Civil War: The Nashville Sessions
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
This is the initial volume of a triple-CD release of The Civil War soundtrack, and it's hard to think that the other two could equal this first installment. The Nashville Sessions evokes images of pitched tents and cannons very well. Bookended with narration by the great casting of Charlie Daniels, the compilation is filled by low-key, solemn tracks. "Old Gray Coat," starts out bleak, then kicks into a nice little country-pop song, but the lyrics uncannily convey images of a war few of us really know much about. The best song on the compilation--the lone contribution by an African American--is BeBe Winans's "River Jordan," narrated from the perspective of the black soldiers called upon to fight in the war. It's a touching, powerful gospel number that really breaks loose at the end. Other standouts include the piano ballad "Tell My Father" by Kevin Sharp and "Missing You (My Bill)" by Deana Carter. --Aaron Tassano --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

One-sided.......2006-08-17
None of these songs are from the actual Civil War period. Only one is from the point of view of a slave. Most are about Rebel forces and families. Linda Eder's song is the only truly beautiful one.
Glory and heartbreak beautifully sung.......2006-05-01
From the wistful melancholy of "Virginia" as a soldier sings about his home to the anguish of an officer ordering his men to their deaths in "Judgement Day" this CD depicts the tragedy, glory, and grief that is war through haunting songs by C&W's best. Highly recommend.
An Amazing CD.......2005-11-11
I haven't seen the show, but I heard the song "The Day the Sun Stood Still" and I had to buy the CD. Even if you don't like Country music, I highly recommend it. The music is absolutely wonderful.
My favorite tracks are "The Day the Sun Stood Still," "Virginia," "Old Gray Coat," "Judgement Day," "Regimental Drummer," and "Last Waltz for Dixie."
The Civil War: The Nashville Sessions (1998 Studio Cast).......2005-07-09
If you've never listened to country music, this is a great way to introduce yourself to the genre. This album is filled with great proformances by a variety of singers. My favorite songs are by Linda Eder, not a country star but a wonderful singer from Broadway. Her two songs on this album are very touching. This is a great listen!
See the Show.......2000-07-06
After seeing the show I had to immediately run out and buy the CD. It's good, but live theatre will always prevail. For a generation who hasn't had to live through a war on home soil, this music gives heart to history books and fleshes out the black and white pages of your tattered high school text on the Civil War. Listen to "For the Glory" and remember the cost of freedom.
