Brian Lane Green
Editorial Reviews
Soap Opera Weekly
There's no denying that Brian Lane Green has a great voice... A song stylist with a clear understanding of lyrics and excellent phrasing.
Jim Morris, Dramalogue
With a voice that's entreating and simple, Brian doesn't ask one to listen , he compels one to do so.

Despite its stellar pedigree (music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Comden and Green, book by Garson Kanin), 1960's Do Re Mi remains relatively obscure. It was said to be a lightweight romp, irremediably linked to the outsize personalities of its two original stars, Phil Silver and Nancy Walker. Now Nathan Lane and a superior cast prove that, while no masterpiece, Do Re Mi is a vastly entertaining musical. The book is an inane romp about a jukebox scam, but the score has brassy, swinging tunes ("Waiting," "All You Need Is a Quarter"), sentimental duets ("Fireworks"), a hilarious novelty number ("What's New at the Zoo"), and a couple of bona fide showstoppers ("Cry Like the Wind," "Make Someone Happy"). While Lane hams it up with his usual gusto, Brian Stokes Mitchell (Ragtime) and Heather Headley almost steal the show as the young lovebirds. The CD also includes a 20-minute 1961 interview with the creative team. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Joyful, Old-fashioned Broadway at Its Best . . ........2004-07-09
I resisted buying this recording until very recently, primarily because I believed that listening to it would sully the memories of Phil Silvers, Nancy Walker, John Reardon, and Nancy Dussault from the RCA original cast recording (sadly deleted - and sorely missed). Al Hirschfeld's drawings on the back of the CD and on the back of the booklet reminded me of how much these entertainment giants are missed AND how much we all miss Al Hirschfeld.
So, with trepidition, I began to listen. "The new orchestrations by Luther Henderson sound wrong," was my first impression. "They don't sound 'Broadway' enough." Then came the song "Waiting." "Randy Graff can't hold a candle to Nancy Walker," I thought. "Miss Walker would do such and such at this point. Oh, I'm not going to like this at all."
But it grew on me. Gradually I let myself appreciate Nathan Lane (no, he isn't Phil Silvers) and Miss Graff as they performed "Take a Job." "It's Legitimate" almost won me over with its Broadway brassiness. Brian Stokes Mitchell's "I Know About Love" is very fine, and Heather Headley brings a freshness to "Cry Like the Wind," even though Nancy Dussault's version still haunts me. But the turning point was "Adventure." Yes, I still miss Phil Silvers and Nancy Walker, but Nathan Lane and Randy Graff are superb here. So I permitted myself to enjoy the show, making mental notes like: "No one plays a schlmeil the way Nathan Lane does. Hum . . . I don't recall Phil Silvers being this human and sympathetic ('All of My Life')."
I'm glad that someone at the City Center Encores decided that DO RE MI needed a new recording, because this recording is a prime example of the genius of Jule Styne, Betty Comden & Adolph Green. On first listening, one might think that the songs are less than great, until you realize how well they serve the plot and the characters. For example, "All of My Life" reminds me of "Rose's Turn" from GYPSY (music by Mr. Styne). Both Hubie Cram and Mama Rose go through critical self-evaluation that allows the audience to see what drove these people to do what they did. These songs help us to understand the characters and even forgive them for the horrible things they have done. Styne, Comden & Green were true craftspeople who separately and individually have given the world some of the best moments in the theatre.
Again, thank you DRG and City Center Encores! Now, RCA, why don't you help us out and reissue the original cast recording. I'm sure I'm not the only one who would add it to my collection.
Bland, occasioanlly catchy, so-so cast.......2000-06-13
This isn't the one of the best shows ever written. This isnt one of Comden & Green's best efforts. Nor is it among Jule Styne's better scores. It is a solid mediocrity, the kind of thing written to play out a season, create a mildly enjoyable diversion, nothing more. It more or less succeeds at this, butit certainly doesnt exceed this goal. The songs are sometimes catchy - although the overture promises more excitement than is delivered. Many of the bigger songs sound rather like lyricised bits of walk-out music. The big showstoppers - Make Someone Happy, Cry Like the Wind - are totally unremarkable songs, not even barely integrated into the plot; the production numbers are quite dumb. The cast on this album is so so; Lane is ather bland, but he doesnt have much to work with. Randy Graff is surprisingly flat - hey, anyone suffers next to Nancy Walker. Headly and Mitchell are both good, although they seem to be taking the songs more seriously then they're worth. The CD seems to get blander every time i listen to it . . .all in all not really a worthwhile purchase.
Brian, Heather, Nathan and all the cast were great.......2000-03-28
If you are thinking of getting this album for Brian Stokes Mitchell's voice, i don't think it's worth your money. He only has a couple of numbers in here. One album that has a lot of good stuff with Brian's voice is "Kiss Me, Kate." Heather's number in "Cry like the Wind" is one of the most magical experience anyone can have.
Better recording.......1999-12-09
This 1999 recording of Do Re Mi is a better recording than the original Broadway Cast, but the music is about the same. The show was a fluffy thing built around Phil Silvers. Now the star is Nathan Lane. Different actors, different styles. Nathan Lane, of course, can sing. "It's Legitimate" is still a raucous number as it should be. One wonders, though, why shows like this are being revived.
Dated, but still a good buy.......1999-12-07
It took me a while to warm up to this album, as much of the score and the dialogue is very dated, if not downright corny. "The Late, Late Show" is a case in point. This bit of fluff was obviously intended to showcase Phil Silver's talent as a mimic, but many of the references are no longer relevant, or sound like bad cartoon dialogue. But despite such drawbacks, this is a fun album to have. Nathan Lane does about as well with the material as one could do nowadays and turns in an engaging performance. As for the songs, there are several you will want to skip over and over again, but just as many you will want to play over and over again. "Cry Like the Wind" is a song of timeless beauty, and there are many "upbeat" numbers you'll want to play just because it feels so good to listen to them. And then there is Brian Stokes Mitchell, who understandably has taken Broadway by storm. His clear, powerful baritone will knock you out of your chair on "I Know About Love" and his "Make Someone Happy" duet soars to the heights of the headphones. If you want to make yourself happy, buy this album and give it a little time to sink in. It's worth warming up to.

heard it and had to buy it.......2007-01-09
I watched Brian Green on a soap opera and that's what drew me to this CD. When a friend played it, what a wonderful voice! He takes some familiar tunes and makes them unique (He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother). I loved it so much, I bought it for myself and for a friend.
Music That Moves.......2005-08-04
Brian Lane Green has the ability, the gift, to make music to move your feet and move your soul. A genuine artist, a creator of what moves the world, song; listen to him and you will find a new sense of faith and passion in your soul and you will walk, at least for a bit, on air. Both he and the label producing the album are credits in a world of deficit. Thank you for your gifts.
A Brilliant and Heart Pounding Selection From A Huge Talent!.......2004-12-20
I've had this CD for a few years now and just can't say enough about it. BLG is a terrific talent whose career has ranged from Broadway to touring shows to top vocal ensembles to a solo cabaret act. Why he is not a bigger star reflects the fact that the American public is basically a group of unsophisticated, non-musical idiots whose idea of talent is Ms. Spears et al! This is the real thing, kids, so buy this before it goes out of print. Hopefully, we will see a new CD from this brilliant song stylist soon. It's been too long already!
be careful !.......2004-03-07
I bought this album on the recommendation in a review that this was THE BEST version of "Grateful". I felt that John Bucchino did a better job, more feeling, on his own album entitled Grateful. ALSO ... most important !! DO NOT listen to this CD if you are prone to depression or are in a depressed state.
He's Clear Out Of This World.......2003-10-12
I love and enjoy many styles of music and many styles of singing. However, I have NEVER heard a voice with the purity of Brian Lane Green's. It is perfection. I have heard "Grateful" sung by many others, but when one listens to Brian sing this incredible song, there is not the slightest bit of doubt in your mind that he is truly BLESSED, and truly GRATEFUL. With this song, as with every song on this CD, Brian lays his heart wide open .. his soul shines through with every note. Brian's voice has the velvet sound of Johnny Mathis and Nat King Cole, but it is distinctively his own. I adore this voice and he has chosen a selection of some of the most beautiful songs ever written. His voice is directly from heaven and he asked two beautifully gifted angels to accompany him .. John Boswell and John Bucchino .. two of today's most gifted pianist/composers .. Brian Lane Green knew exactly what he was doing .. stealing the heart of every person who listens to this CD. If you do not yet have this CD, do give yourself a beautiful gift. I love Brian Lane Green .. unabashedly and unequivocally, he shares his beautiful heart and soul sweetly and shamelessly.

Brian Lane Green's sophomore album, Waiting for the Glaciers to Melt, is a highly personal collection of songs both inspirational and inspiring. Mixing gospel, rock, and country, the talented singer and writer paints pictures of a childhood in the heart of America, of personal discoveries, and of love and longing in songs such as "Grandma's Song (Broken Wing)," "Dad and Me," "Inevitable," and "Waiting for the Glaciers to Melt." At times the songs and the singer lack the red-bloodedness of a Jason Robert Brown, but it's not hard to admire the passion Green throws into every number. --David Horiuchi

A Fine Album of Introspective Songs by a Cabaret Singer with a Lyrical Voice.......2007-01-24
I've seen Green perform show tunes and the American Popular Songbag in person and as part of the revue Three Men and a Baby Grand and love his voice. This album is a more personal project of his and all ten songs are self-penned. The lyrics reflect various points in his life and many revolve around his family ("Grandma's Song" and "Dad and Me" are the opening tracks) and reflect on moments from his growing-up years in Oklahoma. His soft lyrical voice is constantly pleasant though it becomes much more powerful on the "Grandma" track.
Only the "countrified" song "Home" (with a mandolin break by Barry Mitterhoff, from the band Hot Tuna) breaks the mood. There's little bio info on Green in the liner notes (a common shortfall in many solo artists' albums these days....you want to know more about them) so you'll have to rely on Green's lyrics. I hope that on future albums - and there should be future recordings from Green - he will mix his own compositions with songs by other new and over looked modern songwriters. He can use his pleasant voice to give those songs exposure as well and these will showcase is own writing too. This is a good first effort from the well-seasoned New York cabaret singer.

A stunning singer opens up with his own songs.......2006-05-19
I have been a huge fan of Brian Lane Green since his debut recording some years back. He is simply one of the best vocalists around today. So I was thrilled to hear "Waiting for the Glaciers..." , as it introduces this amazing singer's further talents as a songwriter. Staying close to his southern roots for the first track, "Grandma's Song" (which has a slightly gospel feel), Green then ventures to a song that is as personal as it can possibly be: "Dad and Me" ( with sweet bluegrass fiddle supplied by Deni Bonet) , which took my breath away as only the confession of a deeply buried secret could. By the way, I suppose one could complain that this CD doesn't stick to one genre only, but that's exactly what I love about it. Brain can sing ANYTHING so why shouldn't he use his fantastically versatile range to sing (and write) music in whatever mode he pleases? My favorite tracks? The moody and sensitive "I Miss You" ( which has a sophisticated tango feel), the dramatic, dark title track ( with one of the best penned lyrics on the CD...pure poetry!), and the truly lovely and jubuliant "Joy". I can't wait to hear more from this gifted singer/songwriter, whose music comes straight from the heart.
BLG is a master with lyrics and melody.......2005-09-13
With little knowledge of Green, his career, and his talent I put his new CD in. It starts off slowly with a sweet but optimistic song. The second song caught me by surprise but I knew at this point the man is immensely talented. The remaining eight tracks underscored this. He surpasses his own vocal ability by his song writing ability. Each song, and the combination of all of them, is complete with a story, a certain sadness indicative of living a life, and like life, we hear Lane's optimism. His lesson seems to be that darkest moments will pass giving rise to a new dawn complete with a new day and new hope. The sun shines, the birds sing, and we get another chance to make things right. His website shows his diversity of talent and this CD seems like a beginning of a new path as a song writer. Love, joy, and hope are his messages. Back at you, Brian Lane Green, I love your music, it is a joy, and I hope you sell millions.

Awesome talent!.......2001-03-05
This CD is an excellent blend of tasteful jazz and soaring vocals. Christopher Carl (one of theatre's most talented singers) and Brian Green (another awesome singer) collaborate to produce an exceptional CD. Stand-out songs include 'Dreamscape', 'Seasons of Love', Christopher Carl's hauntingly beautiful "Music of the Night" and Brian Green's exuberent "Truly Human." If you are in search of good music, I strongly recommend this CD. These two young men deserve the best, their voices ARE the best!
