Broadway: The Great Original Cast Recordings [Cast Recording]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Sony celebrated the millennium with its mammoth 26-CD collection, Soundtrack for a Century, but fortunately starving actors and other theater lovers can satisfy themselves with the 2-CD installment, Broadway: The Great Original Cast Recordings. Beginning with what most consider the dawn of the modern musical, Show Boat, the set goes on to sample songs from Kiss Me, Kate (the first cast recording issued on LP) and many other of the greatest shows ever written for the stage (My Fair Lady and West Side Story have the most selections--three each). The set is limited to recordings from the Columbia Records vault, but it was a treasure trove under the primary direction of producer Goddard Lieberson. The 1940s and '50s are marked by major shows by Rodgers and Hammerstein, Lerner and Loewe, and Leonard Bernstein, to name only a few, while the 1960s and '70s see new takes on the traditional forms, with Cabaret and works by the young Stephen Sondheim (even Anyone Can Whistle). Things begin to thin out in the last two decades of the century, as Columbia missed out on the mature Sondheim, the Andrew Lloyd Webber & Co. blockbusters, and the surge in revivals; the '80s are represented by Nine and the '90s by Cy Coleman's Will Rogers Follies and The Life. Of course, it's impossible to capture a whole century of Broadway music in only 153 minutes, but few fans could quibble with more than a handful of these smart selections. Practically worth the price of the package itself is the beautiful 64-page booklet, which includes an essay by Frank Rich, notes on every show, plus some brief sidebars, album covers and theater posters, and photos from both the stage and recording studios. --David Horiuchi

Where is ALW.......2001-11-05
Did the creators of this CD forget about Andrew Lloyd Webber? Gees! Where's Cats? Joseph? Evita? Jesus Christ Superstar? and all those other great musicals he's done????? How can you forget one of the greatest composers of our time? Other wise its a good CD
Classics.......1999-12-30
This is well over 2 hours of classic broadway. Most of the tracks are from the 50s and 60s. There are only a couple recents, the newest being 1997. If you are a fan of or interested in Broadway sonfs from the 1930 and on this is definitly for you. The only problem I see is that the only songs on here are songs in which Sony Music had recorded. So the it is the best of the Sony recordings really. Other record labels are shunned. It does come with beautiful 64-page booklet. I like it.
A MUST HAVE for every Broadway music lover.......1999-10-16
Although I just received this today and am currently listening to it now, I couldn't wait to share my feelings, even though I've yet to listen to the entire collection. Anyone and everyone who loves the musical theater MUST add this to his or her collection. What a joy and delight it is to hear, with the help of modern technology, these classics! It absolutely gives one chills to hear some of these long lost beautiful voices sing classic standards, and, to relive some of the joys I've been fortunate to have experienced attending many of the later shows. This collection is a millenium collectable, capturing as it does such fond memories of 20th century musical theater. My congratulations to all who envisioned it's production and brought it to fruition. Columbia/Sony must share the spotlight on this one with the performers. Don't let this one pass you by.

Customer Reviews:
Great compilation.......2002-05-10
I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.
A disappointment.......2001-12-15
There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

Customer Reviews:
The Title Is Accurate........2002-02-21
I'll be honest - I mainly bought this CD for one song - the new recording of William Finn's "Unlikely Lovers" from Falsettos.
In fact, there is a sticker on the front of the Great Musicals CD which states the following - "Unlikely Lovers from Falsettos is new to CD."
This isn't really correct. This particular recording of that wonderful second act song is new, but the song itself was previously recorded and released on the original cast recording of Falsettoland many years ago. I have also read a review of another (unauthorised?) CD recording made in Michigan of Falsettoland.
Anyway, this new recording is so powerful and emotional, I'm glad I bought the CD.
Readers might be interested to know that the 2001 recording of U. Lovers was made at Joe's Pub in January - the same place where Finn's Infinite Joy was recorded.
To the best of my knowledge, U.L. wasn't performed in the live show. I believe this as in an interview, Finn stated that the only song from Falsettos they were to perform in Infinite Joy was The Baseball Game (wonderfully conveyed by Stephen DeRosa on the CD). Also, in this new recording of U.L., unlike the recordings on Infinite Joy, there isn't any audience reaction. I suspect that the cast made this recording before or after audience arrived.
Loved this new version. It's accompanied by a solo piano. Lewis Cleale has a more traditional male voice (light baritone?) than Michael Rupert's higher, head, some might say "character" sound. Both are more than pleasant on the ear.
Also, on this recording, there's an a cappella section towards the end of the song; on the lyrics "...let's pretend..." Quite affecting.
As for the rest of the album, well all the tracks are gems in one way or another. Particular favourites of mine include -
"Lady's Maid" from Titanic. With it's "up down up" three note/syllable melody structure (millionaire, constable, engineer) it is immediately catchy, and is a great example of an "I'm about to start a journey, so wish me luck as I go" type of show song.
"All The Wasted Time" from Parade. Loved the almost folk influenced sound and the soaring voices; including Carolee Carmello who is heard on Infinite Joy.
"New Music" from Ragtime. It 'builds' beautifully and is a great example of the work of a contemporary song writing team - the highly talented Flaherty and Ahrens.
I suppose the thing is, that many musical theatre buffs will already have many of these songs on CD. However, you many not have THESE recordings - e.g. - the "If You Could See Her" from Cabaret is from the 1998 version, the "Do-Re-Mi" from (what else?) The S.O.M. is the 1998 recording.
If one was being picky, the following points might be made -
For a CD celebrating RCA's 100th anniversary, this collection is somewhat 'top heavy' - 9 of the 14 tracks - almost 65% were recorded in 1992 or later.
Also -
With a number of the American based performers, even when they are portraying non-Americans, their native accent is still recognisable. This is particularly noticeable on track 14 - "Do-Re-Mi" ("...Here, I'll make it easier for you...") and, to a lesser extent; track 2 - "Prologue - Tradition" from Fiddler ("...trying to scratch out a pleasant simple tune...")
But when one is dealing with material and performances of this level, such points are minor quibbles.
All in all, a very fine CD which has made a welcome addition to my collection.

Customer Reviews:
A GEM FROM THE PRINCESS THEATRE . . . .......2005-09-07
I agree with Mr. Behrens that this recording is a "must" for anyone serious about the American musical theatre, but I found the whole thing a trifle boring. (I would have given it 3 stars, but I was worried about turning people off.) The performances are splendid, and the original orchestrations for 10 pieces are a delight to hear. Upon hearing the overture, you might think you're listening to a superb digital restoration of an early 1900's recording. It's a gas.
Mr. Behrens states that the score contains neither a hit nor a miss and is an "improvement on the bubbleheaded competition," but the operettas of Sigmund Romberg, Rudolph Friml, Victor Herbert, et.al, were overflowing with far better songs than Jerome Kern would write for this or any other Princess Theatre Show. Many of the lyrics for "Eddie" are pretty inane, typical for the time, however. Kern wrote a much better score two years later for "Leave It to Jane" (1917), lyrics provided by long time collaborator P.G. Wodehouse. (A wonderful recording of the 1958 revival of "Jane" is available on AEI Records.) With Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein, II, Jerome Kern wrote "Show Boat" in 1927, giving us the first truly great American musical. He also contributed some of Hollywood's most memorable songs, including "A Fine Romance," "The Way You Look Tonight," and "The Last Time I Saw Paris."
(...)
A musical as it used to be.......1999-10-24
My fellow reviewer from Monterey Mass. hit the nail on the head. Though not as good as some of the "Princess Theater" shows to come ("Oh, Boy," "Oh, Lady, Lady," and the rest--this musical is quite an improvement on the bubbleheaded competition it had not only in its own time but long after it. It is also a relief from the "musical play" that replaced the musical comedy. Not a single hit song and not a single poor one in the whole show that was a pioneer of the great "integrated" shows to come, not the least of which would be Kern's own "Show Boat." This is a must for every serious collection of Broadway shows.
Wonderful version of a charming show.......1998-09-08
This is a 1915 show but it has more snap and charm than the current long melodramas that masquerade as entertainment

Customer Reviews:
Even better than the LIVE recording!.......2001-06-15
I enjoyed this recording even better than their LIVE AT THE MERCURY THEATRE. Great selection of material, great arrangements, and producing. I'm crazy about Susan Moniz and Kathy Santen. These women do Chicago proud!
Excellent Divas!.......2001-06-15
This is a great recording. There is such a wonderful spirit to the LIVE event. The performances are all strong, and are captured well. Special kudos to Hollis Resnick, and the "3 Ingenues 3". The producer of this concert/album is to be commended.
Diva Lovers..........2001-01-16
This collection of 15 songs by some of Chicago's greatest divas is well-worth the purchase. Standouts include Hollis Resnick's "I'll Imagine you a Song" (Lutvak/Hall) and Kathy Taylor's "Losing My Mind" (Sondheim). Cabaret lovers will certainly want to add this to their collection.
