While 110 in the Shade isn't as familiar to audiences as Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones's The Fantasticks (but then what is?), the original Broadway production was a modest success in 1963 and this 1999 studio recording makes a compelling case for its evocative and beautiful music. Based on N. Richard Nash's play The Rainmaker, it's set in a western state in the middle of a devastating drought. Enter a stranger (Ron Raines) who promises to bring rain, but first must convince the town spinster (Karen Ziemba, 2000 Tony winner for Contact) of his powers--and of course romance ensues. (Music Man, anyone?) This excellent studio cast (also including Richard Muenz and Walter Charles, plus Kristin Chenoweth in a cameo) features a number of principals from the 1992 New York City Opera revival, and the two-disc set incorporates new songs from that production as well as transitional music and underscoring to create a complete recording that is a near-theatrical experience. The choral and orchestral work is outstanding, and the beautiful booklet includes a detailed synopsis, an essay on Schmidt and Jones as well as new notes by both, and photographs, but no lyrics. As an extra treat, though, the booklet also has Schmidt's striking paintings, which he used to help him visualize certain scenes as he was composing. This is very simply one of JAY's best releases ever. --David Horiuchi

More than four decades after its Broadway debut, the Roundabout Theatre's 2007 revival of 110 in the Shade is a glorious showcase for soprano Audra McDonald, and an eloquent statement for an underrated and neglected work. Based on N. Richard Nash's play The Rainmaker, 110 in the Shade tells the story of a Texas town stuck in a blistering heat wave. Lizzie (McDonald), the daughter of a local widower (Broadway veteran and TV star John Cullum), has resisted all suitors, including the sheriff (Christopher Innvar), until a potential huckster named Starbuck (Steve Kazee) arrives in town promising to bring rain ("The Rain Song"). Just like Marian the librarian, Lizzie thinks she sees right through the scam ("You're Not Fooling Me"). McDonald shines in her solos ("Love, Don't Turn Away," "Old Maid"), but Cullum, Innvar, and Kazee also get their moments either in duets with McDonald ("A Man and a Woman," "Simple Little Things," "Is It Really Me?") or by themselves. 110 in the Shade is obscure compared to Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt's most famous work, The Fantasticks--none of its songs ever entered the popular culture like "Try to Remember"--but it's a beautiful, evocative score that is tailor-made for McDonald's rich voice. It's also much more sumptuous than The Fantasticks, even in Jonathan Tunick's pared-down, Tony-nominated orchestrations. (Also nominated were McDonald, Cullum, lighting designer Christopher Akerlind, and the show itself for Best Revival of a Musical.) P.S. Classics puts out its usual first-rate package, with color photos, introduction by Peter Filichia, synopsis, and libretto. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars 110 In The Shade Revival CD - Next Best Thing to Being at The Show.......2007-07-15

Any fan of 110 In The Shade will appreciate this recording; it is very well recorded and features the stunning vocal performance of Audra McDonald. This CD more than holds its own when compared to the studio cast version of 1997 and it is head and shoulders above the original cast recording of 1963.

If you have seen the recent revival at Studio 54, or you are a fan of the show, you will definitly want to have a copy of this CD

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Cast Album.......2007-07-13

Saw a number from this show on the Tony Awards and ordered it immediately. Was not disappointed. The whole album is wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous recording of a terrific score.......2007-07-12

This is simply the best recording of 110 In The Shade, a sadly neglected show by the composer and lyricist of The Fantasticks. It's a far superior score to The Fantasticks, but the original show didn't enjoy a long run on Broadway. Listen to the original broadway cast and I think you can hear why. The original cast sounds pallid in comparison to the cast on this terrific recording led by Audra MacDonald, who seems to have finally found a great part for herself. The supporting cast does not disappoint and the orchestra plays brightly. The only competition to this set is a British recording (now out of print) with cast that featured Karen Ziemba. That's a good set but Audra MacDonald's performance makes this recording the definitive version.

5 out of 5 stars My new favorite show.......2007-07-12

Oh wow! The music in this show is beautiful and fun. The cast is loaded with amazing voices with Audra McDonald shining above all. Her "Raunchy" number is outstanding and keeps a grin on your face from beginning to end. I've always loved the "Rainmaker" play and the music, for me, just makes it even better. Both male leads have voices that could melt a maid's heart and I'm just glad it's not me having to choose between the two!

3 out of 5 stars It's not 110%.......2007-07-05

The CD is well produced and Audra McDonald is wonderful, but most of the music sounds dated and old fashioned. Maybe that's because the show is dated and old fashioned.

I performed this musical back in high school. It was great to relive the songs and dance. Will make a wonderful addition to any musical lovers collection!

5 out of 5 stars One heck of a wonderful musical.......2004-05-27

I can't tell you how much I love "110 in the Shade."

I was fortunate enough to be in a regional revival of this work several years ago. At that time, I was astounded that "110" wasn't more widely performed. I am even more astounded that it still remains relatively unknown and unheard.

Without a doubt, "110" is one of the most beautiful Broadway scores I've ever experienced.

Lush orchestration. Gorgeous, memorable (and oh, SO sing-able tunes). And songs which directly express and support the characterization/plot/action/setting found within the play upon which it is based.
The Original Cast album has been out of print on LP for decades. And the CD reissue of that is also out of print.
The recent, more complete CD recording, was a revelation to me. I found it only a few days ago.
I was thrilled to hear many of the excerpts (I remembered from the staged production in which I took part) restored on the two CD set. I had forgotten many of those. I didn't realize how much I had missed them in the Original Cast recording.
I do have to say that I prefer (somewhat) Inga Swenson in the role of Lizzie. Especially in "Old Maid." Swenson packs an emotional wallop (in the final notes of that) which may be very slightly lacking in the recent CD recording. But I do love what the recent Lizzie does with the role. I admit that my ears are attuned to Swenson, and I probably will come revise my opinion on this.

But as far as Starbuck.

WOW! What a difference!

Ron Raines (with whom I once worked) is a wonderful singer/actor.
There is so much more depth in his protagonist...and so much more voice.

Robert Horton (the original Starbuck) was no lightweight. And he sings better than many would expect. But he was no Ron Raines.
The rest of the cast (in the present CD issue) are all exceptional.

I have to beg to differ with someone who posted a review saying that the show (of which he saw a production) was forgettable, except for one good dance sequence.

I had never heard the dance music before this CD edition. What I'm talking about is the dance in the second act picnic scene. The production I was in omitted it.

I can't tell you how jarring it was for me to hear a dance (tap?) break inserted into that scene. It seems totally incongruous and out of character with the rest of the show. I can see why the director with whom I worked chose to omit it. Still, it is interesting to finally hear it. It probably works better on stage than on CD.

Anyway.

I can't recommend this CD (or the show itself) highly enough.

Anyone who is interested in hearing a musical which hasn't been performed very often (or anyone who is looking for a forgotten classic of American Musical Theatre) really MUST listen to this recording.
You will not be sorry for having bought this CD set.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful surprise!.......2002-03-09

Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones are best known for their chamber musical, THE FANTASTICKS. 110 IN THE SHADE is another sweet little musical with a simple story, so I must admit that I was hesitant to purchase such a pricey recording of the show. Why the high price? It's a foreign import and it's a double CD, even though it features only 97 minutes of music. Despite the price, this is one of my favorite recordings I own of any musical.

THE STORY:
Lizzie Curry, a likeable, well-educated, but somewhat awkward woman, worries that she will become an old maid. However, in the course of a 24-hour period in the Western town in which she lives with her brothers and father, her self confidence is restored through her conversations with two men: File, the local sheriff who's considered the most eligible bachelor in town, and Starbuck, a fast-talking traveler who claims he can break the town's drought.
In my opinion, although the story is well-written (based on N. Richard Nash's THE RAINMAKER) and the score is great (except for "Lizzie's Comin' Home"), this is a difficult musical to do well. The actress playing the part of Lizzie must walk a fine line between being sympathetic or merely pathetic.

THE RECORDING:
Fortunately for us, one of the first musicals that album producer John Yap saw in London was 110 IN THE SHADE, and it moved him. Inspired by the 1992 New York City Opera revival of the show, Yap has given it a complete symphonic recording, including the underscoring and the alternate arrangements of several pieces by the City Opera production. The liner notes, so often a problem in JAY Productions recordings, are detailed and informative, much of them written by Jones. It's obvious that the production of this recording has been a labor of love by all involved.

The leads are fantastic. Stealing the show is Karen Ziemba, star of the City Opera production. She makes Lizzie noble while still exposing her insecurities. Her voice soars on three of the best numbers in the score: "Love, Don't Turn Away," "Simple Little Things," and "Is It Really Me?" Some people may argue that her voice becomes a bit whiny in the original take of "Raunchy", but I argue that she uses this vocal tone to show Lizzie's discomfort. Her dialogue over some of the underscoring is so well done, it's almost poetic.

Ron Raines makes an excellent Starbuck, with all the brashness and surprising "introspectiveness" needed to pull off the part. Jones comments on Raines' performance of the "Rain Song": "...it never worked the way it should until I heard Ron's rendition." Raines' take on "Melisande" is wonderful, too. His acting talents are also apparent in the spoken dialogue.

Richard Muenz (also from the City Opera cast) rounds out the leads as File. While I am not usually a fan of Muenz's work, his vocal qualities are a perfect match for the lonely sheriff, especially on "Gonna Be Another Hot Day," "A Man and a Woman," and "Why Can't They Leave Me Alone?" His rendition of the "Poker Polka" is also excellent, although it seems a bit out of character.

The supporting cast (including Schmidt and Jones in small speaking parts) is great. The standout is Kristin Chenoweth as Snookie in "Little Red Hat."

SUMMARY:
It's an expensive recording, but it's very good. This is a must-have for Broadway fanatics. Wait for it to go on sale, or buy it used.

5 out of 5 stars Heaven.......2001-11-07

Schmidt and Jones are tragically underrrated as Broadway composers; everything they do combines beauty with intelligence. Nowhere is this more in evidence than 110 IN THE SHADE, and this recording is absolutely fabulous.

There have always been some people who hate this score -- I suspect they find the Texas accents corny or trivial, a tad "Lone Ranger". And there is little sex or "grit" in the score other than "Raunchy" -- this one is not about "You Go Girl" in any way.

But if you can see vernacular beauty in the accent and don't need bumping and grinding à la CHICAGO, then this score is truly magnificent -- the Rodgers and Hammerstein model divested of saccharinity and applied to some real people.

This recording is just stunning. The orchestra sounds fantastic. Karen Ziemba is not a GREAT singer, but thoroughly adequate and, as such, a more plausible gal out on the plains than the creator of the role, Inga Swenson, who sounded like she would rather have been doing LA BOHEME. Everybody else is cast just right, including the nice treat of Kristin Chenoweth in LITTLE RED HAT.

The going wisdom has always been that Robert Horton's Starbuck was somehow inadequate, that he was just stuck in because he was a TV star, and wasn't up to the task. I have never quite understood this -- maybe there was something wrong with him on stage (I am too young to have caught the original), but as far as singing goes, he sounds great on the original to me, and I suspect that the verdict on him was due in part to a reflexive anti-television snobbery. And if anything, his youth fit the part in lending him an earnest callowness that the more burnished Ron Raines does not have. However, Raines does quite well.

Of course there are little issues. Edwards sometimes conducts too slowly. I think he is trying to bring out the luscious Hershy Kay orchestrations (and God, they are good -- just listen to how much he sticks into something as potentially throwaway as "Lizzie's Comin' Home"), but at times this means subverting the intended atmosphere. "The Rain Song" really should be more peppily revivalistic than the leisurely tempo Edwards takes, even if he allows us to hear every fillip in the wind and brass section, for example.

But then NO recording will ever strike any individual listener as perfect, and at least Edwards' intentions are good. This is THE recording of 110 IN THE SHADE, complete with bonus tracks of City Opera arrangements. These two CDs eloquently demonstrate that many Broadway musicals are substantial musical literature, one of America's most valuable contributions to art. If you can hear sincerity in a country accent and don't need "hot" in your musical theatre scores, then buy this one -- support JAY so that they will keep recording America's musical theatre legacy while American companies are too crass to realize they should be doing it themselves.

... 110 in the Shade is a great show with wonderful music, one of which, Is It Really Me? became a standard. It is brought to brilliant life by this recording. A wonderful recording of a wonderful show. Five stars recommendation!!!

5 out of 5 stars Another fine addition to the series.......2001-02-13

After a bit of a slip with the second, this series was back on track with this third CD of songs cut from well-known musicals. As I mentioned in a previous review, just about any successful musical has had songs cut from it, not always because the song wasn't good, but because it no longer fit the show as updated, or a character or scene was cut (the booklet explains why each song was removed from its show). Once again, the songs are all good and the performances are wonderful. My favorites are "Mama's Talking Soft" (cut from Gypsy), "Big Fat Heart" (Seesaw), "Your Own College Band" (Where's Charley?), "When I Go Out Walkin' with my Baby" (Oklahoma!), and "Pick Up the Pieces" (also Seesaw). Bruce Kimmel was smart in using show singers instead of pop singers. I recommend the entire series. This CD features some fine songs that deserve renewed appreciation.

5 out of 5 stars Theatrical and Heartening.......2002-08-27

I now own both recordings of this show, and without any doubt, find this recording the most preferable. The vocal qualities of all three leading players are superlative. It is unfortunate that Broadway audiences did not get to experience this musicalisation of "The Rainmaker." Inga Swenson is an actress who has been missed by American audiences. I understand she sustained an ankle injury that caused the show to fold shortly after opening. Her characterization comes through radiantly on the CD. She registers so many emotions it would be impossible to list them all here. The other performances also contain fire and brilliance. The men's voices (lyric baritones) are full of character and life as well.
The newer recording is a disappointment. The two gentlemen are very fine, but Ms. Ziemba, at present one of Broadway's darlings, is vocally not suited for the role. The piece is written for a lyric Soprano. She is a belter, and her singing lacks head voice -- a definite requirement for the part of Lizzie. I looked forward to hearing the entire score, but after listening to the first disc, I quickly put on the RCA original cast and was reintroduced to expressive, lyrical singing that told a story via vocal quality. I suggest the Original Recording hands down to anyone.

4 out of 5 stars Great Forgotten Show.......2002-02-08

This show ran a bit shorter than Schmidt and Jone's Fantasticks- but it was a better show. Nash's Rainmaker was a perfect vehicle for a musical and Inga Swenson as Lizzie was brilliant. It's a shame she only did a few shows before reaching fame on TV in Benson. Now, Robert Horton was already famous on TV when he did this show and afterwards he happily returned (never to try singing again). The supporting cast was great, particularly Stephen Douglass.

    Don't miss this great score.

5 out of 5 stars Best Broadway cd ever.......1998-12-28

This is one of the best Broadway recordings ever! It has a very energetic score and the songs will pick you up if you are feeling low. The cast fit perfect in their parts and the story is wonderful (although cliche). If you're looking for a bright and cheerful change to todays brooding scores and songs get this cd and you'll treasure it forever!!!!!

I BOUGHT THIS CD DUE TO THE FACT THAT I LOVE "PACIFIC OVERTURES" AND THE THOUGHT OF A SYMPHONIC SUITE OF THIS WORK INTRIGUED ME. THE RECORDING IS VERY SUB-STANDARD,I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT CONDUCTOR PAUL GEMIGNANI HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH THIS!? I AM DUMBSTRUCK. THE TRACKS THEMSELVES ARE SOMETIMES TRUNCATED ESPECIALLY THE "PORGY AND BESS" SEGMENT,WHICH HAD THE SUSPICIOUS TITLE OF "INTRODUCTION" IT DOESNT LAST MORE THAN 3 MINS!?? BUTCHERED IN ITS BREVITY. I AM NOT AMUSED.

5 out of 5 stars So many great songs.......2007-02-26

So many great songs almost lost. How is it possible that a Kander & Ebb song like Mr Ten Percent got cut? This CD is worth its cost for that one song alone, but this disc is chock full of great songs that didn't make it to opening night...

5 out of 5 stars The Missing Songs from Some Major Musicals.......2003-12-02

This is the first of four CDs that contain recordings of songs that for one reason or another were cut from their shows. Highlights include:

From 110 DEGREES IN THE SHADE:
"Sweetriver" - replaced in the show by "Love Don't Look Away", parts of the melody appear in "Everything Beautiful Happens at Night".
"Flibbertigibbet" - became "Raunchy" in the musical. The music is pretty much the same, but the lyrics are a bit different.

          From THE KING AND I:
"Waiting" - Anna sings her frustration of being kept waiting for weeks to see the King. This song was cut after the premier of the show in New Haven.

          From FIDDLER ON THE ROOF:
"Dear, Sweet Sewing Machine" - A lullaby sung at the start of the second act by the tailor and Tzeitel. Cut because audiences in previews just didn't respond.

          From WEST SIDE STORY:
"Like Everybody Else" - a short fugue for the delinquents A-Rab (the "Shrimp"), Baby John (the young one) and Anybodys (the girl) intended to lighten up the first act. This song was edged out by "Gee, Officer Krupke".

          From PETER PAN:
"When I Went Home" - a ballad sung by Peter about the time he tried to go back to his old life, and found everyone had moved on. Seems to have been replaced by the lullaby "Distant Melody".

          From ANNIE GET YOUR GUN:
Annie's song about keeping her ego in check when she sees herself on the larger-than-life poster advertising the show. Cut possibly because the melody was too challenging to sing.

Other tracks on this CD include songs cut from CHICAGO, ONCE ON THIS ISLAND, PROMISES PROMISES, THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD, FIORELLO!, SILK STOCKINGS and THE HAPPY TIME.

If you enjoyed this CD, you must check out the other three in the series. Also, the same label, Varese Sarabande, has a series and a few composer albums of UNSUNG MUSICALS.

4 out of 5 stars ONCE ON THIS ISLAND RULES.......2001-07-02

I'm not usually one to buy a CD for just one track...but in this case, I have to admit, that's precisely what I did. Anyone who has seen the musical, ONCE ON THIS ISLAND or had a chance to listen to its soundtrack will be won over. The idea that there were songs cut from this marvelous, "every song is a winner" album, was just impossible for me to resist. And WHEN DANIEL MARRIES in this CD does not disappoint. La Chanze's voice is absolutely marvelous. And the bonus? The other tracks are pleasing and fun for any Broadway buff: Liz Callaway's HONEY from Merrily We Roll Along is musically winning. I also liked the songs cut from GYPSY and FLOWER DRUM SONG. For an impulsive buy, I was completely rewarded. I have also ordered the other CD in the series for the ONCE ON THIS ISLAND song, DOWN FROM THE TREE...which also carries a Liz Callaway song. For musical enthusiasts, this series is a nice collector's item...and something to play on a rainy day.

5 out of 5 stars The first in this great series.......2001-02-13

This CD is the first in a fine series of four releases consisting of songs cut from well-known musicals. Just about any successful musical has had songs cut from it, not always because the song wasn't good, but because it no longer fit the show as updated, or a character or scene was cut (the booklet explains why each song was removed from its show). The songs are all good, some better than others or course, and the performances are wonderful. My favorites are "Ten Percent" (cut from Chicago), "Come Down from the Tree" (Once on this Island), "An English Music Hall" (Mystery of Edwin Drood), and "Take it in your Stride" (Annie Get Your Gun). Bruce Kimmel was smart in using show singers instead of pop singers. I recommend the entire series. This one's a great start and a fine addition to any show music collection.

4 out of 5 stars Lost Songs From Musicals Are Fun To Hear!!.......2001-01-18

The "Lost In Boston" series, starting with this first disc, is a great set to have. There are some songs that are pretty apparent as to why they were cut from the show, but others that you might scratch your head about. Some great performers get the opportunity to record these hardly, if ever, heard before songs and preserve them on disc.

Of particular note on this particular disc are Lillias White singing "Come Down From The Tree" from "Once On This Island." This is a beautiful, beautiful song and while it may not have worked on stage, it works very well on CD.

From such classical musicals as "The King And I" comes "Waiting." This song, designed as a trio between the King, Anna, and the Krahalome is interesting to hear, but definitely is not on the same page as "Getting to Know You" or "Something Wonderful," both classic songs from the show.

Also of interest are the songs from "West Side Story," "Fiddler On The Roof," and what was almost the song that Annie Oakley sang in "Annie Get Your Gun" instead of "There's No Business Like Show Business."

This is a fun disc. It does have that overproduced sound that tends to be Bruce Kimmel's trademark, but it's still interesting to hear what almost made it in.
