Very disappointing, considering what it could have been.......2007-04-20
Take a look at the running times:
Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes
What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.
C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.
Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.
This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.
Always a pleaser.......2007-03-31
I listen to music all day with patients in my dental chair. This one is a winner with everyone. Patients always comment on how they recognize a song. Who doesn't love John Williams? His music transcends time.
JOHN WILLIAMS 40 Years of Film Music.......2007-01-10
This 4 cd pack is an anthology of all John Williams works. From his earlier works "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Jaws" right through "Indiana Jones" and the most recent"Star Wars" prequel movies are included. Williams work in thriller and horror are also included. If you are into soundtracks and love movie music this is an essential buy. The quality of the music is excellent. With ten or more tracks on each cd it's well worth the money.
Movie Music Magic & Memorabilia.......2006-12-13
This four CD set expands on the previously released John Williams Greatest Hits. It's a grand collection of nearly four hours of famous music scores from over forty years. There are many songs never before available in any collection. The short liner notes tell a great tale of musical movie history and include all of his numerous award nominations and wins. Each song (oddly enough) mentions the actors and the director, so fond are John Williams's memories of his work with these people. All of the conductors are mentioned along with specific orchestras, choirs, arrangement and orchestration specialists and even the publishers (contractual, I am sure). The only things missing are his early television scores, such as those for "Lost In Space" (by Johnny Williams back then). But with four discs, one has nothing to complain about and everything to enjoy!
John Williams: 40 Years of Outstanding Film Music.......2006-11-28
I have been a huge fan of John Williams and I have known about his music for years. However, I never actually bought any of his music on CD. I was rather skeptical about purchasing this CD but when it arrived I knew I had made the right choice. The sound quality of the compilation is outstanding. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do a great job under the direction of Paul Bateman. The original London Symphony Orchestra CDs of John Williams' Star Wars Trilogy CDs are marginally better but this is still a great CD compilation. If you love ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter, you will love this compilation soundtrack. Buy it, listen to these CDs in the car and enjoy every minute of the collection!!!

A Bewitching Cast Recording.......2007-04-27
I love original cast recordings. They capture the flavor of any show. The one thing that bothers me of this cast recording is the show never made it to Broadway. And the cast and the music sparkles
Ian (Deadwood, Lovejoy) McShane as Daryl van Horne (the Jack Nicholson role in the movie). McShane strolls thru the music with his bass voice as Rex Harrison or Peter O'Toole may have done. The witch trio is played by Joanna Riding, Maria Freedman and Lucie Arnaz (yes Lucille Ball's Daughter). All together mesh this music with the emsemble numbers.
John Demsey and Dana Rowe's Lyrics & Music are tongue and cheek, not know if this a tribute to other broadway styling or an original try.
On the whole, I wish someone would put this on Broadway NOW-it is witty and funny..and since the Producers is closing on Broadway, its time! Cameron Mackintosh's last musical Mary Poppins flopped-this may be a shot in the arm. And McShane has finished with Deadwood--Its Time!
Get this soundtrack NOW--so when someone smart brings this back, he know the music and will love to watch this on stage--ITS TIME for this BEWITCHING Musical to reappear on stage!

Well Worth Exploring.......2005-11-28
I saw this show in both its original and revised incarnations. Strong score, weak book.
This recording is a must for musical theatre performers -There's some great, underused audition material here. Buy the CD, and then get the vocal selections (still in print). Break a leg!
Casts a spell over all..........2004-10-05
This recording is one of those that you listen to and smile throughout. The leading ladies all have such amazing presence, it makes you want to join them in their songs. I would say the best song on this recording is Evil, sung by the character Felicia Gabriel; such witty lyrics and a tune, worth purchasing the recording in and of itself. BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! I assure you it will not let you down!
Almost perfect!.......2004-01-16
This Score's just awsome! I haven't seen the show yet, but it seems to be as funny and as bewitching as this Soundtrack. Perfect Singers, a Mix of many great Music Styles!
OUVERTURE: Great Orchestra Track - Standard Overture, but very nice.
EASTWICK KNOWS: A classical Opener with a very beatyful "Preprise" of LOOK AT ME and a heavenly ending.
MAKE HIM MINE: Some kind of Softrockballad with perfect musical arrangements and three very well singing leading ladies.
I LOVE A LITTLE TOWN: Nice Melody, funny little piece - but it doesn't really make the Story go on.
EYE OF THE BEHOLDER: Some kind of sweet, quiet Tango, filled with Passion.
WAITING FOR THE MUSIC: As passioned as EYE OF THE BEHOLDER. It's played only by Violins. Very nice.
WORDS,WORDS,WORDS: At the Beginning it's just boring, but the End of this Song makes it worth hearing.
DIRTY LAUNDRY: Very nice and funny, some kind of 60's Jazz Music?
I WISH I MAY: Again the three leading ladies do their best. The slowly beginning and headblasting ending 1. Act Finale.
ANOTHER NIGHT AT DARRYL'S: Super!!! Great Jazz/Swing-Theme with a sexy singer, a real Showstopper!
SOMETHING: A Classical love duet. Funny to hear something like that in a Musical!
DANCE WITH THE DEVIL: Wow!!!!!
EVIL: Another great Swingin' Song. But I don't like his slow beginning.
LOOSE ENDS: Don't like it that much, it's too boring. But it's got a nice Melody!
WHO's THE MAN: Great Swing/Jazz again!!! And the lyrics are awsome!
THE WEDDING: Not the best musical Number. But it's needed for telling the story.
SOMETHING REPRISE: The only Reprise on this CD. I'd like to have a few more....
LOOK AT ME: The three ladies at their best! An astounding Mix of LOOK AT ME and MAKE HIM MINE - a good Finale for this CD - but not the real Finale of the Piece...
Everybody who loves Musicals ... no, everybody should buy this CD, everybody. Buy it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Spellbound? I doubt it..........2003-11-29
In the parade of really average new musicals (interestingly produced in both the United Kingdom and Australia by Cameron Mackintosh) this one is not much chop either. An ambiguous, boring score by Dana P. Rowe makes a weak story...well...weaker. The jokes are high standard musical comedy (you'll be falling asleep by the end of the overture...which happens to be the most spectacular moment in the production). The production elements once again save this disastrous combination of boring melodic constructs and catastrophic lyrical "undertones". The three most uninspiring roles for women in late twentieth century music theatre are here to be beheld in this chaotic, messy, technical jumble. We know where Mackintosh's millions go when the three leading women rise from a complex tangle of metal cable above the audience, hovering stupidly while they settle into their harnesses.
In the professional Australian production (Princess Theatre 2002, Melbourne) leading lady Marina Prior (Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Noises Off, Secret Garden, The Pirates of Penzance etc...) was cast in one of the lead female roles, to much disappointment as the music was so hideous. Famed Australian theatre and film performer Geraldine Turner was cast as the mid-American conservative Felicia Gabriel, which saved the show.
The early demise of Cameron Mackintosh's "The Witches of Eastwick" in Melbourne signalled the closure of a sad chapter in musical comedy history.
Appalling, almost laughable.

Witches of Eastwick Score Review.......2007-06-06
This score, composed by John Williams, is a must-have soundtrack for anyone who appreciates Williams' music. Although the film is not the greatest, the score adds a unique flavour to William's repertoire of excisting classics. There are a number of themes which have been cleverly woven into the music, some being mischevious, such as the main 'Dance of the Witches' theme, and others quite sombre yet breathtaking, such as the 'Ballroom' cue. Overall, this soundtrack will keep you entertained throughout the whole hour or so of playing time, and will also continue to surprise on numerous listenings.
Delightfully wicked composition from the Oscar winner!.......2007-03-04
While John Williams will probably be most remembered for his music to Spielberg blockbusters ("Jaws," "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," "Raiders of the Lost Ark," "E.T., The Extra-Terrestrial," "Schindler's List," and "Jurassic Park," among ohters) or other moneymakers (the "Star Wars" saga and "Superman-The Movie"), his score to the Jack Nicholson film ranks as one of his finest. The score foreshadows some of the arrangements that he would later use in the "Harry Potter" series but has hints of Camille Saint-Saens as well as Williams' own earlier work.
However, the composer really pulled out all the stops and created a blend of excitement, wonder, playfulness, along with macabre humor. He carefully incorporates a "linking" melody throughout most of the fourteen cuts, making each selection a fitting accompaniment to the ones that precede or follow it.
"The Dance of the Witches" is a triumph and stands as one of the composer's most infectious and jaw-dropping concoctions. And "The Seduction of Suki and The Ballroom Scene" are near perfection, both lilting and captivating. "The Destruction of Darryl" explodes with frenetic action that I'm sure the musicians were exhausted after recording it.
"The Witches of Eastwick," along with the composer's work for 1979's "Dracula" and the early 70's television of "Jane Eyre," reveal the many facets of a multi-talented artist who has been at the forefront of film music writing for more than four decades.
The Devil gets all the best tunes.......2007-02-03
After 15 years of fruitless hunting in the UK, I was delighted to find the Witches' soundtrack lurking in Amazon's US vaults.
One of Williams' finest hours, it's much wittier than his more popular 'magical' movie scores - namely the Harry Potter series for which he merely plundered his own Star Wars back catalogue.
Mischievous and playful yet edged with a hint of menace, it's the perfect accompaniment to a film about Satan and his unwitting concubines. Williams evidently put a lot of thought into matching the music to the characters and the actors that play them, combining Jack Nicholson's roguishness with the beauty and maturity of Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfeiffer. The result is utterly enchanting.

Though it's haunted by goblins, ghosts, and monsters, it is hard to find anything very satanic in much of this music, except its fiendishly difficult pyrotechnics. Its sole purpose is to display Gil Shaham's devilishly dazzling virtuosity, glorious tone, elegance, humor, and bewitching charm. The only substantial piece is Tartini's "Devil's Trill Sonata," in Kreisler's edition complete with his long, diabolically strenuous cadenza; Shaham plays it very beautifully, with genuine, moving expressiveness. Elsewhere, his tongue is never far from his cheek, whether he is tossing off Bazzini's "Rondo de Lutins" perfectly at top speed, or having fun with the fireworks of Korngold's "Caprice fantastique," Sarasate's "Faust Fantasie," Grieg's "Puck" arranged by Joseph Achron, Paganini's Caprice No. 13, with a piano part by Robert Schumann, and Saint-Saëns' "Dance macabre," in which the pianist doubles for a whole orchestra. There are also transcriptions of passionately romantic pieces by Brahms and Mendelssohn, and excursions into different styles: William Bolcom's "Graceful Ghost" rag; "Transylvanian Lullaby" from John Morris's soundtrack for "Young Frankenstein" transcribed by Shaham's pianist, Jonathan Feldman; and the title piece, "Devil's Dance" arranged by John Williams from his soundtrack for "The Witches of Eastwick." You can safely invite this devil of a violinist into your home--he is excellent company. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
Halloween Violin.......2005-10-17
While not always frightening as much as classical music with a Halloween theme, this is a fine recording to play at parties if the guests fancy this kind of music. The title refers to the Devil's Dance, for violin & piano from the film Witches of Eastwick, a work composed by John Williams. It is followed by A Transylvanian Rhapsody from the comic film Young Frankeinstein. The most famous piece of all "Danse Macabre" was Saint Saens' ghoulish work that nearly caused his mother a heart attack at the premire. Using stage effects like smoke and mist, Saint Saens had dancing skeletons waltzing on stage. The Devil Trill Sonata by Tartini has a frightening story behind it. It was rumored that the composer dreamt that the Devil gave him the score to this violin piece. It is played at an impossible speed and is one of the most difficult violin pieces ever composed. Only few violinists take on this piece. The music on this album is however not as scary as some other classical Halloween CD's out there but violin afficionados will be quite delighted.
Puzzling choices, and not all that devilish.......2004-10-21
I'll say right off that Shaham's technique is top-notch, which is what one expects from such an album. And this is fine playing, with the violin and piano generally blending well.
But while this was clearly intended to be a "concept album," the artists/producers made several puzzling (and frustrating) choices that left me wondering just what the concept was supposed to be. The music is "devilishly difficult" at some times (the Tartini, for example), "creepy and eerie" at others (the "Danse macabre", others). However, several of the pieces are neither dazzingly difficult nor all that creepy - the Brahms and the Mendelssohn, for example, fail both definitions and, frankly, just don't seem to fit on this album. And then, there's the Paganini B-flat caprice - a solo violin piece transcribed for violin and piano, weakening the focus on violin virtuosity - while the Ysaye is left as a solo piece . . . well, a **piece** of a piece - we're given only a part of one movement of a four-movement work that is both very difficult AND built around that ultimate "creepy" theme, the "Dies Irae." Why only part of a single movement?
The net effect of all this is an album that doesn't seem to know what it wants to be. It's almost as if someone committed to an album concept without making sure there was enough material to fill the album. Further quibbles: the violin is placed somewhat too far back, for my taste; on a virtuoso album, I want to be "up close" to catch all the nuances of the performance. And the balance between violin and piano is less than ideal at times, at least to my ear.
As I said, the playing is fine; it's the concept execution that falls short of "as advertised."
Watch Out Where You Play This CD.......2002-05-17
As everyone says this is an extremely enjoyable disc. While it played fine in my ordinary CD player, the one in my computer couldn't handle it. Not only wouldn't it play, but it crashed the whole machine. Real deviltry at work!
... the best music ever recorded!.......2002-05-07
Sometimes I forget to breathe-this CD is so mind-blowing! This is the type of CD that you can't help but wave your hands around pretending to conduct the song!........ Ok.... Deep breathes.......o-o...I have to calm down! Now this CD features not just the best musicians but the best composers. They are John Williams (simply the best), Camille Saint-Saens (who composed one of the most famous "spooky" songs: Danse macabre!) ,and John Morris, you know.... Composed the music for YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, the funniest movie EVER! And guess what the theme song is on the CD!.. The charming yet spooky.........'Young Frankenstein': A Transylvania Lullaby. Hexenlied, one of my favorites, is by MR. Felix Mendelssohn (no he's not Felix the cat!)..........So...many....good.....songs....so.....Little--t-t-time. OK. It's time to wrap things up.....BUY THIS CD, YOU WON'T REGRET IT! :)
Pretty good.......2002-01-23
This CD has pretty interesting selection. My only qualm about it is sometimes it seems that the piano is competing for volume with the soloist, especially in Dans Macabre. This rendition is definitely not my favourite version. But some other gems make up for this, like Devils Dance, and La Ronde des Lutins. Devils dance is really well arranged and performed, and thats my favourite track on this album.

The Fantasy Album.......2007-05-09
You can't have too many Sci-Fi albums. This is a good addition to anyone's collection. A good crosssection of SF music. It even has music from The Thief of Bagdad from the 30s(?)
nice release from Silva.......2005-08-15
As with most of the recent Silva America releases, Silva Screen has compiled older recordings from previous CDs and added some new material exclusively for this release. In this case, Silva has recorded music from The first Harry Potter and Lord of The Rings films, both Mummy films and Gladiator. I'm not sure what else is new, but combine these excellent tracks with golden age material from Hermann and Rozsa, and some Elfman (Batman, Edward Scissorhands) and Williams (Raiders of the Lost Ark, Witches of Eastwick) for good measure, you have a heckuva compilation.
The performance is first rate with only the Raiders March being a subpar track.
Outstanding Fantasy Scores from Hit Fantasy Movies.......2003-04-05
If you're looking for some fantasy role-playing game backround music to play or just like mostly classical fantasy-esque music, this double CD contains excellent scores wrapped in whopping total of 140+ minutes worth of music.
Classic music from your favorite hit fantasy and action movies are found all over this huge, quality collection. You'll hear suites and sounds from outstanding films like Lord of the Rings, Gladiator, Willow, The Mummy, Harry Potter, Excalibur, Conan, Highlander, Batman, Edward Scissorhands and more.
A recent (2002) and impressive collection of musical scores, and by far the best CDs I've personally bought for fantasy themed music.
"successful formula from Silva spells Classic all the way".......2002-09-24
History repeats itself with this latest compilation from Silva Screen "Fantasy Album:Adventure & Fantasy at the Movies", a heap of music to digest within the twenty-eight tracks. All beautifully arranged and conducted by Paul Bateman and Nic Raine with the City Of Prague Orchestra in full force...with the helping hand of David Temple (choir master) of the Crouch End Festival Chorus. A perfect blend from brew master James Fitzpatrick(producer) who has impeccable foresight and taste in film music.
What I most enjoy about Silva, is the fact they always have the lesser recorded selections within the big picture...take for instance "THE SEVENTH VOYAGE OF SINBAD"(1958), "THE THREE WORLDS OF GULLIVER" (1960), "MYSTERIOUS ISLAND" (1961) and "JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS" (1963), all four composed by Bernard Herrmann who is in a class by himself, they'll never be another.
But for my money the highlight picks are "GLADITOR"(2000), Hans Zimmer's recreation of the spectacle that was Romes, with man against man, man against beast and the armies that clashed and fell under the powerful story that unfolds within this suite from the film ~ "BEETLEJUICE", "EDWARD SCISSORHANDS" and "BATMAN", each from the films of Tim Burton still ring true within the realm of great direction and storytelling, this can only be topped by composer Danny Elfman who adds the frosting to an appetizing treat ~ "LEGEND" (1985), can faeries, goblins, woodland spirits mix well with the Lord of Darkness...only the legendary Jerry Goldsmith can conjure up a tune to drive the entire cast into a frenzy with "FARIE DANCE/REUNITED", this is the stuff nightmares are made of with a happy ending of course.
With composers like Tan Dun, Randy Edelman, Danny Elfman, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, James Horner, Maurice Jarre, Michael Kamen, Brian May, Jerome Moross, Carl Orff, Basil Poledouris, Miklos Rozsa, Howard Shore, Alan Silvestri, John Williams and Hans Zimmer...one can only hope this will last forever. Silva, I don't know how you do it, but keep them coming...gotta love it!
Total Time: Disc One 71:43 on 15 Tracks & Disc Two 73:48 on 13 Tracks ~ Silva
