That said, I would strongly recommend this to anyone wanting an introduction to Goodman. The songs are well selected ('King Porter Stomp', 'Roll Em' and several others are Goodman staples, and 'Sing, Sing, Sing' qualifies as a Big Band Era anthem.) More importantly, the roster of musicians is like a Big Band hall of fame. Harry James (trumpet), Gene Krupa (drums), Ziggy Elman (trumpet), Zeke Zarchy (trumpet), Vido Musso (saxophone) and of course Goodman's clarinet -- James and Krupa went on to start their own bands, with some success. Vocalists? A very young Ella Fitzgerald and Jimmy Rushing, as well as Helen Ward, are pleasant surprises.

The music, if you can get past the low fidelity, is superb. Benny Goodman is credited with launching the Big Band Era by playing music that swung. While a lot of 1930s music has not aged well, the selections here sound great 60+ years later. Aside from the previously mentioned classics, there are standards such as 'Don't Be That Way', 'These Foolish Things Remind Me of You' and the Basie classic 'One O'Clock Jump'.

My advice: put away all of the modern techno-beat music for a day and play this CD. Focus on the remarkable solos and the way the ensemble just swings together and has a great time. Once your ears are accustomed to monaural, the rest is a a real treat.

These are the classic late 30's sides. Most of this material has never sounded better. They have added no echo at all and the music has the power it's supposed to have. Some noise from the master discs is present, but that shows they didn't get carried away with the resoration.

The songs are ones we all know and maybe love but it is Veggie Tales and that is always a big winner with my children. I happen to like Bob and Larry alot myself and don't mind putting this CD in the car for the children to listen to while doing my errands. It is good.

This CD is a lot of fun to listen to for the entire family. The songs are all fun and the dialogue in between the songs are clever and use a lot of things kids say while traveling. This brings out great laughs from my kids, and I even found myself smiling at a lot of the puns and silly jokes.

It's a great CD to listen to when on a long trip, or just a jaunt around town. The price can't be beat, either.

Great fare for around town driving . . . this collection of kids' songs is cute in the typical Veggie format, including a retro-60's version of "Ease On Down the Road" (my personal favorite). Of course, like all childrens' music, it gets old after 38 repeitions, but if I have to "pick my poison", this CD is definitely it!

Disney's latter-day attempts at building on its sterling character franchises have sometimes fallen short of the original's magic. But this Winnie the Pooh-inspired spin-off is a joyous musical surprise from first track to last. Veteran singer/songwriter Carly Simon seems to have soaked up a half-century of Disney animated song tradition and joyously made it her own on the seven new songs here, as well as a smart, modern folk-jazzy reinterpretation of the traditional "Winnie the Pooh" title tune. "If I Wasn't So Small (The Piglet Song)," "Mother's Intuition," and "With a Few Good Friends" are all charmers, while the march-along "Sing Ho For the Life of a Bear" taps into the vaunted Sherman Brothers tradition with playful joy. This is children's music without an ounce of condescension; indeed Simon's own children--Ben and Sally Taylor--are present on several of the tracks. Simon's sparkling slate of songs is augmented by five sprightly selections from Carl Johnson's orchestral score, and the collection concludes with a handful of bonus track demos by a solo Simon. --Jerry McCulley

UGH! My son's godmother is a BIG Piglet fan so I let him see this movie and I want to choke Carly Simon for the Mother's Intution song. I will NEVER let my daughter(s) see that part of the film or hear that song - too likely that they'll internalize the "good little wife" syndrome that decades of women have worked so hard to minimize. It's fine if that's how you naturally are, but for those of us who have more important things to focus on than constant sweeping and washing behind the baby's ears constantly (such as keeping the baby from climbing out a 2nd story window), this trite drivel is obnoxious. The fact that it sticks in your brain like superglue doesn't make it any more endearing in this household.

The renditions of the other, classic songs and "If I Wasn't So Small" are what saved this from a one star review, they're worthy of at least 3 or 4 stars, but I'm so annoyed about the one song that's stuck in my head from that movie that I can't be that generous. Mothers who aren't neat-freak tidy and don't hope for such things from their daughters, be prepared with the "skip" button in hand when that track comes up. I'm annoyed enough that it might be putting such ideas in my son's head about his far-future spouse's responsibilities.

A few good friends............2007-05-27

After seeing Piglets Big Movie and loving the music so much we had to get the soundtrack. Our favorite is....."With a few good friends and a stick or two, a house is built at a corner named Pooh". My children know all the lyrics and sing it all the time. It is feel good music. They also like to recall what is going on in the movie when a particular song plays.

I have a two year old that is currently in her Pooh phase...she adores everything to do with Pooh, and his friends from the hundred Acre Wood. We watched Piglet's Big Movie, and both of us loved the songs in it that buying this CD was a no-brainer. Yes, the tracks may not be long, but then again if you're the parent of a young child, you'll know that a tune may get played over and over again indefinitely:) We especially love 'Sing Ho for the Life of a Bear', 'Mother's Intuition', and yes, 'With a few good friends"...they are truly classics with so much meaning abt friendship, and life.

All around, this a great CD. I really like how it was put together.

The CD is actually divided into three sections --- Chapters, they're called. The first Chapter is The Songs and features all of the vocal songs from the movie. The second section is The Score and has the instrumental-only tracks. Finally (and this is a nice touch) you get a bonus section featuring Carly Simon's original demo tracks.

Of the original songs, my favorite is definitely Mother's Intuition. The music that goes along with it extremely zippy and catchy and the lyrics are a great match with what happens in that part of the movie. Second-favorite song --- "With a Few Good Friends," which I had already heard on the "Best of Pooh and Heffalumps Too" album. Another fun, upbeat, tune. Honorable mention to "Sing Ho for the Life of a Bear (Expotition March)" --- can you tell I like the ones that are fun and upbeat? But that's not to say I don't like the others too --- I really do, and they're all great.

The instrumental tracks are neat too. They really bring out the feel of the movie and all the various emotions. The Carly Simon demos are enjoyable too, I'm not ashamed to say I prefer the final versions of the songs, but it's neat to have Carly Simon's original work included.

Finally, there's something to be said for packaging. The case and disc artwork are superb. The album insert folds out into a mini-poster and there are lyrics for all of the tracks in the Songs section.

I live in Mexico and bought both version, English and Spanish of this disk, both are great. It is very recommendable to get a great time with your kids.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.
