Notre Dame de Paris (2000 Studio Cast) [Epic] [Cast Recording]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
With the British in a bit of a dry spell in the late 1990s, it's fallen to the French to produce Europe's pop-rock blockbuster musicals. Following in the footsteps of the Boublil-Schönberg spectacles is Notre-Dame de Paris, which opened in its title city in September 1998, toured through France, Belgium, Switzerland, and Canada, and produced two top-selling albums. This take on Victor Hugo's classic novel features music by Richard Cocciante and lyrics by Luc Plamondon (Starmania), translated into English by Will Jennings ("My Heart Will Go On," "Up Where We Belong"), and tells a tragic tale of love and lust among Quasimodo (the raspy-voiced but effective Garou), the gypsy woman Esmeralda (Australian pop singer Tina Arena, whose timbre might remind you of Lea Salonga), the priest Frollo (Canadian Daniel Lavoie), the dashing captain Phoebus (Steve Balsamo), and his fiancée Fleur-de-Lys (Natasha St-Pierre). This talented cast (different from the one that opened in Las Vegas in January 2000) will premiere in London in May 2000 and includes numerous members from the Paris companies. Making a brief appearance is frequent Plamondon collaborator Celine Dion, whose performance of the opening track was included on her greatest hits album. This disc compiles 63 minutes of the show's appealing tunes, most notably "Live for the One I Love," "The Age of the Cathedrals," "Belle (Is the Only Word)," and "My Heart if You Will Swear"--pop-rock with a slight Gallic accent and a nod to such genre landmarks as Jesus Christ Superstar and Chess. Also included are lyrics, a brief synopsis, and color photos. Incidentally, Notre-Dame de Paris might someday find itself in competition with another developing project: Disney's latest screen-to-stage translation, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, a less gritty version of the same story line. --David Horiuchi

Spectacular.......2006-07-13
This music is simply breathtaking. Just especially beautiful. I have both this version, the two-CD complete version, and the English. The two-CD set (I think 52 tracks) is the best. This is second best. The music in this abridged CD is not presented in chronological order, however, and sometimes, due to this and the missing tracks, there is something lacking. However, it's just gorgeous music.
The acoustics are amazing. I'm not sure if this is really noticeable unless you hear it immediately before or after the English version. The cast is absolutely amazing. There is so much emotion in their voices.
I'm surprised there is so little about Richard Cocciante, the composer. This music is some of the best I've heard. I would have thought there was an abundance of music written by Richard Cocciante that I haven't heard. From what I can find out online, there isn't. This is just a masterpiece.
There are many reviewers who mention the translation issue. If you think of this as a popular musical, I can see that the translation may be an issue. However, think of it as an opera-- which it also is (not in the classical sense). We don't concern ourselves with the translation of La Traviata, La Boheme. Same with this. . . just enjoy the music.
If you can possibly find the 2 CD complete set (sometimes available for download elsewhere, find it before purchasing this. But, if you can't find it, get this. Also, as a side note. . . the DVD has the entire libretto included and offers English subtitles.
i would give this musical more stars if i could.......2006-05-07
i am so in love with this musical. it was the first french musical i'd ever seen. my french teacher showed it to the whole class after we had translated every single song into english. the hard work definitely paid off. the musical was amazing. i immediately fell in love and became obsessed. i couldn't stop listening to the CD. i love garou and bruno pelletier. they're both very talented, along with everyone else in the musical.
i really want to buy the two-disc CD, but i can't find it. does anyone know where i can buy it?
I would. . ........2006-01-26
. . . highly recommend this album. the songs are beautiful and the singers seem to carry over the emotions that the characters feel to the listener. AWESOME!
A journey with Esmeralda.......2006-01-19
When I first saw the perfomance of Notre Dame de Paris by original francophone troupe of singers for the first time, right away I fell in love with the music of Riccardo Cocciante and the gorgeous voices of the singers.
Being lucky to be able to understand the lyrics, I was pleasantly surprised by the awesome lyrics of Luc Plamondon, even if the lyrics are not necessary to understand the mood and the emotions that the songs transmit, knowing the words helps you to completely immerse into the play and feel the same emotions that the play characters, to live the story yourself.
With "Bohemienne" we see a clear picture of a young gypsy girl wandering in the mountains and valleys of Andalusia, playful and free, a little sad because she lives only for the present, every tomorrow is a new mystery, a new journey.
"Belle" depicts a stunning young woman, with sensual moves and penetrating eyes, dancing on the square while all the men are ready to do anything to be with her.
"Tu va me detruire" demonstrates the unconrolled desire of the priest towards Esmeralda, the man who dedicated all his life to sience and religion who now is ready to surpass all his beliefs, descend to hell only if she would be his. While he is discovering his dark side, Esmeralda falls in love with a beau captaine, Phoebus, who is betraying his fiancée with her.
Meanwhile his fiancée Fleur de Lys is reflecting on how to get her loved one back : in "La monture" she makes plan of vegeance to Esmeralda, she is calling her a witch, the hatred and jelousy are overtaking her while she says to Phoebus "I will come back to you only if Esmeralda will be executed ".
As the story ends the spectator/listener is taken over by
the desperation of innocent and proud Esmeralda before being executed, the depth and the eternity of Quasimodo's feelings.
I really love all the singers and ever since I have Notre Dame de Paris I don't miss an album by any of the singers from the musical. I have discovered for myself such great artists as Garou, Bruno Pelletier, Patrick Fiori.
It's a must for everyone!
Notre Dame de Paris.......2005-09-25
Excellent CD if you want to listen to opera in short. However, if you are really interested, it's better to buy a 2-disc edition or a DVD to enjoy this wonderful music in full.

Too many love songs on this CD.......2006-08-20
If I want love songs, I can listen to top 40.
For musical theatre, I prefer drama, though Broadway almost inevitably throws some romance in.
This CD is dominated by love songs.
Furthermore, this CD seems like a compilation of songs, rather than the entire story, so they do seem like just love songs absent strong characterisation.
Please buy the French version.......2006-07-13
When we listen to opera, we don't really worry ourselves with the translation (although it is nice to have). So it should be here. It's really too bad this musical/modern opera just couldn't be presented here in the original French. I'm afraid this may come off as elitist, but hey, the original is SO SO SO much better than this!
Tina Arena (Esmeralda) may have a fantastic voice. Unfortunately, you won't be left with this impression when listening to this CD. There's a harsh edge to her performance that is almost unpleasant. Her phrasing is poor. To add insult to injury, the acoustics are not spectacular, and the whole performance just absolutely does NOT come alive at all. The French recording is immeasurably better than this. When you listen to the French recording, you are just drawn into the whole story. And, if you know the story (do a little reading about the musical-- it's not necessary to read the Victor Hugo novel) you will have an idea what's happening while they're singing. (If you pick up the DVD you'll get the entire libretto (in French) and English subtitles.)
Anyways, this is just flat-out not so good. I don't mind the actual lyric translation. . . I haven't listened carefully enough to find offense with the actual choice of words the translator chose. It's really the music, the performances, and the acoustics. Noa-- who is Esmeralda in the French version-- has an incredible voice. All of the cast is fantastic. The English version is just NOT GOOD.
One more thing: It is difficult to find the unabridged 2 CD complete performance in French. It is available to download at some sites. If you can find that, rather than the one-CD abridged French that is available here, try to do that. There is something amazing about listening to the entire thing in chronological order. It's just one of the most beautiful pieces of music that I've heard.
Addendum: I've listened to this a few more times. I DO think that Garou, Daniel Lavoie, and Bruno Pelletier are STILL incredible on this version. They bring their same beautiful voices to the English roles of Quasimodo, Frollo, and Gringoire. However, Tina Arena's Esmeralda is really enough to ruin the entire score. Her voice is absolutely unpleasant as Esmeralda. There is no sweetness to it. Both Noa and Helene Segara are so much better. And, Steven Balsamo as Phoebus is only okay. Patrick Fiori has a rich lush tenor when he sings Phoebus' part in the French version. Steven Balsamo-- who'll you'll hear here-- is only half as good.
Lastly, after seeing the translation of the French on the DVD version, I have to say that I don't really mind the English word translation on this English version. My husband would actually laugh a bit when reading the English translation when we were watching the show. Here, the words and melodrama are toned down a bit. Not a lot, mind you-- it is a tragedy, but a little. If you have seen the English subtitle translation on the dvd (think the song Belle, specifically), and then listen to the translation here, it's really not as bad as you might think when reading these reviews.
An appalling translation sinks great musical.......2006-04-17
This mangled version of the wonderful French original demonstrates the importance of lyrics to the success of a rock opera. A production like this one, with avant-garde, minimalist sets and costumes, stands or falls on the quality of the music, lyrics and performers. While the French version was nearly flawless (brought down somewhat by the less-than-stellar performance of Helene Segara, who in any case does not sing on the cast recording), the English falls short of the mark. Sadly, even the excellent cast can't save the boring, unsubtle, and often ungrammatical lines that replace the powerful original lyrics. Rhymes of the "hell/tell/sell" sort abound, and the translator's preference for rhyme over meaning often results in completely unwarranted character changes (such as Phoebus being uncharacteristically concerned with damnation during "Belle", apparently because the word "hell" rhymes with "well"...) The translation manages two seemingly self-contradictory errors: it is both excessively literal, and insufficiently precise. The latter is a real problem, as others have noted, not only because the vagueness of meaning dilutes the power of the lyrics, but also because it makes the show sound repetitive.
Esmeralda on this recording is sung by Tina Arena; another mistake. She is a talented singer with a powerful voice, but her style and timbre do not match Garou's, nor does she have sufficient vocal expressivity to pull off this role. The music is not especially difficult in a technical sense, and relies more on the artist's ability to express emotion. Tina Arena certainly hits the notes with all she's got, but her Esmeralda lacks the charisma and tragedy intended for this character.
There is one good reason to buy this CD: it does have a slightly different song selection than the French cast recording. In particular, "The Birds They Put In Cages" is a lovely piece of music and, even in this imperfect rendition, is worth hearing. However, unless you absolutely must have this music in English, you would probably do better to get the complete Original Cast Live version of the French production.
Phantastic warm spirit-driven epic.......2006-03-03
Me, evangeilst for the youth, this imagination got from these songs of 'Notre-dame De Paris' would be very helpful to drive them to love the pitiable.
So, if possible, I want to procure the manuscipts(sheets of music) of these songs.
Could you please duide me for my above need?
Not as good as the French, but that would just be impossible!.......2005-11-29
It's true, the English lyrics are a far cry from the original French, but in all fairness to Will Jennings, this must've been a difficult son-of-a-b to translate. With such a poetic and brilliantly written original, how do you keep the essence of the story, make it sound good AND make it all rhyme at the same time? Often, the perfect words simply aren't there in English. Most of the stuff is too poetic and simply doesn't translate. As a result, it's true, some of the lyrics are HORRIBLY awkward, like in "Bohemienne"...
French: "Je suis fille de grands chemins"
English: "I was born on a road that bends"!!!!
Anyway, I saw the original for the first time the year it came out, and have seen it three times since then (and it just came back to Paris for a limited time!). As soon as I found out there was an English version, I couldn't wait to check it out. I was not disappointed. For the most part, it's pretty well done. Just don't listen to the French first. And like some already pointed out, even if you don't understand the French, it'll still sound a lot better.

And what about the Italian version? It's good, maybe even great, but nothing compares to the original version, I have Notre Dame in all languages that it has been released in, and so long I stay with the fisrt one!! In the Italian version my favorite songs are : La Cavalcatura, Il prete innamorato, Mi distruggerai, Vivere per amare, Bella, Zingara and Luna. These ones are sung passionately and are very beautiful. I recommend this version if you already have the french one.
Nothing like the orignal version, but close..........2003-01-14
..the title says it all. actually, the very first version with Noah as Esmeralda was the best they ever made. It's really too bad she didnt want to be part of all the business that was made around this show, because she really has a great voice. but i guess she had her reasons...
Italian Version of this Musical Phenomenon!.......2002-09-25
Not the best, but a fine recording of the Musical Phenomenon NOTRE DAME DE PARIS.
The Cast consists of
Lola Ponce as ESMERALDA,
Gio Di Tonno as QUASIMODO,
Vittorio Matteucci as FROLLO,
Matteo Setti as GRINGOIRE,
Marco Guerzoni as CLOPIN,
Graziano Galatone as PHEOBUS,
and Claudia Galatone as FLOR DE LIS.
Track list is:
1)Age of the Cathedrals
2)The Refugees
3)Bohemienne
4)Belle
5)Your Love Will Kill Me
6)Court of Miracles (With new lyrics, Esmeralda sings more & Gringoire sings too!)
7)Ave Maria
8)Florence
9)The Bells (With short duet by Gringoire and Frollo!)
10)I'm A Priest
11)Torn Apart
12)My Heart If You Will Swear
13)God You Made The World All Wrong
14)Live (Sung beautifully by Lola Ponce!)
15)Moon
16)Dance My Esmeralda
All sung in Italian
It was fun to get this cd and compare the singing styles from the other cds out there. Sad there was no "Birds In Cages" though. But like I said, this isn't the best Notre Dame cd, that would be the Live double disc French version of the of the entire show. This is only a hilights cd. Esmeralda is very strong. A much better singer than Original Helene Segara, in my opinion. Others are good as well. Comes with lyric book in Italian and pictures of the actors.
Great to listen to.
Notre Dame...A Classic & Contemporary Drama.......2002-05-21
I happened upon this work through a 20-second bite on one of the cable television channels one evening. It caught my eyes and ears, as I've been really excited by the various musical themes and performances of Quebec's Cirque du Soleil for now close to ten years. It took me awhile to track it down, as there were no leads to its origin within the body of this news report, but I finally found it here on Amazon.com.
This work based on Victor Hugo's story of the Hunchback of Notre Dame, as we might know it in the United States, has been produced as a truly modern opera with great drama and exacting performance in a serious work of music. I found the music to be very exciting with its combination of contemporary vocals, orchestral sound, and storyline.
The efforts of Luc Plamondon in writing the lyrics and Richard Cocciante in creating and scoring the music are tremendous. The empassioned performances by its artistes, Helene Segara, Daniel Lavoie, Bruno Pelletier, Garou, Patrick Fiori, Luck Mervil, and Julie Zenatti are spectacular. I would love to see this in DVD format as it would add greatly to all of our experiences of the production.

Excellent Performances of a 'different kind of old music'.......2005-12-13
'Visions from the Book' performed by the 'Ensemble for Medieval Music', otherwise known as SEQUENTIA gives us a genre of old music which is neither purely liturgical (part of a mass) or minstral or part of a masque (dance).
It is singing, with some instrumental accompanyment, of stories from the Bible, written mostly by anonymous authors, probably monestary choir directors.
One name stands out among the unknown composers. This is Peter Abaelard (1079 - 1142), famous as one of the two principals in the story of Heloise and Abelard. He gives us a lament of David over the death of Saul and Jonathan from the old testament.
In fact, four of the seven tracks are recitations from the old testament.
Up until now, I have not paid enough attention to SEQUENTIA's body of work and they have laid fallow in my collection. This recording reminds me of how good they are, in comparison to the other famous names of old music performing such as the Hilliard Ensemble and the Anonymous 4.
Highly recommended.

Not up to an earlier standard but still very good.......2000-06-20
Back in 1994, Marco Polo label released a real gem, almost every note of the Georges Auric score to "La Belle et la Bete" (8. 223765) possibly the finest score to any film--ever. In 1998 they followed up with suites of his music for "Orphee," "Ruy Blas" and "Thomas l'imposteur" (8.225066). Wonderful scores but they pale somewhat compared with the first recording. And that is my only negative concerning the 3rd volume in this series,
Actually there are two suites from the film based on the Notre-Dame tale: one for full orchestra and one for two harps, two guitars and cello. This is, by the way, the awful version with Anthony Quinn and Gina Lollobrigida. So as I always have to say about film score recordings, the music stands or falls on its own merits. And if one listens as if one is hearing a series of very short tone poems, then this CD, as does Vol. 2, succeeds very nicely indeed. As always with Marco Polo, the liner notes are quite helpful. But please go for the "Belle et Bete" offering first.

Customer Reviews:
"Notre Dame de Paris" is exhilarating!.......2001-04-07
My class is studying The Hunckback of Notre Dame, and have been viewing films protraying Victor Hugo's novel. The last one we saw was the French musical production of Notre Dame de Paris. It was so beautiful, I just had to buy the CD. Some may disagree with me, but I find this album to be much better sung in French than English. The actors are wonderful, the singers are wonderful, and the music is breathtaking. An exciting and beautiful musical production.
