Of Thee I Sing/Let 'em Eat Cake [Soundtrack]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Of Thee I Sing/Let 'Em Eat Cake was one of the leading recordings during the Gershwin CD revival of the late 1980s. Led by Gershwin expert Michael Tilson Thomas using some newly discovered materials, it resuscitated two nearly forgotten satires from the 1930s sung by casts who were better able to capture the spirit of the music than the opera stars who were in vogue at the time. Larry Kert (the original Tony in West Side Story) played goofy U.S. presidential candidate John P. Wintergreen, who decides to run his campaign on a theme of love. He promises to marry the winner of a beauty contest, only to reject her (played by Paige O'Hara) for secretary Mary Turner (played by cabaret singer Maureen McGovern), in great part because Mary can make corn muffins. Jack Gilford is his hapless vice president candidate Throttlebottom. The story is silly fun (who can forget the Supreme Court's question of "Which is more important, corn muffins or justice?") and the great songs include "Who Cares," "Love Is Sweeping the Country," and the title tune. The second disc features the follow-up musical, Let 'Em Eat Cake with the same principal characters plus a fiery revolutionary played by David Garrison. It's not as fun as Of Thee I Sing nor is its score as memorable ("More" is the only standard that emerged). But the two-disc set is an impressive achievement, and paved the way for the even more comprehensive and scholarly series of Nonesuch Gershwin recordings a few years later. --David Horiuchi

More interesting (and--predictably--less mechanical) than his piano rolls, Gershwin Performs Gershwin showcases the Gershwin-conducted rehearsal sessions for Second Rhapsody and Porgy and Bess along with two Gershwin radio specials recorded in the early '30s titled Music by Gershwin. These are period pieces, for sure--the sound is shoddy, and the radio spots' commercials are as entrancing as the music that's being played. But, yes, that is Gershwin conducting and playing piano, and this is as close as we'll get to hearing these familiar tunes being played the way he wanted them. --Jason Verlinde

Customer Reviews:
Great shows !.......2005-03-22
Honestly, I absolutely cannot understand why these 2 masterpieces by the Gershwins are not part of standars musical repertoire, given the great qualities of the music and the immortal lucidity of the satire of the american political intitutions.
Waiting for the next great revival of these shows, Sony should AT LEAST reissue these recordings, which, in spite of the absence of spoken dialogues, are markstones of American musical theater.
A great pair of discs, despite the casting.......2004-02-17
One reason we seldom hear "Of Thee I Sing" is that its creators were afraid to go flat out and write the full-scale through-sung operetta it should have been in the first place, structuring it as a conventional book musical instead, full of wooden scenes and hoary jokes when the songs weren't playing, and the show collapsed under the creaky stage business in revival just twenty years later. Doubly sad as it has glorious music full of inimitable Gershwin touches, and lyrics of striking imagination and wit. That initial success doomed the sequel too: "Let 'Em Eat Cake" was a musical with an attitude, and the shattering events of its day left a sourness on everything; even the composer's magical embellishments are largely missing (though that's probably because we're hearing a reconstruction, the original orchestrations having long been lost). Nonetheless it's a riveting score, and the scene of President Tweedledee's overthrow is genuinely funny.
Experts like Ethan Mordden have made much of this album's casting. To be sure, the 1952 revival was no great shakes with Jack Carson, who could barely sing, and thus with the quite wavery Larry Kert; nonetheless he grows on you, and anyway, we shouldn't expect a president to sing. Maureen McGovern is another matter. She, of course, was a "rock" star (or rather an MOR star); "slumming" is the inevitable word here. More important, she's singing out of her range, and very mannered and a little screechy; at least she's not Judy Kaye, and isn't on so much to be distracting. (Neither is Jack Gilford, who virtually lost his voice by this time and was almost unrecordable.) But Michael Tilson Thomas's vigorous conducting and a spirited supporting crew save the day, and the undoubtable excellence of these scores makes this a must-have for Gershwin and musical fans alike.
FEELING PATRIOTIC?.......2002-10-06
OF THEE I SING was the first musical comedy to win the Pulitzer Prize. It is easy to see why it won when you listen to this incredibly fine concert version from 1987, fifty years after the show was originally produced on Broadway. It is also interesting that in the Gershwins' satire there are targets which still crop up today: the Supreme Court meddling where it does not belong; voters depending on a spinmeister to choose them a candidate; ("He's the one the people choose/loves the Irish and the Jews"); The President's sex life getting more publicity than what he actually does for his country, etc. In case this all sounds heavy going, there is song after song by the incomparable George and Ira Gershwin including "Love Is Sweeping The Country," "Who Cares?" and the jubilant title love song.
There is plenty of comedy too in Vice President Throttlebottom played by wonderful Jack Gilford and President Wintergreen's intended, Diana Devereaux, played and sung terrifically by Paige O'Hara. The President chooses to marry all-American Mary Turner instead of the sexy, French Devereaux because of the way Mary makes corn muffins which causes a rift in American/Franco relations. Wintergreen and his Mary are sung beautifully by Larry Kert and Maureen McGovern.
The second CD holds OF THEE I SING's sequel LET 'EM EAT CAKE which is more bitter, more cynical and contains fewer Gershwin hit songs; only "Mine" has become a standard. But every moment on both CD's is not only listenable, but a musical gem. In these performances at the Brooklyn Academy of Music the orchestra (led by Michael Tilson Thomas) and the chorus do great work.
Feeling patriotic lately? You could do alot worse than buying these delightful CD's. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
It is a wonderful musical.......1999-02-07
I have listened to this musical cd over and over because we are preforming Of Thee I Sing at our High School in PA.....I love it

The best performance of Rhapsody in Blue.......2003-10-29
This really is the best performance of Rhapsody in Blue I've ever heard! The piano solo is played by Gershwin himself (the piano roll), and the instruments are the original ones that were intended to be used. It is indeed worth the little price of just $6.99.

Customer Reviews:
Feyer's CD is a must have.......2007-01-28
So I purchase my Nano and then easily transfer much of my "must have" music library to the 8 Mega Black Nano. The Nano makes me want to hear all my music again as I work out, etc. I ordered "must have" Feyer's Gershwin from Amazon and was lucky to get the Gershwin CD. If only they could remaster all his works onto CDs at a lower price than the $100 plus I paid. Feyer is a top addition and it reminds me of the Stanhope days and his music magic that I wish to briefly tell you.
In the latter 70s, the Stanhope weekends were a joy, buttressed by Feyer's music. He held court and the audience was captivated. He was an excellent pianist with excellent trills in the high octaves, and nice contrast with the lower ones. The Gershwin CD the piece "I Got Rhythm" reminds one of small flames jumping lightly on a log. So light, so elegant, so much in rhythm. I would take my "A" dates to the Stanhope, including my future wife of 20 plus years. After the Met Opera or ballet, I would take my dates to the Stanhope. Usually two Kier Royals, supper, wine, and dessert would accompany George's fine music. Such a rich repertory and bottomless request well that he knew with top piano skill!
Missing on the CD was his singing and funny remarks. I recall him playing `Thank Heavens For Little Girls"... they are so helpless, and then he would pick some women from the audience and repeat the word " helpless' and the everyone would laugh. My dates were the younger women in the Stanhope back then and he tended to look at my dates.....and made them feel like a princess
The Stanhope was a bit expensive but a classy place. With George, it was worth every penny. I think Gunnar ( spelling?) was the head waiter. They knew you and you did not have to ask for a certain drink as they knew your need before your request. Unlike today, waiters are more of errand boys to the kitchens. George also knew your favorites in songs.
One thing that is not obvious, despite my Ivy MBA and a good undergraduate degree, one does not learn in early years the basic American songs of Porter, Gershwin, etc. Some of my dates knew many of the words to these songs from their social events. Hence for me it was a pleasant discovery and made me grateful to the mastery of George. It opened one's appreciation to the very rich music heritage of America.
The CD in ADD format was very clear; no his; and, the accompanying musicians were well heard in CD. Enjoy this CD!
One More Time.......2002-03-08
Anyone that likes solo piano, must have this one in their collection. Feyer was a superior pianist, and arranger. These are performances to LISTEN to. For alot less than a carton of ciggies, you can buy something good for you! Aloha
George Feyer Plays George Gershwin.......2001-04-21
Hours sped like minutes when sitting next to the keyboard of Feyer's Piano in the Stanhope. I only wish all of his albums could be re-released and a new generation might experience this rare talent. He played with consummate skill, gentle humor and a panache that I've been unable to find anywhere.
George Feyer Plays George Gershwin.......2000-12-26
This is undoubtedly one of the best recordings of popular Gershwin tunes. They are played with Feyer's european touch, but amazingly american in spirit. All his collections since 1951 ("Echoes of Paris", "Echoes of Broadway", "Echoes of Rome" etc.) should be re-mastered and released again, as well as his famous recordings collected in album "Cafe carlyle". It is a real music treasure.
This is the happiest music making imaginable........1999-10-24
It's been more than 40 years since I first ran across George Feyer's "Echoes..." series of recordings on the Vox label (Echoes of Paris, Echoes of Vienna, etc.) Every month I check to see if by some miracle these recordings have been reissued, but I doubt they ever will because of their original label. In the meantime we will make do with this excellent George Gershwin album, which seems to me to come closer to his old recordings than the other stereo-era Feyer recordings now available. But will some company out there PLEASE reissue his old mono VOX recordings and spread joy through the world!
