Kean (1961 Original Broadway Cast) [Cast Recording]

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Although he's barely remembered outside of Broadway-buff circles, Alfred Drake was one of the few male leads who could draw crowds in the 1940s and 1950s, having scored hits in Oklahoma! and Kiss Me, Kate. Drake excelled at oversize emotions, but also knew when to switch to self-mocking awareness (a quality indispensable to playing the over-the-top Fred Graham in Kiss Me Kate). Unfortunately, Kean was a star vehicle that forgot--whoops!--that even a strong lead isn't enough when there's no show to surround him or her, and so it flopped in 1961. In a made-to-measure part, Drake played Edmund Kean, a Regency London actor embroiled in quasi-swashbuckling adventures that involved plays within the play. (The book was based on "a comedy by Jean-Paul Sartre," itself inspired by Alexandre Dumas.) The score doesn't have many memorable songs, but at the same time, it provides an excellent overview of Drake's considerable vocal gifts. Indeed, the singer--who's omnipresent throughout the recording--is in particularly fine form, and his command of the Broadway idiom is so complete that listening to him is both a pleasure and an education. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

Compiled from two back-to-back shows in Union, New Jersey, this historic live recording captures three CDs' worth of eclectic performances by the stripped-down quartet configuration of the JGB. Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter takes vocals on his compositions "Promontory Rider" and "Tiger Rose." Packed with key originals and plenty of covers, it's an essential snapshot of Jerry at his peak.

One of rock's true icons, Grateful Dead lead guitarist, vocalist, and goodwill ambassador Jerry Garcia pursued an eclectic array of folk, bluegrass, roots-rock, and R&B-influenced solo projects throughout his career. Recorded both solo and with the Jerry Garcia Band, his albums include a slew of classic covers and many songs that became an integral part of the Grateful Dead's live set.

5 out of 5 stars No Money for Koontz.......2007-04-25

I have spent thousands of dollars on Jerry and Dead shows, albums, etc. since my first Dead show in 1973.

I was about to purchase this item on Amazon when I saw the references to the Garcia Estate aka. Koontz.

I believe she is the antithesis of the Dead spirit and is only looking to make a buck. As a result, I pass on this purchase and will only buy through GDM - non Koontz profit.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best JGB.......2007-02-26

3 stars is way too harsh for this recording, but there are better JGB discs out there. I'd start with the 1991 double disc recordings, then I'd go back the Saunders/Garcia era. Check out the Legion of Mary vol. 1 from Rhino, or the old Keystone discs. The problem with these discs, is that it's all Garcia. It's Jerry jamming, with 3 other guys backing him up. There are great moments in it, but in my opinion there is just nothing too special about this show that warrants this release.

5 out of 5 stars Nice jammin'.......2006-06-30

I bought this based on how I liked another JGB cd (welcome to our world) and am pleased with the sounds on this one. Garcia shows his genius on these extended jams. I get an upbeat feeling while listening to this music. Even the synthesizer music, which is corny in the context of current synthetic sounds, adds to the groove. All three discs are great, especially if you are looking for some great guitar jamming sounds. If you like this one, I encourage you to take a look at the JGB's "Welcome to our world".

4 out of 5 stars wow........2006-06-01

i can't believe this is out on cd. i just stumbled across it today! my late husband and i had this on tape years and years ago. absolutely my favorite dead/jerry related show. but the one we had.. had masterpiece, dear prudence and russian lullaby on it. it's really too bad they didn't include those with this release and it's the reason i'm giving it four stars. i did however find the complete version at the jerry garcia store. the extra disc is included free and has the late show.. entitled "way after midnight."

4 out of 5 stars Not even close to the 1991 JGB Release.......2006-03-01

Kean is a better than average performance but pales in comparison to the 1991 2 CD JGB release which is the Cornell 1977 of JGB shows. Kean lacks electricity and magic typically found at the better shows.

5 out of 5 stars Kean's the King of Broadway.......2007-06-05

This is a jewel, a treasure of the Broadway of the early 1960's. No one could sing like Alfred Drake and Forrest and Wright surpassed themselves in melding Broadway and Shakespeare into an entirely original musical style. With Lee Venora and Joan Weldon as his leading ladies, Drake soars the romantic heights in this beautiful original cast recording.

3 out of 5 stars Alfred Drake in his element.......2004-12-27

KEAN features Alfred Drake in one of his greatest Broadway performances. The show recounts the adventures of a Regency-era actor and what happens when his stage role of OTHELLO starts to overflow into his private offstage life. The score by Robert Wright and George `Chet' Forrest (who also wrote the dazzling KISMET in which Drake played Hajj) is a beguiling mix of operetta and musical theatre.

Drake is joined by not one but two lovely leading ladies (Joan Weldon and Lee Venora) who both have their own shining moments in the score (Lee Venora's "Willow, Willow Willow" being a major highlight of the entire score). Other standouts include "Sweet Danger" and "Let's Improvise". Despite the presence of Drake and the clever Wright-Forrest score, KEAN shuttered after a relatively-short run. An intriguing show, and Alfred Drake at the peak of his formidable talents.

5 out of 5 stars ALFRED DRAKE AT HIS FINEST, GORGEOUS MUSIC . . . .......2004-07-23

I've been a passionate fan of Broadway musicals since I first discovered THE KING AND I in the 50s, and I have been a zealous collector of original cast albums from the day I had enough money in my pocket to purchase one. Owning a large vinyl collection of shows, I was in no rush to replace my LPs with the more expensive CD versions. Mostly I would scrounge through the "previously owned" bins at my local shop and take advantage of the record clubs' generous offers. Eventually my financial situation improved to the point that I could replace my vinyl while at the same time acquire new and/or unfamiliar shows. As my fetish grew, I became frustrated that some major record labels, especially Sony, failed to issue some of my favorite shows in the digital format. Needless to say, I am beholden to small labels like DRG, Fynsworth Alley, AEI, etc., who have insight and courage to preserve important examples of the American musical theatre that otherwise would be lost to us.

Mark Blitzstein's brilliant JUNO is one of those "give my right arm for" shows that never made it to CD until Fynsworth Alley's marvelous reissue. (Available only on-line.) Three other favorites of mine that Columbia/Sony didn't see fit to release on CD are currently available from DRG, and I enthusiastically recommend all three: THE ADVENTURES OF MARCO POLO, ARCHIE & MEHITABEL, and KEAN. (See my reviews of MARCO and ARCHIE elsewhere.)

KEAN owes much of its magnificence to the extraordinary presence of Alfred Drake. His voice is at its absolute best in this recording, and listening to it fills me with both reverence for his brilliant talent and sadness because he is no longer with us. Prior to OKLAHOMA!, the American musical theatre had not encountered an actor/singer -- as Elisabeth Vincentelli writes in her Amazon.com editorial review -- whose ". . . command of the Broadway idiom is so complete that listening to him is both a pleasure and an education." I seriously doubt Broadway will ever see or hear his like again.

I refer you to Jaime J. Weinman's excellent review. My only disagreement is with "The Frog and the Grog," but then I find the entire score brilliant. Wright & Forrest's earlier experiences with adapting melodies of Edvard Grieg, Heitor Villa-Lobos, and Alexander Borodin are in evidence here. They have created sumptuous, soaring melodies for Drake and his leading ladies Lee Venora and Joan Weldon, as well as uptempo novely songs like "Chime In" and the aforementioned "Frog." Alas! They don't write Broadway musicals like this anymore. What a pity.

If you love gorgeous melodies and great singing, KEAN is for you. Thank you again, DRG.

P.S. Regarding a prior review, it was Clay Warnick & Mel Pahl who adapted Rimsky-Korsakov, not Wright & Forrest. The result was THE ADVENTURES OF MARCO POLO, also highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Kean.......2004-05-26

This musical is one of the most luscious scores ever created for the Broadway stage. Not only is one treated to Alfred Drake's beautiful voice, but the story is very clever. Lush romanticism pervades the music, which has some absolutely lovely melodies- especially Sweet Danger.

Not the best known musical, but it should be.

4 out of 5 stars Alfred Drake is brilliant........2003-05-15

I've read that the show's production was overblown and that the plot was slim, so that's why it flopped. I just listened to the cd and the music is fairly good, not great, a few songs do stand out. So why the 4 stars? Because Alfred Drake is brilliant! He gives a magnificent, well rounded, and perfectly shaded performance that must not be missed. Bravo!

1 out of 5 stars For collectors only.......2005-08-22

Even among cast album collectors there are probably many who barely know this show. It had a short 5-month run in 1955. The cast album quickly went out of print and that was that.

Now that Decca Broadway is in the process of re-releasing every cast album in their inventory, they have given us a beautifully re-mastered CD of ANKLES AWEIGH.

The show is junk. It was junk in 1955 and time has done nothing to change that. Look at the tunestack. Not one song made the hit parade (and 1955 was when many hit parade songs came from Broadway and Hollywood.)

The songs are terrible, the plot is terrible and the performances are terrible. It's not even a "fun" flop like WHOOP UP of FLAHOOLEY. It's just a big flop.

Decca has now given us all of their cast albums from the 40s and 50s. The label is now dipping into other catalogues it now controls including M-g-M (BAKER STREET will finally be on CD soon); Kapp and ABC. Bravo to them for that. Collectors who must have EVERY show will want to grab this one while they can as it probably won't stay in print for long.

3 out of 5 stars flashy campy musical finally on CD.......2004-08-05

ANKLES AWEIGH makes its long-awaited CD debut! The flashy musical penned by Sammy Cahn and Dan Shapiro is bubbly and bouncy, and the sister-act of Betty and Jane Kean are at the peak of their combined and solo talents.

The convuluted plot involves the sisters as they get entangled in various romantic misadventures and misunderstandings. Many people have commented that the show bears a certain similarity to the 1969 off-Broadway delight DAMES AT SEA, though DAMES is far more charming and clever in its pastiche of the 1930's.

ANKLES AWEIGH is campy, cheesy fun, and has a lot to recommend it to Broadway fans. Peter Filichia as always offers great liner notes, and the remastering is crisp and clear.

Another great reissue from Decca Broadway..and keep an eye out for their next big release coming soon, the 1944 Broadway cast album of MEXICAN HAYRIDE starring June Havoc!

4 out of 5 stars It's more then Anastasia!.......2005-01-03

I have an LP of the original Anya Broadway Cast and this is certainly a better score and recording. But most reviewers forget that this Anastasia CD also includes additonal material (tracks 19 - 26) from other Wright & Forrest musicals including cut numbers from Grand Hotel/At the Grand. I find these songs very interesting and enjoyable and for me these 8 numbers alone are worth the price of this CD!

Reviewer's note: ANASTASIA: THE MUSICAL is a reissue by Original Cast Records of THE ANASTASIA AFFAIRE: THE RACHMANINOFF MUSICAL issued in 1992 by Bay Cities. It bears little resemblance to the original musical, ANYA.

"The musical ANYA opened on November 29, 1965 as the last tenant of the Ziegfeld Theater. Written by George Abbot from Guy Bolton's English version of Marcelle Maurette's play the score was fashioned by Robert Wright and George Forrest, using themes from the works of Rachmaninoff. Abbott directed and Hanya Holm choreographed a cast that included Constance Towers, Michael Kermoyan, Irra Petina, and Lillian Gish in the leading roles. With mixed-to-negative reviews, the show closed December 11, 1965 after two weeks of previews and sixteen performances. United Artists, an investor in the show, issued the cast album of ANYA shortly after the opening." -- from Merrick S. Talcove's liner notes for THE ANASTASIA AFFAIRE

I own a copy of ANYA, but I haven't listened to it since (perhaps) 1965. However, I remember it fondly, and while listening to it I fell in love with Constance Towers. Not as good as Wright & Forrest's scores for THE SONG OF NORWAY (which I had heard on the radio), KISMET and THE GREAT WALTZ (both of which I had seen staged by the Los Angeles Civic Light Opera), but listenable non-the-less. And KEAN is one of my all-time favorites. I truly believed that Wright & Forrest could do no wrong.

So when I read the Amazon reviews for ANASTASIA: THE MUSICAL, I thought, "These guys don't know what they're talking about." So I did some web research and located a used copy of THE ANASTASIA AFFAIRE. I put it in the player, but what emerged from the speakers had little resemblance to the ANYA I remembered. This was truly bad!

Wright & Forrest have been tinkering with ANYA every since it flopped in 1965. What was once a large scale Broadway musical is now an intimate chamber piece. It might possibly work as a chamber opera, if the libretto weren't so awful! Some of the lyrics have to be heard to be believed. The show also calls out for an orchestra. Reducing Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto to a piece for twin pianos is comparable to watching "Lawrence of Arabia" on a two-inch black and white TV. Rachmaninoff wrote Romantic music with a capital "R." An orchestra can underscore the passion of the characters and carry us along in a way two pianos can not.

I think all the fiddling to ANYA has damaged it beyond repair. Only four of the original songs remain: "A Song from Somewhere," "Here Tonight, Tomorrow Where?" "Little Hands," and "If This Is Goodbye." I believe Decca owns the United Artists masters, including ILLYA, DARLING, the musical version of NEVER ON SUNDAY. I urge them to reissue ANYA so we can hear once again the original score. Otherwise, I may have to dig out my LP and hook up my turntable.

P.S. Even though it's bad, it's not as awful as NIGHT OF THE HUNTER or Z . . . THE MASKED MUSICAL, and I was unable to finish JEKYLL & HYDE.

1 out of 5 stars Very Average.......2002-12-07

A terrible attempt to revive this tired (fictional) story. Poor music and lyrics by an unknown who should remain so.

2 out of 5 stars Poorly done.......2000-01-12

Is it just me or is Anastasia supposed to be a little younger? Every single person on this recording sounds like an elderly person. And there is no orchestra. It's all piano. It's all operatic. No stand-out songs. No power voices. Very disappointed.

Actually, it all started in the beginning. In the beginning, God said, "Be there light ." And light was. And it was good. This was the first time mankind would learn that an utterance in and of itself could create something by telekinesis. There is other reference to the creative power of an utterance in Judiasm, for instance, a long time ago, rabbis are said to have uttered a Name to create a bovine calf. Rabbi Israel, who lived in the 18th century in the Carpathian Mountains of Eastern Europe, was the most recent to have been given the gift to be able to utter a Name and change something. This is a story about him. The opera begins with a boy from Brooklyn who has a problem. In a dream, he goes back in time to Eastern Europe and meets Rabbi Israel, the Master of the Holy Name. As they solve a similar problem in the Rabbi's time, the problem is solved back in Brooklyn, all by the utterance of the Name.

          Album Description

The Cantamus Girls Choir are a 40 strong female choir whose members are between 13 and 19 from the town of Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. They have been a local institution since the choir was first formed 38 years ago. They continue to be an inspiration to a community that has suffered in recent years. In an age where we are bombarded by images of teenage pregnancy, drug taking and binge drinking, here is a window on another world of genuine youthful Endeavour, exuberance and dedication. There are sponsored sings and carol concerts to help fund the cost of hiring the coach that takes the choir to recitals all over the UK and Europe. This is no amateur operation, however. Through the network of helpers, voice coaches and relentless rehearsals, this is a multi award-winning group. They are currently the Olympic Choral Champions - a competition which involves 150 choirs from 45 countries. EMI. 2005.

          Customer Reviews:

          5 out of 5 stars Absolutely awesome!.......2005-12-12

This is an amazing album which appeals to young toddlers and old dodderers. It is hard to believe that this breathtaking singing of both popular pieces like "Fix You" and "Everybody's gotta learn sometime" and a few standard classics comes from 13-19 year olds from the middle of England (Robin Hood country; a former coal-mining area)and not from a professional group.

The girls' singing make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, give you goosepimples and bring tears to your eyes - in fact, give you a heart-warming experience!

Buy the album for yourself. Send the single to all your relatives, friends, classmates, teachers. They'll love you for it!
