Cabaret (1999 Studio Cast) (First Complete Recording) [Cast Recording]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
This 1999 entry in JAY's Masterworks Edition series captures Kander and Ebb's Cabaret in an excellent two-disc release that preserves the complete Broadway score with its original orchestrations and vocal arrangements, as well as an addendum of four songs written for the 1972 motion picture (including "Maybe This Time" and "Money, Money") as well as three written for the 1987 Broadway revival--111 minutes in all. Jonathan Pryce might be too similar to his most famous role as Miss Saigon's Engineer, but Oscar-winner Judi Dench (who shined as Desiree in a London version of Sondheim's A Little Night Music) and lyricist Fred Ebb himself are excellent as the older couple, Fraulein Schneider and Herr Schultz. Also good are Gregg Edelman as Cliff and Maria Friedman (best known for her role in the video production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat) as Sally Bowles. This production may not have the authenticity of the original Broadway cast, the Liza-led star power of the film soundtrack, or the grit of the 1998 revival, but it's a highly enjoyable reading, and the completeness of the score makes it a must for the voracious Cabaret listener. --David Horiuchi

The voice of Edith Piaf carries with it perhaps more national identity than that of any other recorded artist in the world. Tiny, frail, and tragic in her life, Piaf brought French identity to the rest of the world in a way that was understandable to all. Known as "the Little Sparrow" in her country, her voice was strong, bold, and passionate, even as she grew more infirm. The archetypical torch singer, she had massive popular success with songs like "Milord," "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien," and "La Vie, L'Amour," included here with 18 other classics. While this is a great compilation of some of her best material, the complete lack of enclosed notes or biographical material may frustrate those not familiar with her fascinating career. However, the work of one of the most original songbirds of all time speaks loud and clear for itself. --Derek Rath

"For me, singing is a way of escaping. It is another world. I'm no longer on earth." .......2007-07-17
She said about her singing better than anyone ever would, "For me, singing is a way of escaping. It is another world. I'm no longer on earth." When I hear her singing, I am no longer in my world, I am in the world of music, love, passion, irony and humor, breaking hearts and smiles through the tears, love found and lost forever but never in the world of regrets. She always looked the life in the eye and she regretted nothing. She was a small woman (1 m 42 cm) with the greatest, strongest, and most recognizable voice around the globe. Her voice with the "r" rolled in such manner that it would make your spine to vibrate, effortlessly takes you out of your realty to the place and time that have long gone but will be forever alive in her songs, "La vie en rose, "Milord," "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien," "C'est L'Amour (It's Love), and many more. "The Voice of the Sparrow: The Very Best of Edith Piaf" delivers the promises of its title, its 18 songs are among the best and most famous of Edith Piaf but they are just a little part of the singer's body of work which spans over almost 30 years and includes over 80 songs.
"The little sparrow" ,Edith Piaf sings her best hits!.......2007-06-26
This Cd has all of Edith's best known hits, sung by "the little sparrow" herself.
The re-recordings are quite excellent....well done....smooth and crisp.
The songs are well chosen and nicely arranged in sequence.
Edith`s voice sounds as good as ever in this BEST HITS Cd.
A fantastic compilation.......2007-06-23
Edith Piaf's voice is like no others. It is husky yet brash, sultry and deep. Hearing this music takes you to another place. She was a fantastic singer with a wonderful low range a great cd.
The Voice of a Sparrow at a Bargain Price!.......2007-06-03
Edith Piaf was a tragic figure with a talent of singing often painful and sometimes happy songs. In this compact disc, there are her classics like Ma Vie en Rose, Milord, Non Je Ne Regrette Rien, and others listed here. Of course, Edith Piaf is not for everybody. She is an acquired taste that unless you are fan of French music or Edith Piaf that you may not like. Piaf's life was as tragic as some of her songs but she left in indelible legacy of her recorded music that comforted and soothed the French during World War II. Piaf's singing has to be appreciated as well. maybe you don't know French, you don't need too. You do know pain, agony, heartbreak, falling in love, loss, death, happiness, sadness, etc. then you will appreciate and love Edith Piaf.
Piaf cd.......2007-05-30

Wonderful Compilation of Edith Piaf.......2007-03-09
Such a pleasure to hear so many songs that Ms. Piaf made famous especially, "Milord", "La Vie En Rose", and "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien". A great compilation! I only wish a word booklet had been included, but you can't have everything. Ms. Piaf's voice is more than enough!
Eternelle.......2007-02-17
The songs are wonderful, Edith Piaf has a beautiful voice. The songs are sung in French, a masterpiece.
Mesmerizing and enchanting..........2002-03-26
I love this collection. It has all of my favorite songs of Edith Piaf. This one is truly a classic. You won't be dissatisfied.
The definitive single CD.......2002-02-11
EMI did a nice job of remastering these tracks, so that they are cleaner and more dynamic than ever before. This is significant since there is so much Piaf product out there from second-generation tapes/old records/etc. Including the most well-known of Piaf's songs this, then, has become the definitive single CD of her work. Highly recommended.

What a delight to hear Edith Piaf's lovely voice! Lovely songs, and it is well done.
A Good Second Piaf.......2005-10-01
Once she has won your heart, you will want this collection to hear how she developed as a performer -- and came to be a great symbol of France in the 20th Century
casual music listener.......2005-09-10
Adds depth to a music collection; sound quality of old recording makes it interesting
Pleasantly surprised.......2005-08-12
Having heard a song by Edith Piaf while watching the movie "Saving Private Ryan" and being captivated by the sound of her voice, I decided to venture into a completely new direction in my listening library. I must admit that I have not been able to take this CD out of any player that happens to be around me! Even though I have no idea of the lyrics, Ms. Piaf has the ability to draw you in and make you feel like you understand exactly what she is saying. She is joyful, tragic, coy, sad, dramatic, and ultimately she leaves me with the feeling of her devotion to her art and her time in history.

Amazon.com essential recording
Abandoned as a baby and raised in a brothel, Piaf was dicovered singing in the streets of Paris by a club owner, who started her 30-year career during which time she became France's best-loved and best-known songstress, with major hits from beginning to end. At times singing in front of the band with no microphone, her powerful voice and emotional delivery was a striking contrast to her diminutive size. Nicknamed "the Little Sparrow," Piaf was plagued by controversy, from implications in a clubowner's death to multiple affairs (including Yves Montand and Charles Aznavour), drugs, and alcohol. Her torchy cabaret and dramatically theatrical songs eventually won her global recognition. This two-CD set covers highlights of her career up to her death in 1963, many of which are now standards. Described in France as "the greatest figure in the history of song," her voice still rings with a passion for life, something that eventually consumed her. --Derek Rath

Matthew Hit the Nail on the Head.......2006-10-02
Matthew hit the nail on the head when he wrote:
"This two CD set is highly recommended for Piaf fans (as if they didn't know that already), fans of French classic vocals and fans of international music. Thank goodness Edith Piaf shared her talents with us while she lived amongst us--fans of the arts are infinitely better off because of Piaf's substantial contributions to the arts."
The Piaf legend will live forever and should. I, too, recommend the Carnegie two-cd set. It's enthralling from start to end.
Piaf, Garland and Minnelli...the world will never see women performers like these again.
Great reveiw, Matthew!
Piaf Tonight!.......2006-10-02
This two CD set is not merely a magnificent sampling of Edith Piaf's songs; it is a celebration of her career as one of the greatest female singers the world has ever known or ever will know. The songs include many of her beloved songs recorded by Piaf between 1946 and 1963.
These wonderful French classics by Piaf include "La Vie En Rose;" "Les Trois Cloches;" "Hymne À L'amour;" "Jezebel;" "Padam Padam;" "Autumn Leaves" sung in English; "Milord;" "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien;" and "Les Amants De Paris." There are, of course, many more wonderful songs--all with beautiful musical arrangements--on this two CD set. There are even two unedited songs that show how Piaf worked on a song before it was polished: "Légende" and "Un Dimanche À Londres."
While almost all of the remastering is excellent, a few songs were not done to completion. For example, "Hymne À L'amour" on the first CD is obviously simply recorded from an old 78 rpm record complete with surface noise and scratches; and "L'homme De Berlin" sounds as if someone was holding tissues in front of the microphone in order to create a muffled reproduction of the recording. However, this is a minor disappointment because the rest of the package is so perfect.
The liner notes offer an excellent essay about Piaf's life written in both English and French. There are several photos of Edith Piaf and two of them are colorized for effect. The liner notes also provide songs credits and the year each song was recorded.
Piaf recorded much, much more than these two CDs could ever hope to cover simply because her career spanned so many years; if you like this set I strongly recommend other Piaf CD recordings including her performances at Carnegie Hall in 1956 and 1957. This two CD set is really best viewed as either a thorough introduction to Piaf or as a very good retrospective of her career including most of her greatest songs.
This two CD set is highly recommended for Piaf fans (as if they didn't know that already), fans of French classic vocals and fans of international music. Thank goodness Edith Piaf shared her talents with us while she lived amongst us--fans of the arts are infinitely better off because of Piaf's substantial contributions to the arts.
The sad and tragical nosthalgie !.......2004-09-04
There are lives who would seem destined to burn in themselves to reach the sincere expression the hard rapport to express and moreover to feel the song and make of their special repertoire his inspiration source .
Halliday , Edith Piaf , Maria Callas ; three different styles but a common cause the loneliness , the unability to be really loved besides her mythical sphere .
In the case of Piaf the pain was so close to her that I really think Piaf adopted as his partner and she faced that awful truth . After the Marcel Chardin death you feel this twist of fate and the sense of the emptiness in every one of her themes .
La foule , Hymn a l'amour or amants d 'un jour for instance are the best proof of this sadness who seems to fly far beyond the melody and become in a permament leit motive .
Edith Piaf will be always have a very special place in the soul of all those who love without being loved , who have loved , those who still love and specially for those who consider that they just can not love anymore.
not as good as i thought it would be.......2003-01-13
I am going to be the only dissenter here. The choice of songs is excellent, and this is why i bought the CD.
However, I think that several of the selected songs must be early versions which were then fine tuned by E. Piaf over the years. I have listened to other CDs and vinyl record where renditions such as Jezebel, and La Foule where much more forceful and on a higher emotional level.
A good choice for people who have not heard the later versions of the songs, or those prefer to hear the earlier versions,

Frankly, it feels a bit weird to listen to Edith Piaf perform in English. There aren't many singers so associated with a country as Piaf is with France. And yet she did record some of her hits in English in an attempt to facilitate her career in the United States. While newcomers to the singer's oeuvre should start with her French albums, this CD is fascinating for advanced Piaf listeners. Most of the sides were cut 1950 and show Piaf in fine vocal form on tracks such as "La vie en rose" (she switched from English to French for the title) and "Autumn Leaves" ("Les feuilles mortes"), a strangely compelling hybrid that alternates between French and English. Piaf was certainly more at ease singing in French, but her charismatic sense of drama could break through in just about any language. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:
Huge surprise!.......2007-05-12
What an unbelievable surprise - and joy - to discover Edith Piaf singing in English, and sometimes songs which she never sang in French! Her accent is ten times worse than mine... but the voice remains, outstanding!
Better in French.......2007-01-06
I think Edith Piaf was one of the world's great chanteuses. However, she loses a lot in translation. Whereas her songs in French are effective, touching and powerful, in English they are somewhat bland. Perhaps this has to do with the translations which almost always water down the French. Perhaps it is because her command of English is not great. In any case, for the REAL Piaf, buy anything she recorded in French--you will be transported.
Handy reference for lyric meanings in English.......2005-12-13
This is a nice enough album. I think she sounds a lot nicer in French, but some of these songs are fun, and if you have enjoyed some of her original music and been curious what they might mean in English, this is one way to get a sense of them. Of course, it would be nicer if all the albums came with liner pages of lyrics but they don't. (Edith Piaf sings clearly enough in French that even an amateur language scholar can try to follow the songs by ear however.) I bought this album when I bought "The Voice of the Sparrow," and while I like that one a lot better, and can listen to it more, this one is handy to have. If you do like lyrics in translation, you might also like to check out the music of Joni James and Nana Mouskoura. Their voices are very different from hers, but the multi-lingual aspect is fun.

This Piaf collection is the best. While in Paris I was able to visit her gravesite in a famous Paris cemetery. Once the wealthiest woman singer in the world she died a pauper.
very nice collection.......2007-01-10
I purchased this for my father, who is 76 years old. It moved him deeply to hear so many of these songs from his past. It was especially nice that there were songs in this collection that he hadn't even heard before. I am very pleased with this purchase.

The Dresden Dolls - LOVE 'EM!!.......2007-01-27
I don't usually like music with voices and words; I much prefer to listen to instrumentals and not have to concentrate on anything but the tune itself; words usually just get in the way of a good listening experience. *However*, all that changed as I was driving home from work the other afternoon, listening to a segment on NPR devoted to how up-and-coming bands have to spend so much time marketing themselves and paying out money to do so, that they don't have as much valuable time to devote to their songwriting as they would like or need. They spotlighted The Dresden Dolls and played excerpts. And I love them! I love the songs! The edginess, the words, the melody, Amanda Palmer's piano and voice (which by the way, can be soft & sweet or totally in your face). There's only 2 of them: Amanda Palmer on piano and Brian Viglione on drums - add the words and melody, and that's all you need for a great band! This particular CD has two of my favorites on it: "Missed Me" and "Coin-Operated Boy". Now I find myself singing along to the songs whenever I play them in the car (when did I start doing that??). I'll be buying all their other CDs, and singing along to them as well!
Dresden Dolls.......2007-01-12
The album has a few really good tracks, but overall it could use more variety.
wow this band rocks .......2007-01-12
do you ever get bored with bands sounding the same or the tired old crappy radio. you must pick up this cd. you will not dissapointed. I was surfing roadrunner records for some songs, i happen to stumble apond d.d. and i loved them from the start cause to me i never heard such type of music. im used ot bands like slipknot, rage against the machine, hatebread, audioslave, lamb of god, Crisis, ect. the best song has to coin operated boy.
I'm Not Sadistic!.......2006-09-20
Hello all. This review is to help you decide whether or not you want this album, right? Well. i have to tell you, you're stupid if you don't buy it. but apparently. you need more than just an insult to convince you. so....On with the show. I'll rate the songs by tracks. But First, what you have to realize about the Dresden Dolls, is that their is only 2 members. Amanda is piano/keyboard/toy piano/Vox, and Brian is percussion/drums/guitar/vox. Their sound is VERY UNIQUE, there is no other sound like them. It's a mix of Punk/Cabaret/Rock. Now, you may think that if it's only got a keyboard and drums, then it can't be rock. it can't be viscious, it can't be head-bangingly beautiful. You're wrong.
1. Good Day-4.5/5-Starts slow, but gets into it halfway through.Catchy chorus. Great opener track to ease you in to what they call "Punk Cabaret"!
2. Girl Anachronism-5/5-My favorite track on this album, hands down. The lyrics alone are incredible. but the dueling piano and drums gets to be too much to handle, it's that good. I find myself singing it at work, and i head-bang during the first minute while driving. Kinda hard to do, but...
3.Missed Me-4.0/5-A Great song about pedophilism. It plays like a musical song. Reminds you of cabaret, but viscious. A Truly great song.Catchy tune.
4.Half Jack-5/5-This is another favorite on the album. It starts out kinda slow like "Good Day" but then gets powerful later on. Lyrics are beautifully connected to one another.
5. 672-3/5-Its a 1 1/2 minute intermission. It has few lyrics, but good piano. I'd listen to it just to get to Coin-Operated Boy.
6. Coin-Operated Boy-4.5/5-The song is about a girl who wants a coin-operated boy, to "play" with. So she won't be alone. it's romantic really. It was the first song i heard by the Dolls. It gets sorta old after you hear it a zillion times.
7. Gravity-5/5-Another great track. Great lyrics. AWESOME CHORUS! I see myself cruisin on the countryside, hand out the window. just chillin' with this song. A+
8. Bad Habit-4.5/5-Fast paced and great. One of the better songs on this album.
9. Perfect Fit-4.5/5-This is the one of those songs you skip because it's slow, but later realize, it's truly an important part of the album. You want to scream the lyrics at the end. Very catchy.
10. Jeep Song-4.5/5-This song is hilarious. It's a nearly 5-minute song about how all she sees are Jeep Cherokees in town. How she'll "skip Town till the cars go out of style". It's very funny, and great instrumental accompanyment.
11. Slide-5/5-This song is the CREEPIEST thing i've ever heard. It's about this orange man,(maybe an escaped convict?or...*correct me if i'm wrong) who's going to kidnap a "red little girl" from a slide. At the very end when she's screams "The Orange Man's Got You!" I freaked out (i'm driving by the way), and got a little disoriented, because it sent chills all over my body. Pedophilism. Only Dresden can do a song, and make it stick.
12. Truce-3.5/5-This is the 9-minute epic on the album, and the last track. It's tune you can't get into for very long as it changes constantly. But the Violin solo at the end is mind-blowing. "You can fake it for the papers, but i'm on to you, i'm on to you!"
And then when you thought it was over you hear Amanda's mother or grandmother i'm guessing. "Amanda...You're telling me a fairytale."
Then that's it. A Great Album! Listen to the samples on Amazon. They really do help. Rate MY REVIEW! It's mY FIRST!
And no one cares if your back is bleeding.......2006-08-18
My introduction to The Dresden Dolls came in the form of Yes, Virginia... That CD blew me away and I expected nothing less from this, their self titled release. This CD doesn't pack as hard of a punch as Virginia does but it's there, and it's as swift as can be. The lyrics aren't as controversial and comical as they are on Virginia, yet there's still room for controversy with Missed Me and Coin-Operated Boy. The one thing that is completely the same as Virginia is the fact that Amanda and Brian sound amazing playing off of each other, and Amanda's vocal adventures from song to song are fascinating to listen to.
Beginning this CD with Good Day was by far the best choice. After a slow and quiet intro Amanda churns out the eery sounding lyric "So, you don't wanna hear about my good song?" From then on this CD is just one big rollercoaster ride. Driving piano/drum combos, soft piano laced songs, mid tempo sing alongs, everything is here. But that doesn't mean everyone will love this release, and The Dresden Dolls for that matter. This band is over the top a lot of the time, and I think that's what they go for. So if you can't deal with that then don't even bother.
The Dresden Dolls (CD, not the band) is an achievement upon itself. In this age, when I thought everything has been done musically, a CD like this comes along and just takes you for a trip. It's not traditional, you don't know what to expect, and that's the way music is supposed to be. Bands don't create music that breathes new life into you often enough nowadays. The Dresden Dolls do just that, breathe new life into you musically. Through and through, this is one of the most solid CDs I've heard recently. Every song is completely different from the last, and the creativity is outright.
My Favorite songs are Good Day, Half Jack, Gravity, The Perfect Fit, and Slide. The Dresden Dolls have proven to be in a league by themselves. No one puts out this kind of music nowadays and it's unlikely that anyone will. Basically, as far as debuts go (I think this is a debut at least), it's near perfection. I love every second and enjoy myself thoroughly everytime I hear it. So if you haven't heard The Dresden Dolls yet, the band and the album, you should be ashamed of yourself.

Cheated out of playing nightclub canary Sally Bowles on Broadway in director Hal Price's Cabaret, Liza Minnelli nevertheless delivered an Oscar-winning star turn in Bob Fosse's cinematic reinvention of the show (which had the good sense to retain perverse imp Joel Grey from the stage production). Although the 1972 film discarded several songs from the original score, the new ones sound even better: Minnelli's breast-beating "Maybe This Time," the sultry "Mein Herr," and the salaciously satirical "Money, Money." By placing almost all the pertinent musical action on the stage of the decadent Kit Kit Club, the Kurt Weill-like compositional nuances and political underpinnings bask in the spotlight...that is, when Minnelli stops eclipsing it with her no-holds-barred performance. --Kurt B. Reighley

A Different Interpretation of Cabaret.......2006-07-31
It really bothered me that a review below stated that Liza Minnelli wasn't Sally Bowles and that the song "Cabaret" is about Sally being upset that she lost her true love and that its about Sally coming to the realization that she is stuck in the awful cabaret.
Well, with all due respect, this is wrong. The reviewer probably got that idea by listening to Natasha Richardson sing "Cabaret" and believed that because Sally is crying, she must realize that she lost everything and that she is stuck in some god awful place. Well, the song "Cabaret" is really about Sally's desperate attempt to convince herself that everything is normal, that everything will remain the same. Sally is in deep denial and believes that her life will always be full of decadence, glitz, parties, and fun even as Germany falls under the control of the Nazi party.
However, one must keep in mind that Liza's Sally Bowles and Natasha Richardson's Sally Bowles are two very different interpretations. Liza was almost a decade younger than Natasha Richardson when she played Sally Bowles (Liza was about 26 and Natasha was about 35 when they tackled the roles of Sally). Because of this Liza's Sally is more young and naive and when she is singing "Cabaret" she honestly does believe that everything will be okay. This does not leave the viewer with a happy feeling as one reviewer said, it leaves us feeling sad and a scared for Sally because we know what the future holds in store for her and for Germany.
However, Natasha Richardson's Sally is older and less naive. Because of this, when she sings "Cabaret" she has to make herself believe in what she is singing. She has to make herself believe that everything will return to normal and that she will continue living the way she does no matter what happens. That's the difference: Liza believes that everything will be okay, while Natasha has to tell herself that everything will be okay, even though deep down she knows that's probably not true.
Love this album.......2006-07-07
Just got a new CD player for car and this is one of the first albums I had to have on CD. Now all I need is "Two Ladies".
Viva La Diva.......2005-05-16
After reading all of the reviews where everyone blasts Liza Minnelli, and how this was a vehicle for her talents...I think they forget that she was originally desired for the role of Sally Bowles in the first place, and was considered too American. Yes, one cannot deny this is Judy Garland's daughter. Every actor/actress has one or two roles that define perfection...and in this case (as much as I hate to admit) this is Liza's. Ripping apart the "love triangle" and comparing it to the broadway musical, you are forgetting to the heart of this production in the first place: the stories written by Christopher Isherwood, and that is exactly what Fosse did in his desire to return to the original inspiration. Sexuality couldn't be mentioned in 1966 as something realistic or even a possibility. But blooming homosexuality/bisexuality was VERY prelevent in Weimar Berlin (it is even alluded to in the silent German classic: Pandora's Box, with Louise Brooks, which has modern cinema's first lesbian and remember, in Frankfurt there was a center for Studies on Human Sexuality that as early as 1925 said that homosexuality was natural...one of the first places to be destroyed by fascism and Hitler) and to me, that is why the story line and these songs work...it is realistic and also very true to Isherwood's stories. So if anything, blame the stage musical for glossing over the truth...not the film. Obvious critics also blast the cutting out of a lot of the original tracks, which again works because the story line has changed. Why include tracks of Sally's landlady singing about her love for a Jewish fruit vendor if it isn't even alluded to in the film?
Every track on this disc, makes you wish you could actually go to a Cabaret and see girls kicking up their heels...like the Cabaret girls did in the film. Joel Grey is priceless as the Emcee, a role he created and played to perfection. He is every bit as sleazy as the character on broadway, and even more so because the performance shows how the rise of nazism affected what was going on inside of the cabaret, and that slimy weasel just smiled and welcomed it into the performances. Both broadway and film versions are perfect in their own right.
One reviewer seems perplexed by the track "Tomorrow Belongs To Me" and where it fits. Hitler youth were groomed as aryan perfection, and the youth encouraged patriotism (be it false or not) amongst the Germans at a time when they were coming out of a depression. It is creepy watching the scene in the film, and even hearing it on the soundtrack, as it does stand out...the youth were persuasive and doing what they had been brainwashed to do: convince and create a hate filled patriotism. What is even creepier, is that "Cabaret" is written by persons of Jewish faith, and modern right wing and nazi/aryan groups have adopted "Tomorrow Belongs To Me" to sing at their rallies, and even skinhead punk bands (such as Skrewdriver) have covered the song as a tribute to their "perfect race", funny how a song that fuels the fire of their hatred is written by 2 jewish people (something I think they have forgotten) who are obviously of an "inferior race" (according to what nazism preaches)...(whats wrong here, couldn't the continuing people of anti-semitism and "white power" write their own track? ooh how hypocrisy is pathetic!) judging by their last names, so listening to this track is extremely disturbing on many social levels for this very reason today as it is presented in the film.
The opening track "Wilkommen"...wow what a way to open a show and get the juices flowing, informing everyone present that leaving your troubles behind and tasting some burlesque is a fabulous idea...and why not kick up your heels?
"Mein Herr" is one of the best tracks on the soundtrack, and remembering the sexy Fosse choreography makes it even more enjoyable. Performed in the film, it is intimate as if you are seeing the show first row. Yes, it works.
"Maybe This Time" Yes, this is obviously a Liza signature. But it does reflect Sally's character and her feelings of hope, that someone will believe in her and perhaps even love her, and making her feel worthy.
"Two Ladies" is obviously priceless.
The album does shortchange you in the fact that you aren't seeing it performed, but it gives you something else: the ability to remember what was going on. Remember, Fosse created this format into a "Concept" musical, and if the film is to be called "Cabaret" then gosh darnit, shouldn't the music be represented there?
This is a timeless classic.
Huge Improvement from the Original Score.......2004-07-16
Even though "Cabaret" is DEFINATELY my favorite musical, I have to say the movie version is my favorite recording. Yes Lotte Lenya and Joel Grey were excellent in the original recording, there were some pretty so-so songs that didn't stand out as the ones on this soundtrack do. First of all, the movie version of "Cabaret" was NOT the Broadway version. The only songs taken from the original are "Wilkommen", "Money, Money", "Two Ladies", a translated version of "Married and the concluding title track. Two new Bob Fosse tunes are included which spruce up the score: the sultry "Mein Herr" and the unforgettable "Maybe This Time" performed FLAWLESSLY by Minnelli. Another original tune is the delightful yet disturbing "If You Could See Her" by Joel Grey. Overall as I said earlier this is my favorite recording as it's the best vocally. The instrumentals are also incredible and are an improvement over the Broadway. Granted, classics like "Don't Tell Mama", "So What" and "Perfectly Marvelous" were omitted, but who cares? Fosse, Minnelli and Grey make this show their own. "Cabaret" will always remain my favorite musical and the movie soundtrack my favorite recording. A+
Legendary...........2004-03-30
This movie picked up 8 Academy awards, including a best actress award for Liza Minnelli and a best supporting actor for Joel Grey. We follow a night club singer called Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli) who struggles to make a living as a performer in the 1930's Berlin under world war two. Sally seems happy and unsually bored until one day a man walks into her life...little did she know that the man would change her life forever as it seems...Life is a cabaret, old chum...come to the cabaret.
Willkommen 5/5
The opening act brilliantly performed by the master of command, Joel Grey's performance is strange, gothic and weird but it always comes off strong and vital as Joel himself.
Mein Herr 5/5
Liza Minnelli's first song, it's ferious, fearless groundbreaking and stunning, it has a great beat and Liza shines both with voice and with her dancing act, the song perfectly represents what Sally Bowles is all about.
Maybe This Time 4.5/5
What many people didn't know is that Liza has actually been singing this song since 1964, nonthelss it's melancholic and Liza Minnelli's performance is vital, strong and it remains a Liza Minnelli classic...Maybe this time....who knows?........
Money, Money 5/5
A fine duet between Joel Grey and Liza Minnelli, the song is fun, quirky and sataric, both Joel and Liza are perfect, Joel's growling vocal perfectly suits Liza's crystal clear multi-faceted singing, one of the best songs on the album.
Two Ladies 4.5/5
Another song performed solo by the ecclectric master of command, the fantastic Joel Grey. The song itself is fun, loving and very vulgar, but in a fun way. Joel Grey is outstanding and is obviously one of the biggest Broadway performers of out time...Two ladies...what a fantasy...??...
Sitting Pretty 4/5
A fine instrumental number, but what I don't understand is why Bob Fosse chose to leave out so many songs that is vital for the shows total running time...So What was a song that needed to be executed, Lotta Lenya's performance were ecclectric.
Tomorrow Belong To Me 2.5/5
This song gives me the shivers...it's strangely nationalized and it has a very scary mood and feeling about it, the one song that don't fit in with "Cabaret", it's strange and give me the shivers every time I hear it...how strange!!!...maybe not?..
Tiller Girls 4/5
Another instrumental song (the second and last) instrumental tune, again I still can't comprehend why there were so many vital songs cut out from this movie, but for anyone who hasn't seen the Lotta Lenya original Broadway production of Cabaret they won't miss a thing, I'm confounded. Still good though.
Heiraten (Married) 4.5/5
A great German song about the struggles of the married life, the song is beautifully performed, I can just imagine Marlene Dietrich, Zara Leander or Lenya performing this tune, it's simply great...same year Liza performed this song in english in her Tony award winning show called "Liza With A Z".
If You Could See Her 5/5
WoW this song really sturred something deep inside me, Joel is allegedly singing about his love for a jew and not the Orangutang his performing with, listen carefully and You'll the deeper message within the meaning of the song. Legendary.
Cabaret 5/5
WOW Liza Minnelli's classic act, her performance is forceful, prowess, ravingly stunning, legendary, shadowing, and one of the most memorable tunes ever performed by anyone, no wonder why Liza won a Academy award for best actress. Liza Minnelli is a legend and she truly deserves the title of one.
Finale 5/5
The ending song summons up the whole show, it's emotional and it will promtly remind You just how great Cabaret was, Liza Minnelli, Joel Grey, Michael York all performed with such a powerful and forceful energy that it will be remembered for a very long time, Cabaret was the last succesful musical movie, up until the release of the wonderful "Mounlin Rouge" and some years later "Chicago". A lost genre, it's truly sad.

It's hard to resist a singer who fully indulges her sexual obsessions on CD, especially when they involve songs about transsexuals and--to paraphrase a bit--girls who leave out used condoms on their bedroom dressers to make their boyfriends jealous. And that's just Amanda Palmer in her tamer moments. As the mouthpiece for the carnival-like Dresden Dolls, she certainly knows how to scintillate. The Boston cabaret-punk duo's second album is a no-holds-barred affair that sees her singing about Nazi sympathizers ("Mrs. O") and bedroom antics ("First Orgasm") with equal zest, while the music she bangs out with drummer Brian Viglione fits the very definition of perverse. For some, it's the soundtrack to a kabuki-faced nightmare; for others, the stuff of strangely captivating dreams. --Aidin Vaziri

A Little Late to Review this.........2007-04-17
I hoped onto the Dresden Dolls Bandwagon rather randomly... wow, MySpace isn't a total waste of time! Anyway, I started of the Self Titled one, and enjoyed it enough to eventually purchase this disk, which is great leap forward in my opinion. This disk rarely left my player for weeks! I can't say much about the Dresden Dolls that likely hasn't been said already. I love the interplay between Amanda & Brian... a seamless marriage of instruments that truly compliment and contrast in very pleasing, exciting ways. I look forward eagerly to their next effort. My faves are BackStabber, Delilah, Dirty Business, Mrs.O, Shores of California, and Sing, but most of this disk is great, I think.
Deep........2007-04-15
The Dresden Dolls are unique... they have a really deep lyric base, paired with strong hits to the piano and light to heavy vocals. It is a rather cool mixture of everything from dark to light, and soft and loud. Each song is totally different and overall this in my opinion an awesome album!
Worthwhile.......2007-03-25
This disk is competently done -- good melodies, quality instrumentation/playing, gutsy and dynamic singing. The lyrics are interesting, off the beaten path... definitely worth a listen for those who enjoy, say, Rasputina (although I think that Rasp. is superior).
Some good moments, some not so good.......2007-02-06
I can see why people like this music - it's better than a lot of what's out there. But personally I think they need to introduce more players in their band, more instruments. The vocalist does not have enough in her arsenal to carry the outfit with just a piano and drums, and the eccentricity is sometimes forced and abraisive to the point of being annoying. There are good moments, which other reviewers are not shy of pointing out, but there are some that just make you want to slap the singer.
Absolutely amazing album.......2007-01-17
This album forges on from their first "The Dresden Dolls" with a more cohesive collection of songs. My favorite on here is the haunting "Delilah" which inspires different imagnined tableaus on each re-listen. The lyric, "he's going to beat you like a pillow" reverberates in my mind. The lead-in of "My Alcoholic Friends" gives a dizzying shift from darkly humorous pain to torturous empathy. Best album of the year.

Taking the cue for its visual conception from sources as diverse as British cartoonist Gerald Scarfe and the antic, rubbery surrealism of Tex Avery's Warner Bros. Cartoons of the 30's, this madcap caper from French writer/director Sylvain Chomet is one of the most delightfully skewed animated films in recent memory. Scoring such a thorough original is no easy task, but composer/musician Benoit Charest has more than risen to the occasion. Charest manages to evoke the loopy musical spirit of legendary Warner and Disney animation legend Carl Stalling in an entirely new context, fusing the score's snappy, predominantly le hot jazz mindset with everything from hip-hop and Bach (credited her as "Jean Sebastien") to the Italian opera farrago "Cieco Cieco Barber" and 1960s proto-surf-rock of "Pa Pa Pa Palavas." But that conceptual stew isn't the least of Charest's delightful surprises, as he giddily infuses it with his own Django-esque guitar stylings and a hodge-podge of "found" rhythmic instruments that include bicycle wheels, refrigerator shelves and a vacuum cleaner; surely there must be a kitchen sink buried in the mix somewhere. The result is a score that uses tradition as but a launching pad for one of the most rewarding and delightfully original animated scores in recent memory. -- Jerry McCulley

Top notch film.......2007-05-07
I always know a film is great when I replay scenes in my mind and view the world through the lens of the film for many days later. The animation was terrific. The scenes were artistic in their rendering and the limited dialogue was true to the tradition of European animation. The sound track has kept me humming and singing the tunes ever since. Definitely five stars in my book.

Wonderful movie...the music was outstanding and the characters believable. The animation was like watching a well drawn picture come to life.
I would recommend this to anyone that enjoys seeing the fruits of very creative people.

If you haven't seen the movie, I would advise you do - it's one of the best animated films to come out in a long while, and a fine example that traditional methods of animation are not dead. If you haven't, then one thing you should know is that barely any of it is told in words - therefore, the soundtrack became very important, and what we got was one heck of a soundtrack.
Listening to it alone, I'm immediately reminded of the soundtrack for the Japanese film "Metropolis," which is heavy in jazz. The main theme (presented in both English and French) is the finest example of this, and has to be one of the catchiest themes I've ever heard. (took a month just to get the dang thing out of my head) You'll find several versions of it on this CD, some in its pure form (including a "demo" version) and in its use as background music. But don't worry, there's more than that. You've got stand-on-their-own tracks including "Attila Marcel," (which made me feel like an American soldier in a 1940's French cafe) the two versions of the French mafia theme, a piano version of a Bach piece, and the lighthearted "Cieco Cieco Barber."
Overall the soundtrack is well worth the purchase. If you enjoyed the movie, by all means add this to your collection as soon as possible.

This a terrible story - boring at best. I am sorry I wasted my time watching it.
Delicious!.......2005-05-08
As well as the animated movie, the soundtrack is just wonderful. From the Oscar nominated "Belleville Rendez-vous" (versions in French and English by M) to Madame Souza's horrible performance (which is not listed, but you can listen after the last song), a CD you have to own!
