Bravo Giovanni (1962 Original Broadway Cast) [Soundtrack]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Classical bass Cesare Siepi made his Broadway debut with this 1962 show. Haven't heard of it? No wonder; it closed after 76 performances. Set in Rome, the show has a convoluted plot that involves the rivalry between two restaurants, one a mom-and-pop trattoria, the other a chainlike establishment. Siepi doesn't do so well with the farcical show tunes ("Breachy's Law"), but he lets it rip on such songs as "If I Were the Man" and the vivacious "We Won't Discuss It." (One can only dream of what might have happened to him had he been cast in, say, South Pacific.) As is so often true in musicals, the women steal the show. As Giovanni's brassy love interest, Michele Lee belts out "I'm All I've Got" and "Steady, Steady," a song so good that it could have been written by Jule Styne (a swinging version from Lee's 1966 solo album is a bonus track here). Those who don't care much for mock Italianate shenanigans should go straight for Maria Kornilova's "The Kangaroo," a delirious number in which she goes over various dances ("You hop! You hop! You wiggle and then you hop!") with a gusto that's Broadway at its best: it's over the top, it knows it, and it doesn't care. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

MOZART IT ISN'T, BUT "BRAVO GIOVANNI" IS FUN, NON-THE-LESS . . . .......2006-08-31
May 19, 1962 - Broadhurst Theatre, NY, USA . . . What a casting coup: Cesare Siepi, the finest Don Giovanni of his day, as the lead in a new musical called BRAVO GIOVANNI!!!
Widely regarded as one of the greatest pieces of music ever composed, Mozart's opera about the legendary Don Juan has been a staple since it premiered at the Estates Theatre in Prague on October 29, 1787. After is 76 performances on Broadway (except for a staged reading of the show a few years ago in Cleveland), I don't believe BRAVO GIOVANNI has ever been staged, and it's quite unlikely that it ever will be. Perhaps the culprit is A. J. Russell's book, based on "The Crime of Giovanni Venturi" by Howard Shaw, because the score is really quite charming.
Kelly Ferjutz writes on Cool Cleveland .com: " . . . it's a perfectly delightful musical comedy of the 1960s. It's not at all in-your-face, being rather sweet and nice and innocent in its nature. Nothing wrong with that at all. It has tuneful singable songs--bunches of them--with clever lyrics. It has a couple of gorgeous love ballads--one sung by Giovanni to Miranda, his love--and one sung by her to him. There are a couple of comedic patter songs--one of them an Italian menu set to music (which would certainly make one hungry just listening), and one sung by the inebriated antagonist." Not to mention Maria Karnilova's show-stopping rendition of "The Kangaroo." Curiously, the one minor hit from the show, "Steady, Steady," is also the only song that really doesn't "fit" with the rest of the score. What the heck.
Known to millions from TVs "Knot's Landing," Michelle Lee was only 19 when GIOVANNI opened on Broadway. And she's a knockout as Miranda. After the show closed, she replaced Bonnie Scott as Rosemary in HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING and repeated the role in the 1967 film version. She also received a Tony nomination for 1973's SEESAW. Cesare Siepi is marvelous in the title role. He'll make you believe the songs are better than they actually are. What a voice! In 1989 he made another Broadway appearance in the ill-fated CARMELINA. In addition to Ms. Karnilova (Golde in FIDDLER ON THE ROOF; Madame Hortense in ZORBA), able support is given by George S. Irving, David Opatoshu and a fine chorus of waitrons, tourists, and native Romans.
DON GIOVANNI it isn't, but it's fun nevertheless. Thanks to DRG for resurrecting BRAVO GIOVANNI and other obscure shows from musical limbo.)
Recommended.
really only good for the performance of Michele Lee.......2003-02-07
BRAVO GIOVANNI is a dismal Broadway musical, perhaps only redeemed by the always-reliable performers Michele Lee and Maria Karnilova.
The score by Ronny Graham and Milton Shafer attempts to bridge the gap between Broadway and Italian music, but only really has a few golden moments; most memorable are Michele Lee's songs "I'm all I've Got" and "Steady, Steady". Maria Karnilova also impresses in her now-legendary "Kangaroo".
The cast is headed by Cesare Siepi. I wish I could say that he rises above the material here, but he is drowned by the maudlin lyrics and average melodies that infest his songs. The cast also includes George S. Irving, Lu Leonard, Buzz Miller, Arnold Soboloff and Gene Varrone; all capable and seasoned veterans who deserved better material.
There is also a supplementary track of "Steady, Steady" in a souped-up version from Michele Lee's album 'A Taste of the Fantastic' that she recorded 4 years later.
A must-own for Broadway fans, but others won't enjoy it all that much.

Refreshing and Surprising!.......2006-11-24
I would strongly recommend this collection to anyone who is seeking a new approach and sound world for these Mozart operas. Ostman opts for brisk tempi and transparent textures, but hardly ever at the expense of characterization or expressivity. The singers respond to the challenge with performances that bristle with excitement and fun. The cast blends with the orchestra like a chamber music ensemble, inspiring the listener to experience the opera as a conversation between the text and the intimations expressed in Mozart's musically and psychologically penetrating orchestration. Occasionally one may miss the lyric line and warmth associated with such great Mozart conductors as Bruno Walter or Karl Bohm; but the brio, virtousity, and brilliant insights of Ostman compensate with different kinds of rewards. Also, there is an intimate atmosphere in these recordings that is most faithful to the ethos and meaning of the libretti themselves. After listening to this period approach, my understanding of Mozart has changed radically, and I continue to relish the challenge that these performances have given to my interpretative sensibilities.
Some of the most thought-provoking recordings ever, combined with some of the most perfect performances I have ever heard........2005-09-14
First of all, I must state first that I was ANXIOUS to write this rave review. Ever since I got these cd's and realized the treause that is to be found in these recordings I just couldn't wait until I'd had the chance to tell everybody else about it... I honestly believe these recordings should be heard by anybody who is interested in this repertoire and music in general, since this are also some of the most perfect pieces of music in the repertoire.
As for the music itself, I am not going to write about. I think it is enough to read my last sentence to realize exactly what I think about it - and it is really just a must. That's composition taken to the highest possible level.
What I do want to write is about the performances.
Arnold Ostman, not the most known figure in the musical world, (not even amongst musicians- I come from Juilliard, and that name is definitely not one everybody knows) has created in the 80's in Mozart the equivalent of what Harnoncourt and Gardiner have done in Bach performance practice, i.e. has totally changed the conecption which was assimilated into everybody's mind regarding notions about how music of that era should sound like.
Trying to create a performance experience which emulates Mozart's period performance practice he changed everything starting from tempos, through ornamentation and of course- the voices themselves.
For us, most people indoctrinated by the post-romantisicm eastablished especially by Herbert von Karajan and the ilks of him, the first initial response will be a shock. The almost imperceptible swift tempos, the small voices etc. are sure to knock over anybody who haven't heard these recordings before. It might create an intial negative response but hang-on there, as the result is so much more gratifying then of hearing a recording of Karajan, Giulini, Furtwangler or any GREAT other conductor from that era- They were obviously incredible musical figures, but in terms of style and total perception of the piece it just doesn't work on the same level, in Mozart of course. (You'd still want to keep your Furtwangler's ninth copy...)
What is so great about Ostman is the freshness of mind with which he walks into every piece. Just like a real iconoclast
it seems as if he has landed from an entire different planet, and is just coming to conduct these pieces and give their debut. I can't give a more sincere and true compliment than that, musically speaking.
The results are the most fresh interpretations up to date of Mozart most important operas which also derive from some of the best vocal performances I have ever heard.
Under Ostman's direction it seems as though all the singers bloom and give their most musical and inspired performances,
holding on under the swiftest tempos in an admirable way. There is no point in pointing out names because it is as in a rule that the performances are just stellar one by one, even though not carrying around sometimes the most famous names.
This is not to say that all of the recordings in this set are equally perfect, and that I agree to all of the interprations and the insights given by Ostman, but you can't disregard the feeling that he knew EXACTLY what he wanted and executed it almost flawlessly. (the one exception might be small part of Cosi, mainly the overture, which was recorded very early in the stages of period instruments playing- therefore not always as perfect as you would have liked to hear it, but the performance as a whole is still the most beautiful Cosi I know.)
As for the packaging itself: The price is a complete steal, (incredible especially if you order it through other sellers, got mine for about 40$). What you DON'T get are the librettos, so you'd HAVE to get them from a different source. Either a different recording you might have, (you just might want one of the standard reference recordings one usually hears about like Giulini's) or you could just buy the librettos through Amazon, would still cost you very little.
Should not be missed by any terms by anybody who cares for music.

Best ever!!.......2004-01-12
Ostman created a stir when he made these recordings in the 1980s. And now it available in a collectors' edition box. I'm so excited. Sumi Jo's Queen of the Night here is even better than her recording for Solti. Ostman's Don Giovanni is the fastest I've ever heard, not to mention the most exciting. This Cosi Fan Tutte is Gramophone's reference Cosi. And this Figaro has many "alternative" arias that other recordings never bother with. Don't worry, the alternative is at the back so you can program it out. In fact, this is the only set of Mozart operas with ALL the alternative arias available. Even Gardiner does not have some of these. So this is a supreme set of importance.
I cannot recommend this too highly. Exciting performances now available in Decca's collectors' edition.

A Showcase of DH's Mozart........2007-02-09
If Don Giovanni wasn't casted by Mozart with sufficient solo arias, this soundtrack made it up by having the same singer singing the part of Leporello as well.
In recent years DH has focused primarily on his native Russian reportoire. In part, this is a true loss to operatic fans.
Here in Don Giovanni, DH demonstrates what a versatile singer he is.
Personally I find his timbre suits the role of Don Giovanni more than Leporello. Even so, in terms of singing, the great solo arias of Leporello were handled very well too in this recording.
If the orchestra is not as first rate as other top-notch ones, and the rest of the cast less well-known, the singers of Zerlina and Commendatore did come up with more than competent performances alongside with DH.
Just for the sake of a truly good baritone singing a truly great opera, this soundtrack is a must to own.
Masterful Don Giovanni.......2002-03-21
I'd say Hvorostovsky makes the best Don Giovanni there is. Despite his temperament fits more to Verdi than Mozart, I really love his exquisite lyric baritone voice in Mozart. I was extremely impressed when I heard him sung the Count at Salzburg back in 95. He is my favorite Mozart interpreter ever since. I don't think anybody else could quite pull off "La ci darem" and "Serenade" so seductively as Hvorostovsky does. His "Champagne aria" is at most perfect tempo, and even Lepollero's "Catalogo aria" sounds so sensuous. This is the only recording of his Mozart. I should be thankful to have this at all since he sung both Giovanni and Leporello. What a clever idea!
The film version of "Lepollero's Revenge is quite a treat.
Dmitri's portrayal of both Don Giovanni and Lepollero is absolutely charming. He showed his comical skills so well.
He'll sing Don Giovanni at the Met next season and The Marriage of Figaro at Paris, so he keeps the balance in between various Verdi productions.
what a thrill !.......2001-12-16
To hear my favorite singer perform my favorite opera is a treat indeed, and through the the magic of modern technology, we get to hear him do duets with himself, as both the Don, and Leporello. This dual casting, as the booklet says about this hour long film, "...alludes to the notion that the Don and his servant are alter-egos, opposite sides of the the same person".
One of the reasons I like this CD is that I get to hear all the parts of this opera (including the overture) that delight me, all on one disc...also the recitativos, which are sometimes the most delectable of all...and Hvorostovsky does them so well, with his flawless Italian.
I also love the trio "Al taci, ingiusto core", and the sestetto "Sola, sola in buio loco". Of the lovely melodic arias, the "La ci darem la mano" duet, and the beautiful Serenata are wonderful, and perfectly suited for his rich baritone.
In the cast there's Dominique Labelle (Donna Anna), Gary Relyea (Commendatore), Liesel Fedkenheuer (Donna Elvira), Michael Colvin (Ottavio), Krisztina Szabo (Zerlina), and Alain Coulombe (Masetto), and though they may not be of Hvorostovsky's stature (few singers are !), they do an excellent job of backing him here. I especially like Relyea, and he gets to sing in what for me is one of the greatest scenes in all opera, the final trio, starting with the Commendatore's "Don Giovanni, a cenar teco"...now to hope this film becomes available on video !

Customer Reviews:
Appears to deliver what it offers--but it is not opera!.......2007-02-11
I stumbled on this set in the Amazon listings quite by accident. I feel obliged to make it clear that I do not own the set, nor have I heard anything from this particular publication. I certainly am familiar with many of the performances included in the set, and I am willing (based on the previous review) to assume that they have been recorded on the eight disks of the set with an acceptable--if not necessarily leading edge--level of competence.
Judging from the contents listed on this review site, this is the underlying structure of the "People's Guide."
--Tracks 1-15 (presumably one disk): arias from the Big-Five Mozart operas.
--Tracks 16-34: arias from bel canto operas.
--Tracks 35-46: arias from middle-period Verdi operas.
--Tracks 47-64: arias and one chorus from Puccini.
--Tracks 65-87: miscellaneous loose ends. (I absolutely guarantee you that Number 71, "Parigi, o cara," is not, repeat not from "La battaglia di Legnano" but from an obscure little piece by Verdi called "La Traviata.")
--Tracks 76-88: arias [sort of] and choruses from Wagner operas (but not from "The Ring.")
--Tracks 89-99: well-known overtures and preludes to operas.
Right off, it can be seen that "The People's Guide 1" begins at the end of the 18th Century and ends early in the 20th. It entirely ignores the better part of two centuries of operatic development before Mozart and composers of the stature of Monteverdi, Handel and Gluck, not to mention Salieri. A couple of French operas sneak in the back door in Italian versions and only Carmen appears in the correct language. German operas are ignored except those written by Mozart and Wagner. Russian operas are entirely shut out. The 20th Century appears only in the works of Puccini, so the likes of Richard Strauss, Berg and Britten are cast into the outer darkness.
On the whole, though, the selection isn't bad. If you really want about nine hours of bleeding hunks from what most people define as the standard operatic repertory, you could do worse than this set. The performances seem to range from the early 1950s to the early 1970s. There are many famous names among the singers and conductors.
But it is not opera. Operas are not just a string of songs and choruses that follow along after an overture. An opera is--or should be--a dramatic whole. Opera was consciously invented at about the beginning of the 17th Century to combine drama, music, dance, costume and set design into a unified whole and display them on stage. Often the best parts of operas are utilitarian but brilliant passages that will never make their way into highlights disks such as these.
This set is hardly expensive at the prices being quoted as I write this. Nevertheless, I advise you to look through the offerings of complete performances. Many of the older ones offer unbelievably good singers in superb performances at low price. That's a better deal than you'll get here.
A chance to enjoy opera........2001-08-12
Mozart, Wagner, Rossini . . . need I say more? Regardless of whether or not you are an avid listener of opera, this cd is a must have. Even if you never had the valuable opportunity to attend an opera, there is no reason why you should not add this cd to your music collection. Not only are some of the world's most beloved operas included (such as the Barber of Seville and Carmen), but thanks to technology, this cd provides a great sound that pretty soon you'll believe that you are in an actually opera house. The professional orchestras that play in this cd help to bring forth much emotion. Don't miss out on this opportunity to own a collection of opera pieces at a reasonable price.
