Fosse [Cast Recording]

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Fans of Fosse--the Broadway dance revue highlighting the varied output of choreographer-director Bob Fosse--will undoubtedly want to snatch up this cast recording of the music. Though it's missing a few tunes found in the live production, the disc still presents some of the best-loved numbers that made Fosse famous from musicals such as Dancin', Sweet Charity, and Chicago. Jane Lanier, Michael Paternostro, and Alex Sanchez do a fun take on The Pajama Game's "Steam Heat." Shannon Lewis's sultry "I Gotcha" (from 1972's Liza with a Z television special) is one of the disc's catchiest tunes. The Chicago tunes--"Nowadays," "The Hot Honey Rag," and "Razzle Dazzle"--are also obvious highlights filled with vitality. Unfortunately, synthesized music and unaffected vocals mar a few tracks; "Bye Bye Blackbird," for example, sounds empty and dated without the visual cues. Luckily, "Sing! Sing! Sing!" from Dancin' closes out the disc with a brassy and swinging jazz sound--which is exactly how Fosse would probably want to be remembered. --Jason Verlinde --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Collection.......2007-04-11

As a selection, this is highly representative of Mozart's music. Just seeing the volume of work makes one marvel at Mozart's genius. Hear everything from piano to woodwinds, symphonies to concertos as well as religious pieces and operas. On my cd player, which is not a very expensive model, I get fine tonal quality and dynamics. I would highly recommend this box set to any fan of Mozart's work.

4 out of 5 stars Celebrate Mozart's 250th at a Budget Price.......2006-01-11

This month will mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of one of the giants of the classical music world. While I am certainly not a classical music snob (the only Mozart piece I can identify is "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik," and what little I know of his life came from the 1984 movie "Amadeus"), I recognize his genius and the significance of his music.

This 20-CD box set gathers all of his major symphonies, concertos and operas into one massive collection. All of the selections are performed by European musicians (eg. the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berliner Kammerorchester, etc.). While not household names, the music is uniformly excellent.

If you're looking for an inexpensive purchase (I got mine at a national retailer that rhymes with "Clam's Tub" for under $20!) to kick off your "Rock Me Amadeus" party, this is a great choice. RECOMMENDED

--Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars Jazz at its best.......2006-08-06

This jazz dance music keeps my spirits up and my toes tapping. I was delighted to introduce my 15 year old granddaughter to this Fosse music. She loves it.

5 out of 5 stars A great musical!.......2006-06-16

I loved this recording. It's one of the finest I've heard in a long time for a B'way show. The Crunchy Granola Suite is electrifying. This show reminded me of DANCING which I saw some time ago in New York.

3 out of 5 stars Needs The Visuals.......2005-07-14

The Tony-winning production of "Fosse" was an excellent revue of Mr. Fosse's contributions to Broadway, but doesn't exactly translate as well to cd. Still, a nice "highlights" buy!

Best tracks include:

Life Is Just A Bowl Of Cherries
Big Spender
Rich Man's Frug
Hot Honey Rag
Sing! Sing! Sing!

The voices and orchestrations are good, but I would suggest purchasing the original cast albums instead.

Try "Chicago" or "Sweet Charity" for the best examples.

1 out of 5 stars Where's Fosse?.......2004-02-02

On stage FOSSE was overlong but at least enjoyable to see some of his best dance sequences recreated. The show was a fine showcase for some of Broadway's best dancers, and some of the numbers generated real excitement, BUT....we learned nothing about the man the show supposedly celebrates. From all reports he was complex, dark, and driven. The current revival of CHICAGO is more a tribute to Fosse, than this bloated dance cycle. That it won the 1999 Tony award just reflects on how weak the 1998/99 season really was.

Translating a dance show to CD is almost pointless. If any of the numbers had been sung with a strong individule style they might have made an aural impact. None of them do. The songs on this CD are all better heard in their cast or soundtrack albums. No one track here is a true standout.

The star of the recording is the orchstra ...which is sensational in re-creating musical styles from cheesy 1960s TV shows to the big Brassy sound of Broadway to the jazzy sounds of Benny Goodman's "Sing Sing Sing" which closes the album. (This song should now be barred from being used in any more shows for 10 years having been featured in SWING!; CONTACT and FOSSE!!!)

The Cd booklet has some color pictures, but no notes on the how or why of the show itself.

Those in search of FOSSE are better served by the VHS/DVD release even though it too pales when compared to the show as seen live on stage.

5 out of 5 stars All around, FANTASTIC!.......2002-08-25

Incomprable music celebrating the best of the Broadway works featuring Fosse numbers...lovingly recreated with a stellar cast and orchestrations. Enjoyable listening for anyone, but a must-have tribute for any fan of the Great White Way!

4 out of 5 stars Who needs mix tapes?.......2000-05-18

If, like me, you were to pick up this album from a friend, without liner notes nor knowing anything about it, you may listen to it a few times, enjoying the music and wondering what seems familiar about it. I know-that guy playing Tevye from "Fiddler" and Pseudolus from "Forum" sounds really familiar. Now where have I heard that voice before? I've got it-Costanza! It's George!

Once I realized that I was listening to Jason Alexander sing-and well!, I could really get back to enjoying the music instead of having that nagging question first in my mind. And what I hear is a lot of fun. The show translates to soundtrack surprisingly well for what is mostly a dance show. Fiddler, Forum, On the Town, West Side Story-what a great and somewhat underappreciated legacy in this day and age of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Disney. I wish I had been there to see it-the reason I gave this 4 stars rather than 5 can be summed up in "The Small House of Uncle Thomas" which I can just see in my mind, but which does nothing for me as a song absent of Robbins' genius staging. All in all, a nice collection of Broadway songs.

The first in a series of Gavin Bryar's recordings with the Latvian Radio choir featuring his own works and those of Latvian and other composers!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars JUST RECENTLY TIMELESS.......2006-03-06

With "On Photography" we are introduced to a broader range of interests than the recent and equally outstanding "Oi Me Lasso". Still, Bryars seems lately to be charged with making aspects of early and sacred music into something better-tuned to the contemporary ear. While the forms may be familiar, few composers are able to strike such a distinctive tonality. Turning as he often does to unusual texts for inspiration, Bryars here offers a fascinating piece drawn from the writing of Thomas de Quincy on the death of Kant. But the title piece may be the most interesting. In addition to being the first performance of his first piece for choir, "On Photography" features Bryars performing on harmonium and imparting a melancholic, slowly breathing sense of life to the title work.

The performances are as meticulous as the compositions, imbued with great detail and a pronounced tendency to avoid more typical turns and familiar cadences. Production and final mix reveal a detailed soundstage with concise placement, left to right as well as front to back. There are equally compelling pieces by Maskats and Silvestrov -- whose 2004 ECM release, "Silent Songs" deserves your attention as well. Each composer here provides an excellent complement to Bryars' compositions.

There are several seemingly more popular artists at work on similar ground today. From the perspective of performance, Trio Medieval (again, check into "Oi Me Lasso") and even at times Anonymous 4 come to mind. Among composers, you may find Bryars associated with Arvo Part or John Tavener, or the many works of past and contemporary composers performed by the Hilliard Ensemble. Yet Bryars demonstrates a well-developed sense of and feel for modernity that the others often and deliberately set aside. And he does this without cutting himself or the listener completely off from past traditions. Consequently, his work is immediately recognizable, while never becoming as outwardly ornamental, abstract or as overtly sentimental as that of many others. Importantly, the subjects which he chooses are not strictly scared, as likely coming from this world than exclusively from "the next" -- "Sinking of the Titanic"; and "A man in a room, gambling" are only two more demonstrations of his ability to take moments from every day life and set such egalitarian experiences to such remarkable music. Which is why Bryars' work is proving to be some of the most consistently interesting and unique in the contemporary catalog, in touch with making the routine anything but, and more capable of becoming and remaining intimately connected to our world and our lives.

"On Photography" is still another example. Here, the work results from a singular aesthetic sensibility that has been refined and distilled to create music of complexity, restraint, purposeful beauty and intellect that places it among the most rewarding of the late 20th or extremely early 21st century I've heard.

5 out of 5 stars As Always, Hilarious.......2007-05-03

This is so funny! Like all the Forbidden Broadway cds, its another knock-out. I feel like such a crazy person when I am in the car driving and I just burst out laughing. Its great and a must have for any Forbidden Broadway fan.

3 out of 5 stars Spoof Odessey worth the laughs!.......2002-04-14

I enjoyed "Forbidden Broadway 2001: A Spoof Odyssey." This recording has some truly genius material, and although these actors' impersonations of famous Broadway stars aren't as strong as they have been in the past, the CD has a lot to recommend it.

Particularly strong is Track 16, "Let's do an old fashioned show tune," featuring Elton John and Ethel Merman duking it out over AIDA, which Merman says is "putting everyone here through hell." Likewise, Track 15, "Let's Ruin Times Square Again," tickles my funny bone. Also wonderful are the satires of Beauty and the Beast, Angela Lansbury, and the Full Monty; Gerard Alessandrini's done a tremendous job with these! In addition, this CD's introductory song is much stronger than those on the previous volumes of Forbidden Broadway. It really sets the tone for the best parts of this recording.

Unfortunately, with a few notable exceptions, the first half of the CD is a bit thin, which is why I give this recording 3 out of 5 stars: Even though it entertains me, there's a lot I have to skip over. For example, the Liza Minelli spoof annoying (though, I admit, a little funny), and in the Music Man revival satire, their Robert Preston impersonator sounds *nothing* like the original. (In earlier recordings, the actors *did* sound like the people they claimed to be.)

The good news is that the CD has 30 tracks in all, so even though there are 13 that I dislike, I just love the rest... I do recommend it!

2 out of 5 stars better to be "Lost in Space".......2001-12-31

First and foremost, this CD is really for diehard fans of Forbidden Broadway, those of us who want the good, the bad and the ugly on the cd rack. I was extremely unimpressed with the latest offering.

While I agree with some of the other reviewers that there is some nice work, I don't know that Saturday Night Fiasco and Sondheim's Blues are sufficient to carry the rest of the tracks. Not much seems new or worse yet, important. Disney isn't new, nor is Les Miz. And while pointing out what is stale and pedestrian on Broadway was amusing on the last couple of releases, this Forbidden Broadway spoof clearly has joined the list of stale and pedestrian.

While there is some nice material on this disc, I really didn't laugh out loud, and that is why I have always bought these in the past.

If Alessandrini reduces the show to the same complaints of the same shows and then replaying lightly tweaked versions of past numbers, Trouble and Alan Cumming in Cabaret specifically, then he has himself is on the becoming a revival - and we know what he thinks of revivals.

The repeats might even be acceptable if there was something fresh in the perfomance, but both were done much better on their respective discs. I think Danny Gurwin is a great comedian, but he doesn't shine in either of these numbers. We also need a recording with no Ethel Merman or Liza numbers - give them a rest already. And why bring back Streisand with such a poor imitation? The earlier Barbara's were dead on vocal impressions as well as speech patterns. If you aren't going to improve on it, then don't drag it back out.

Alessandrini suggests that this is one of the best casts he has ever worked with. I don't know what he bases that on, but I beg to differ, either cast with Bryan Batt was significantly better, although they worked with fresh, clever material. Still, those recordings had verocious talent that brought Gerard's stinging wit to life for those of us who can't see every new production of FB.

Maybe it is time to go to off Broadway productions, or to the radio or the movies for some new ideas. Or else promise no references to the Gap, Disney, or Chorus Boys, (way over used on this recording), along with a Merman and Liza free season. Start from scratch. That might give us hope that Forbidden Broadway too might not be dead.

3 out of 5 stars Stretched Thin.......2001-03-26

I just saw the stage production of Forbidden Broadway 2001: A Spoof Odyssey. I agree with the other reviewers who feel that Alessandrini is no longer at the top of his game. Perhaps he should lay off for a year or three and let Broadway present new things for him to lampoon - as it always will.

The opening sequence is forced and unfunny, and clearly in place only to batter the listener with the "2001" theme. Unlike a previous reviewer, I found the Judi Dench parody hysterical, though I question its accuracy.

The "Trouble" parody is, as it always was, incomplete and thin. My dear friend John Kenrick (...) did a better job with it - included the segments of the original song that GA left out, and in a funnier fashion. The Cole Porter parody is marginally amusing, but the Brian Mitchell/Marin Mazzie parody is dead on the mark, and VERY funny.

The parody of Cheryl Ladd remains in the show, although she's no longer in "Annie Get Your Gun" - Reba McIntyre is now in the role. Similarly, he stabs at Alan Cumming, who is no longer playing the Emcee. These numbers, while funny, lack punch. On the other hand, he once again skewers long time target Patti LuPone with an hysterical new parody of Being Alive. I suppose she's innately funnier, after all these years, than Alan Cumming, who is, after all, a relative newcomer.

The Rocky Horror parody is amusing, and the observation that sex has moved off 42nd Street and onto the Broadway stage is not without merit. The Beauty parody is amusing, and apt, but as has already been noted, GA has been clobbering us with the Disnification of Broadway for years now. I suppose he finds some glee in the fading success of this particular show.

I must say that while Gurwin is not the greatest singer, "Sondheim's Blues" is the most brilliant piece I've heard from Alessandrini in years. It's absolutely dead on. The friends I was with had never seen nor heard "Follies" and completely missed the point, but I was in stitches.

The "10 Years More" (which does not appear on this album, but remains in the show) has really begun to wear thin, especially with the closing this year of Cats and Miss Saigon. The Cameron Macintosh British mega-musicals are finally releasing their grip on Broadway, and this isn't as funny any more.

Broadway, despite the naysayers, will never die... and apparently, neither will Forbidden Broadway. I don't think it should - but I do think it needs a rest.

2 out of 5 stars Do the Math.......2001-03-15

Four CDs cover the first 20 Years of Forbidden Broadway, Gerard Alessandrini's viciously witty satire of New York Theatre. The last year has seen Three new CDs, FB "Cleans Up Its Act" "20th Anniversary Edition" and now "2001 a Spoof Odyssey". Do the math.

Alessandrini is running out of ideas, and is spreading the remaining ones too thin. . Sanitized Time Square - Been there. Disnified Broadway - Done that, and so many times. Asinine casting faux pas, plotless pointless set-monster musicals, and Ethel Merman and Liza. We've heard it all before - and last time, it was funnier.

Now normally when a writer (or director or actor) has truly entertained me on numerous occasions, I'll forgive the odd show that disappoints. This would be the case here except for two things: Alessandrini is in the vicious parody business - he's never spared anyone else Besides, if he's going to actually include couplets like: "If lyrics are no longer witty... Then I don't want to go " he's inviting the pans.

When you hear the AIDA lampoon, you'll be reminded of the dim bulb in Cyrano de Bergerac who taunts the hero with the brilliant witticism: Your nose is very large

Yes, there are a few true Forbidden Broadway tracks on Spoof Odyssey. Dame Judi Dench singing "Why can't Americans do theatre like the Brits?" (with apologies to My Fair Lady), I Hate Ben (with apologies to Kiss Me Kate) and about 1/3 of "Let's Ruin Time Square Again" (no apologies necessary to Rocky Horror which understands how easy it is for good parody to go bad). Oh yes, there is one absolutely true Forbidden Broadway track: TROUBLE - yes, the same Trouble from Volume 3 which was just re-released on the 20th Anniversary compilation - and it's back again with a more hackneyed Robert Preston impersonation and all of 4 words changed. Granted it's one of the better bits, more worthy of rerunning than say, referring to Miss Saigon as Viet-Numb, but oh, he reran that gag too

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The CD I want to lend to everyone . . ........2004-04-27

. . . except that it's the CD I don't want to lend to anyone. As masterful and elegant as anything you'll ever hear, but also highly accessible (in fact I caught my 18-year-old definitely-not-a-baroque-fan brother whistling the first Zelenka aria -- rather spiritedly, too -- after just one incidental hearing). Tafelmusik's playing is a pleasure throughout, for its trademark freshness and immediacy -- I especially enjoy Vivaldi's "String Concerto in C Major" on this disk -- and the arias practically seem to be made for Matthew White. From the lively brilliance of Zelenka, to the gentle "Noli o cara te adorantis" from Vivaldi's "Juditha triumphans" (the words are actually kind of sinister, but could you really cut off the head of anyone who sang to you like this?), to the whole varied set from A. Scarlatti's "Cain" (for pure beauty, just listen to "Miei genitori, addio"), you can only increasingly admire White's unerring musical sense and command -- and of course that stunning, lovely voice.

This is the second album I've owned of Placido Domingo singing Mozart. I first heard him singing some arias from Don Giovanni on the radio, and I was taken aback at the mellowness of his interpretation. He extends this to other Mozart operas on this album. If you're tired of having singers shout Mozart at you, you'll like this album.
