No One Is Alone [Soundtrack]

Laurie Beechman's cameo as the Broadway Star-to-Be in the original cast of Annie proved prophetic. Her powerful voice subsequently took her to fame as the Narrator in the original Broadway cast of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and even after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer she continued to sing. Her friend and collaborator Sam Harris recalled, "She had cancer for nine years, when she was expected to live for six months, and during that nine years did two more Broadway shows and two or three more records, and got married, and created a wonderful life and career." This celebration of life continued through her final album, No One Is Alone, a collection of inspirational theater songs. While one would expect such solemnities as "You'll Never Walk Alone" and "Climb Every Mountain" (which are indeed here), the album also includes the rousers "Beautiful City" and "These Are the Good Times." There are more introspective tunes, of course, among them Beechman's duet with Harris on a wedding medley of "Make Our Garden Grow" and "One Hand, One Heart," as well as an especially touching rendition of Brigadoon's "There But for You Go I"--clearly indicating that she was feeling no self-pity. Beechman finally succumbed to the cancer in 1998, leaving No One Is Alone as a final gift to all those lucky enough to be touched by this artist. --David Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars barbara better thab barbra.......2007-07-13

Now in her mellow old-wine years, Barbara Cook continues to amaze. She weaves her voice through well=chosen songs with honey-sweetness leaving the growls and bombastics to the "other" barbra.

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps the most exquisite recording of her career.......2007-07-07

Forget the fact that Ms. Cook is celebrating her 80th birthday in October. This recording is breathtaking for its vocal and emotional artistry and integrity, and any student of the vocal art will be blown away by her total mastery of this baker's dozen group of songs. Impossible to pick the highlight; perhaps Sondheim's "No More," or her amazing connection of his "One More Kiss" and "Goodbye for Now" (two songs that have sadly had few recordings). Certainly the final duet with the equally remarkable Kelli O'Hara of "Make Our Garden Grow" from CANDIDE, Ms. Cook's triumph of over 50 years ago, should bring chills and tears to the hardest of souls.

5 out of 5 stars The Beauty of Musicals.......2007-07-05

Barbara Cook wraps her gifted voice around a number of favorites from the world of musicals, everything from Passion to Peter Pan. The arrangements are simple but heartfelt and will stay in your ear long after the CD has stopped playing. A must buy for fans of Barbara Cook or musicals!

5 out of 5 stars The best.......2007-07-05

This is the best Barbara Cook CD in a long time. The choice of material is outstanding and Barbara is in great voice.

5 out of 5 stars She never stops amazing you.......2007-06-14

This most recent CD reveals that Barbara Cook's interpretive powers have only grown: how could you not be moved by "Something's Coming" from West Side Story, with a wonderful combination of Bernstein's upbeat tempo and some lovely, reflective moments. With Sondheim's "No One is Alone" and "No More" from "Into the Woods" and some pieces from "Passion, a little Rogers and Hammerstein and finally ending up with "Make our Garden Grow" from Bernstein's "Candide," fans of Cook's miraculous artistry are in for a never-too-soon fix. Those of you who love musical theatre and don't know this glorious treasure have a huge treat in store. Don't wait. Push that button now!

4 out of 5 stars Very pleased.......2007-06-10

I wasn't sure what to expect when I bought this CD. True, I could have listened on line before buying but that would have taken the fun out of the purchase. Besides, I really didn't care for the CD the first couple of times I listened but now I really love it. It's not something to listen to all the time but given the right circumstances e.g. a small gathering of friends, it's perfect. If I'd listened to online, I wouldn't have purchased it.

5 out of 5 stars Sumptuous and mellow.......2002-11-28

The six men of the King's Singers present sweet and light-hearted madrigals of such English composers as Morley, Weelkes, Dowland, Wilbye and Byrd. The thirty five selections include "Now is the Month of Maying", "Though Philomela Lost Her Love", "Sing We and Chant It," the celebration of tobacco entitled "Come, Sirrah Jack, Ho!" and a host of other fa-la-la-la-la venues interspersed with wistful laments. I love the rich, sonorous sound of a male vocal ensemble, with countertenors, tenor, baritones and bass, and these six singers do a great job. Occasional instrumental accompaniments by lute and tabor are included, but this group doesn't really need it--I could listen to them for hours all by themselves. Also quite enjoyable, as well as educational, is their earlier release, "The King's Singers' Madrigal History Tour: Italy, England, France, Spain and Germany". For a more risque' take on the vocal music of Renaissance England, you might get a kick out of "The Art of the Bawdy Song" by the Baltimore Consort with the Merry Companions.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Collections of English Madrigals.......2002-03-27

Any fan of the King's Singers will regret not having this album in their collection.

This album offers a veritable feast of the choicest English madrigals found on any comparable album. From the obligatory "Now is the Month of Maying" and "Fair Phyllis" to the more obscure "Tan ta ra, cries Mars," there is certainly enough on this album to bring a smile to lovers of Renaissance music - and a spark of recognition to anyone who sang traditional madrigals in high school or university. For serious students of early music, this album comes very highly recommended.

Among the more sonorous offerings on this album, Jones' "Farewell, Dear Love" and Dowland's "Come Again," cannot be ignored. Nor can Bennet's immortal "Weep O mine eyes" be matched more musically than here by the King's Singers.

This album has been played again and again for almost 6 years as both serious listening and background working music. And it has yet to lose its delight.

4 out of 5 stars A Delightful Collection of English Madrigal.......2000-08-16

With 35 tracts to enjoy you're sure to find a couple of favorites. I gave this CD 4 of 5 stars compared to 5 stars for the King's Singers World Madrigal Tour CD. If you prefer all your songs in English, this will be your 5 star CD. Tract 32 "Come again" is my favorite due to the surperb tenor lead and melodic development. Compared to many polyphonic early music styles (1300s-1485), this era (1500-1610) provides many memorable melodies.

4 out of 5 stars A wide variety.......2000-04-28

This is an excellent sampling of English madrigals. This presentation, given by an older roster of the Singers, is a nice introduction to the world of the madrigal, and English madrigals in particular.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful songs.......2003-02-07

If you're a Sondheim ballad fan, this a must-have. While there are a few renditions that aren't great (Not a Day Goes By is way overdone), the selections from Follies sung by Barbara Cook are outstanding. The Cleo Laine version of "Send in the Clowns" is lovely and Stephen Collins does an amazing good job on "Sorry-Grateful" from Company. Still, it's the Follies songs that truly shine!

The term Irish tenor may be fraught with as many wrong-headed, anachronistic characterizations as any phrase in music. But Ronan Tynan not only returns here to the PBS airwaves that helped spread his fame as a member of the Irish Tenors trio, but he overturns a few clichés while delivering a live concert (recorded at the Royal Dublin Society in June 2002) that encompasses everything from Broadway and pop chestnuts to Italian operatic repertoire. Tynan rewards Irish traditions old and new (a medley of Brian Kennedy's and U2's "Life, Love & Happiness"/"I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For") and even makes left turns into folkie songstress territory (Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now," Sarah McLachlan's "Angel"). Backed by RTE Orchestra, the unlikely international star invests himself completely in all of it, his strong, crystalline voice playing off the traditions, while forging strong new bonds with the contemporary. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Simply Wonderful.......2005-08-29

This CD is just as great as the more recent "Ronan" CD. I clicked on 3 stars in error. This is a 5++ star album! His voice is sheer perfection, and the songs are wonderful. I also highly recommend the DVD of "The Impossible Dream," even though I didn't care at all for the London Community Choir who sing four songs. Note: The American version of the DVD doesn't have the 25-minute "Dr. Courageous" extra on it that the Irish version does. I saw him in concert last month, and besides having a voice that soars to the rafters, he is warm, funny and endearing.

4 out of 5 stars Music like this could make me a convert.......2005-08-17

I've always been a rock and roll fan since back in the 60's. Listening to this cd could easily convert me into a classical music fan as well. Wow what a voice.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful!.......2003-01-22

Having seen Ronan in person recently in the U.S., I was impressed first and foremost by his singing ability, and second by his stage presence and warmth. He is a special performer and human being. I am proud to be a Ronan Tynan fan.

4 out of 5 stars Tenor terrific.......2003-01-18

I am not a fan of this kind of music, but I bought this after hearing a few sound snippets at amazon and WoW! what a find. Excellent song selection, powerful singing, fine music quality for a live recording. Expand your horizons and enjoy. (get this wayno)

5 out of 5 stars oh molly oh.......2002-12-15

ronan tynan is a great role model for adults and children alike. he was born with a deformity and made a decision he would make something of himself, he had a goal and he surpassed it. no one puts as much of their heart into as he. he puts the audience into his songs, he makes us feel he is singing to each one of us individually. HE IS THE GREATEST IRISH TENOR I HAVE EVER HEARD, INCLUDING JOHN MC CORMAC the great irish tenor of the 30's

5 out of 5 stars The Artistry of Nelson Eddy.......2006-11-04

Nelson Eddy's flawless singing and diction, with a modern orchestral accompaniment, make The Artistry of Nelson Eddy a romantic, sophisticated musical experience.

3 out of 5 stars Artistry of Nelson Eddy.......2006-08-22

Contemporary music which is sung well but voice not as expected of Nelson Eddy. The true baritone of his voice missing. This may be the recording but CD received in good condition.

5 out of 5 stars A Nelson Eddy Tour de Force: Magnificence here on earth.......2006-03-17

I have most of the movies of Nelson Eddy. Together with Jeanette MacDonald, this team produced some of the most romantic movie-operattas ever made. But the sound quality of those movies pale in comparison to the magnificence of this production.
Nelson Eddy has never sounded better, aided (1994) by more modern recording techniques, the quality here (even with a disclaimer) is beyond belief. He has got to be one of the premier baritones of all time. Singing Popular tunes adapted from classical themes, he may be without peer. I have a CD of the young Sinatra singing "Full Moon and Empty Arms" to Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. He is not in the same universe with Eddy, whose crisp diction, timbre, fullness, perfect pitch, and passion ~ YES! PASSION! ~ must be heard (hopefully on on quality audio) to be fully appreciated. This is AWESOME. Maybe the best it gets here on earth. This is a wholly magnificent CD if you appreciate really good music, a fantastic baritone, and have a romantic bone in your body. I am astounded. Until today, I had no idea that Nelson Eddy was this good. This CD proves he was.

4 out of 5 stars For those who are already fans of N.E. only........2003-12-22

Nelson Eddy made these recordings when he was about 60 years old and it shows. He retained an excellent voice for a very long time, allowing him to perform successfully until the day he died. However, this particular recording seems to emphasize vocal decline, in terms of control and range. The problem may be that the songs presented here are mostly VERY GREAT classical orchestral pieces, to which are sung pop lyrics. In my opinion, most (but not all) of the lyrics to these songs are not worthy of their music and are incongruous. The last number, "Alone Together", an excellent Schwartz/Dietz song (which seems out of place with Rachmaninov and Ravel,) is actually a duet with Nelson's partner, Gale Sherwood. It was recorded a couple of years later than the other songs on this album, and is given a bossa nova background that in this mix, practically drowns out the singers! As to the overall sound quality, there are some light snaps and pops as on a record, but the music is loud and clear. I do not mean to discourage Nelson Eddy fans from buying this album. I think you need this album. I own this album. Buy this album, and encourage the release of more albums and radio recordings by Nelson Eddy. What I do mean to say, is that "The Artistry of Nelson Eddy" is not the best introduction to the artistry of Nelson Eddy. His recordings from the 30's, 40's or even 50's are a better purchase for the beginner. Once you love Nelson Eddy, then pick up this album.

5 out of 5 stars A Surefire Way To Turn A Bad Day Into A Good One!.......2003-04-12

The music on this CD is so beautiful it brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it. It proves that the music of Nelson Eddy is simply timeless. I have always loved his voice, but these arrangements bring out the very best of it. It is highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a powerful, moving musical experience.......2001-03-27

I bought this album without having heard Laurie before, so I was taking a chance. Believe me, it was worth the risk. She has a very powerful voice, and can really deliver on the heavier songs on this album. "Climb every Mountain" became like a new song to me after hearing her sing it. And I was literally moved to tears on her incredible version of "You'll Never Walk Alone", a song I'm usually fairly indifferent to because it's been done so often. But it's never been done the way she does it! She was incredible, and I'm so thankful she shared her beautiful voice with the world.

5 out of 5 stars What a singer!.......2001-02-02

Laurie Beechman was one of the best actress' of our time. Her vocal strength and ability to act made her truly unique. I have been a fan of Laurie since I was a child, and her passing was quite upsetting. Her music helped me through so much growing up, and I have always dreamed of meeting her one day. Well, that day can never come. Her CD No One Is Alone is such a wonderful album. And to think... she recorded the entire album during the final stages of her cancer. By listening, who would have ever known. She has made a lasting impression on many, most importantly on myself. May she continue to live in everyone's hearts, and never be forgotton. One last thing... be sure to check out her verson of "Someday" (Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame). It is absolutely georgeous...

4 out of 5 stars Laurie Beechman Lives On with this Incredibly Moving CD........2000-08-05

Laurie Beechman (star of JOSEPH, CATS, ANNIE and LES MIZ) has released her fourth album. This one is very moving. Laurie Beechman had been struggling from Cancer, and shortly after this CD was released, she passed away. This makes the CD all the more memorable and inspiring. Laurie soars in this CD with intense emotions as she had with her past 3 albums. But this one is special. Laurie gives the most stirring rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone." It's the most uplifting and heartfelt version out there. Laurie soars higher than ever before. She is so gorgeous. Walk on Laurie.

"Climb Every Mountain" is just as rousing and stirring as "Never Walk..." Laurie puts more than her heart and soul into these songs.

A tremendous rendition of "Make Our Garden Grow" from CANDIDE sung with Sam Harris (GREASE, JOSEPH, THE LIFE) They Belt this heartfelt rendition beyond all expectations. His voice compliments her very well.

"Someday" from Disney's HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME. This is a lovely song that didn't get recognition from me until I heard Laurie sing it. The lyrics are quite moving. Ofcourse, they were written by Alan Menken!

Other notable songs: "Being Alive" (COMPANY) which she goes against the slow, conventional way to sing the song. The haunting melody of "No One Is Alone" (INTO THE WORDS), Laurie does a beautiful job. A different, livlier version of "Beautiful City" (GODSPELL). "There But For You I Go" (BRIGADOON). "I Am Changing" (DREAMGIRLS)

Laurie is Phenomenal, and should always be remembered, and this is a great CD to do so.

5 out of 5 stars unbelievable and inspirational.......1999-10-11

this work of hers is such and inspiration to all to have fought her illness and sing these songs with such and incredible sense of hope and surviving. Climb every Mountain has to be one of my favorites. this is sung with such an emotion of a survivor. What a mountain she did climb!!! i only wish that she had made it because I know that she was only just beginning to give us a taste of the talent that she truly possesed. She will be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Perfecto........1999-02-07

Ms. Beechman was a true interpretist and vocalist; a "belter's belter." These arrangements, notedly the "Never Walk Alone" with the Broadway crew backup and "On A Clear Day", are simply extraordinary -- simply stunning.

4 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-03-04

Vecchi, Arcadelt, Lassus, and Monteverdi were all masters of the high Renaissance period of vocal music, which spanned the late 15th to the early 17th centuries. In this era, vocal training was necessary for all would-be composers, since the church operated most of the music schools, which were directly connected to church choirs. Therefore, sacred music was a great part of the output of these 4 men, but they were also proficient and active in the secular music genre, producing many secular part songs called 'madrigals'. 4 of which are included on this disc: 'Fa una canzona'-'Il bianco e dolce cigno'-'Tutto lo di'-'Amor:Lamento della ninfa'. The English had their own flowering of madrigals strongly influenced by the Italians; three of these are on this disc:'Alas, Departynge Is Ground for Woe'-'Rest, Sweet Nymphs'-'Fair Phyllis'.
There are 2 rather humorous songs by Haydn on this recording; I was surprised at their inclusion, but after hearing them,I found that they do fit very well musically with what goes before.
Mendelssohn inherited from Haydn the strong tradition of part-songs in German, and introduced into it the rich harmonies and the emotional yearnings of the romantic era.
Ralph Vaughan Williams represents a generation of composers who looked back beyond the romantic and classical periods of the Renaissance for their models in vocal composition. He took the smooth vocal lines and modal harmonies reminiscent of Lassus and Monteverdi, and added his own style of touches of dissonance and parallel voice leading.
Vocal music sung in parts has been one of America's strong traditions since the beginnings of the nation. From the varied nationalities projecting their own individual backgrounds , both sacred and secular, we have a true melting-pot of folksong styles.
The STRONG point for the worth of this recording is its very excellent collection of songs; they do span the 4 centuries very well, and the choice of material is interesting, varied and well-sung.

Having earned his composing stripes after the 1960s, John Adams had the pioneering work of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley close at hand as he ventured into his trade. And, while minimalism's historical continuum helps place Adams, he used Reich, Glass, and Riley (among others) only as a starting point. And here's proof: a 10-CD retrospective of nearly all Adams's recorded compositions on Nonesuch Records, the label that also issued Steve Reich 1965-1995 and Kronos Quartet: 25 Years. Adams's Harmonium, a choral work of startling energy and effervescence, appears here in a new recording, as do distillations of both The Death of Klinghoffer and Nixon in China, two path-clearing operas. Over the span of a career covered by Earbox, Adams has returned minimalism to traditional instrumental ensembles as well as to projects that at once advanced a political commentary and took that commentary back to orchestral audiences. And so, in far less time than his predecessors, Adams created works that now play like standard repertoire pieces: The Wound Dresser and Shaker Loops and the Violin Concerto--all of them are here. What these works demonstrate is a fierce creativity on the one hand and perhaps a hunger for commercial advances on the other. Adams may at times be a bustling free thinker, but he sounds ever conscious of what audiences are listening to. As for the works themselves, they remain every bit as daunting as when written.

Some may object to particular selections. I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, for example, hardly ranks with Adams's best work. But this box isn't a mere best-of; it's an almost-all-of. At times terrifically American--especially in the news-aware operas and their narrative pragmatism--Adams well deserves a major box set, and its coverage is appropriate to his varied, stylistically diverse output. As with any large-scale retrospective, Earbox--which fairly bristles with Adams's new composition, Slonimsky's Earbox--has spots where fans might balk at the quality of the composer's writing. But it's got a fantastic accompanying booklet along with its many hours of inarguably modern and thoroughly listener-friendly music. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Moved to tears.......2004-03-18

Never before in my life was i moved so intensely and directly by classical music. I put the first cd in my player and a few minutes later tears are flowing. I find myself dancing and moving to a rythm i already seem to know. Wow, i just have to share that.

5 out of 5 stars Nonesuch delivers.Again.......2002-11-27

John adams is one of the most popular living composers of"modern" classical music[I believe the cutoff point, though arbitrary is usually WWII}.I came to him late, through my husband. Modersn classical music , I said? What the hell is that?My husband kept playing bits and pieces of adams for me, and more and more i found myself amazed. and swayed. His operas have been groundbreaking{Nixon in China} controversial{Death Of klinghoffer},his compostions sublimely beautiful{shaker Loops or harmonium].HIS STATURE IS WORTHY THEN OF SUCH A MONUMENTAL CAREER SPANNING BOX SET.This 10 disc set[great value, again from NONESUCH}encompasses Adams' entire career, and though there are some misses here{I was looking at the ceiling and then i saw the sky doesnt quite fit},it is still magnificent. the Highlights are ,{for me} the Wound Dresser, Chamber symphony,Violin Concerto, of course, Shaker Loops and Harmonuim are wonderful. The true jewels here are Nixon in China, the Chairman dances and the Death of Klinghoffer, which is simply a masterpiece. The set comes with a wonderful book, which contains essay's by Robert Hurwitz {An Uncommon Man}renaud Machart[John adams as seen from europe} and Essays before an earbox by Adams himself.A Chronology and dicography are included. A wonderful study of an American original, worth the investment, Highly highly recommended

4 out of 5 stars harmonia in excelsis.......2001-11-12

I must agree with Mr. Bartlett, particularly with regard to "Ceiling." It may well be because his Violin Concerto and Harmonielehre are so powerful. 4.5 stars.
Interesting, and likely intentional, is that two names in the extensive liner book fail to mention two great and glaringly obvious precursors: Carl Orff and Raymond Scott. Without "Carmina Burana," there would be no "Harmonium." Orff has his mark all over Adams's gifted and epic compositions. Similarly, though there are glib references to "cartoon music," the polymath engineer/musician Scott is a seminal figure in American music, and casts a large shadow over the witty juxtapositions and sense of play one loves in Adams's work. In all, an excellent career overview.

5 out of 5 stars Our greatest living composer.......2001-07-22

As a composer, I'm staggered that anyone could fail to be gripped by this music.

That anyone can use the words "spoiled, overrated" amazes me. I emphatically disagree with "A music fan"'s review.

I don't think it's "mind-numbing"; I think it's spiritual and exciting. To me it's the most substantial music being created in our times.

I'm really sorry that anyone could fail to enjoy it, and really recommend others to listen for themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD.......2000-04-02

This compilation should turn even the most curmudgeonly listerner into a fan. Beautifully recorded, great notes -- and it's a heck of a bargain!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Collection of Live Tracks.......2005-06-14

This double-CD set contains 19 previously unreleased numbers, one of which, All the Little Things, is included in both live and studio versions. Most of this collection was recorded the California Tour of Summer 2003 (a fantastic tour, by the way) with a couple of exceptions, along with the studio version of Little Things to end the second CD. Something for everyone here, Blues, Funk, Pop, ballads.

Nina is perhaps one of the best singers alive today, certainly one of the most under-recognized. She is not only an amazing singer but she has the ability to add her voice as another instrument - check out Summertime and Elevator! Her songwriting talents are showcased on this collection, and I think that once you hear this double-CD set you'll be hopping over to her website to find out where she is playing! These discs will definitely keep finding their way into your CD player.

5 out of 5 stars I can't believe nobody has reviewed this title yet........2004-06-20

I cannot fathom a more perfect voice. Nina Storey can take your breath away, leave your heart pounding, or drift you into a hazy, ecstasy-filled torpor as you drift, drift, drift away with her voice. I picked up the rest of Nina's Work, but nothing compares to this collection from her live performance in Dallas. You can just imagine the presence this woman has on stage. From the distorted bass background in 'All The Little Things' to the lullaby of 'Summertime' Nina delivers a powerful, addicting series of vocals that will have you coming back for more, and more, and more . . .

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Tenor.......2004-05-25

I'm more a fan of classic popular standards than of classical music, but as the classical numbers give Mario Lanza a little more opportunity to show off his glorious voice, I find myself enjoying these fully as much as the popular selections.

His approach to popular song is admittedly on the operatic side, and it's fascinating to hear how well such pieces translate into a more classical orchestration. And Lanza's versions stand as equals alongside the popular versions (by such greats as Perry Como, Frankie Laine, Kate Smith, Georgia Gibbs, Dean Martin, Vic Damone and Vaughn Monroe) that have been among my favorites for many years.

The spoken introductions on the selections from his show are an added bonus, and (contrary to one of the reviews below) these songs are beautifully done. The fact that they are live and only minimally rehearsed only makes them all the more amazing.

The 2-cd set consists of high quality recordings of 47 songs and is a real bargain at the price.

4 out of 5 stars The good and the bad in one collection.......2001-09-02

This is (unintentionally, I'm sure) a warts-and-all illustration of Mario Lanza. True, there are magnificent recordings scattered throughout (Serenade, Beloved, E Lucevan Le Stelle, Passione, etc) but the overall impression one is left with is of a sloppy and undisciplined singer who just happened to possess a great voice. The fault lies squarely with BMG and their predilection for selecting the very worst of Lanza, and placing it next to the best. Many of the inferior choices come from Lanza's Coca-Cola radio show, recorded between 1951 and 1952, and featuring prominently on Disc Two. (Disc One is a more consistent selection, and repeats the same tracks from the British one-CD set "The Ultimate Collection", reviewed elsewhere on this site.)

The "Coke" shows were generally under-rehearsed, and represent what in many respects was the most chaotic period of Lanza's short life. Thus it's not surprising that the tenor often sounds unfamiliar with his material, is sometimes off-key, and also makes numerous stylistic lapses. Never intended to be heard beyond their initial broadcast, these supposedly "one-off affairs" nevertheless did produce the occasional gem, but one needs to look elsewhere for examples of those. The three exceptions on this set are the gloriously romantic If I Loved You, One Night of Love, and the poignant Memories. Danny Boy also deserves honorable mention, although the ending should have been remade.

O Paradiso, Somewhere a Voice is Calling, Core 'Ngrato, Deep in My Heart, and With a Song in My Heart represent low points from the Coke Shows. Other poor choices include And This is My Beloved, from the disastrous Lanza on Broadway LP; a rough-as-old-boots Una Furtiva Lagrima; and an off-pitch Cielo E Mar (ironically the one studio recording on this set that *is* inferior to Lanza's Coke Show rendition).

Mario Lanza was blessed with the most spectacular natural tenor voice of the 20th century. Is it too much to expect for BMG to honor his memory more selectively? Where are Lanza's sublime recordings of Che Gelida Manina from "La Boheme", his M'appari, the Improvviso from Andrea Chenier and his unsurpassed Otello Monologue? Or the fabulous Some Day, the gorgeous 'A Vucchella and Lanza's own favorite recording, the haunting Voce E Notte? For the very best of Mario Lanza, buyers will need to look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars New Fan.......2000-08-27

I am an 18-year old student. I bought this album after I heard a few of Lanza's songs in the Peter Jackson film, "Heavenly Creatures" and I must say that it is one of the best albums I have ever bought. Lanza was a master of his vocal instrument, drawing every ounce of feeling and energy from the notes and words to create a masterpiece of every song. The resulting pieces in this album combine to make up a beautiful and varied work, with something for every mood you may be in. The classics (such as "Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life"), are obviously appealing, but the lesser-known pieces (my favourite: "Una Furtiva Lagrima") make this a wonderfully enlightening experience. This is a truly Great album.

5 out of 5 stars Another CD from the best!.......2000-03-18

When I heard that Mario Lanza had died so many years ago, I was a college student who already owned five or six LP's of his songs. I was truly brokenhearted We had lost such a fine singer at such an early age. This CD is one of the best because of the diversity of songs, all marvelous.A fine addition to any collection.
