Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Gem of a Musical.......2006-01-20

Based on the popular children's novel Sarah, Plain and Tall, this beautiful recording of the musical as performed by the original New York cast is definitely a gem of a musical that must be added to any musical lover's collection. In an age when composers try to shoehorn musical pieces without regard to whether it suits its subject matter or its characters, every piece in this musical complements both the storyline and the characters exquisitely. One could almost smell the rain approaching in the piece "Storm." And the sense of longing and loss in the song "Quartet" is so moving.

Although originally created as a children's musical based on a children's novel, this is so much more than that. It is a beautiful gem of a musical that doesn't need showy special effects but has emotional effects like characters that you care about and root for, and music that is touching and sweeping. Effects that more musicals these days should include.
