue while playing an Irish lass on Broadway. David Wayne's post-Finian career was quite extensive. He appeared on live TV dramas in the late 40s, and acted in an amazing number of films and television shows over the next 40 years.

As for the 1947 cast album of FINIAN'S RAINBOW-- my opinion is naturally extremely favorable. Harburg's lyrics are some of the best Broadway has ever seen, and Burton Lane's music complements them perfectly. Best advice is: listen to the samples provided, and if at all intrigued, do buy this CD. If you're a fan of great Broadway shows, you need look no further for that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

CD DETAILS--
The eight-page finely illustrated booklet is only slightly marred on page 2 by a nearly unreadable repro of the 1962 LP cover. "Look To The Rainbow" includes extra orchestration. The version here of "That Great Come-And-Get-It-Day" is how the song actually sounded on stage. "The Begat" is the first (and best) waxing-- this one wasn't used for decades due to a technical glitch, since repaired. Sound quality of all is superb. The bonus tracks of Yit Harburg discussing and playing three RAINBOW songs are interesting, especially the last, "Don't Pass Me By," which was cut from the show.

TOTAL RUNNING TIME -- 52:50

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful 78 set of Finian's Rainbow.......2004-05-21

I just acquired the original issue of this recording on six ten inch Columbia 78's.

I am listening to the set as I write.

All I can say is "Wow"!

Now, mind you, I have thousands of 78's in my collection. I tend to be very forgiving about the foibles of 78's sound.

But.

The Finian's Rainbow 78's I just acquired sound much, much better than the LP transfers.
And almost as good as the 2000 CD reissue which was made from the virgin acetate discs.

This surprised me. Columbia 78's were often made from inferior 78 shellac/composition blanks. Especially on Columbias issued before the late thirties.

Anyway.

The 78's sound better than I expected. No surface noise, whatsoever. And the recorded ambiance is outstanding. Columbia must have done something special with this recording.

Correction to Todd Senzig's review on this page.

He contends that FINIAN'S RAINBOW was Columbia's first original cast album but this is incorrect. Their first was the 1946 revival of SHOW BOAT. In fact the original LP release number verifies this.

3 out of 5 stars I want the MOVIE SOUNDTRACK.......2004-02-01

I love the MOVIE SOUNDTRACK. I want the Movie Soundtrack. I need the Movie Soundtrack. When will someone put the Movie Soundtrack on CD???

4 out of 5 stars Ella Logan and the classic Lane-Harburg score.......2004-01-27

This lovely reissue of FINIAN'S RAINBOW is a real treat. The Burton Lane-E.Y. Harburg score includes classic numbers like "Look to the Rainbow", "How Are Things in Glocca Morra?", "Something Sort of Grandish" and "That Old Devil Moon".

It catapulted the beguiling Ella Logan to Broadway stardom, in the plum lead role of Sharon; and also featured a commanding performance by David Wayne as the leprechaun Og.

This new reissue of the peerless 1947 original cast album has been remastered from the original, almost-pristine acetate master discs, which had remained untouched since the recording was originally made. These acetate discs contained alternate 'takes' of the numbers as well as additional music cues and dialogue. Presented here for the first time is the complete "That Great Come-and-Get-It Day". There are also demos of 3 songs performed by E.Y. Harburg himself.

Highly-recommended. [SONY SK-89208]

The Irish Tenors' fourth album sees the trio of Anthony Kearns, Ronan Tynan, and Finbar Wright paying a sentimental musical tribute to Ellis Island, the hallowed landmark that met the majority of immigrants entering the United States at the beginning of the 20th century. Needless to say, the Tenors' repertoire this time around is full of reflective ballads of love, loss, and homesickness, including the original "Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears" that opens this disc. Throughout this studio recording, the Irish Tenors are in fine form and backed by a soft-hued orchestra that never interferes with their soaring vocals. Traditional tunes include "My Wild Irish Rose," "How Are Things in Glocca Mora," and, of course, "Danny Boy" (the last sung by all three tenors, with refreshingly simple solo piano accompaniment). Thankfully, the threesome didn't forget that the immigrants had fun, too, as evidenced by some lighthearted fare; "The Courtin' Medley" features the Tenors at their most upbeat and comical. Ellis Island is a moving aural portrait of the struggles and triumphs of the Irish émigrés and a must-have for fans of the threesome. Newcomers may enjoy the Tenors' debut disc even more, as the earlier live album is a slightly more upbeat and spirited affair. --Jason Verlinde

of Macushla and The Croppy Boy like an angel. And their Courtin' and Irish
Medleys, and their "Nation Once Again" trios are simply glorious glees.

With the benefit of a grand theme, this is perhaps the best, and best balanced, of all their programs.

5 out of 5 stars Ellis Island song brings tears to my eyes.......2006-03-17

This magical album crosses oceans and centuries and puts me in touch with my Irish ancestry. The title song tells a story similar to my greatgrandmother's and even though I've heard it many times now, I still weep for her.

5 out of 5 stars How Are Things In Glocca Morra?.......2004-04-16

Long a fan of Irish music, I have turned to a series of artists to satiate my appetite. Bing Crosby and John McCormick have been succeeded by the Irish Tenors.

This CD has a bit more of an Irish American theme as "Isle Of Hope, Isle Of Tears" and "God Bless America" illustrate. Interspersed among these tunes are traditional Irish tunes such as "Macushla" and "Croppy Boy", along with newer songs, such as "The Green Fields Of France" and "How are Things In Glocca Morra?"

The singing is excellent, the words understandable. I appreciate the inclusion the lyrics of the songs contained on the insert of the cover. These are songs you will want to learn, whose stories you will want to research. I have. Listen again and again!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Historical CD Ever!.......2003-11-21

I think this is best CD since Live in Belfast! it also has 2 songs not included on the video! it's a unique album of how the immigration to Ellis Island and New York turned out. It also has songs of the war such as The Green Fields Of France (The Best One) or, the croppy boy. I would recommend this to anyone!

5 out of 5 stars "top film scores of the 1960's ~ Percy Faith".......2004-02-18

If you are a collector of Percy Faith, you must run out to your local music store and pick this one up ~ "Plays The Academy Award Winner Born Free and Other Great Movie Themes" (originally released on Columbia Records CS 9450 in 1967) and "Windmills of Your Mind" (originally released on Columbia Records CS 9835 in 1969) ~ following the formula of previous Columbia Records releases featuring Faith's classic style of sweeping strings and haunting arrangements, they've come up with two more winners.

Master of arranging, Faith's formula is so natural in keeping the arrangements fresh and new with his distinctive style ~ his tasteful treatment always highlights the quality of the composition ~ ultimately making them a hit all over again. Remember the days when you could turn on the radio and hear Percy Faith with many familiar pop standards ~ when you put this compact disc on your player, get ready for the "Percy Faith Touch" sprinkled with pure magic over the orchestration and leaves you simply in that unforgettable mood.

Top performances inclusive for the twenty two tracks of film score themes ~ "A MAN AND A WOMAN" (Barouh/Lai), "A TIME FOR LOVE" (Webster/Mandel), "ALFIE"(David/Bacharach), "AS LONG AS HE NEEDS ME" (Lionel Bart), "BORN FREE"(John Barry), "CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG" (Richard M. Sherman/Robert B. Sherman), "ELVIRA'S THEME" (Percy Faith), "FOR LOVE OF IVY" (Russell/Quincy Jones), "THEME FROM "THE FOX" (Lalo Schlfrin), "FUNNY GIRL" (Merrill/Styne), "GEORGY GIRL"(Dale/Springfield), "THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER" (Peggy Lee/David Grusin), "HOW ARE THINGS IN GLOCCA MORRA?"(Harburg/Lane), "THE LION IN THE WINTER"(John Barry), "SONG FROM "THE OSCAR" (Evans/Livingston/Percy Faith), "THEME FROM "THE SAND PEPPLES" (Bricusse/Goldsmith), "SOMEWHERE MY LOVE(Lara's Theme from "Dr. Zhivago")"(Webster/Jarre), "STAR" (Cahn/Van Heusen), "THIS IS MY SONG" (Charles Chaplin), "THIS HOTEL" (Keating/Quine), "THE WINDMILLS OF YOUR MIND" and "THE WISHING DOLL" (David/Bernstein) ~ notice two of the selections were composed by the man himself Percy Faith! Impressive line up of top movie songs that will surely satisfy the appetite of all "film-score-buffs" and Percy Faith fans...gotta love it!

He contends that FINIAN'S RAINBOW was Columbia's first original cast album but this is incorrect. Their first was the 1946 revival of SHOW BOAT. In fact the original LP release number verifies this.

5 out of 5 stars Broadway's finest score, finest cast album.......2005-11-05

Of all the splendid scores that have echoed through New York theatres, the best of them all may be this gentle 1947 attack on prejudice and stupidity masquerading as fable and whimsy. Surely there are few love songs greater than "Old Devil Moon" and fewer comic songs as good as "When I'm Not Near the Girl I Love".
The genius of lyricist E. Y. Harburg (lyricist for MGM's classic "Wizard of Oz" song score) is on full and clearest display in this collection of brilliant songs. Composer Burton Lane once said that his music always sounded better with a Yip Harburg lyric.
Not only is there not a clunker in the mix but the songs are almost sublime at times. "Look to the Rainbow" is a direct follow-up to the "Wizard of Oz" song "Over the Rainbow".
This recording benefits from the stereo technology unavailable to the original cast. But, most important, this version has the energy and tempo that a busy company (that fully understands the material at hand) can bring to a recording.
The other "Finian's Rainbow" recordings are worth collecting but have problems. While the film soundtrack has great orchestrations, it is handicapped by less than fitting vocals. The 2004 Off-Broadway cast album has supurb vocals, mood and energy but the piano only orchestrations drain some of the lilt off the songs.
It is true that "Finian's Rainbow" is a product of its time but that "dated" quality can be seen as charming without hurting the project. Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Oklahoma!" was likely a direct structure influence and the underlying theme of the contemporary Broadway musical "Brigadoon" has been noted (although "Brigadoon" lacks the humor, satire and social conscience at the core of "Finian's Rainbow").
Note that Yip Harburg also supplied similar song material for the 1943 MGM version of the musical play "Cabin in the Sky" with the songs written especially for the film version (music by "Wizard of Oz" composer Harold Arlen). Film version "Cabin in the Sky" songs "Happiness is Just a Thing Called Joe", "Li'l Black Sheep", "Ain't it the Truth" (comic Lena Horne version and sizzing big band version by Louis Armstrong insanely unused on film) and "Life's Full of Consequences" could have all been interpolated into "Finian's Rainbow".
As the years pass, the message, the music and the wonder of "Finian's Rainbow" sweetens like fine wine.
This 1960 Revival Cast album is a brilliant Yip Harburg sermon set to music. Collect and savor.

4 out of 5 stars Revival superior to original cast recording.......2004-02-18

I have always preferred the performances on the 1960 revival album to the original cast recording. Although David Wayne won a Tony award for the creation of his Og, the Leprechaun, there is nothing vocally in his two songs to indicate anything special about the interpretation, while Howard Morris in the revival embellishes his vocal comedic acting with inventiveness and delight. Jeannie Carson is a superior vocalist to Ella Logan and Biff McGuire is less beefy than Donald Richards. The orchestrations are bright here and recorded in stereo, not the low fidelity of the 1947 original. In addition the non-dependence on 3.5 minute 78-rpm side limits allows the revival to give us extra material from the show - the LOOK TO THE RAINBOW dance, the reprise of SOMETHING SORT OF GRANDISH between Og and the children and the finale chorus of GLOCCA MORRA.

When one looks at the structure of the show it does strike one oddly that the four ballads come first in the show - after the opening choral number - with only one of the comic songs interspersed before the fourth ballad. Then come four of the five satirical songs all in a row, followed by the second comic song. It's unusual to have a show's songs bunched like this by type rather than blended for variety.

It's also an oddity that both an Irish and a Scottish fantasy should arrive on Broadway the same year (1947). While BRIGADOON has gone on to continued revivals and a healthy life, FINIAN'S RAINBOW due to its politically dated libretto, has faded from public view, rarely revived, and probably needing a program glossary for audiences to catch all the satire based on popular figures and movements of its day.

What does go on is the score. The four ballads have entered the standard repertoire and are the main reasons for purchasing either cast album. The cleverness of the lyrics in the satirical numbers can't match the sheer beauty and feeling in OLD DEVIL MOON, IF THIS ISN'T LOVE, GLOCCA MORRA and LOOK TO THE RAINBOW.

For my money the revival is a far superior purchase - consider all of the remastering involved in bringing the 1947 original back to the public, including use of three alternate takes - which hardly in my mind constitutes recreating the original cast recording as released to the public in 1947.

2 out of 5 stars I want the MOVIE SOUNDTRACK.......2004-02-01

I love the MOVIE SOUNDTRACK. I want the Movie Soundtrack. I need the Movie Soundtrack. When will someone put the Movie Soundtrack on CD???

5 out of 5 stars Excellent STEREO recording of Lane - Harburg triumph.......2003-02-20

This 1960 revival recording is an excellent addition to the Finian's Rainbow canon. This revival is fabulously cast and the performances are stellar, so I will not comment on them further. This recording takes advantage of the then new 2-channel stereo process in recorded music. And the LP format allowed for more music to be included than on the original cast album, for which songs had to be truncated and/or sped up to fit the limited playing time of 78 RPM sides.

While the 1947 original will always remain the definitive recorded version of the score, fans of the show will find this a welcomed addition as well. Performances are stellar, sound quality is perfect, what more can I say. And perhaps an even better recorded version is the 1968 Warner Bros. movie soundtrack, now out of print on LP, but available as a limited edition CD release from Rhino.

Whichever album you choose, FINIAN'S RAINBOW cannot disappoint.

4 out of 5 stars "Finian's Rainbow" might be dated, but its still pretty good.......2001-02-17

As strange as it might seem "Finian's Rainbow" is exactly what it seems like, the odd fusion of two different non-musical ideas. E. Y. "Yip" Harburg, the immortal lyricist for "The Wizard of Oz," had two non-musical ideas. The first was about a leprechaun who has three wishes while the second was about a bigoted white Senator who is turned black and becomes victimized by his own racial prejudice. "Finian's Rainbow" is the result of this odd collision of diverse ideas. With a book by Harburg and Fred Saidy and music by Burton Lane, whose lesser known musical works include "Hold On to Your Hats" with Al Jolson and "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever." This original cast album features the 1960 revival production directed and choreographed by Herbert Ross and stars Jeannie Carson as Sharon McLonergan, Bobby Howes as her father Finian, Biff McGuire as Woody Mahoney, Howard Morris as Og the leprechaun and Sorrell Booke as Senator Billboard Rawkins.

The setting for the show is Rainbow Valley in the state of Missitucky, where the farm of Woody Mahoney and his mute sister Susan is about to be auctioned off to the evil Senator Rawkins. Woody is short on the back taxes but the day is saved by Finian McLonergan and his daughter Sharon, who now become part owners of Rainbow Valley. Finian has stolen a crock o' gold from the leprechauns and wants to bury it near Fort Knox so it will grow. He also has plans for the three wishes that come with the crock. Woody and Sharon fall in love, but then Og the leprechaun shows up wanting his crock o' gold back. When the Senator learns there is gold in the Valley, he makes a blatant attempt to seize the land from the black sharecroppers. An outraged Sharon wishes the Senator would know what it was like to be black, and since she is standing over the buried crock o' gold, the wish comes true as everybody celebrates at the end of Act I. From there on it is just a question of working out all of the romantic entanglements and dealing with the Senator's pigmentational problem.

As social satire "Finian's Rainbow" was certainly dated by the time the Francis Ford Coppola film version was released in 1968. But even if it is not a timeless musical, it is certainly above average. The chief redeeming value are the songs: "Old Devil Moon" and "When I'm Not Near the Girl I Love" are first class Broadway standards. "How Are Things in Glocca Morra" and "Look to the Rainbow" are lovely songs sung by the leading lady (although my preference is always going to be for the Petula Clark versions from the film), while "When the Idle Poor Become the Idle Rich," "That Great Come-and-Get-It Day" and "The Begat" are solid ensemble pieces. You can always just forget the plot and enjoy the music and the lyrics. There might be peers (Sondheim, Porter, your favorite's name here) but there simply is not a better lyricist in the history of the Broadway theater than "Yip" Harburg.

4 out of 5 stars Intimate and tuneful.......2005-01-14

I'm an admirer of Previn as both classical and jazz musician, and in both categories he excels. This album has the same intimate, highly musical quality that you'll find in Keith Jarrett's The Melody at Night with You. What I appreciate about both is the fact that the pianist's invention always serves the music; it's never obtrusively artful or showy. Highly recommended. Do yourself a favor and get Jarrett's disc to go along with this.

5 out of 5 stars Underrated Previn.......2002-01-14

Andre Previn has always been an underrated jazz pianist. Because of his astonishing variety of successes as a classical conductor, pianist and composer; a film composer; a songwriter; and a performer of romantic cocktail music, he has been eyed suspiciously by the jazz community. In fact, his Tatum-like virtuosity, and his wildly unique and often playfully humorous piano style has made him one of the most interesting, innovative, and entertaining jazz pianists around. His many trio albums on Contemporary Records in the '50s (with Red Mitchell and Shelly Manne) still hold up as some of the best of their kind. But like Rodney Dangerfield, he never gets any respect. Thus, even his most kind critics are likely to throw darts at "Ballads" as too sweet and not swinging. Nonsense! It's not Monk, but it is nevertheless a beautiful set and a loving tribute to some of the greatest songwriters in Tin Pan Alley. Previn squeezes out every harmonic nuance of each song, yet he sounds like he's playing off the cuff in his living room late at night just to amuse himself. Previn may not swing like Teddy Wilson or Oscar Peterson on this offering, but I can't imagine any serious listener being left unmoved by his version of Burton Lane's "How Are Things In Glocca Morra?" It's simply gorgeous. Previn's amazing talents and his proficiency in many musical styles all come together in this unjustly overlooked CD. Give it a chance!

2 out of 5 stars What happened?.......2001-10-03

THe magic is gone. After reading the liner notes, I learned that someone at the studio asked Previn to make an album of just ballads. BIG MISTAKE. I think he was not in the mood.

By the time he'd turned his own Reprise Records label into a going concern in 1963, Frank Sinatra could happily stub out his cigarette on Tradition, then douse the ashes with the slurry of his double bourbon on the rocks. It's not that Sinatra didn't respect the Broadway musical; indeed, he'd done quite well by its ballads over the course of his storied career. But that haughty Tradition--well, she was just another dame who had to go. So Sinatra swiftly showed her the door. Teaming up with musical director Morris Stoloff, a Murderer's Row of the top arrangers in the business (Riddle, May, Martin, Paich, Fielding, Van Cleave, et al.), and a motley assortment of his Rat Pack buddies and label mates, Frank and company turned the core of post-war Broadway (Finian's Rainbow, Kiss Me, Kate, South Pacific, and Guys and Dolls) into the recorded equivalent of Culture Night at the Sands. And if the lively, swingin' results had contemporary Broadway critics spitting their hot toddies through their proper, powdered noses, so much the better.

There are moments here--Sinatra, Dean Martin, and honorary Rat Bing Crosby tearing up Guys and Dolls' "Fugue for Tinhorns"; Frank, Dino, and Sammy Davis Jr. turning "We Open in Venice" from Kiss Me, Kate into a virtual Vegas free-for-all--where you can almost hear the ice tinkling in their tumblers. And yet it works, even in its weirdest, most perverse moments. What kind of demented genius teams Debbie Reynolds with Allan Sherman (on Kate's "Sue Me") or has the foursquare McGuire Sisters harmonize the naughty "The Begat" from Finian's Rainbow? Happily, the same one who turned Dinah Shore and Rosemary Clooney loose on sublime versions of, respectively, South Pacific's "I'm Gonna Wash that Man Right Outta My Hair" and "How Are Things in Glocca Morra?" This is Frank Sinatra's take on Broadway--alive, kicking, and in your face, Jack; be advised not to wait for an apology. --Jerry McCulley

    5 out of 5 stars A perfect marriage.......2007-01-11

Wow! I was blown away by this album. I love both broadway showtunes and music from the 40's so this combination was unbelievable. I don't know who came up with the concept, but it's incredible. I've heard all of these musicals in their original version and have enjoyed them for a time. This album did a fresh take on all of those songs, reviving them once again for me. I accidently found this while doing a search for Jo Stafford CDs. Boy, am I glad I did!

1 out of 5 stars Stick to the originals.......2006-07-23

nice recordings but veer away from the broadway sound and into popular music of the 40's and 50's. Some tracks are awful. Bing Crosby singing (warbling) Younger Than Springtime? Please!! Anyone who's heard Jason Daniely in the recent Carnegie Hall concert version, will never be able to accept any other versions.

5 out of 5 stars Can You Argue with the HI-LOS?.......2002-05-30

Sinatra, wise beyond his years, hired the Hi-Los when he formed Reprise. This vocal group is perfect in range, technique, quality of musicianship, arrangements, wit, and has won every Jazz Poll hands down while they recorded and performed! Their use on these recordings is a delight.

I would also add that Johnny Prophet -- a name as true to life as Johnny Rocket -- is a revelation...Especially in the KISS ME, KATE section. The arrangement of WERE THINE THAT SPECIAL FACE is magnificent, penned by an arranger's arranger. (Note that well, Billy and Nelson!). Also, his SO IN LOVE is a gem.

Needless to say, Sinatra, Martin, Sammy and Crosby are amazing, as always.

This is an essential album for fans of Sinatra, and the great American songbook!
