Coffee House

Following the example of many contemporary Broadway singers, Susan Egan (Beauty and the Beast, Triumph of Love) offers a mix of pop songs and show tunes on this solo recording. On the musical-theater side, Egan bravely unearths obscure nuggets (Jerry Herman's "Where in the World Is My Prince," Alan Menken and David Zippel's "I Can't Believe My Heart," from the movie Hercules) and gives them a soothing, laidback reading. Even her natural charm, however, can't alleviate the sugary whimsy of Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich's "Taylor, the Latte Boy" (incomprehensibly, a favorite on the New York cabaret circuit). On the pop side, the clear-voiced Egan offers nice adult-contemporary versions of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" and Cat Stevens's "Oh Very Young." But her warm, no-nonsense style isn't a good fit for Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights," an outsize, demented song that requires a playful sense of drama that Egan lacks. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Ask anyone who's attended one and they'll tell you: there's nothing quite as colorful--and emotionally melodramatic--as a Greek wedding. Based on Winnipeg actress-comedian Nia Vardalos's one-woman show and brought to the screen by Rita Wilson and husband Tom Hanks, the film tells (with some parallels to Moonstruck) the story of a thirtysomething Greek spinster for whom falling in love with a "Xeno" (non-Greek) is surely the easiest part of a wedding that more than lives up to its billing. The film's soundtrack perfectly captures those swirling clouds of ethnic and romantic tension. Its first half largely sets up the rich cultural atmosphere with a lively sampling of traditional Greek folk music (featuring selections by Alexandros Xenofontos, John Tsifliklis, Eman, Nick Kutsukos, Daghan Baydur, and Richard Thomas), while the score proper from Alexander Janko (with help from Chris Wilson) slyly segues from similar fare ("Moose Caca," "Yasoo," "Yiayia") to more traditional orchestral film music. That sometimes electro-pastoral, compelling music has parallels with Rachel Portman's and offers the collection a sense of emotional completion. --Jerry McCulley

Great disappointment on amazon's shipping method.......2007-07-07
I had ordered this particular CD. However, After the second tried. i am yet to receive the CD. And i was really hoping the second CD could appear in my doorstep on the expected arrival date or 1 week later.
To be honest, This is the first time i didn't manage to receive my good from E-commerce Portal. I totally didnt expect this happen from reputable Amazon.
Nonetheless. I must admit your friendly customer service, they are always willing to assist me to reprocess or the refund the marchant.

The Greek Music-.......2006-02-10
The cd is so phenomenal. The music is so traditional and it show so much of the greek culture. The bouzoki that they use which is a greek instrument was such a musical sound. In my school we are doing a GREEK PRESENTAION and we are going to use this music. We will dance to it and are going to be a success. So overall this is a superlative cd after all!!!!!!!!!!

The Greek Music is Great.......2003-05-05
I loved the strong rhythms and colorful harmonies of the traditional Greek numbers. The film score is lyrical but bland. This truly is a combination of "apples and oranges!"
Amazingly Relaxing CD!.......2003-03-08
This is a great instrumental CD! Not only great greek music that you can get up and dance to, but also the soft contemporary songs that you can just relax with. I enjoy it very much!

The Canadian legend.......2004-10-26
I can't fully explain what Stan Rogers means to me, nor can I adequately describe how powerful this icon's music is to me, and to Canada. The only way to appreciate this man is to listen to him, and it is then that your soul will be opened to a force you will never forget. This disc, which was released by his wife, is probably the weakest of all his material, but it's a gem nevertheless. Not everybody wanted this released, but I have to admit I'm happy I could get one more release from him. Some of the production is raw, but it's still very good, and some of this material ranks up there with his best. I remember sitting in his parents living room a few years ago, and they talked about their boy with such pride that it was something I'll never forget. I never met Stan, but that was as close as I could ever hope to under the circumstances. I was looking for some of his material, and through someone I knew, I was given their number. These wonderful folks invited me over, and it was like sitting with in front of a warm fire. Some of the nicest folks you could hope to meet, and it's easy to see where Stan, and Garnet got their values and authenticity. There are many great Canadian music legends, but nobody comes close to Stan Rrogers.
halifax gold.......2003-08-30
Few will dispute the fact that in life and death, Rogers' importance in breaking the boundaries of the Maritime music industry are immeasurable. This 20 track collection of previously unreleased demos, live recordings and radio broadcasts proves why. Songs from the lighter side of life (Acadian Saturday Night, The Woodbridge Dog Disaster, It All Fades Away) were dispensed sparingly between Rogers' tales of hard-lives lived, of fates unwelcome and bitter realization epitomized the folk predilection for dark morality plays. But his appeal remains the way in which he brought a decidely Maritime approach to the form. A 1973 recording of Guysborough Train, created as an extended-play 45 for CBC radio distribution, rings with haunting pathos and illustrates precisely Rogers' emotive songwriting style. More so than simply narrating his tales, Rogers strong and spirited vocal style made him the weatherman in the middle of the storm. It was this uncanny prowess that brought such palpability to songs like Take It From Day to Day (written in 1980 for a CBC dramatization of the story of the St. Roch expedition), Down the Road and Billy Green. Don't sweat the fact Barrett's Privateers is a no show; these tracks are enough gold treasure to last a life time.
From Coffehouse to Concert Hall ( Live).......2000-10-22
I first heard Stan Rogers singing "Barretts Privateers"on Public Radio. I stopped the car and listened to Stan and his powerful group deliver this complex and engaging story. I was hooked from that very first moment. I contacted the station got the title and looked up Stan on Amazon. Stan is now part of my daily musical fix.
The stories he delivers are spellbinding. His wording, phraseology, and muical composition are compelling and carries the listener to the ports of Halifax, on to the bow spirit of the working boats he sings about,to the towns and burroughs that he has travelled and to the people who have shared his life .His takes the listener to the shores from where he launches his magical journeys.
His reports of the people he has met are examples of treasured wordsmithing and his musical genius.
Alas, When I found out of the untimely death of Stan Rogers in a airplane fire, it left me with no other way of getting to know this artist than by collecting the other published works and book about Stans life.
Listening to this album is like finding buried treasure..........2000-03-07
In the liner notes of "From Coffeehouse to Concert Hall", Ariel Rogers writes that this will be the last album of her late husband's unreleased material. If that proves to be true (and one hopes it does not), this is a fitting final tribute to a remarkably talented musician who left us all too soon. With twenty songs running more than 70 minutes, From Coffeehouse To Concert Hall offers listeners a wide variety of tunes -- not all his own -- performed by Stan Rogers. The earliest of these, "Guysborough Train", was recorded in a studio in 1973, complete with orchestration. The last song on the album, the haunting and heartbreaking "Down The Road", was recorded live in California, just five days before the singer's June 1983 death in an airliner fire. In between those two are eighteen gems (none of which has been recorded on any other Stan Rogers album) running the gamut from country tunes to sea shanties, that will make you laugh, cry, sing along, and marvel at Rogers' ability to tell stories through his music. The recording quality of the songs does vary, for while some of them are outtakes from album sessions, others were recorded in less-than-ideal circumstances, and Ariel Rogers and Paul Mills did a commendable job producing this album. (One of the most affecting songs on the album, "Your Laker's Back In Town", was recorded by Stan, accompanying himself on his guitar, on an ordinary cassette recorder.) For longtime Stan Rogers fans, this album is a must-have, and for those who are relatively new to his music, "From Coffeehouse To Concert Hall" provides a excellent look at the stunning talent of Stan Rogers.
Listening to this album is like finding buried treasure...........2000-03-04
Stan Rogers was taken from us far too soon, in a tragic fire aboard an airliner in June of 1983. An immensely talented singer/songwriter, with a wonderful baritone voice and the ability to tell stories with his lyrics, he was well-known in Canada, and becoming increasingly popular in the United States. At the time of his death, four albums -- Fogarty's Cove, Turnaround, Between The Breaks - Live!, and Northwest Passage -- had been released, and two more had been recorded. Those albums -- For The Family and From Fresh Water -- were released over the next two years. Like many other singers, Stan Rogers had recorded a large number of tunes that never made it to an album, and a demand for that music has always been strong. The live album, Home In Halifax, was released in 1993, and now we have what Ariel Rogers, Stan's widow, calls "the last release of Stan's unpublished music." If that is true, From Coffee House To Concert Hall is a fitting tribute to this remarkable artist. The album is more than 70 minutes long, and its 20 songs have never appeared on any of Stan Rogers' other albums. Not all of these songs were recorded in a studio; some were recorded at live concerts or other venues, and one of the most touching songs on the album, "Your Laker's Back In Town", was recorded by Stan, accompanying himself on his guitar, on a simple audio cassette. Ariel Rogers and Paul Mills, who produced this album, did a remarkable job of getting quality sounds from what were in some cases very poor source material. The songs encompass a wide variety of musical styles, and trace Stan's evolution as an artist. The earliest of them, "Guysborough Train", was recorded in 1973, and the last song on the album, the haunting and heart-breaking "Down The Road", was recorded live just five days before Stan's death. In between those two are eighteen gems that will make you laugh, cry, smile, and sing along. Whether you are a longtime Stan Rogers fan, or discovering his music for the first time, From Coffee House To Concert Hall is a delight not to be missed!

Coffee House cd.......2007-01-12
Of The 2 albums I have just purchased by Susan Egan, this is the best. One can sit down and relax with this beautiful music. I hope she does more of this type of album.
There's something about Susan Egan's voice that just keeps you listeneing!.......2006-11-23
Something about her voice, it's like the perfect combonation of broadway/cabaret style, with a modern, sassy sound! I think part if it is her cool american accent!
Love Susan Egan, love coffee house!
Wonderful!.......2006-05-12
After reading a few reviews on this site, I have come to the conclusion that this is one of the albums where it's you love it or you hate it with no intermediate. It's a fairly simple concept. If you like different renditions of show tunes and pop songs, then go for this, it's beautifully done, Susan's voice is warm and dynamic, and she puts herself into these songs. If you don't like people doing covers, well then, I'd still say listen to some samples because she's that good.
There are many strong pieces in this album, her renditions of "Oh Very Young", "Wurthering Heights" (this song was much more full bodied and appealing than Kate Bush), "Roses", and "Oh How I Loved You" are particularly heart rending.
Addictive.......2005-10-01
This CD is addictive: I cannot take it out of my CD player. I purchased the album because I love Susan's voice, and I knew none of the songs beyond "Both Sides Now." The performances are wonderful, and I think Christopher McGovern's arrangements compliment her quite well and add a lot of beauty on their own. As for the songs I didn't know, I cannot get 'Oh, How I Loved You" out of my head.
True talent, unique singer.......2005-08-01
Susan Egan is an amazing performer, very true to her singing. Wether it's Broadway or her own cd's, she always sings with her heart and soul, perfectly capturing all the emotions in her own distinctive style.
All the songs on "Coffee House" were chosen by Susan herself - the ones she loved, could relate to and honestly wanted to sing. And it really shows, as we can hear a great joy and emotional engagement in Susan's singing - nothing is forced or over the top. She hits every note perfectly and knows how to make the most of her impressively wide vocal range. Song choices really reflect Susan's endearing personality - romantic, passionate, yet hilarious with a great sense of humor. There's no chance to get bored with her music and this album is a perfect choice for any occasion.
Susan is a well-loved and known musical stage performer these days, and her numerous Broadway/Tv/Movie credits just prove her wonderful talent and versatility. If you're tired of plastic pop and pop-idols being produced in masses, just try "Coffee House" and enjoy the natural charm of Susan's beautiful voice singing to the top-notch arrangements. Definitely a must-have!

Escape.......2006-07-19
French pop flavor creates sweet silky intrigue in the Latitudes remix. Cerrone's Music of Life is a disco blast from the past with subtle energy. Waves and Sun has Caribbean appeal. Femi Kuti has tribal beats that open into echoes begging you to escape from urban playgrounds. Kojak provides a jazzy interlude with lyrics. The idea of the entire album seems to be escape and by the time you get to the Love Theme, you imagine this was what you expected the album would be about from the start. The last two tracks are the highlight of the album. Desert is dreamy and emotive and worth the wait.

Music to cure what ails you........1999-08-25
I have had the pleasure of seeing these guys several times, and each show brings something new to their music. While they themselves may not be big names in the folk world, they deserve to be. This album is worthy of being in anyones folk collection. The first song on the album "Gather the Family" is sung in the fashion of a shape note hymn and is just very powerful and beautiful. It also sets the tone for the rest of the disc. In addition to being fine singers, songwriters and musicians, Michael and David are also able interpreters of other peoples music. This is no where more evident than in their recording of John Gorkas previously unreleased "Faded Blue and Gold." Take my advice. Buy the disc. Listen to the first track, listen to the last track, and then listen to everything in between and I think that you will agree with me.
