Centre Stage
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
"Can you feel the lo-o-o-o-ve tonight?" Michael Ball asks in the song of the same name. One thing's for sure: We can definitely feel the full impact of his vibrato. And maybe that's what makes him one of Britain's most popular musical-theater singers. Packed with ballads, Centre Stage features songs pulled mostly from contemporary blockbusters such as Aida, Les Miserables, Blood Brothers, and Riverdance. Ball isn't the best Sondheim interpreter, but his relatively low-key take on ABBA's "The Winner Takes It All" is surprisingly effective. Like Linda Eder and Sarah Brightman, he's a crossover artist, equally at ease on the West End and Broadway and in Las Vegas. Rent's "Seasons of Love" is the best example of this strategy. The synth-heavy arrangements get close to the cheese zone at times, but Ball's power pipes mostly overcome them. The album's centerpiece is the delirious title song from Phantom of the Opera, a duet with Lesley Garrett. It comes across like old-school Queen trying its damnedest to write a Broadway hit. It's so over the top, so flamboyantly bombastic, that only a terminal snob wouldn't love it. Or at least crack a smile. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

I was lucky enough to be given the Centre Stage CD as a gift. Thank you to Scott for as wonderful and thoughtful gift. Michael is just fabulous and I particularily love his redition of Bring Him Home....one of my favourites. Michael does belong Centre Stage.
micheal ball.......2006-11-05
He's one of the greatest singers ever.
Not all of his songs are good choices for him.
Micheal Ball's best collection of show tunes to date.......2004-02-14
Michael Ball created the role of Alex Dillingham in Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Aspects of Love," which meant he was the first to record "Love Changes Everything." As a singer-actor Ball appeared in West End productions of "Les Miserables" and "Phantom of the Opera," but has predominantly become a recording artist and concert performing. After his 1998 album "Musicals" and came out with "Centre Stage" in 2001, which offers another exploration of the songs of Broadway. This album is the better of the two and that might owe as much to the song selection as it does to the additional three years of experience singing such songs.
There is a trio of Lloyd Webber songs, with a duet of "Phantom of the Opera" with Lesley Garrett setting up "The Music of the Night," just as it does in the show, and a surprisingly sedate version of "Tell Me on a Sunday." Stephen Sondheim pops up twice with "Not While I'm Around" and "Send in the Clowns." Actually there is quite a bit of pop on the album which opens with a pair of tracks from Elton John-Tim Rice shows and has songs by ABBA and the Bee Gees that made it to Broadway efforts based on their work. But the songs that really stand out on this album tend to be from the next generation of Broadway song writers, "The Boy From Nowhere" from "Matador," "Seasons of Love" from "Rent," and "Tell Me It's Not True" from "Blood Brothers." If you get the feeling that Ball sings more as himself and not as the characters and that his singing reflects a more British sensibility than you are accustomed to hearing in American musical theater, I would not disagree. But taken on those terms this is a solid collection of show tunes.
Not another over the top CD.......2004-01-24
I am really bothered by the way Michael Ball delivered the songs in this CD. He is so over-acting, no subtlety whatsover. It sounded amateurish and over-done. I hope he learns how to town down in the future. His take on "The Winner Takes it All" is so softy in approach. Please, no more over the top performace. Only Barbra Streisand can pull that one!!!!
Fantastic!.......2003-10-06
After listening to Michael Ball on the Complete Symphonic Recording of Les Miserables and seeing him again on the Miz DVD, I must say I was very impressed by this CD. He has a very sultry voice that is one that both soothes and gets the blood pumping. I love "Boy From Nowhere", "Winner Takes It All" and of course the two Phantom of the Opera selections. His vocals are really something else and for a starter Michael Ball CD, this would be the one to buy.

THE VERY, VERY BEST.......2005-04-28
Anthony Warlow is one of the most talented male singers in the world today. The passion and feeling he lends to everything he sings make each of his songs a masterpiece. THIS MAN IS THE EPITOME OF TALENT!
Nothing Better!.......2005-02-20
There isn't a single Male Vocalist out there as AMAZING and BREATHTAKING as Mr. Anthony Warlow! This album shows the wide range of the tones, and characters his voice can stretch to. His operatic quality while singing "Music of the Night" blows all other recorded Phantoms out of the water! "Somewhere" is so beautiful, and the girl singing with him is wonderful and they compliment each other perfectly. "You're Nothing Without Me" will make you laugh, and his is just perfectly suited to sing it. All the other tracks are equally perfect and will capture your heart. I am definitely going to buy all his other albums after this one! I strongly recommend the Concept Cast album of "Jekyll and Hyde" with him on it. You haven't heard perfection till you hear Anthony Warlow sing "I Need to Know".
One of the best voices.......2004-07-15
Regardless of the arrangement or instrumentation of the songs, the interpretation of Anthony Warlow delivers. I first heard his voice in a complication CD, the best of Act I. This is my second CD of his. I like best his simple, yet elegant, interpretaton of Johanna, I Am What I Am, and the Colors of my life. His voice is very refreshing. I really do not tire of listening to this CD again and again. His background is theater but his interpretation is not over-dramatic.
Fabulous! What a range of emotions and vocal technique!.......2001-11-08
The true power of this CD lies not only in the individual tracks, but in the entire collection and its range of emotions, styles, and techniques. Anthony Warlow demonstrates his immense talents through a wide variety of vocal techniques that should be appreciated from start to finish, again and again. His rendition of "Anthem" from Chess is the absolute best I have ever heard. This CD has not left my CD player since I bought it!
One of Warlow's Best.......2001-05-04
Anthony Warlow is Australia's most talented and powerful musical theatre/opera singer. His voice is shown off most exceptionally in this CD. The first track Music of the Night gets the CD off to a very fitting start. This track truly shows why he was Australia's Phantom in 1991. His rendition of Anthem from Chess is the best around. It is incredibly powerful and emotional. His version of Bring Him Home is amazing. In my opinion he sings it better than any of the people that have been Jean Valjean. Lastly both Soliloquy and The Impossible Dream shows off Warlow's ability to adopt a great character voice all the while maintaining an amazing quality of singing. This is one of Warlow's better CDs and is highly recommended as it has so many great songs sung by possibly one of the world's greatest male vocalists.
