Gunmetal Blues (1999 Laguna Cast) [Cast Recording]

Editorial Reviews
The New Yorker
"We found Gunmetal Blues at once so intelligent and uplifting that we didn't know whether to peg it as the intellectual blockbuster of the season or the feel-good hit of the nineties. " "... brilliantly clever lyrics, a score that couldn't be more captivating or sophisticated, and a knowing yet wistful book with more twists than a Chandler simile."

Orange County Register
"... a perfect little poison pen of a show, rife with first-rate satire but well crafted enough to be enjoyable for all the old-fashioned reasons: hummable tunes and clever words"

Album Description
Gunmetal Blues is a stylish murder mystery musical with its own witty spin on the Hollywood film noir genre which brought us The Big Sleep and The Maltese Falcon. The team of Craig Bohmler and Marion Adler (music and lyrics) and Scott Wentworth (book) set their tale in a smoky, sultry airport cocktail lounge where has-been piano player Buddy Toupee plunks out his living to a handful of barflies including down-on-his-luck gumshoe Sam Galahad and a mysterious blonde whose appearance promises nothing but trouble. New York Newsday called the Gunmetal Blues score "inventive and lively, in the style of vintage torch songs or jazz ballads, homages rather than echoes." This cast recording of the hit Laguna Playhouse production features Andrew Barnicle as "The Private Eye," Tracy Lore as "The Blonde" and Jeffrey Rockwell as "The Piano Player."

But the audio is tiring...The Blonde Song is amusing.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent show - even better live.......2005-10-10

I worked backstage on The Colony Theatre's California production of Gunmetal Blues. It's an excellent show. Each song brings something new to the story. The plot moves very quickly and doesn't unnecessarily linger. Everything is there. I recommend reading the play as well.

5 out of 5 stars GUNMETAL BLUES: Fabulous!.......2000-04-18

A well written score of jazzy music fills this soundtrack. I have only seen a local community theatre production of the show, but fell in love with it at once. Fast-paced or slow, jazzy, or a slow ballad: it's all here! A wonderful pick.
