Celebrating Andrew Lloyd Webber [Soundtrack]

Originally a BBC Radio broadcast, Celebrating Andrew Lloyd Webber is a 78-minute collection of highlights from a live 1991 concert in Birmingham, England. Featured soloists are Claire Moore and Simon Bowman, who played Christine and Raoul, respectively, in the West End's Phantom of the Opera (but not in the original cast) and married American couple Ellen and Chris in the original company of Miss Saigon. The program captures various Lloyd Webber hits up to that time (the latest show represented is Aspects of Love, with Bowman doing his best Michael Ball impression in "Seeing Is Believing"), with the chorus getting to stretch out in various roles in their medley of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and the BBC Concert Orchestra performing a number of instrumental selections. The live format captures its share of glitches, but even longtime Lloyd Webber listeners might find an unfamiliar item: Moore's "The Last Man in My Life," which was not included in the Bernadette Peters production of Song and Dance. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars A Gem for Bowman Fans.......2003-05-17

A definite must-have!! The live recording lends a sense of interesting realism to the recording. The rare glitches can be humorous and always entertaining. The assortment of songs recorded, while missing his later works, are a great sample of Webber's musical genius. The only drawback is the performance of the female vocalist - a tired, shrill experience best forgotten. However, Bowman is spectacular outperforming several of his colleagues, including Michael Ball. Also, the chorus is an immense talent in itself. BUY THIS CD!!
