Michael John LaChiusa's First Lady Suite is a fascinating probe into some of history's most neglected figures, the wives of U.S. presidents. The title is a wordplay on the familiar presidential suite, but also a reference to the three-part structure that focuses on Jackie Kennedy, Mamie Eisenhower, and Eleanor Roosevelt as they examine what their lives have become and take a metaphorical journey from flying prison to glorious solo flight. The cast, which presented the work at Los Angeles's Blank Theatre in March 2002, is uniformly fine, and it seems unfair and unnecessary to single out any of the nine members (some playing more than one role)--even the first ladies, because in some cases their assistants are equally prominent characters. As for hummable tunes, LaChiusa's score will never be mistaken for something by Jason Robert Brown, but it's angular and jazzy, and when appropriate, it soars. Considering how many unfamiliar shows have been derailed by half-hearted recording packaging, it's a pleasure to report that First Lady Suite comes with a full libretto, cast credits, photos, and liner notes. A search for Deep Purple's "Smoke on [in] the water," brought up this title. I rate it only #1 because I could not locate the "Smoke on the Water" listing. Amazon seems to be having an indexing problem.

Great sampler of Gershwin's music.......2007-04-14

Classical music came from Europe. Jazz arose in the American deep south as a combination of multiple music genres, most noticeably black folk music and French influences. How ironic that it would take two descendants of Russian Jews to fuse the two together into a distinctly American style of music. The two composers are George and Ira Gershwin. George is the more famous of the two, but both by himself and with his sibling they composed multiple great scores of musics. Many of these have stood the test of time and are now commonly heard in the mass media; Rhapsody in Blue is the ultimate example, and it leads of this two-disc set. Other pieces were composed for operas (Porgy and Bess), Broadway shows (Funny Face), and movies. All of this and other works are found on this set. The recording is great, the sound quality is flawless and the compositions well chosen to provide 2+ hours of music. All told, a great buy for the price.

Excellent performer.......2007-03-09

This plates are wonderful. I was charmed, and when I close my eyes now, I see scenes with American in Paris or Porgy and Bess but my favorite piece of music is Rhapsody in Blue. It's more than excellent is fantastic. Jack Gibbons perfectly feels the unique tone Gershwin's music, the mixture rythms of jazz with influences of impressionists and clear and beauty melodies.
I'm fascinating.

A unique project.......2006-11-23

Gibbons' undertaking is unique: to reconstruct and then execute and record the note-for-note playing of Gershwin as documented on the composers' piano rolls, sound recordings and certain published arrangements. I agree with the reviewer who points out that the result is like a library and not a recital you sit back and listen to (or get up and dance to). In fact Gibbons does some editing of his "library" now and then, and clearly documents it in his liner notes: in some reconstructions he augments accompaniment effects and even the melodic line itself. I don't mind that at all, especially as Gibbons scrupulously accounts for such tampering in his liner notes; but it seems to me that it is in this area of "tampering" that Gibbons the artist is asserting himself...which of course undermines the "library", the "historical archive": you have to search and read a bit to find out when you're hearing only Gershwin and when you're hearing some added Gibbons. I don't mind; Gibbons is a remarkable artist in his own right, not merely an impeccable documentarian. For sheer generosity of production Gibbons' Gershwin must also be unique: 4 cd's, scholar-level liner notes (yes, you need a magnifying glass to read them), and rock-bottom bargain price.

First: this is 4 high-end produced cd's (in low-end jewel cases) for the price of 2. The liner notes of all 4 cd's are condensed in a booklet of microscopic print, so you may need to spend the savings on a magnifying glass. MONEY WELL SPENT.
Second: Jack Gibbons plays (and has recorded) the Alkan op 39 etudes (he probably plays a lot more Alkan than that). For those of you not in the know, this is to say he has world-class chops, indeed history-class (Liszt, who never played his friend Alkan, at least in public). But it's also to say that Gibbons knows how to interpret and personalize fantastically difficult piano music. For me, his Alkan op 39 is personal and passionate and real (contrast the facile and over-pedalled Hamelin and the just-the-notes-ma'me Ringeissen). An appreciation of Gibbons' Alkan is important here because while his Alkan is uniquely personal (as such music must be, no matter how hard it is to play) his Gershwin is deliberately impersonal...which is to say: no pianist, no singer would want to reproduce what Gibbons has given us in these 4 cd's, and in fact few listeners will be able to listen for long to these 4 cd's without a respite, a break , some silence, some minimal styling from somebody (anybody) else...which brings me to
Third: This is an archive, not a recital. This is a library, not a program. There is no track-by-track contrast of moods here, no track-by-track concession to easy listening, varied delight, any more than a library shelf of novels is alphabetized by authors' last names as a concession to mood or fancy or taste of the searching patron. This is the documented Gershwin in his recording mode: manic, notey, clever, "on", and never, as generations of stylists found in him, ravishing, tender, longing, sweet, glad, hopeful...person-to-person, in a word. I can listen to these cd's about half an hour at a time, max. This is Gerwhsin, not Gibbons. And this is just one side of Gershwin. He died at 38, in the summer. Brain tumor. A lot of pain.
Finally, Jack Gibbons has given the world a uniquely valuable and easily available resource. Gibbons could now do us a service by playing us some Gershwin as he feels it, as it hits him and makes him sing (as Gershwin, our American Schubert, does to all of us, and as I think Alkan has done to Gibbons). I would love to see a Gershwin stylings by Gibbons now that Gibbons himself has made sure Gershwin in his authenticity is safe and sound.

Here's the whole Gershwin catalog at a great price... Five plus hours of bliss. Definately five stars!

Gibbons, according to a family friend and biographer Edward jablonski "recreates Gershwin's style." I'll never know. I can say this is a lively recording and has the perfect balance. It's neither stuffy and plodding or cute.

An impressive achievement from an exciting composer.......2005-04-28

Based on the cast recordings of "Hello Again," "Marie Christine," "The Wild Party," and now "First Lady Suite," it's clear that Michael John LaChiusa is the most exciting (and prolific) musical composer of the last ten years. His music is incredibly inventive, his lyrics intelligent, and he has a knack for choosing unlikely and compelling subjects for his shows. His scores, as great as they are, also tend to be somewhat challenging, requiring repeated listenings to fully appreciate. "First Lady Suite" is no exception-- it's not all easy listening at first, but it sticks with you.

Although this recording is from a 2002 production, the show actually pre-dates "Marie Christine" and "The Wild Party," having arrived in the early 90's with "Hello Again." While it's not quite as accomplished as those scores, it's still an impressive achievement. The show is made up of three main parts, each attempting to shed some light on a notable first lady-- in order, they're Jackie Kennedy, Mamie Eisenhower, and Eleanor Roosevelt. The Kennedy sequence is the most serious, taking place on Air Force One the day of the president's assassination. The other two contain a lot of surprising humor, especially the wacky second sequence, which finds Mamie, among other things, flying on her bed through time. Each portrait feels stylistically surreal, with a dreamlike quality, and LaChiusa's unique musical style fits it all very well. There aren't really any easy showtunes here, but he's able to generate a lot of emotion through the music, and the cumulative effect is poignant and memorable.

Bear with it........2004-02-20

I really want to recommend close and repeated listening to this CD. Even though i'm a big fan of La Chiusa's Marie Christine and Wild Party, my first hearing of this show left me cold. The show seemed too unstructured to really carry a listener along - remembering that the experience of a show heard on a CD player is totally different from seeing it on a stage. I left the CD alone for months, and it's only because I'm currently working on some other La Chiusa music that I decided to give it another go. This time the show glowed out at me from the speakers. The lyrics are utterly remarkable, the characters honed to perfection and the music lilts between recitative and "numbers" with amazing fluidity, encompassing a vast range of styles that suit the moment ideally. Not all the singing is beautiful but it as always characterful and precise. I recommend this recording to anyone and urge you to put the effort in. It will reward every moment with so much beauty and wisdom.

What a treat to hear such great voices singing early LaChiusa. I especially loved Kate Shindle -- a former Miss America -- making a strong showing in the part of a lesbian. She's a stand-out. This is a must for any fan of cutting-edge 21st century American musical theater.

Great recording of a whacked-out, excellent show. The cast is terrific: most especially Heather Lee and Mary Pat Green ("Eleanor Sleeps Here" is my favorite play.) "Where's Mamie" has got to be my favorite song. Great liner notes, too. The whole thing makes me want to find out more about First Lady history.
It's not easy-listening stuff, like Hairspray, which is easy to get on first listening. But I'm into musicals that get better and better every time you hear them.

Not nearly as much fun as it should be.......2003-07-08

This early work was the first thing by John Michael LaChiusa to make critics really sit up and take notice, and the idea for it is almost irresistible: three vignetttes about First Ladies (apparently a personal obsession with LaChiusa), all centering around the idea of flight (although in the center story the idea of flight is metaphorical rather than literal). The first story centers upon Jackie Kennedy's weary secretary preparing aboard Air Force one for the fatal trip to Dallas in November, 1963. The second, the only one to focus squarely on a First Lady (rather than on her peripheral aides), features Mamie Eisenhower concerned about the crisis at Little Rock Central High School and also about allegations concerning her husband's WWII affair with Kay Sommersby: in this story Mamie is figured as a wacky and feisty Fifties housewife a la Lucy Ricardo (this turns out to be as ghastly an idea in practice as it looks). The third story, by far the strongest, centers upon Lorena Hickok, Eleanor Roosevelt's companion and lover, as Mrs. Roosevelt is coaxed by Amelia Earhardt to fly from DC to Baltimore.

If Julian Bream's recordings were letters, his would all be hand written rather than typed.

Julian Bream not only plays the guitar, and the lute
(although purists and I suspect Bream himself would say rather unconventionally), but most of all, Bream plays MUSIC. This is very, very important. There are many fine guitarists around today, but I doubt any could match Bream's sheer musicality when these recordings were made.
This 28 CD box set is a lesson in music making, regardless of what instrument is being played. The recordings are the complete RCA Bream catalogue from 1959 to 1989. If you can find the complete box set or even any of the individual volumes, I suggest you make the purchase. (Shame on RCA and BMG for not keeping this box set and "all" the individual volumes in print.)
Some of the higlights of Breams remarkable talent are his
interpretations of Britten's "Nocturnal", Walton's "Five Bagatelles", the instrumental and vocal works (with tenor Peter Pears) of Dowland, the "first" complete guitar works of Villa-Lobos, a thorough history of the guitar in Spain from the Renaissance to the Present on period instruments, plus all the works that have become classical guitar standards by Bach, Sor, Giuliani, Albeniz, Rodrigo, plus the "new" standards by Brouwer, Arnold, Berkeley, Britten, Walton, etc.
Music making of this caliber is rare indeed. Buy it if you can find it. Good Luck !

If you can find this set buy it fast. There are not to many of these left out there. This has it all. Plus Julian Bream is the greatest guitarist of all time.

This a an wonderful collection of Julian Bream. He is the master of master . I always admire his talent as a genius of this centure.

Who don't want to have a wonderful classical guitar collection? Well, this pack consists in 28 CDs, more than 1.000 minutes of music, distribuited by different titles as Baroque Guitar, Spanish Guitar, etc. Some highlights are here, like Asturias, Fernando Sor variations on Mozart's Magic Flute, Paganini Grand Sonata, all Preludes and Etudes of Villa-Lobos, and, well, lots of really good things. Also, there are some cds Julian Bream plays Guitar with Orchestra, or with Harpsichords. Ah, he plays lute in some too. Unfortunately, there are 2 or 3 cds where a tenor sings and another which a woman says some poems, and those, in my opinion, are not very nice. So, it's a good collection, and if you can, buy it!!

A slim volume of Gershwin's own arrangements of his popular songs exists, and has been recorded by many pianists. Unfortunately, these arrangements exist for only a scant few of Gershwin's songs, and they are rather abbreviated and dare I say it? Unsatisfying. Enter Jack Gibbons. Mr. Gibbons has meticulously researched George Gershwin's own playing of these pieces, from old radio shows, movie soundtracks, and other archival sources and he plays them exactly the way the composer did. He kids you not about "authentic". This is about as close as you can get to the source, and the recorded sound is spectacular. Bravo!
