Sitting in the balcony at the final preview of this 1964 Jerry Herman show, still very much in school and long before my career as a critic began, I knew somehow that I was witnessing theatrical history. Even as that callow youth, I was certain that Carol Channing had been born to play the role of Dolly Gallagher Levi, the meddling turn-of-the century New York widow who had been adapted from Thornton Wilder's straight play The Matchmaker. Channing has proved me right by playing the role ever since, of course, miraculously only improving with age. Beyond Dolly herself, however, the musical emitted a synergistic exuberance (at least five years before we used the word "synergy"). The supporting cast, including David Burns, Eileen Brennan, and Charles Nelson Reilly, were terrific. Herman's tunes and lyrics were sublimely crafted both to create their characters and stand alone. (The title song took on a life of its own.) The show's designers, librettist Michael Stewart and director Gower Champion, combined to transport the audience to 60 years earlier in little old New York. This wasn't all just my opinion: Hello, Dolly! won a record 10 Tonys. The original cast recording can still take you to that other time and place, even if you didn't see the original show. But, at the risk of offending my inner adolescent, the 1994 revival, naturally starring Channing, was even better--both on stage and on disc. --Robert Windeler

DOLLY WILL NEVER GO AWAY.......2007-05-17

Great re-mastering of original BWay cast album with wonderful other Dollys, particularly Pearl Baily who makesHello, Dolly! (1964 Original Broadway Cast) (Deluxe Edition) the title tune her own. It is still a great score and a delight to own.

The excitement is there, but............2007-01-24

Hello Dolly is one of my favorite shows. When you listen to the cast album, you really do--as others have said--feel the excitement of being there on opening night when Broadway history was being made. The wonderful RCA cast album has been a best seller for 43 years. But while I do feel it is necessary for any musical fan to have this cast recording in their collection, this is not personally my "Dolly" album of choice. I have three of the 5 major DOLLY recordings in my collection; this Original Cast, the Barbra Streisand movie soundtrack, and the Mary Martin London cast on LP (the others I do not have are the Pearl Bailey cast album and the Carol Channing revival). My preferred recording is a tie between the movie soundtrack and the Mary Martin album, with this one trailing (not far) behind. As far as the supporting cast are concerned, the original cast wins hand down. But HELLO DOLLY is really about the star, and in my opinion, Carol Channing can't sing...err, croak...her way out of a cardboard box. I realize that that is Channing's trademark, but it just doesn't work for me. As I said, this album is required equipment in any serious musical lover's collection, but I think that I too will "stick with Streisand." And for God's sake, I wish RCA would get off their rump and get the Mary Martin cast album out on CD, and reissue the Pearl Bailey cast album too while they're at it!

Goodbye, Dolly!.......2005-10-30

This Deluxe Edition of the orginal "Hello, Dolly!" has three distinct problems.

For starters, this is not the classic musical that afficianados would have you believe, nor is it Jerry Herman at his best (that honor goes to "Mame"). Rather, this is a fair to middling score with three socko numbers (title tune not included), three rather fine songs (title song included) and the rest either average or inadequate. "Put On Your Sunday Clothes" and "Before the Parade Passes By" are two of the most galvanizing songs ever written for the Broadway stage and no singer can detract from their euphoric energy (though Carol Channing tries -- more on that later). "So Long, Dearie", though slower in tempo than Barbra Streisand's definitve rendition, is a showstopping character song that's both clever and compelling. These three numbers are what gives "Dolly" it's class and they are three of the best things Herman ever wrote. Then we have "Dancing", "Elegance" and (gulp!) the by now overly familiar title song, each an accomplished tune that propels the plot with, well, elegance. The song "Hello, Dolly!" may now annoy as a Broadway warhorse, but it was as fresh as daffodils when it first premiered. The rest of the score, sadly, isn't up to these standards. "It Takes a Woman" and "It Only Takes a Moment" are indistinguished at best, and "Ribbons Down My Back" is downright annoying. Worse still, "I Put My Hand In" is a lackluster opener that pales in comparison to "Just Leave Everything to Me", its replacement in the movie and a bonifide Jerry Herman rouser. And "Motherhood" sounds like exactly what it was, a stage wait for the scenery to move in. Totally expendable.

The second problem here is that this may be the worst sung original cast recording in Broadway history. Charles Neslon Reilly's wobbly tenor struggles to maintain pitch, Eileen Brennan's stilted soprano sounds more like light operetta than musical comedy, and David Burns makes his movie counterpart, Walter Matthau, sound like Mario Lanza in comparision. Then there is Dolly, the incomprehensibly overrated Carol Channing. From her first froggy notes in "I Put My Hand In" you know it's going to be rough sledding and, sure enough, she croaks and screeches her way through one song after another, rendering most of what she sings unlistenable. Channing's voice is thin, harsh and completely unequalized throughout its range and she effectively saps all of the charm out of "...Sunday Clothes" and "Parade". By the time the recording has ended, you want to banish this CD to a deserted island. But wait, there's more! An almost unrecognizable Mary Martin starts the "extras" on this disc with a shock. Some of her last recordings, these "Dolly" numbers unfortunately display how Martin's once lovely instrument had deepened and thickened over the years. A full throttle but somewhat tremulous Ethel Merman fairs little better on some poorly recorded songs added to the show when she took over. These two giants actually make the songs Pearl Bailey does on this disc seem all the more astonishing. While arguably not as talented as Martin or Merman (although, in reconsidering this recording and her career, I think I'm entirely wrong in that observation), Bailey hits a home run on each of her renditions and her recording of the title song is absolutely definitive. Someone should quickly get the cast recording of her "Dolly" back in circulation. "She" and "we" deserve it.

The final problen here is a lengthy recent interview with Ms. Channing that has to be heard to be believed. Does she actually think we're buying the idea that she was doing high kicks in the studio while recording her songs? Please! She barely catches her breath between phrases. And her comparing her premonition that the show would be a hit to a passage in the bible is as laughable as it is sacriligious. Yes, she may have done the show over 5000 times, but she lucked into a classic without earning her own classic status. No wonder all she could do was repeat herself for the rest of her career. Stick with Streisand.

And I guess from the reviews of THIS review, disliking Channing is sacriligous. I better watch my back.

Toxically Corny!!!!.......2005-01-22

A lot of my friends wonder why I violently detest Broadway Musicals so much. Well, this particular recording is at least one reason why. Exposed to this piece of Toxic Schlock at a very young age (about 4 I reckon), and ever since, for me it has epitomized EVERYTHING I detest about musicals, the thin corny plots, even cornier songs, people breaking out into song at the most ridiculous times and so much glitz that my system nearly went into toxic shock. The worst part of it all, CAROL CHANNING!!!! This woman CANNOT SING TO SAVE HER LIFE, PERIOD!!!

I've even asked people who DO like B'way what is the deal with her? I hear it's that she has charisma. OK, since when does charisma equal talent (I honestly believe they are NOT the same thing).

And I have even tried to listen to other musicals over the years, and I just CANNOT get the appeal of it on ANY level! I guess this is well-done as these things go (there is work involved), but I just CANNOT understand what the fuss is all about.

Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Although the film version of HELLO DOLLY proved to be a creative misstep, the soundtrack album features Miss Barbra Streisand in top vocal form. While she now readily admits to being hopelessly-miscast as the matchmaking Dolly Gallagher Levi, her performance still carries the film (and it's soundtrack). It's great to have Barbra "back where she belongs", singing these classic numbers.

HELLO DOLLY opened on Broadway in 1964 starring Carol Channing (ironically in the same season, Barbra opened in "Funny Girl"). Reviews were ecstatic, and DOLLY went on to run for several years, including a special all-black cast headed by Pearl Bailey and Cab Calloway. In 1969, the film version was released, and given the huge success of the stage production, Twentieth Century-Fox expected the same sort of response from movie audiences. With Barbra Streisand, the most popular, talked-about musical star of the period; and the rousing melodies of Jerry Herman, how did it fail? The miscasting of Streisand was the main problem (people just could not buy her as a middle-aged widow), but the zero chemistry between Streisand and Walter Matthau, playing Dolly's curmudgeonly love interest Horace Vandergelder, was also a key factor (and clearly there was no love lost between the pair). The sad truth was that movie musicals were beginning to fall out of fashion with moviegoers.

Happily, the soundtrack album glitters with Jerry Herman's rousing score, filled to the brim with his trademark brand of showtune magic. Barbra gets things off to a rattling start in "Just Leave Everything to Me" (a brand-new song that replaces "I Put My Hand In" from the stage score), and later belts the showstopper "Put on Your Sunday Clothes". She also gets another brand-new song, "Love is Only Love" (a delicate, bittersweet ballad about romance the second time around, originally intended for the stage score of "Mame"). Dolly's tunestack also features the hilarious 11 o'clocker "So Long Dearie" and the reaffirming "Before the Parade Passes By"; not to mention the iconic Title Song, which Streisand shares with a cameo appearance from Louis Armstrong.

A very young Michael Crawford plays the nervous counter clerk Cornelius Hackl; ably-partnered by the glowing (albeit dubbed) Mrs Molloy of Marianne McAndrew. Their duet of "It Only Takes a Moment" is sheer bliss. Danny Lockin (reprising his Broadway role of Barnaby Tucker) and E.J. Peaker as the flirty Minnie Faye provide the comical younger romantic couple.

The original master tapes have a lush and warm tone to them; and the remastering is excellent. For fans of Barbra, this soundtrack album captures her at the very apex of her superstardom, performing a role that she may not have been entirely-suitable for, but nevertheless offering a capable and fun-loving performance.

WE GET CHEATED ON THIS RELEASE AS THEY LEAVE OUT ALL THE EXTRA MUSIC THATS SO DELICIOUS (LIKE THE OVERTURE, LEAD INS, DANCING MUSCIC, ETC.) THE ONLY PARTS WORTHWHILE ALL BELONG TO BABS (& LOUIS ARMSTRONG) WHO SINGS THE HELL OUT OF THE SCORE. KEEP YOUR FINGER ON THE SKIP BUTTON SO THE REST OF THE UNBEARABLE PERFORMANCES DON'T HAVE TO BE HEARD AND YOU CAN GET RIGHT TO BABS IN ALL HER GLORY AND AT FULL THROTTLE!!!

CAN SOMEONE TELL THE POWERS THAT BE, TO RE-RELEASE THIS ABLUM WITH THE FULL SCORE (EVEN IF IT HAS TO BE A 2 DISC SET).

What a great album!.......2006-06-26

I first saw "Hello Dolly" when it was shown on CBS in the early 1970s,and I have loved both the movie and the album ever since.
I owned the original 20th Century-Fox Records album for years,
and was delighted to see it finally released on CD.This is still
one of the best 1960s soundtrack albums!The score is beautifully
performed by the Twentieth Century-Fox Studio Orchestra,under the superb direction of Lennie Hayton,Lionel Newman,and their
colleagues(They won a much deserved Oscar for it).Michael
Crawford,Marianne McAndrew,Danny Lockin,and E.J.Peaker all sing well.Even Walter Matthau does an acceptable job.And this is
Barbra Streisand at her peak!Just listen to her let it rip in
"Before The Parade Passes By" and the title song,and you'll know what I mean!Babs simply performs magnificently here!And Jerry Herman has never had it so good!
So,you may be wondering,is there anything wrong with this CD?Yes,
there is.Like Phillips's "Doctor Dolittle" reissue,this is the

Amazing.......2007-06-01

I have'nt heard the Original Original (from 1964). I can only assume this is a case of The Emperors New clothes and no one had the courage to kill this recording at birth. Whoever had the idea that asking Carol Channing to revisit the part of Dolly Levi was worthwhile deserves to be drummed out of the Entertainment Industry. In case there is any confusion this recording is dire. It sounds like Walter Mattau after a very heavy night on the tiles (I have no reason to assume Walter M ever had a heavy night on the tiles). The only reason to buy this is to give confidence to anyone who fancies trying musical theatre and thinks their voice is not up to scratch. If this can reach Broadway there is hope for anyone. I am only familiar with a few recordings of Dolly but would suggest that so far Barbra Striesand in the movie is the best bet if its music you enjoy.

Variation on Original Cast Album w/ Plus & Minus.......2006-07-01

The 1994 Farewell Tour revival album of Dolly is smart, snappy & of interest to fans, tho I doubt it replaces the original cast album for warmth & charm. Channing is amazing but not in good voice (if you doubt she ever had a good voice listen to her on the legendary Jazz Baby CD). The revival version of Ribbons Down My Back by Florence Lacey sets a new standard for that number. At times the chorus energy seems a bit forced rather than hitting the right tone for this tuneful highly agreeable musical adaptation of The Matchmaker. This version should not replace the original, but make a good addition to anyone's collection of major Broadway musicals.

NOW FOR THE BAD NEWS-WHETHER YOU LIKE HER OR NOT THE CHARM ABOUT CAROL CHANNING IS HER VOICE WHICH SOUNDS LIKE A STRANGULATED DUCK-ON THIS RECORDING AND WELL INTO HER SEVENTIES SHE SOUNDS MORE LIKE A COMATOSE DUCK. HELLO DOLLY! is still one of musical theatre's crowning-glories. The original 1964 production catapulted Carol Channing into the annals of Broadway folklore and the role became her signature performance.

In 1994, Carol Channing and DOLLY! came back to Broadway for a limited-run revival. Channing has lost few steps since originating the role and turns in a fabulous performance. Like a fine wine, her performance and portrayal of Dolly grew richer and more honed.

Channing was surrounded by a strong cast including Florence Lacey as Irene Molloy, Jay Garner as Horace Vandergelder, Michael DeVries as Cornelius Hackl, Cory English as Barnaby Tucker and Lori Ann Mahl as Minnie Fay.

Florence Lacey sings a deeply-affecting "Ribbons Down My Back", DeVries and English are wonderful with "Dancing" and Jay Garner is the perfect stuffy foil to Channing's manic and free-wheeling matchmaker.

There are many differences to the original 1964 cast album, including the addition of a new, longer Overture, and the extended sequence to "Dancing". Sound quality is also very impressive, though the original cast album's sound quality is still as fresh as paint.

Get this superb CD today (or buy both albums if you have yet to discover the joys of this landmark Broadway show).

Wonderful recording of the beloved score.......2003-07-11

Jerry Herman's score for "Hello, Dolly!" has its lesser points: a few underwhelming songs like "It Takes a Woman," "It Only Takes a Moment" and "Motherhood" and an undeniably hokey title song. However, it also has several genuine showstoppers, including "Put On Your Sunday Clothes" and "Before the Parade Passes By," the beautiful "Ribbons Down My Back" and a couple of irresistable charm songs, "Elegance" and "So Long Dearie." And even that title song, hokey as it is, is also undeniably one of the greatest numbers Broadway has ever produced in terms of sheer galvanizing energy - audiences have been giving it standing ovations for just about 40 years.

This recording must surely be one of the best, if not possibly *the* best, recording of the score out there, because the entire cast gives such a spirited (and, in my opinion, thoroughly professional) performance that the weak songs sound great and the great ones sound greater still. Carol Channing's voice takes an awful lot of getting used to, but her take on Dolly is so undeniably original and, after a while, so thoroughly enjoyable that you wonder how anyone can *not* say she *is* Dolly Levi. And having seen her in the movie "Thoroughly Modern Millie," I know in person she has great capacity to entertain an audience, which must be made even greater in a live theatre. Although, as I said, the entire cast is professional and spirited, the only other standout is Florence Lacey, who may be out of the traditional age range for ingenue Irene Molloy, but has such a lovely voice, used to particularly wonderful effect in "Ribbons Down My Back," that it hardly matters.

Though I have yet to hear the original Broadway cast recording, or others featuring Pearl Bailey and Mary Martin, I have heard the film soundtrack and seen the film it came from, and despite Barbra Streisand's incredible singing, that recording just doesn't make you revel in the wonders of this score from the first listen like this one does.

It almost seemed as though every elderly female stage and film star--from Ethel Merman to Dorothy Lamour to Ginger Rogers--tried their hand at portraying Thornton Wilder's famous matchmaker, Dolly Levi, following the musical's smash 1964 opening, and yet the role will always belong to Carol Channing. When Pearl Bailey assumed the role on Broadway, however, she created yet another critical sensation with Jerry Herman's first major musical--not only because it was an all-black cast, setting off a long-running trend; and because the great Cab Calloway came out of retirement to play Horace Vanderbilt; but mainly because "Miss Pearlie Mae" brought her own famous ad-libbing personality to the role, creating a most interesting interpretation that is immortalized on this recording. "What is it about Dolly, the meddlesome widow of Ephram Levi that has continued to attract leading ladies of a certain age? Unless you are a Dolly addict, you might wonder what makes the character such a perfect fit for so many different personalities. [Carol] Channing, who played the role on Broadway from January 16, 1964 until August 8, 1966, and [Pearl] Bailey, who captivated a whole new audience when she played it from November 12, 1967 to mid December 1969, were hardly similar types. During Bailey's run the extraordinarily beautiful and petite Thelma Carpenter played Dolly at Wednesday matinees.

"Dolly was also a refreshing and revitalizing showcase it proved to be for fabled and still able film stars and dancers and comediennes. The Broadway run featured in succession: As of August 9, 1966, Fred Astaire's best dancing partner Ginger Rodgers appeared. She was followed by big band singer/big mouth comedienne of radio, stage and screen Martha Raye from February 27, 1967. 20th Century Fox musical film star Betty Grable, known for her "million dollar legs"" may or may not have tried to show them off from June 12th, 1967, until she was replaced by hilarious TV/ nightclub standup comedienne Phyllis Diller on December 26, 1969.

"After Diller it was time for the legendary Ethel Merman to belt out Herman's tunes, including two he wrote especially for her. Actually, Merman was Herman's first choice to play Dolly. Her gig began on March 28, 1970 and she harnessed the miserly Horace Vandergelder for the last time on December 27, 1970. After Bailey returned with the first revival on November 6, 1975 for approximately seven weeks, Channing made a successful return in the role on March 5, 1978. Because Ms. Channing never missed a performance, no one ever got the chance to see her understudy, Jo Anne Worley. But other Dollys include Barbra Streisand in the 1969 film version, Betsy Palmer and Tovah Feldshuh (Paper Mill Playhouse), Mary Martin in the London production, Bibi Osterwald (Bailey's replacement for a week in November 1969), Lainie Kazan in Atlantic City, Dorothy Lamour in the national road company, Molly Picon at the North Shore Music Theatre, and Michelle Lee and Eve Arden in separate road tours.

I'm not going to tell you that Ms. Bailey is the best Dolly on records, for it's impossible to hear anyone in the part and prevent my subconscious from immediately referencing Carol Channing. I sat third row center in Minneapolis during her 1995 farewell tour of HELLO, DOLLY! And she was spectacular, even at 70-plus years.

However, overall this IS the best DOLLY on records. Philip J. Lang revamped his orchestrations and wrote a brand new overture for this recording of the 1975, all-Black revival. Jack Crowder's gorgeous baritone gives us a Cornelius far different from Charles Nelson Reilly's interpretation, and Emily Yancy's sweet soprano is softer and less forceful than Eileen Brennan's, which is fine with me. But back to Ms. Bailey. Michael Portantiere writes ("TheaterMania Guide") "The performance of the title song is the best ever recorded: Bailey and the boys have the time of their lives as saxophones wail, trumpets blare, a banjo strums, and the xylophone player goes nuts. A real pistol as Dolly, Bailey is very funny, but just as strong when delivering a serious song like 'Before the Parade Passes By.'" My only carp is with the slightly ragged singing by the chorus.

The recorded sound is swell, and thanks to ArkivMusic, you can now own this marvelous recording, since it's available as an ArkivCD, part of their CD-on-Demand service. You can order it either from amazon.com or directly from ArkivMusic. Unfortunately, this one does not come with liner notes.

Simply the best Dolly ever.......2002-07-04

The classic Jerry Herman score has never been done better than it is here. Pearl Bailey is superb, as is Cab Calloway. It outshines the original Carol Channing version. The woefully miscast movie version (with Streisand reprising her Funny Girl role under the guise of Dolly Levi)isn't even in the same league. In fact, it isn't in the league under this one or the one under that one.

If you like musicals, you'll probably like the orginal version, but this one is a treasure not to be missed.

Pearl Bailey is Magnificent!.......2000-02-27

I've got several cast versions of "Hello, Dolly!" -- including the Streisand movie soundtrack -- but this is the one that I always seem to come back to. The whole album is well-sung and well-orchestrated, but the ultimate reason to listen to it over and over is Bailey's incredible performance. There's a genuinely impish quality to her rendition of "I Put My Hand In," but below that you hear the strength of a real survivor. She's all personality in the show's title number, and this really comes through as she kids with the waiters. Maybe the highpoint on the album, though, is the version of "So Long, Dearie" near the end of the album -- you'll never forget the way she delivers the line about Horace's cash register.

Many songs sound as if they were recorded using a pan flute or cheap harp. I would stay away from this one.

The Title Is Accurate........2002-02-21

I'll be honest - I mainly bought this CD for one song - the new recording of William Finn's "Unlikely Lovers" from Falsettos.

In fact, there is a sticker on the front of the Great Musicals CD which states the following - "Unlikely Lovers from Falsettos is new to CD."

This isn't really correct. This particular recording of that wonderful second act song is new, but the song itself was previously recorded and released on the original cast recording of Falsettoland many years ago. I have also read a review of another (unauthorised?) CD recording made in Michigan of Falsettoland.

Anyway, this new recording is so powerful and emotional, I'm glad I bought the CD.

Readers might be interested to know that the 2001 recording of U. Lovers was made at Joe's Pub in January - the same place where Finn's Infinite Joy was recorded.

To the best of my knowledge, U.L. wasn't performed in the live show. I believe this as in an interview, Finn stated that the only song from Falsettos they were to perform in Infinite Joy was The Baseball Game (wonderfully conveyed by Stephen DeRosa on the CD). Also, in this new recording of U.L., unlike the recordings on Infinite Joy, there isn't any audience reaction. I suspect that the cast made this recording before or after audience arrived.

Loved this new version. It's accompanied by a solo piano. Lewis Cleale has a more traditional male voice (light baritone?) than Michael Rupert's higher, head, some might say "character" sound. Both are more than pleasant on the ear.

Also, on this recording, there's an a cappella section towards the end of the song; on the lyrics "...let's pretend..." Quite affecting.

As for the rest of the album, well all the tracks are gems in one way or another. Particular favourites of mine include -

"Lady's Maid" from Titanic. With it's "up down up" three note/syllable melody structure (millionaire, constable, engineer) it is immediately catchy, and is a great example of an "I'm about to start a journey, so wish me luck as I go" type of show song.

"All The Wasted Time" from Parade. Loved the almost folk influenced sound and the soaring voices; including Carolee Carmello who is heard on Infinite Joy.

"New Music" from Ragtime. It 'builds' beautifully and is a great example of the work of a contemporary song writing team - the highly talented Flaherty and Ahrens.

I suppose the thing is, that many musical theatre buffs will already have many of these songs on CD. However, you many not have THESE recordings - e.g. - the "If You Could See Her" from Cabaret is from the 1998 version, the "Do-Re-Mi" from (what else?) The S.O.M. is the 1998 recording.

If one was being picky, the following points might be made -

For a CD celebrating RCA's 100th anniversary, this collection is somewhat 'top heavy' - 9 of the 14 tracks - almost 65% were recorded in 1992 or later.

Also -

With a number of the American based performers, even when they are portraying non-Americans, their native accent is still recognisable. This is particularly noticeable on track 14 - "Do-Re-Mi" ("...Here, I'll make it easier for you...") and, to a lesser extent; track 2 - "Prologue - Tradition" from Fiddler ("...trying to scratch out a pleasant simple tune...")

But when one is dealing with material and performances of this level, such points are minor quibbles.

It's not stereo.......2005-01-10

I bought this solely for "Once Upon a Time", and was dismayed that the CD is mono, not stereo. The quality of the recordings leaves much to be desired, as many of them lack the pristine quality I'm used to on a CD.

classic arrangements by the classic gentlemen ~ Percy Faith.......2004-02-16

Two albums from the Columbia Records people blending different decades "Li'l Abner" (originally released CL 955 in 1956) and "Broadway Bouquet" (originally released LS 9156 in 1965), sharing the unmistakable style of the "Percy Faith Touch" ~ you know in an instant you're in for the best of the best ~ Duke Ellington was so taken with Faith's arrangements, that he would give anything to be able to arrange in that fashion.

Let's begin with "IT'S A TYPICAL DAY" along with "LOVE IN A HOME", both from "Li'l Abner", wonderful opening counterparts and the stirring arrangements by Maestro Percy Faith ~ "JUBILATON T. CORNPONE", uplifting cue that will keep bouncing in your head for hours, maybe even days ~ "IF I HAD MY DRUTHERS", one of the forgettable tunes from the show ~ "NAMELY YOU", has to be the best and favorite song of the Johnny Mercer and Gene De Paul score ~ by the way, these two composers penned the lively screen musical "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers", both scores were sure winners from two talented songwriters, Percy Faith steps up to the podium and takes it to another level.

Now with "Broadway Bouquet", we have perfection within the realm of lush arranging, so flawless "HELLO, DOLLY!" (Jerry Herman), "ONCE UPON A TIME" (Adams/Strouse), "SOMEWHERE" (Sondheim/Bernstein), "SUNRISE, SUNSET/FIDDLER ON THE ROOF" (Harnick/Bock) (one of my all-time favorites, can't get enough of this score), "WHO CAN I TURN TO (WHEN NOBODY NEEDS ME)" (Bricusse/Newley), "A QUIET THING" (Ebb/Kander), "MAKE SOMEONE HAPPY" (Comden/Green/Styne), "WHAT KIND OF FOOL AM I?" (Bricusse/Newley) (two of the best songwriters in the business), "LONG AGO" (David Heneker), "THE SWEETEST SOUNDS" (Richard Rodgers) (his credit of compositions goes through the ceiling, will never be another like 'em), "AS LONG AS HE NEEDS ME" (Lionel Bart) (a wonderful classic that is still popular by today's standards), "THEME FROM "GOLDEN BOY" (Adams Strouse) (another team of composers that have made an impact on the Broadway scene) ~ an example of the "Percy Faith Touch", so effortless, you feel like you're floating on a cloud ~ falls into Percy's many albums of fabulous string arrangements, they grabbed the attention of the listener and wouldn't let go. Can't think of any other arranger/composer who left such a great legacy as this man!

Highly recommend to ALL fans of Percy Faith ~ thanks to Collectables for releasing this collection from the vaults of Columbia Records ~ so listeners sit back, relax and enjoy a small part of Maestro Percy Faith's fabulous career!

I'm a HUGE Mantovani fan and have had mixed results trying to upgrade my collection to CDs. This collection is the original orchestra arrangements of all the classics. This is the one to buy.

The Mantovanti Orchestra shows off their "marvelous versatility" in this "wonderful" collection of "8 CDs", with titles that tell you "just what to expect", such as: "The Love Songs", "Memorable Classics", "Itallian Favorites", "On Broadway", etc. You can set the MOOD for practically ANY occassion! There are even some "popular" selections that we all know and treasure like: "Moon River", "Over the Rainbow" and "Autum Leaves"!
You will NOT want to remove these GREAT CDs from your CD Player, once you have listened to them! They make "nice" background music for small get-togethers or "lovely" background music for those "ROMANTIC DINNERS", for you and your "SPECIAL SOMEONE"!!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS SET!!! It is a GREAT DEAL for the money, even at the full price!!!
