Company ... In Jazz
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Stephen Sondheim music without lyrics? Sacrilege! Actually, while it's true that "Another Hundred People" without its frenetic words ends up more relaxed than it has any right to be (never mind "Getting Married Today," which isn't even attempted), Terry Trotter's jazz arrangements of Sondheim's shows are extremely tasteful and a pleasure to listen to. In this recasting of the groundbreaking Company, the trio brings out the lovely lyric lines of "Sorry-Grateful" and "Barcelona," while "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" ends up as straight-ahead bebop with Lanny Morgan making a guest appearance on alto sax. This recording is extremely easy on the ear, especially without the original recording's trademark '70s organ sound, but to call it "easy listening" would seem an injustice. --David Horiuchi

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Broadway Divas.......2007-01-22
Wonderful selection of classic singers and songs. Special favorites are Ethel Merman and Barbara Cook.
Love the choices.......2006-08-11
This is great. Anything with Ethel, Bernadette, Barbara (both of them), Mary, and Marin is beyond words. Any one of them by themselves is awesome but these ladies together are mind blowing. All of the women sound amazing but they made a mistake on the list of songs and composers. "Raise the Roof" sung by Julia Murney (I love her)was written by Andrew Lippa, not LaChusia.
coulda been a contender.......2006-03-15
The divas are indeed divine, but the choice of music sung left me wondering why, with so many other great music selection contenders.
Two words: Julia Murney.......2001-09-03
OK, so it sounds crazy to review an album with Ethel Merman and Bernadette Peters on it and not mention them. But...tough. I've read enough about them to know how good they are.
Buy this album as a token of love to the producer who had the cajones to put Julia Murney on an album celebrating the last 100 years of Broadway divas.
Because SHE is one of the greatest voices of the decade!

So-so? Why so-so?.......2000-07-18
It's reviews like these that make me wonder if I have the stuff, so to speak, to be a critic. A huge Sondheim fan, and an unabashed admirer of the Trotter Trio's ...In Jazz series (especially Passion . . . in Jazz and Star Wars . . .in Jazz)I can still not clarify exactly what it is about this disc that I don't like. Now, don't get me wrong, it's certainly worthwhile for the Sondheim enthusiast. As always, the Trio's musicianship is solid and the song selection is well-thought out. The music itself, it would seem, would also make for an excellent jazz CD. So why does this one leave me a little cold?
I'm not sure, but something in the arrangements, whether it's too much faithfulness to the originals (a trait that Passion . . . in Jazz most definitely did not have) or something else that my untrained-in-Jazz ears cannot discern, something is indeed missing from this disc. For Sondheim or Company fanatics - a must have, of course. For the curious - I'd pass

With In Good Company, tenor Lee Lessack gets a little help from his friends. All 17 tracks are duets, with well-known voices such as Maureen McGovern ("If You Go Away") and Michael Feinstein ("May I Suggest"). He also invites some singer-composers to duet on their own songs, such as Ann Hampton Callaway (on her own "Bring Back Romance"), Amanda McBroom ("The Rose"), Susan Werner ("Blue Guitar"), Stephen Schwartz (Wicked's "For Good"), and Johnny Rodgers ("Here's to You"), who also coproduced with Lessack and directs the band from the piano. And of course frequent collaborator Joanne O'Brien makes a welcome appearance on "Summer Wine." The overall mood is quite mellow, but also incorporates songs that wouldn't normally be associated with cabaret, such as Journey's "Open Arms" (with Brian Lane Green) and Shawn Colvin's "Never Saw Blue Like That" (with Mary Jo Mundy). --David Horiuchi
Album Description
"In Good Company" features veteran crooner Lee Lessack, dueting with everyone from Tony Award nominee Maureen McGovern to Michael Feinstein and Grammy award winner Stephen Schwartz, whose latest songwriting triumph is "Wicked," the runaway Broadway hit. All together, 17 of theworld's top Broadway and cabaret attractions are featured on "In Good Company." The recording is a collection of love songs with a Norah Jones smooth jazz feel.
Customer Reviews:
Schlock-Schmaltz.......2006-10-30
An album of anodyne wallpaper-drivel: hypermanufactured in every worst sense. Fine, there's nothing wrong with the songs; it's just that all colour has been cloyingly bleached out of them. Tempi are uniformly slow, accompaniments, saccharine-coated, and the lyrics so indulgently mauled as to render them ironically sterile. What persuaded first-class musicians like Stephen Schwartz to have anything to do with this tedious project? Even the booklet looks like a second-rate ad promotion for a hotel chain. 'In Good Company?' Frankly, I'd rather be in on my own.
A Great Voice Joined By Others.......2006-04-19
Perfect Blend of Voice, Song, and Performance!
I discovered this CD on a CD store feature wall and by the third clip I knew it was great. Three elements combine to make this CD outstanding. First, Lessack's baritone voice features warm, rich sound while maintaining the ability to float, never over-singing. Second, the CD possesses an exemplary collection of songs. The two recently written songs, "Sweet Mystery" and "Here's to You," match the quality of the more familiar selections. Third, Lessack's choice of duet partners in relation to the selected songs is perfect. Each partner adds to the specific song on which they join Lessack. For example, Brian Lane Green's vocals on the Journey rock ballad "Open Arms" lend the song authenticity. Nita Whitaker's vocals on "First Time Ever I Saw..." blend perfectly with Lessack's and capture the lyric's essential warmth. The addition of different duet partners for each selection make each song on the CD unique, yet the album maintains a beautiful coherence. Other stand out tracks include: "The Look of Love," "Never Saw Blue Like That," "For Good," "Let It Be Me," "The Rose," and "May I Suggest." This is the best CD I've purchased in several months. It deserves a wide audience.
Lee Lesseck - In Good Company.......2005-09-17
Up until a few days ago I had never heard of Lee Lesseck. Now that I have I have discovered a great voice and one that I will enjoy listening to for a very long time. This is a smashing CD and one that I highly recommend to lovers of great songs, beautifully sung in a very unique and special way. Lee has linked up with other great singers, like Nita Whitaker, Brian Lane Green, Maureen McGovern and Michael Feinstein to name but a few from a list of 17 performers he sings with on this CD. Each singer not only compliments his voice but bring a dimension of sound and music not found on other CD's of this genre. I could name my favorite tracks but as they change with each hearing, I won't. Just buy it, enjoy it and pass the word. Lee Lesseck and "In Good Company" is a must for any lovers of great songs and great music. 5 Stars all the way.
"Good" is an understatement.......2005-09-13
On his new CD, Lee Lessack finds himself in phenomenal company. And this, from someone who was a little less than thrilled with the idea of a CD of duets -- I didn't really want Lee to have to share songs with other singers -- I wanted another CD of "pure Lee." I should have known that my reservations were unfounded. I know that when Lee Lessack does anything, it's done flawlessly, and this CD is certainly no exception.
Lee's voice -- which I personally think is currently the best male voice in any genre -- sounds wonderful, and blends amazingly with all seventeen of his duet partners. The roster of names that sing with him is almost as ecclectic as the list of song choices, but all combined, with Johnny Rodgers' wonderful arrangements, the CD is truly a masterpiece.
I could rave about every single song, but I'll limit myself to my very favorites, which are the a-MA-zing "Never Saw Blue Like That" with Mary Jo Mundy, "Sweet Mystery" with Jon Philip Alman, a surprisingly wonderful revisiting of "Bring Back Romance" with Ann Hampton Callaway, "Vincero Perdero" with Franc D'Ambrosio, "For Good" with Stephen Schwartz, and "Vincent" with Ken Page.
This is definitely a must-have CD.
In a Good Mood. . . .......2005-08-31
. . .that's what In Good Co. does for me.
Lee knows how to read a song and he knows how to pick singers that blend so well.
A great journey this album, so exciting to hear so many accomplished singers and songwriters. The duet with Paige is pure gold. A take on "open arms" that will open anyones heart. "sweet mystery" with Alman is a highlight- the two voices and the beautiful song, unmatched

Album Description
The album "With You In Mind" reaches John Adams' broadest audience, as he delivers a dynamic new hybrid of pop and jazz standards, along with three stunning originals. A fertile, rhythmic structure is overlaid with inspired cameos, including Eric Marienthal's (recording artist, and formerly with Chick Corea) passionate saxophone, James Kings' soulful vocals, and Mitch Watkins' intricate guitar work. The contributions of Piper (studiowriter/producer) and McCurley (of Kirk Whalum, Joe McBride, Rick Braun, et.al.) are also prominently displayed. Adams' bass work here conveys a rare breadth of abilities, from bowed acoustic bass, and soaring midi-bass melodies, to powerful electric solos, and rock-solid grooves.

In the Company of Friends.......2006-03-09
Denise Donatelli is my daughter's godmother and she was born and raised in Allentown, PA where I live. We were good friends for a long time and I just had to buy her cd. She has an excellent voice and is now living in Hollywood California. If you like jazz buy this cd.
Another very impressive debut.......2005-10-04
My attention to this album, by an artist with whom I was totally unfamiliar, was drawn by raves on the cover and in the liner notes from Tom Scott, Phil Woods and Mark Murphy. If these guys rave, this artist must be sensational, right?
My verdict: in time, she really could be. For now, this is a very impressive debut album.
As with many debut albums by jazz chanteusses, Ms. Donatelli has chosen the relatively safe route of sticking with the Great American Songbook. Not entirely, though: the one original, Tom Garvin (p.)'s "A Roarin' Borin' Alice" is probably the highlight of the album. As you might guess from that title, the song is hilarious, reminiscent of Jon Hendricks' "Gimme That Wine" or Mose Allison's "Your Mind's On Vacation".
But what sets this album apart from most vocal jazz debut albums are the charts. We have some unique stuff here: "On Green Dolphin Street" done in 5/4 time; "You Don't Know What Love Is" recast to a rhumba beat; "Dream Dancing" done to a samba beat; and a cool scat in unison with the horns on "This Is New." The album as a whole is very well recorded, with nice balance between the horns and the rhythm section.
As for Ms. Donatelli, she doesn't have a particularly big or rich voice; but she has a very pleasing, sensual tone, and her phrasings and intonation are as good as most seasoned old pros. If I had a constructive critique to make, it is that at the end of some phrases, her voice cuts into a wide vibrato that is somewhat distracting. I think that could be fixed with a good vocal coach, however.
The album strikes me at a 4-5 range. I give it a 5, because I've heard a lot of really good jazz singers over the years improve from a very promising starting point. I look forward to Ms. Donatelli doing the same, and encouragement is a good thing. RC

Customer Reviews:
Silence please!.......2006-08-30
My only reason for buying this CD is the track 4:33 by Frank Zappa. 4:33 minutes of total silence, well almost total silence because you can hear a little background noices in the control room of Frank. It is a very interesting cd. But if you are not a fan of Zappa or Cage, and you like to hear music I say: buy something else. If you are ready for an experiment: buy this one or the CD Roaratorio.
Georgia Stone the best antiwar composition to date.......2002-12-15
The whole collection is interesting. However, the great moment of this collection is the Ono contribution Georgia Stone. It's a fluxus symphony. Never have I heard a more poignant antiwar piece. It rates in power and beauty to Henryk Gorecki's Symphony #3 with soprano Dawn Upshaw. If anyone ever doubted the genius of Yoko Ono as being relevant and an artist of the highest calibre then listen to this masterpiece and you'll be jolted into her energy as an artist. Yoko, give us more of this kind of music.
unknown..but i'm real excited.......2001-06-05
Jspark wrote a review that totally grabbed my intrest..I did my senior art history project on John Cage..using random sheets of paper for the lecture. the idea of hitting the "random button" is a great idea..and the idea of running two disks at once is even neater..being a big fan of just about everybody on the cd..especially Laurie Anderson doesnt hurt either... I haven't heard it yet, but i think i'll be sticking with the 5 star rating.
What? 183 tracks? What for? There is a reason..........1999-08-03
It might be bewildering at first. The first disc has 98 tracks; the second, 85. If you listen straight through, you do not perceive any discontinuity. A collection of John Cage pieces performed by friends, collegues, and admirers. Frank Zappa (American composer [complete biographical blurb that he provided]) contributed 4'33". Laurie Anderson tells a few Merce Cunningham tales. Seems like a fun tribute from the git-go. But wait! (And this is where the fun begins!) Switch your CD player to the shuffle (random) mode. Now look what happens. It goes from, say, Yoko Ono's piece to the Kronos to the Moraz prepared piano performance to Ken Nordine's narration - all in the matter of seconds. It is a great to homage to Cage himself with the great use of the random chance operations that he might have enjoyed. Every performance of this disc becomes a unique experience (just like Cage). For even more fun, try playing both discs at the same time (provided, of course, you have the means; if not, improvise). Or add another sound source as well, like, say, the radio, or the television very low, or a tape of white noise. The possibilities are endless. I had the pleasure of trying this one day with FOUR players going on simulataneously: two with these discs, another with Miles Davis far in the background, the fourth with a disc of bird calls. It was quite a fun sound environment and I would not hesitate to try it again. But that was my experience. Your experience may be different.
