The Boys from Syracuse (1963 London Cast) [Cast Recording]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
While not as edgy as Pal Joey or as studded with consistently great songs as Babes in Arms, The Boys from Syracuse is one of the best, funniest Rodgers and Hart concoctions. Freely--very freely--adapted from Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors, the show sees the creative team letting loose with mistaken identities, lost twins, and the eternal war of the sexes, injecting the daffy plot with classics such as "This Can't Be Love," "Falling in Love with Love," and "The Shortest Day of the Year." The London cast of this long-out-of-print recording is game, even if it's not quite as good as the one in the 1997 Encores! production. In "Sing for Your Supper," for instance, Lynn Kennington, Paula Hendrix, and Maggie Fitzgibbon don't even get close to the divine harmonies of Rebecca Luker, Debbie Gravitte, and Sarah Uriarte Berry. What makes the CD really interesting is the bonus material tagged at the end, which consists of Boys' six best-known songs interpreted by Rudy Vallee and Frances Langford. Recorded six weeks after the show opened in 1938, they were introduced at the time as a "souvenir album" from the show, predating what we now know as cast recordings. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:
La Stupenda at her best.......2007-05-06
This 2 CD set is entitled "La Stupenda," which creates extremely high expectations. Joan Sutherland meets those expectations on this CD; she is, indeed, "La Stupenda." One of the interesting aspects of this set is Dame Joan's singing some non operatic works (such as "Home Sweet Home" or "Where Are the Songs We Sung?" or "Falling in Love with Love"). In the end, this is a wonderful compilation of the art of Joan Sutherland.
First, let's consider a sampling of the cuts on these CDs.
"O Zittre Nicht" is from Mozart's "Magic Flute" and it is a challenge to sopranos, with its series of staccato high notes. Sutherland essays this well. There are some nice trills; she hits the high notes well. The series of (treacherous) high notes toward the end is handled very nicely by Sutherland. In short, she scintillates, with a closing high note well hit.
From Donizetti's "Linda di Chamounix," she sings "O luce di questi'anima." Her voice and technique are well suited for Donizetti (and Bellini). The cantabile is smoothly sung. The cabaletta is rollicking. Her coloratura technique is on target; the ornamentation is compelling. There are trills, runs, high notes and other ornamentation well done. The close is nice (although there may be a bit of a scoop on the final high note).
From "Beatrice di Tenda" (by Bellini), we hear ""Eccomi pronta. . .Deh, se un'urna." The cantabile is sung well. She hits notes clearly. The spirited cabaletta follows. Sutherland exhibits somewhat less ornamentation than usual, but trills are well done and, overall, the piece is nicely sung. The close features clean high notes.
"Home Sweet Home." This kind of illustrates Joan Sutherland's work nicely. I can hardly make out the words (and it is sung in English). But it is an interesting version. She sings the song straight, without overpowering the song with operatic technique (an occasional trill actually works out well).
Elsewhere, I have commented on her 1959 version of the "Mad Scene" from "Lucia di Lammermoor" (from her album "The Greatest Hits").
"Falling in Love with Love" is an interesting cut. This is a classic Rodgers and Hart song. Sutherland sings it pretty well, and one can pick up the words cleanly. However, one might compare this with Anna Moffo's version, which is more musical. Sutherland's version is a bit too operatic for what the song is about.
Finally, "Ah non giunge" from Bellini's "La Sonnambula," a great coloratura tune! This is taken at a sprightly pace. Sutherland exhibits good coloratura technique. There is nice ornamentation. She precisely nails high notes. In the repeat, the florid singing ramps up. This is a compelling version, with series of staccato high notes to close the work out.
Thus, this 2 CD set is a welcome entrée to the body of work of Dame Joan Sutherland. Sometimes (as with "Home Sweet Home") one has a hard time picking out the words. But with Sutherland, the skills and techniques create a compelling oeuvre that is well worth attending to.
this is the one to buy.......2007-04-18
I'm not an opera expert I just enjoy it. La Stupenda has the best of Joan Sutherland in a two CD set and it's amazing. She looked like a nice, quiet housewife but an indescribalbe voice. Her aria from Norma gave me chills and her version of "I Dreamed I Dwelt in Marble Halls" is flat out one of the prettiest things I've ever heard.
La Stupenda lives up to her name.......2006-11-12
Joan Sutherland was undeniably one of the greatest operatic sopranos of the 20th century. This comprehensive two-CD retrospective of her long career will delight her many fans, and serve as a fitting introduction for those unfamiliar with her artistry. The two CDs span a period of nearly thirty years, from 1959 to 1988, with the majority of the 27 tracks recorded during the 1960s and 1970s, when her voice was at its' astounding best. Sutherland was renowned first and foremost as a dramatic coloratura, and her supple technique is brilliantly illustrated in selections such as the Mad Scene from Lucia di Lammermoor; Doll Song from The Tales of Hoffmann; Queen of the Night aria from The Magic Flute; and the seldom-performed Concerto for Coloratura Soprano by Gliere. As her career progressed, her voice became larger and more powerful, as demonstrated by the Liebestod from Wagner's Tristan and Isolde, and In Questa Reggia from Puccini's Turandot. Lastly, Sutherland was a diva who was not afraid to let her hair down once in a while, and we are treated to lighter selections such as Where are the songs we sung? by Noel Coward, and Falling in love with love, by Rogers and Hart. Highly recommended for all lovers of great singing.
La Stupenda, Amore, amore, amore.......2006-01-28
I adore this woman's voice. And I love this cd. I was really happy to find an aria of "Esclarmonde" which is virtually impossible to find as well as some of the more lesser known works of hers such as Mozart's Queen of Night, although I wish she had done a recording of the revenge aria (Der Holle Roche) The whole cd was wonderful to hear but if I had to make on complaint it's that I didn't buy her Isolde's Liebestod but the woman can sing Lucia better than just about anyone so I'll forgive her for not sticking with the Wagner. In fact I am thrilled that she chose Lucia over Isolde because frankly acting and interperation was never her strong suit, it was the pure beauty of her voice. It's always a grand pleasure to listen to Joan kick butt in any coloratura arias but of course she set the bar so high that there is yet a coloratura since her that can do those arias half as well. She has spoiled me for life and that's why she is La Stupenda.
La Stupenda - well deserved title for Joan.......2006-01-12
I am not an opera expert by any stretch of the imagination - but I love opera. I love the expertise and beautiful voices of these hardworking singers. When I first heard Joan sing, it was from a recording she made late in her career and I honestly thought, what's the big deal about her? So, I decided to get The Art of Prima Donna album, and all I have to say is WOW! In her prime, this woman was a fantastic singer! While she wasn't the dramatist like Callas was (I also love Callas), her range and the way she hit each note so precisely was amazing! So, I bought La Stupenda. I loved the piece she did from Handel's Alcia and the fantastic Rossini duet she did with Marilyn Horn. The entire album is wonderful. I particularly like how Joan's high notes are never screechy - she makes those high notes sound so effortless. I also appreciate how she had such control over her vibrato - not too trilly (I like trilly - especially by Beverly Sills - however, not every song should be all trill). Finally, I think that Joan was one of the few sopranos that didn't try to drown everyone out. When she sang a duet, she blended with the other singer - how rare! Not all singers seem to be able to accomplish that - duets shouldn't be a competition. This album is worth every penny. Joan was one of the great singers of the 20th century and she deserves her title of La Stupenda!

More Classic Rodgers & Hart.......2007-06-26
This is another show all music theatre lovers should know. This recording does it justice.
Not Syracuse New York after all.......2006-03-06
This famous American musical well deserves to be remounted commercially, though those familiar with Shakespeare (or the Australian musical The Venetian Twins) may find it strangely familiar. This is a terrific recreation of the style and performance of the original score and the series it is part of deserves support for giving exposure to some rarely staged shows. Not that its songs are not famous in their own right - but you do tend to hear them and think "so that's where that comes from". A must have if you are a serious music theatre fan.
beautiful new recording of the Rodgers and Hart smash-hit!.......2003-10-28
THE BOYS FROM SYRACUSE is one of the more delighful offerings in the Rodgers and Hart canon. It features some of the most beloved songs ever written for the Broadway stage. This recording is from the acclaimed 1997 concert-reading from the Encores! series.
Rebecca Luker (THE SECRET GARDEN, THE MUSIC MAN), Davis Gaines (THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, SWEENEY TODD), Sarah Uriarte Berry, Julie Halston (GYPSY), Debbie Gravitte and Malcolm Gets, all superb Broadway talents, lead the strong cast.
The musical, based on Shakespeare's COMEDY OF ERRORS, originally opened on Broadway in 1938. This is the first time since then that the show has featured the original orchestrations, restored and played to perfection by the Coffee Club Orchestra, led by Rob Fisher.
Rebecca Luker dazzles and scintillates with "Falling in Love with Love"; Debbie Gravitte belts out "Oh, Diogenes" in her own grand style, whilst Davis Gaines and Sarah Uriarte Berry sing the ballad "This Can't Be Love" (later added to the film score of Rodgers and Hart's JUMBO). Luker, Gravitte and Berry also sing a dizzying rendition of "Sing For Your Supper", arguably one of the score's high-points.
This album is a must-own for fans of this gorgeous show and its candy-box score. Highly-recommended.
A slightly dissenting opinion.......2002-06-10
What is right about this album is almost enough to make me understand why everyone on this page so unreservedly raves about it. The performers are great, the women more so than the men, both seperately (Rebecca Luker in "Falling In Love WIth Love" and the reprise of "The Shortest Day of the Year," Sarah Uriate Berry in her duet and reprise of "This Can't Be Love," and Debbie Gravitte in "What Can You Do With a Man?" "He and She," and especially "Oh, Diogenes!") and together in the showstopping trio "Sing For YOur Supper". The completeness of the recording and the restored original orchestrations are a great bonus. And there is plenty of energy and fun to be found. But there isn't quite enough to disguise the fact that this score doesn't quite approach the greatness of the Rodgers and Hart scores for such shows as Pal Joey, On Your Toes, and Babes In Arms. Those shows had one great song after another, or at the very least great tunes supplemented by ones that weren't on their level but were perfectly pleasent and agreeable in their own right. This show's score has plenty of great songs, including the above mentioned as well as "Dear Old Syracuse," "You Have Cast YOur Shadow On the Sea," and the touching "Big Brother," but there are a few noticeable misses, made all the more dissapointing when one considers Rodgers and Hart's reputation and repertoire. The opening shows the pitfalls that can be encountered in the attempts to integrate a musical; is is dull exposition instead of a great song that also eases the audience into the story. "Ladies of the Evening" and "Come With Me" are one-joke songs, and Hart doesn't seem to try too hard to come up with enough of his trademark quick and clever rhymes to allow us to forgive that. And the Act I finale, "Let Antipholus In," must be extremely funny in the context of what's going on in the show (A synopsis in the liner notes would have been helpful) because just listening to the title being repeated over and over and over again drove me to distraction. It is great that Encores! is producing concert versions of vintage, rarely performed musicals such as these to allow their scores to be heard and appreciated by a new generation. Much of what is here makes for a great recording, but when one considers that we are dealing with Rodgers and Hart, the odd misfire in the score is enough to make for a less than completely wonderful experience.
an absolute delight.......2002-04-16
This is one of the best show recordings I've ever heard; marvelously performed and heavenly to the ear. I couldn't stop smiling, listening to it. There isn't now, nor was there ever, a song writing team that compares with Rodgers and Hart, and this recording is a perfect tribute. Wonderful.

Customer Reviews:
Great compilation.......2002-05-10
I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.
A disappointment.......2001-12-15
There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

SUCH A GREAT TEAM.......2006-05-31
Very few shows survive well the test of time, but RODGERS AND HART are truely timeless. You can revive BABES IN ARMS,THE BOYS FROM SYRACUSE and PAL JOEY endlessly,it will still be better than most of today's BROADWAY.This is one of at least four recordings of the show and has a very talented cast. Was i surprized to find out that STUART DAMON ,who i remembered from the series THE CHAMPIONS was such a good singer. This is perhaps LARRY HART's finest hour as lyricist.Every damn song clicks in their own special way.As usual, you discover that songs like FALLING IN LOVE WITH LOVE and THIS CAN'T BE LOVE are almost never sung with the complete lyrics by non BROADWAY singers.Charm and wit are the key words to describe the fabulous team of DICK and LARRY ,who can make rime nostalgic with classic.Let me finish by saying that you won't be ashamed to have this recording in your collection. You'll have something to sing for your supper.
ROUSING BOYS THAT FOREVER STAY IN YOUR HART.......2006-05-09
Undiscovered classics usually should remain undiscovered-if you've never heard of them, there's probably a good reason. DRG, on the other hand, continues to discover and dust off and reissue oldies but goodies. Case in point: This 43-year-old off-Broadway recording of Rodgers and Hart's The Boys from Syracuse, a classic in every sense. The production was directed by a (then) young and svelte Christopher Hewitt, five years before donning a dress to play the worst director ever in the original Mel Brooks' The Producers, and decades before gracing the small-screen as the epicurean Mr. Belvedere.
The cast, headed by Ellen Hanley and Karen Morrow, is not particularly well-known, but spectacularly talented. The book was adapted by George Abbott from Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors; and the music and lyrics are simply so wonderful, so unforgettable that the some smart producers should revive these Boys annually. "Falling in Love with Love"-about painful, unrequited love and emotional pain-is balanced by the lilting, happy-go-lovely, "This Can't Be Love." Add to this melange the plaintive ballad "You Have Cast Your Shadow on the Sea" and the rousing "Sing for your Supper" and you have a theatre piece with wit, charm, elegance, and an extraordinary sense of style. Larry Hart, the lyricist here, may have been a tormented gay man, but he is-and remains-the one true poet of love in American musicals during the first part of the twentieth century. This is one of the great recordings of Hart's material, sung with verve and gusto. It belongs on everyone's shelf.

Customer Reviews:
great singers, great songs.......2006-05-03
Some of broadway's best singers are on this album, including Brian Stokes Mitchell, Debbie Gravitte, Marin Mazzie, and Rebecca Luker. (The cd is worth buying for Rebecca Luker's song alone!) The songs are beautifully orchestrated and sung. Most are light hearted and fun, leaving me with a good feeling when listening.
If you're a fan of broadway showtunes, I believe you'll enjoy this album.

Customer Reviews:
goddard lieberson is still reigning.......2000-04-14
one of the best of goddard lieberson's 1950's columbia productions. outstanding singing by performers with addicting voices.jack cassidy(better heard than seen), portia nelson, bibi osterwald with her comic nuances.rodgers and hart couldn't have been interpreted better.
Mad for Jack Cassidy.......2000-01-22
Jack Cassidy was to me what Frank Sinatra was to others of my generation. I simply swoon when I hear him and this recording has always been one of my favorites.
I LOVE THIS MUSICAL!!.......1999-09-10
Perhaps it is simply nostalgia (my parents had this record when I was young -- until I absconded with it!), but this recording is by far my preference of the three available. I love the quality of the voices which do not sound like modern singers at all -- very charactery and very fun.
First recording of show pleasant but no stunner.......1998-08-19
After Columbia's studio cast recording of PAL JOEY proved a smash hit, record producer Goddard Lieberson produced a number of other Rodgers and Hart shows with studio casts - Mary Martin in BABES IN ARMS, ON YOUR TOES and this first recording of their best score THE BOYS FROM SYRACUSE. Jack Cassidy and Portia Nelson are acceptable but the numbers are recorded with less pizzazz than the 1965 Off Broadway revival and with less artistry than the 1997 reincarnation. Either of these is the first choice. The mono sound does not hamper this recording however - another Columbia marvel in sound recording. Portia Nelson's wobble may annoy (as did Hanley's in the 1965 revival)but all in all the recording is an acceptable if less than first choice.
