Grease [Enhanced] [Soundtrack]

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
The movie is a 1970s take on 1950s musicals, providing all the kitsch anyone could hope for. It's John Travolta as Danny Zuko as Olivia Newton-John's pompadoured main squeeze, and the kids go crazy. Fresh from his astronomical success with Travolta in Saturday Night Fever, Bee Gee Barry Gibb penned the title track (sung by Frankie Valli). Sha Na Na is over-represented, and actress Stockard Channing struts her, um, versatility, singing a couple of tracks. This has become a touchstone in American culture, and so isn't likely to improve our standing in the world's eyes. Maybe the point is that it's supposed to sound amateurish, but it does manage to eke out some fun, most notably on the hit "You're the One That I Want." --Scott Wilson --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

4 out of 5 stars Several Weak Tracks.......2007-06-27

The only thing holding this album back from being consistentatly a 5 star critic's favorite is the fact that it contains several weak tracks, and the title song Grease is possibly the only legitimate song that will bring back nostalgia for those that liked the movie and the singing in the musical. I always thought they were stuck in the 50s, but they've updated it to like the 70s or maybe even 90s, but still not modern enough for my tastes. The music is well crafted filler to a classic movie that will only date with time.

5 out of 5 stars Throwback music.......2007-05-29

If you hav ever seen the movie than you already know, and if you haven't, then you need to. It is a classic American musical, with great oldies music. Highly recommeded.

5 out of 5 stars Very Upbeat Songs.......2007-05-21

Listening to the music from Grease brings back the good memories of watching the movie. The music is funny (Summer Nights; Beauty School Dropout; Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee; Greased Lighting), touching (There Are Worse Things I Could Do; Hopelessly Devoted To You) and very 70's (Blue Moon; Rock "n" Roll Is Here To Stay; Born To Hand Jive). John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John sing great, but the supporting cast (Stockard Channing, Sha-Na-Na), also contribute to a good sound. Great rock and roll!

4 out of 5 stars Classic nostalgia .......2007-05-03

I of course remember when I was eight years old when Grease came out and I played the singles to death on the turntable. Revisiting now I remember how *cumbersome* it is. The first ten tracks are absolutely essential. They are the strength and reflection of the soundtrack and what makes the movie go.

Any listener should not be remiss about the cumbersome nature of the soundtrack. One can skip over easily the songs they don't like. Not like the ol' turntable vinyl where that convenience was not there. Let's face it, too much Sha-Na-Na is too much Sha-Na-Na.

Overall, it's a great buy for the asking price for those who remember. A versatile Travolta and Newton-John strutted their stuff in a time they could do no wrong. And contributions by Franki Valli, Channing and Avalon make this a good listen.

5 out of 5 stars A feel-good, sing-along soundtrack.......2007-04-14

Although I'm not usually a fan of movie soundtracks, my one big exception is Grease! Who wouldn't love this collection of sing-along songs that brighten your mood no matter when, or how often, you listen to them? Since Grease is also one of my all-time favorite movies, hearing the songs automatically makes me recall the particular scene they correlate with, and I invariably start smiling.

Grease consists of many talented actors and actresses, most of whom could sing as well as they could act. Therefore, each song -- including numerous solos by John Travolta, Oliva Newton-John and Stockard Channing -- is a treat to listen to.

If I were only allowed to bring one CD to the proverbial deserted island, Grease would probably be it! This is one purchase that will pay off, time and time again.

cheesy but fun!

4 out of 5 stars Grease 2.......2007-04-24

The songs sounded just like the movie Grease 2, except for the song "Do it for your Country" ,did not hear the girl singing with the boy like in the movie.

3 out of 5 stars a guilty pleasure.......2007-02-16

GREASE 2 crashed and burned at the box-office, but has built up quite a cult following over the years. The story followed Sandy's intellectual cousin Michael (Maxwell Caulfield), as he attended Rydell High and fell helplessly in love with 'Pink Lady' Stephanie (Michelle Pfeiffer).

Essentially it was the same story as the original "Grease" but the roles were reversed - geeky Michael had to dumb himself down in order to win the affections of Stephanie.

The soundtrack of the film is a load of fun. Both Maxwell Caulfield and Michelle Pfeiffer's singing is quite excellent; and the rest of the cast are clearly having a ball, too.

Lorna Luft is totally adorable with "Reproduction" and "Score Tonight"; not to mention the oh-so-cute "Girl for All Seasons" (the cheesy number that the Pink Ladies perform for the talent show). Michelle Pfeiffer sets the pulses racing with "Cool Rider", and later pulls at the heart-strings with "(Love Will) Turn Back the Hands of Time". Maxwell Caulfield is at his best with "Charades".

The soundtrack album faithfully recreates the numbers just like they are heard in the film - with one exception. Maureen Teefy was unable to make it to the recording session for "Do It for Our Country". Peter Frechette does his best, but the number was written as a duet and Teefy's performance in the film was priceless. I wonder why the duet could not have been lifted directly from the optical film soundtrack. Oh well.

For fans of GREASE 2, this soundtrack album is a smart buy...and at a sweet price, too.

4 out of 5 stars Grease II Rocks.......2007-01-20

Sure, Grease I was fabulous and you got to hear John and Olivia wail, but don't discount Michelle either. I have heard that she disclaims doing this film, but it is one of my favorites with her in a starring role, and whether or not she believes it, she can sing! This is some good and fun music and you can rock right along with Cool Rider or Who's That Guy or any other song on the disc and thoroughly enjoy it! It would even make just as good Karaoke as the original Grease soundtrack! Give it a try and you will love it too.

5 out of 5 stars A Musical score worthy of Broadway!.......2006-11-11

As a fan of great musicals, i can't help but ask myself why no one has ever attempted to make this into a play... It'd be an absolutely spectacular performance, the music is really captivating for what the story represents. The original was wonderful, but the sequel stands alone and personally i think its just as good if not better than the original grease movie. This soundtrack is great especially for people who grew up watching Grease 2, i'd recommend it for any musical fan or anyone who remembers loving the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2007-06-26

I am going through a battle with cancer and I found the music on this album so uplifting and calming - I recommend it to everyone , and especially anyone facing some hard times, this is a great Album.

5 out of 5 stars A Truly Healing CD.......2007-06-19

My mother gave this CD to me, and being in my middle twenties the only experience I have had with Olivia Newton-John is from the movie/musical Grease. To be honest, I was little skeptical about the cheesiness of this CD, but let me say that Olivia blew me away. The mixture between eastern and western religions, as well as melodies, is refreshing. In some of the more eastern influenced songs, the sound of Olivia's voice is almost haunting in a beautiful way. I would highly recommend this CD to everyone from Olivia Newton-John fans to people seeking relaxation through music.

5 out of 5 stars Livvy - still brilliant.......2007-06-12

I, like a lot of these other review-ers, have been an Olivia fan for many many years.. 33 to be exact.
i remember buying my first Livvy cassette - Totally Hot. I think it burnt out (sorry!) after a couple of hundred play sessions.

BUT, I had not heard of this particular album, until a couple of weeks ago. As soon as i did, i was straight onto the website for a listen..

I think it took about 3 minutes to find my c/card & order two copies. One for myself, and one for my "new-age" mother-in-law-to-be. Who, after only knowing Grease), is now a new fan.

It's a brilliant album. whatever your mood.
Thank God CD's should last longer than the old cassettes - cause this one is going to get a huge physical (sorry!) workout.....

Livvy sounds brilliant.

"........AND I THANK YOU!!!!"

5 out of 5 stars GOD what an album !.......2007-06-06

This is one of her best albums in her almost 40 years of her career , nice music which relaxes ur mind , ur heart and soul ...the lyrics are wonderful...Olivia's voice is fantastic in this new age album.
she has proved that she can sing pop, rock ,country, and new age as well ...this album is a real Gaia !i actually bought two cds one for my car and the other one as a gift for my family ( wife and kids)...thanks for OLivia who is still giving us her best talent.

5 out of 5 stars Grease and Gratitude.......2007-06-01

Dear O has rather found her form again in recent years. Her covers album, 'Indigo', which debuted in 2005, was her strongest release in 15 years and 2006's 'Stronger Than Before' was a return to her lovely mid-70's hey day. When Olivia decided to release a 'healing' album that tied in with her body, mind and spirit wellness products, I couldn't hide my lack of excitement. Fearing a reprise of her 1994 self-written and produced 'Gaia' CD, an album filled with clunky lyrics and syruppy melodies, I nearly didn't get this album...

Well, luckily I was hopelessly wrong. This album ranks as one of Olivia's best ever. Over the past 10 years or so, Olivia's voice has suffered a little, but this could have been recorded 25 years ago. It's beautiful.
There are no real standouts, it's all wonderful and totally works as a soothing 60 minute CD with no tracks you'll want to skip.

That at 58 years old Olivia can come up with something of this quality is an inspiration to us all. I've often written her off but have to eat my words here. If the album only had a decent release, some strong airplay, I honestly believe it could go through the roof. Well done, Olivia!

5 out of 5 stars This is the REAL Grease........2007-01-08

Grease, here in its original form, is an adventurous, raw, rowdy, INSIGHTFUL show that paints a very accurate picture of a pivotal moment in American history when rock and roll was giving birth to the Sexual Revolution. Grease is not a silly, brainless 50s parody, but is instead a smart, insightful, alternative piece of theatre (inspired in many ways by HAIR), with real muscle, attitude, rawness, and a thrilling, subversive, over-sexed energy. If you want to hear what Grease SHOULD sound like, if you want to hear the real sound of early rock and roll, get this original 1972 recording. Forget the awful revival, and forget the movie (as fun as it may be) -- THIS is Grease. [...]

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2006-12-30

We have been trying to get our drama teacher to let us do Grease for years (way before I even went to the school) and this year she's finally letting us.

I've always been a fan of Grease whenever it would come on TV I'd watch it and sing to the songs and I always wanted to be Sandy. But, by listening to the soundtrack I've changed my mind into trying out for Marty because "Freddy, My Love" is, in my opinion, the best song on the soundtrack, the only problem, it's an alto song and I'm a soprano.

Anyway, enough about my life, let's talk about the album. As I said before I've always been a Grease fan, but this version has made me love it even more. This original version is way better than the movie version, the songs seem to fall into place better than in the movie (because they were written for the play of course). Actually, the songs NOT in the movie are the best songs in the play, other than "Freddy, My Love" there are "Mooning" sung by Roger and Jan at a picnic, "Raining on Prom Night" (replaced by "Hoplessly Devoted to You" in the play, Sandy sings this song in her room instead of going to the dance as she did in the movie), "Alone at a Drive-in Movie" (replaced by "Sandy" in the movie, basically, it says the same thing as "Sandy" does), and "All Choked Up" (replaced by "You're the One That I Want", I'm kinda glad it was replaced because I like "You're the One That I Want" better).

I hope this helped you, it probably didn't because of all the personal anecdotes I had to put in there. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that it's a good album and worth buying if you're a Grease fan.

5 out of 5 stars Grease, Grit and Parody.......2006-11-18

At some point in the early 1970's, nostaglia for the 1950's started running out of control. At a time when America was dealing with many social changes, somehow the decade of the 1950's became yearned after for
fun, innocence, rock and roll, and postwar prosperity. The realty being it was a decade that also included
economic issues, open descrimination, and very tame music (the name "the quiet generation" was there for a reason).

Grease came to life as a parody of the 1950's nostaglia craze, and it painted a truer, grittier portrait of the late 50's at an urban high school. The movie that came out in 1978, and the Broadway revival of the 90's whitewashed the story, and cleaned up the language so much the original Broadway musical got lost in the shuffle.

The great score is lead by Adrienne Barbaue, Barry Bostwick, and Carol Demas, and a number of songs never made it to the film, including Those Magic Changes, and Freddy My Love. Yes, in the 1950's there still was a draft!. Adrienne's character of Rizzo steals the show with her numbers, Look At Me I'm Sandra Dee, and There Are Worse Things I Could Do, finally the "Bad Girl" is allowed to be human. Summer Nights, It's Raining On Prom Night, and Rock N Roll Party Queen speak to the teenager that remains in all of us.

Enjoy this very real trip into the late 1950's

Ken

5 out of 5 stars Greased Lightning has struck.......2006-09-06

GREASE what a classic. I'm listening to it right now! I recently saw the play and they did the song you're the one that i want instead of all chocked up witch replaces that and in the movie they use that song and so on but the only reason im not mentioning Sandy or Hoplessly Devoted is because those aren't n aturally ever in the play it was made for the movie. This soundtract is still great five stars to the cast writer and composer

5 out of 5 stars The original, stll the best!.......2006-07-22

I saw the original production of Grease and it was hysterical. It was originally intended as an affectionate parody of the 50's and was a laugh riot. Then Hollywood got a hold of it and turned it into the cotton candy, pop fluff that the world see's it as now, totally missing the point (and losing alot of the fun). The original cast led by Barry Bostwick, Adrienne Barbaue and Carol Demas, were a blast! Stick to this version if you like real parody, humorous and true to the 50's rock style.

There's no better example of American pop culture's hall-of-mirrors ethos than producer Alan Carr's relentlessly buoyant 1978 film adaptation of the stage musical Grease. Inspired by that decade's rampant 50's nostalgia, it now paradoxically evokes the campy 70's excesses that spawned it. That sense of recycled decades in collision is underscored repeatedly on this deluxe, double-disc Grease-fest, especially on the set's second disc of bonus materials that spans vintage singles of the title track (its instrumental B-side) and "Greased Lightnin'," some sing-along karaoke tracks, and a handful of alternately slick/techo-savvy remixes (originally produced for the film's 20th anniversary) that are testament to its enduring, era-defying appeal. The original soundtrack itself has been treated to a stellar digital remastering that fills disc one, and remains a joyous monument to camp, sheer ambition, and exuberant nostalgic illusions. Includes a slip-cased, double-fold-out case and new booklet with complete song lyrics. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars You 're The One That I Want.......2007-04-03

The complete Grease experience. This cd is a two disc-set with disc one being the complete soundtrack, while disc two is all bonus material including the popular Grease Megamix. Fans of the movie would want to make this cd an essential part of their music collection.

5 out of 5 stars Prepare to be transported to Summer Nights.......2006-03-26

Well here we are with a great piece of history.

This album has not only captured the spirit of the movie but the essence of a 1970's version of the 1950's. I have seen this play live and yes some things are different. Yet I grew up on the movie. I even find myself singing some of the songs now and then. Of course you will never see me singing "Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee." However I do keep this in my car as great driving music. This album is not you can pick apart and say things like missing songs, in the wrong order etc. It sounds and feels just right. There will be many versions yet this one is the Grease - Deluxe Edition [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED] [SOUNDTRACK] gives you more information about each of the tracks allowing you to feel that you have inside information and to feel that you know more of what went into the making of each song.

5 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack & Fun Extras from an Enduring Musical........2004-07-06

I'm enjoying listening to this great soundtrack that I loved as a child after a long hiatus. I had it on 8-track 25 years ago. So it's fitting that I should get the 25th Anniversary Edition on CD. The 24 songs from the movie are just as everyone remembers them, so I'll talk about the Bonus Disc, which contains 10 alternative versions of the songs plus 2 previously unreleased instrumentals from the film.

Track 1 on the Bonus Disc is an instrumental version of the film's theme, "Grease", written and produced by Barry Gibb. Frankie Valli's voice has been replaced by a saxophone. The chorus is vocal, but the voices are not those in the original song. You could use this as a sing-along version, as it would be easy to sing over the sax. Tracks 2-5 are officially sing-along versions. "Summer Nights" includes the chorus vocals from the film and sounds good. "You're the One That I Want" has new chorus vocals of questionable merit. "Sandy" is a new arrangement. It's not as good as the film version, but you can sing along. Track 6 is the single version of "Greased Lightning" that you may have heard on the radio back in the day. It's differs from the original in that the bad words have been replaced for radio airplay. Tracks 7-8 are previously unreleased instrumentals from the film. "Greased Up and Ready to Go" is lively. Tracks 9-10 are mixes that I occasionally hear on the radio. The "Grease Megamix" and the "Grease Dream Mix" are fun, if awkward. Tracks 11-12 are Martian Remixes of "Summer Nights" and "You're the One That I Want". They retain the original vocals, but set them to a Latin rhythm. They make pretty good dance tracks.

This 2-disc set isn't in a jewel case. The case is paperboard with 4 panels that fold out. This is inside of a clear vinyl slip case on which the tracks are written. This isn't convenient packaging. On the bright side, the case won't crack in the mail. Tucked inside one of the panels is a booklet that contains lyrics and credits.

The "Grease: 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition" is a terrifically fun soundtrack to one of the all-time great movie musicals. And for all those preteen girls who go wild over the movie with each new generation, the bonus material is perfect for parties and horsing around.

3 out of 5 stars If You Love Grease, You'll Love This - Only 1 Major Flaw.......2004-05-15

Disc 1 is like the original album, which I also own. 1 major flaw is that "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing" cuts off at the very end of it! I was upset by this, hence the 3 stars instead of 4. Disc 2 is a lot of fun w/some remixes and sing-a-longs, all in all, I'm pretty happy with it being that I'm a HUGE Grease fan. If you like Grease, you'll love this, it's fun. Too bad when they "remastered" it, they didn't catch there 1 mistake. Oh well, at least I have it on another album.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great sound and great song!.......2007-05-19

I loved the song "A New Day" after hearing it on the radio. I tracked it down and ordered the CD. All the songs are terrific.

5 out of 5 stars Along with the Good Vibrations are my favorites.......2007-05-15

Own it! It's all worth it!
"You are the new day" is my personal favorite song.

4 out of 5 stars My dad loves it.......2007-02-13

If he likes it then I am happy. Not my cup of tea. I like the idea that there where some Beatles tunes. Dad is 57 I am 36 might be the difference in age. NOt sure. Just not my cup of tea

5 out of 5 stars Great Album!.......2006-04-22

I was very amazed when I first heard this album. Their sound is like no other. They are so unique that you can't compare them to other acapella groups.

I can say that their sound is better than a mixed choir because even though the King's Singers is only composed of 6 members. Their sound volume can beat a 30 member choir due to the quality of their voice.

My favorite is "It Was Almost Like A Song" because of the countertenor's very light voice. The baritone part was also awesome as he dominated the scene when he took the melody.

Overall, great album. This has to be one of the King's Singers best albums released. All songs are great that you can't resist missing a moment on listening it.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful singing; clever arrangements.......2002-06-14

I have been a fan of The King's Singers since their debut recording thirty years ago. New Day is one of my favourite albums. It has the terrific optimistic song "New Day," but many other wonderful tracks.

"Can't Buy Me Love" is sung as if it had been written by one of the Renaissance madrigal writers when he was in a very good mood. There are other up tempo tracks like this one, including Abba's "Money, Money, Money" and "The Rhythm of Life," but the CD also includes some romantic, lush singing in songs such as "Three Times A Lady," "The Summer Knows" and "It Was Almost Like A Song."

The clever arrangement of Barry Manilow's "Could It Be Magic?" begins with an extract from a sombre Chopin Prelude in C minor.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Raw, Extra-Greasy Funk from Oakland CA!.......2006-09-20

It's hard to imagine more opposite places in such close proximity than San Francisco and Oakland, especially during the late 1960s/ early 1970s. Witness the contrast between the Summer of Love and Golden Gate Park be-ins versus unemployment and crumbling World War II-era shipyards; grooviness versus gritty urban reality. Also witness the pronounced distinction between the bands of the era: acid-tinged free-form jamming (Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane) versus the working-class howl of the east bay's Creedence Clearwater Revival and the inimitable funk band Tower of Power.
"East Bay Grease" blasts out of the Oakland flats with an edge and intensity that no hippie band could ever have hoped to match. Driven by a tight rhythm section, raw lead vocals (by Rufus Miller, the first of a succession of singers whom, in Spinal Tap fashion, kept getting waylaid by stints in jail, etc.) and of course that signature horn-section, "East Bay Grease" not only sets the prototype for the string of hit albums and singles that was to follow, but also has its own completely original, unrefined but virtuosic sound that, I believe, sets it at the top of TOP's discography.
Highlight tracks include "Knock Yourself Out," "The Price" and "Back On The Streets Again," which topically could have been recorded in the present era (certain parts of Oakland not having changed much since the day). Unlike other reviewers, I also like "Sparkling In The Sand," which may not seem to fit in at first glance but actually sets the template for their later classic ballads (i.e., "You're Still A Young Man").
And of course, there is only one Steve "The Funky Doctor" Kupka, whose gifts to the baritone sax are immeasurable.

4 out of 5 stars Don't Play This One For Your Parents....Yipes!.......2006-08-13

Most music listeners know about the hit-making years of this legendary band, with whom I gradually developed some personal connections during their heyday. But not everyone has heard this - their very first commercial release - where it all began. Produced by David Rubinson and released in 1970 on music impresario Bill Graham's independent San Francisco label, this record signaled the end of an era as far as musical approaches were concerned. I was introduced to this band through this record by one of my young musical peers, who loved springing new things on those he knew could really get into something "different." Well...for 1970, this was very different from anything I'd heard on records up to that time, for sure! Raw, muscular, horn-driven R&B/Funk with gritty vocals that was more derived from southern-styled 60's Soul instead of the sweeter, more pop - oriented R&B sounds that dominated the airwaves of the day and vastly different from the psychedelic sounds of the rock bands of that era. Recorded basically 'live' in the studio, with only a minimal amount of overdubbing and remixing; representing what they sounded like then, in live performance mode; this music grabs you and refuses to let you go! Of course, the band eventually moved up to the major leagues with the switch to the Warner Bros. label in 1972 where they became more polished and turned out the best of their output; mainly during the first half of the 1970's, with their own sound and style of funk. And there always have been and probably always will be debates about who was their best front man and lead vocalist(they've gone thru almost a dozen - as close as I can remember, including ones who didn't even make it onto records with the group). I've heard them in live performance more times than any other artist I've ever listened to, and the many individual players who have passed through their ranks all attest to the joy of playing in this most unique ensemble. They have carved out a special place in the music world that is all their own and others have imitated their formula; yet, they still stand alone. But this record is always refreshing to go back and listen to for just pure enjoyment with no real commercial leanings and it served as an indicator of what was to come, in the next decade, when self - contained bands pretty much enjoyed their best popularity and success.

5 out of 5 stars Pure unrefined FUNK!.......2004-11-02

I had this album on vinyl in the early 70s as a kid, and even then I knew it was something different. "Back on the Streets Again" has some of the tightest horn grooves ever heard. "Sparkling in the Sand" defies categorization -- despite it's slow tempo, it's not so much a ballad as it is a nine minute cruise, with waves of sound washing over you. The diversity of this band was amazing!

5 out of 5 stars You Will Knock Yourself Out!.......2004-08-16

A word of warning Tower Of Power's cebut album is NOT the
least bit smooth or soft! From "Knock Yourself Out" on 'East Bay Grease' is filled with smelly horns, gutbucket rhythm and very
sandpapery singing. It actually owes more to the mutant horn
rock grooves of Blood,Sweat & Tears,Electric Flag and even Chicago then James Brown or Kool & The Gang. But the rhythm knows
it's buisness and that makes this album a dirving slice of gritty, hard core east coast funk! The plaintive "Sparkling In The
Sane" is the slowest song on the album and it doesn't even come
close to being soft-rather like a longish psychedelic soul groove with fleeting vocals.Any way you take it 'East Bay Grease' is very impressive stuff!

5 out of 5 stars TOP RULES.......2004-07-24

AWESOME CD! TOP's first CD. One of the best, too. With "Knock Yourself Out" a GREAT song. And with Skip Mesquites fantastic flute playing on "Sparkling in the Sand" and Emilio Castillos awesome lead on "The Skunk, The Goose, and the Fly", this CD is a must have.

1 out of 5 stars You'll be disappointed.......2006-09-02

Not the original artists. Very weak versions of beloved songs by marginal to downright bad vocalists.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty good musical mix.......2006-03-10

Lots of great and clear vocals. I was looking for a musical mix and this has a nice sampling of many major songs but also some more recent stuff. I haven't purchased an import before but I would do it again if the opportunity presented itself. It is somewhat annoying to have three cds when I think it could have fit onto two. Still, more than I have complaints, I have compliments about it.

3 out of 5 stars Sha Na Na rocks but this album isn't their best.......2004-07-25

This album wasn't even relesed by the band, just put out by previous record labels. If you want some real, studio recorded, Sha Na Na, check out their Rock and roll dance party, and of course the Grease soundtrack. Their website (shanana dot com) has a list of their tour dates, which trust me (i saw them last week in danville, ca) still rocks.

2 out of 5 stars Sha Na Na YES! ...This CD NO!.......2003-11-20

I do not want to be redundant. Read the other reviews given they are well done...these guys have talent and have always been able to walk the fine line between serious rock performer and a send up of the rock stars of the 50's and 60's. That is their genius. Unfortunately, it gets lost on this CD which has mediocre sound quality and incorrect tempo for some of the songs. Buy Sha Na Na CDs, just not this one!

1 out of 5 stars Major Disappointment!.......2002-12-30

As a huge fan of the movie "Grease," I was looking forward to this CD. I used to watch the Sha Na Na variety show in the '70s and have enjoyed their cover versions on the soundtrack for the last 24 1/2 years. But what a disappointment it turned out to be. First of all, it's not advertised...but about half of the tracks are live. Secondly, the sound isn't all that great. Now I'm sure (as the previous reviewer stated) that the group is a terrific live act. However, I don't think this translates well to record and CD. In this instance, I would have preferred the polished sound of the studio versions.

3 out of 5 stars No Substitute For the Real Thing.......2002-08-18

I saw these guys in concert back in the early Seventies when I was in college. They put on a heckuva show and provide more than competent covers of classic Fifties material. I even bought a few of their albums before I started buying the originals. Sha Na Na were always more enjoyable in concert than on record. Don't get me wrong. These guys aren't hacks, but they bring nothing new to these songs. My advice--stick with the original artists. But catch them live if you get the chance.
