Violet (1998 Original Off-Broadway Cast) [Cast Recording]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
While Broadway as a mega-spectacle can be fun, sometimes big, loud shows can leave a spectator numb. There's no risk of that with Violet, an intimate piece that, in fact, never made it to the Great White Way. And it's just as well, really, since the emotional impact of this unjustly underrated show was a lot more suited to New York's 145-seat Playwrights Horizons theater, where it had a too-short run in 1997. Composer Jeanine Tesori is often mentioned in the same breath as Michael John LaChiusa and Adam Guettel. While she shares with them a desire to dust off the musical theater, she's also more comfortable than they are with various pop vernaculars. In Violet, which tells the story of a scarred young woman who goes on a road trip through North Carolina, Tennessee, Oklahoma, and Arkansas in the 1960s, Tesori used gospel, R&B, blues, and country, but the result is unmistakable musical theater and not a mish-mash of styles. Lauren Ward is spellbinding as the title character, and she later went on to be equally impressive in Sondheim's Saturday Night and the revival of 1776. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

I loved it when I heard just one song I knew I had to but it!
The birthday massacre is a awsome band from canada! The musics like twisted but really good techno-electric sounding with alternitive rock!
lovers end is my favorite song! Its like the lyrics are about love and then just kinda like heartbreaking something like that!
Very pleased it rox believe me!!!1
Something and Somewhere.......2007-03-01
I think lead singer Chibi's growling vocals on "Blue" were perfect. In fact, I wish more of their songs were like Blue. Her vocal work gave the song a menacing, freaky, almost nightmarish quality. And only part of the song is sung that way, which is also great; it gives more texture to the song.
I listen to a lot of heavier music -System of a Down, Overkill, Tiamat, Tristania, etc- and its a refreshing change when TBM comes up on my playlist. But some of the heavy bands have their softer moments, and I think TBM would be even greater if they had a few more heavier, dramatic songs like Blue.

"No, we're not gonna do Stonehenge...".......2007-07-08
During the first moments of the opening track, I thought "Grace Slick, Jefferson Airplane, 'Lather' from 'Crown of Creation'"...
Then the hand-clapping and the "HEYs!" began and visions of Spinal Tap and a Stonehenge that was in danger of being trampled by a dwarf filled my fevered brain...
Then I thought of Patton Oswalt's ongoing "Reno 911" character...the Renaissance Faire guy. I know it's Ritchie Blackmore on guitar but all I could visualize was Patton Oswalt.
Then I thought about Ritchie Blackmore and the excellent "California Jam: Deep Purple Live In California 74" DVD, and that scene at the end of "Space Truckin'" where he plays his Strat with his foot and proceeds to obliterate his Marshall stack, one of the TV cameras, the Strat itself, and pretty much anyone witnessing the event.
Then I imagined attending a Blackmore's Night concert in 2007 and after an hour and a half of being lulled to a restless slumber by the medievally numbing tones of fair damsel Candice, finding out that the encore would be "Smoke On The Water" as played on a lute with pan pipe accompaniment and I woke up screaming, only to find that I was safe at my computer keyboard and in the process of writing my Amazon review for "Under A Violet Moon."
Track after track after oxcart-driven track, this album keeps advancing, like a bustle in the hedgerow or a spring clean for the May Queen. 16 tracks later, I got out my copy of Motörhead's "Everything Louder Than Everything Else" and allowed the reassuring sonic warmth of "I'm So Bad, Baby I Don't Care" to envelop me like a comforting shroud.
I somehow sense that I will receive the highest number of "I did not find this review helpful" ratings in the history of Amazon. That's OK. If I have to choose between Bilbo Baggins or Lemmy Kilmister, I've made my choice. Flame away, if ye must. That's right...I said "YE." With revels and with wassails make grief and care our vassals, Fa-la!
Oy VEY. Gimme a break. Who LISTENS to this stuff?
Fairport Convention pretty much did what Blackmore's Night is doing, and they did it first, and they did it better. For those of you who want to sing the praises of the lovely Candice Night, I have two words for you:
"Sandy Denny."
Ritchie! I know you've had a hard time in the past getting along with others, but is this really the way you intend to spend the rest of your life? While you're peacefully plucking "Durch Den Wald Zum Bach Haus," do you sometimes get the urge to drag the Strat out of mothballs and let 'er rip? Remember how Ian Paice used to kick off the intro to "Fireball" and you'd come in a couple of seconds later like a freight train with that bruising speed boogie riff? You're REALLY OK with trading that for "Possum Goes to Prague?"
You wore the Deep Purple guys out...read the liner notes and watch the interviews from the "Montreux" collections that have been released in the last couple of years. They're very happy without you, and Steve Morse plays all of your old licks at least as well as you did. But maybe you could call up Coverdale and Hughes and do a "Burn Anniversary Tour" or something. Maybe after R.J.D. gets finished with the "Heaven And Hell" Sabbath tour you could put Rainbow back together. Just one tour and a live album. Is that asking too much? Do you remember "Long Live Rock And Roll?" Were you LYING to us? Did you REALLY mean "Long Live 16th Century Madrigals?" NO! You said it! Long Live ROCK AND ROLL!"
Remember that riff from "Man On The Silver Mountain?" That's YOUR riff! You WROTE it! Don't you EVER want to play it again on stage with 50 gazillion people screaming and cheering when you hit those first notes?
Ritchie! You're RITCHIE BLACKMORE! Come ON! How can you NOT want to be RITCHIE BLACKMORE again?
Blackmore's Night "Under a Violet Moon".......2007-06-29
Nice change of pace for Richie. I stumbled upon this tour and it was just an incredible sound! Very solid collection of tunes!
A new standard in modern folk renaisance music.......2007-03-08
I've been a fan of Richie Blackmore since I returned from my Vietnam combat experience. I have always been 'awed' by his arrangements and how he delivers. There are many musicians with incredible talent out there and I strayed being captivated by Steve Hackett, David Arkenstone and Chris Spheeris. Although, I am still a huge fan of these 3 musicians, in recently being turned on to Blackmmores Night, I have rediscovered my roots with Richie and his current music effort. This CD is the epitamy of the Richie's energy, I like so much and gets far more listening time than the others. However, I listen to all of his CD's a LOT.
SOLID.......2006-09-14
Another solid effort by Ritchie Blackmore. The track "Under a Violet Moon" is top of the line. I will say that I much prefer the more energetic version of it which is on the DVD. Ditto with "Wind in the Willow". But how cool is "Durch"? Or "Beyond the Sunset"?. Gotta love those instrumentals!!! Not that I have anything against Candy's smooth, yet unremarkable voice.....
I Hate To Admit It..........2006-03-19
but the cheese factor here is seriously high. This is the perfect music for a gaggle of aging hippies and their wannabe progeny to dance to at a morning Moonrise. Unlike other reviewers, I'm NOT impressed with the musicianship on this album. Now that Blackmore's found his soulmate, his music's turned giddy and touchy-feelie and happy and it's completely lost its creative forcefulness - the Billy Joel syndrome (anyone remember "Uptown Girl"?) Gone are the tour de force of Lazy and Child In Time and Black Night, and it has nothing to do with Heavy Metal vs. Modern Renaissance. When Blackmore was with DP, and even with Rainbow, he came up with music no one had heard before. He created a style anyone could identify after 10 notes, and inspired countless guitarists because of his creative brilliance. Now is the fall of that great guitar inspiration. The solos on Violet Moon are uncreative, pure and simple. Any gifted high school kid could write them. And while Candice has a beautiful voice, she's just another instrument for Blackmore to orchestrate. Regardless of how well she hits a note or sustains a melody, a mediocre Blackmore can only result in a mediocre Candice. And really, the lyrics - - cheese.
Violet Moon will appeal to a small niche audience. If you enjoy true Renaissance music, there are countless ensembles that do it far better. If you're a fan of Blackmore and want to hear the legend push the envelope in stirring new directions, stop and listen to the old stuff before you're sorely disappointed. This is no Clapton. But if you enjoy pseudo-Renaissance music played in a modern style, and can get over the cheese factor with Candice's singing and the lyrics, you probably will not be disappointed with this album. Without a doubt, there are some catchy tunes here. Besides, a mediocre Blackmore is still far better than most other stuff out there.
It is Blackmore, after all.

I am coming upon my third time performing in this show and I have never gotten sick of this music (which is saying something since I'm not a big fan of listening to showtunes). Like the very first reviewer, I was along with the high school cast who took it to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and have great memories with this show.
A touching story with timeless issues of race and struggling with your own self-image. It's about learning how to play with the cards that fate gives you. You may have a winning hand, a winning smile, but as this musical shows, even if you're dealt a poor hand, you can still succeed as long as you put all your chips and all your heart into the hand you have.
An unsung hero of a show..........2005-09-28
I love this show. This cd is FABULOUS! The technical aspect of the music is amazing with difficult harmonies, songwriting, timing etc...it all is blended SO well together for an amazing goose-pimpling experience. If you haven't heard of this show and want to be awed, listen to the music and you'll want to run to the theater to get a seat. no disappointments at all!
Amazing and underrated!.......2005-08-22
Tesori, the composer behind "Thoroughly Modern Millie", and more recently and impressively Tony Kushner's "Caroline, or Change" created one of my favorite musicals--right up there with Lippa's "The Wild Party" and Brown's "The Last 5 Years". This emotionally pumped, pop-infused story of a girl with a scar and her journey for it to stop tormenting her is beautifully performed here by all, with the standout for me being Michael McElroy as Flick, an african-American soldier that Violet meets on her trip. I use "pop" in the best way possible. The complexity and authenticity of the story is not compromised by the music as in some other musicals, but rather made more authentic since the brand of pop fits the time and place, while still sounding fresh. A great overlooked, underappreciated musical.
An usual musical -- surprising turns with every track.......2005-07-17
Like many reviewers, I am reviewing this after I had the sheer joy of performing it (I was Flick). Boy would I love to perform Flick again but I won't and you know why? Because this is one of those unfairly neglected gems that this so obscure and the mainstream musical theater audience really has no wind of it.
And I can understand why. Violet doesn't follow the popular musical theater formula. First off, it's based on a very serious and what some would call "dark" premise. It's about a woman in 1964 on her way to see a televangelist peacher so he can heal her of a terrible scar she received as a little girl. Second, Violet's music is glorious, but quite varied in style. One song will be a country ballad, the next, what sounds like Tina Turner should be singing, and the next, R&B, and the next, a soul gripping gospel number. That in itself may sway some listeners.
But let me tell you, the ending and THE MESSAGE that this musical sends is worth it all. It's so unusual in the the way it takes you this journey, that you become so compelled to feel for each of this characters.
To continue with it's premise, Violet meets along her way two friend soldiers: one black (Flick), one white (Monty). Violet and these soldiers learn to find affection in one another and an unusual love triangle forms as the soldiers fall for Violet (Monty openly, Flick secretly) where feelings are hurt and love is found. The audience is also unclear as in the beginning when the story seems understandable and innocent enough, the second act presents race and sex issues. However, the themes can be universally understood and appreciated.
Michael Elroy, Flick, is absolutely wonderful and perfect for the role. His hefty and sultry baritone has just a beautiful middle range and can do remarkable vocal feats as he flies to remarkably beautiful and sustained A's and B's, and one fantastic high falsetto Eb! Michael Park has the absolutely perfect country southern boy quality for Monty. His rendition of "You're Different" is so sentimental and poignant and just hits the spot. And his acting training is clearly evident. Lauren Ward stole the show and it sounds as if the role was written for her. I don't think she could be a show that fit her talents more perfectly. And what a great vehicle for her to learn her career on. She's a mezzo with a very healthy belt as well as a trained head voice all the way to a great F at the top of the staff.
The music is just beautiful and touching. "On My Way" is the central musical number as it ties up the themes so perfectly. The recording simply will not leave you bored as it is surprising with every track as new styles are infused and great acting compels you.

The Skeleton Key - sounds of the old South.......2007-04-11
Dark, stormy listening to take you to the marshlands of New Orleans - at times, clearly a soundtrack, but with tracks from the likes of Robert Johnson and the hoodoo beats of Iko Iko, you'll suddenly feel an inkling for Gumbo like a true bayou-dwelling Creole.
contains every compositional piece from the movie.......2006-08-04
This CD contains what I thought was every compositional piece from the movie. I was hoping the CD in general would be a little more up-beat and personally I found it a little bit boring to listen to. Listen carefully to the music of the movie becuase that is exactly what you get.
good soundtrack.......2006-01-13
If you are fan of the blues, or you simply enjoy eerie instrumental tunes, this soundtrack is for you.
It is very rare for me to find a soundtrack that contains all the songs i liked from a movie. This is the case! It even has Papa Justify's conjuration of sacrifice, those drums really take you to New Orleans Hoodoo streets. A great complement for the fans of the movie .
Review from Equalmusic.com.......2005-10-28
If you are jonesing for the way New Orleans' used to be or are kicking yourself hard because you never made the pilgrimage down before the recent tragedy, then the soundtrack to The Skeleton Key is your best bet. Like the movie, the soundtrack transports the audience into the bayou culture with such ease that at times it's almost hard to believe that you're not in fact below the Mason-Dixon Line. Released on Varese Records, it is the perfect accompaniment to the film.
Composer Edward Shearmur and the Hollywood Studio Symphony bring the flick to life with their bone chilling orchestrations that can creep you out even in the light of day. Those who dig the horror aspect of the film will be pleased with the inclusion of "Conjure of Sacrifice," a spoken track key to the movie's plot. However, the real reason to buy this release is not for its freaky facets but for its spotlight on a few of the most influential blues artists of the twentieth century.
For anyone beginning to cultivate an interest in blues, this is a great foray into the genre and its heavy hitters. First off is Robert Johnson's "Come On In My Kitchen." Johnson, who many have dubbed the father of modern rock and roll, delivers his legendary take on Delta Blues with perfection. Mississippi Fred McDowell, master of the slide guitar, whether it be bottleneck or the apocryphal steak bone, lends his "61 Highway Blues" with a kind of raw integrity.
My vote however, goes to celebrated gospel musician, Blind Willie Johnson. His "God Moves On The Water" with its crackly sound quality, delivers a sucker punch to the soul. Johnny Farmer's "Death Letter" is easily the best track the recording has to offer. Farmer, the only bluesman on the disc still alive and kicking it, loans an infectious ditty that seeps into the skin and refuses to be washed away. Haunting and beat driven, the song is given a modern remix by southern rapper, Organized Noize. The marriage of Delta and hip-hop here is flawless.
Of course there are a few missteps and oddities. Blackbud's "Barefoot Dancing" is a jarring departure from the easy bayou theme. The song is ill suited to both movie and soundtrack, a definite skipper. As is Joe Washburn's "The Goldrush," which despite its melodic back music has a whiny quality that's hard to overlook. "Do Watcha Wanna" by Rebirth Brass Band is an interesting addition. It is a lively big band song that puts one in the mood for Mardi Gras. A rare gem is The Dixie Cups' version of the old Indian Mardi Gras chant "Iko Iko." Although given sinister connotations in the film, it is a fun and upbeat addition to the disc.
Seeped in New Orleans' jazz and Cajun music, the CD captures the music of The Big Easy and its surrounding parishes with forthright conviction. With the latest disaster still a fresh wound, the soundtrack as well as the film is jarring in ways that have nothing to do with the practice of voodoo. However, it is its ability to elegantly capture the culture and feel of the place that make both worth looking into. If only for a little while New Orleans's is returned to its former splendor through the music it has become known for. I suggest seeing the movie first then checking out this superb auxiliary.
Spooky good fun!.......2005-09-01
I bought this soundtrack mostly for the song that played during the opening and end credits, "Death Letter" by Johnny Farmer (with some fun added drum beats and enhancement by Organized Noize). The song (as well as the rest of the soundtrack) was mixed by Chris Fogel. The rest of the soundtrack is a mix of old bayou songs and Edward Shearmur's shamelessly delicious score. It's spooky with a taste of the old South. It's a lot of fun and one of the most entertaining soundtracks I have heard in a while.

Repetitive but Worthwhile.......2007-07-15
With the exquisite opening track, 'First Love', Alexander Chen sets the tone for his album: melancholic and wistful, but no less youthful for that. Strings, synths, and sleigh bells float in and out of earshot, forming layers around the pulsing guitar and all-but-whispered vocals. Chen manages to mingle urgency and emotion with listless detachment, and the result is both elegant and accessible .
Where this album falls short, however, is in its unwillingness to stray from that dreamy style. By the middle of the album, the listener is ready for a song that doesn't contain the lyrics "past", "forget", or "fading". There is little to no deviation from this autumnal mood, and the listening can become laborsome by the end. One begins to see just how fitting Chen's title, Boy in Static, really is.
My advice? Enjoy this album while you've got your iPod on shuffle, for a bit of variety, or when you're in a particularly nostalgic state of mind (and want to stay there). Despite its repetitiveness, 'Violet' is a haunting and evocative thing of beauty, and isn't one to be missed.
love this album.......2007-05-31
lyrics are thoughtful, moving, sad, but tinted with hope. music is tantalizing and unique. boy in static sounds like a hybrid between radiohead and snow patrol. melodic yet dissonant. every song sounds like a harmonic contradiction. this is definitely a new sound and worth every penny.

Angela Hewitt is best known for her excellent Bach recordings, but in her less-comprehensive series of Couperin's works written for the harpsichord she matches that high standard. Fans of the French Baroque will know this music and may need to adjust to the sound of the piano. But the open-minded will be captivated by her buoyant playing and by her refusal to imitate the harpsichord. Instead, she brings the resources of the modern concert grand to bear on these stylized scores--"authenticity" becomes irrelevant to the immense pleasure generated. Hewitt's ornamentation is stylishly convincing, as is her wit, attention to detail, and beautiful tonal production. She plays all of the Treizième Ordre and a generous selection of pieces from Couperin's other works, focusing on those she believes work best on the piano. The captivating result makes one sorry that, as she writes in her lucid notes, this will be the last of her Couperin series. Hyperion's vibrant sound does full justice to Hewitt's colorful playing. -- Dan Davis
Customer Reviews:
Endlessly delightful.......2006-03-05
While I agree that these selections do not match the grandeur of Hewitt's previous recording, they do exude as much -- if not more -- charm and elegance as ever before. Hewitt's playing is nimble, delicate, lucid, and heartfelt. Amazingly coupled with the grace and fluidity of the performances is a captivating touchingness and melancholy. The only disappointment for me is that this is the end of the cycle. Would that there were more!!
More French Baroque music on piano.......2005-12-02
With this third volume, Angela Hewitt concludes her survey of Couperin's major keyboard music and proves that, in the hands of someone as steeped in Baroque keyboard style as herself, music which was previously thought the exclusive domain of the harpsichordist can be fully expressed on modern piano to great effect. So how does this third and last CD compare? In Volume I, we had mostly Couperin's earlier works of great granduer, inventiveness, pure charm and full of sunny, dancing melodies. Then in Volume II (the late works) the landscape darkened a bit with Couperin's most personal expressions of touching poignancy and deep melancholy. Volume III here is a mixture of these moods and showcases the imaginative 13th Ordre with its creative mimicking of twelve characters from a masked ball (of the era of Louis XIV) along with several wonderfully ponderous pieces in true Couperin poetry.
Not only is Hewitt's survey of Couperin's music here rather ground-breaking (given few if any recordings done on the piano for them), but it also sets a high standard. Hewitt's gingerly touch, knack for dance rhythms and poetic depth are well-suited to Couperin's graceful, inventive and sadness-tinged music. Right from the rhythmic opening movement and its "tripping" theme, Miss Hewitt sets a delightful and confident attitide towards this music. In the next two gentle pieces, her lyrical depths emerge to meld with Couperin's melancholic intent. This same emotive playing finds its home in several moving, introspective works (tracks 19, 21 and 26) suggestve of the composer's deep yearings and sadness (from perhaps his health struggles). In all these, Miss Hewitt seems to really find the emotional core and present it to us with great tenderness and artistry.
But, soon the fun and frolic begins with "Les Folies Francoises" - a delightful and imaginative miniature "theme-and-variations" ordre in which each variation parodies some virture or emotion (hope, jealousy, fidelity, despair etc). As such it is truly early "programmic music" - as is most of Couperin's music with their odd titles. In the masked ball parody, Hewitt covers the range of expressive textures brilliantly - from the festivity in the "Couquetry" piece to the dark moodiness of "Jealousy" played in the lower half of the keyboad. As the pianist quotes in her abundant notes, "This work is a microcosm of Couperin's art, its tragic passion, its whitty urbanity, its sensuous charm." Indeed.
Once again here we see Miss Hewitt's mastery of the composer and his music - most notably her scrupulous attention to detail to Couperin's precise score notations. Her skill in these most-important ornamentations show both a well-studied approach and fine taste, integrating them into the tapestry of the music smoothly and attractively. As such, her playing really has a more gentle, feminine quality in its appeal. Hewitt certainly makes a strong case for this music on piano, especially the greater nuance of expression afforded the piano in the slower movements. I know some insist this music is best suited for the harpsichord, but it is hard to resist this artist's ability to produce music of such tonal beauty and pianistic richness. Her emphasis on such tonal beauty is once again fully supported by Hyperion who produced a sparkling clear and bright sound quality (much like Volume II) with richly developed timbre from her Steinway in an attractive, mildly resonant recording ambiance.
While there are many fascinating textures and themes played marvelously by Angela Hewitt in this third release, I have to admit I found the pieces in the first two Hyperion recordings slightly more musically interesting in scope, granduer, lyricism and expressiveness. If you are wondering which one to get first, I would say definately Volume I. But, overall, Hewitt plays this music most elgantly and with just the right elan and sensitively to Couperin's intent. I find a refreshing quality in all her Couperin recordings that makes them some of my favorite to play throughout the day. They are easy on the ear, yet musically rich and satisfying. Fans of Angela Hewitt or the French Baroque should find more of a good thing here in Hewitt's third Couperin CD and much to celebrate in her delicate and tasteful pianism. Also her very useful accompanying notes to guide you along add to the attractiveness of this release. And the cover art is particular sumptuous as well. Rating - 4.5 stars.
And continuing in the tradition of French keyboard music, Angela Hewitt has since recorded works by Emmanuel Chabrier and Rameau - both on the Hyperion label.

life after Siobhan (Shuv-on)............2005-11-12
This is it! the first project recorded by Sarah Dallin & Keren Woodword (a.k.a Bananarama). Since losing bandmates Jaqui O'Sullivan and , original bandmate Siobhan Fahey. The previous 3 released LP's are awsome too, if you can gain access to those as well, they are "WOW!",-Siobhan's last recording w/ the band, "Pop Life"-only Lp recording w/ Jaqui O'Sullivan. And last,"Please Yourself"-(import release only*)and first release as a duo! And then of course there's "Ultra Violet", the first released LP in the states as a duo, Includes an occassional ballad such as: "Maybe The Next Time". But overall a bass-thumping, club-sounding, dance-vibe feel LP. Stand-out tracks include: "Don't Stop Me Now", "Every Shade Of Blue", "System", "Give In To Me", & "I Found Love". Of course there's more but I have to leave you some surprises! You won't regret this purchase or this album, ecspecially those who love Bananarama, club-feel music, those who love to dance & party! And of course ALL will appriciate Bananarama's new sound on this one....there's is life after Siobhan!
This one should be called WOW!.......2005-10-04
As the occasional Bananarama fan (I bought their first two records on vinyl) I have always been slightly amused by the output of these girls and the devotion of some maniacal Bananarama fans - so I picked this up cheap and it is GREAT! GREAT! WOW! "Every Shade Of Blue" is one of their top 3 best singles - a true gem. This is a very interesting recording and quite satisfying all around! Go Girls!
one of their best!.......2005-01-14
This album may be 9 years old, but it still sounds great!! Everyone who has been over to my apartment and heard it has commented on it positively, without exception-now that's makes for a great review. There are a few slower-tempo songs, but mostly, it's filled with fast, club-sounding music. (I almost always use this disc for my workouts, as it's perfect for aerobics, etc.) The two girls vocals are delicious. [...]
STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART!!!.......2002-06-25
This is one of the best Techno CD's out there! I was plesantly surprised at how fabuluos the songs are. The vocals are strong ,sexy & breathly . With their preformance of the songs they sing like true DIVAS . It seems like they can do it all, sing ,songwrite and always look so fabulously beautiful and more. This CD is such a must have for not just fans of Bananarama but for ALL lovers and fanatics of Electronic/Dance music especially Techno/House and beat driven raw Techno[TECHNO]. The lyrics really come straight from the heart!
Awesome.......2002-06-24
This is my favorite Bananarama album. I bought this tape when it first came out and listened to it for months and am planning on buying the CD soon. Every song is extremely catchy and fun to listen to. It's a shame this didn't become popular like their 80's stuff did because this is just as good.
