I can't get it out of my head.......2003-12-04

We were first introduced to Les Dix Commandements by our French exchange student, who gave it to us the day he arrived. That was three years ago, and we have played it scores of times since. The music is haunting and powerful - and spiritually challenging for those who understand the lyrics. The final cut, "L'envie d'Aimer," was a huge hit in France and was covered by Celine Dion on her "A New Day Has Come" album, although the English translation "The Greatest Reward" is so far from the French that you can recognize it only by the music.

"L'envie d'aimer" the final track on this exquisite album is performed by the troupe of Les Dix Commandements. This one track alone has the emotion to cry out for an anglicised rendition by either the cast, or covered by Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion. It would be an enormous seller. The rest of the album has a similar soundscape to the works of the Cirque Du Soleil. If you are fans of Zucchero, Eros Ramazzotti, Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion, then this will appeal to you. This album is one of the most in demand soundtracks in French holiday territories which is where I was introduced to it. Give this a listen once and you will be mesmerised, you won't be disappointed.

I wanted better.......2001-07-11

I'm a gigantic fan of Notre Dame de Paris and especially Romeo et Juliette, so when I ordered Les Dix Commandements, I was hoping for yet another extraordinary French musical. It was not to be.

Too much of this is screechy fingernail on a blackboard type vocals. Too much of this is that atonal Egyptian type flutey stuff. I found the song about slaves finally being free just a little bit too trite. I have to admit that I've only listened to this once...so perhaps this stuff will grow on me. But Notre Dame and R&J hit me at once as exceptionally brilliant. No such luck this time. This work suffered immensely by comparison..and I guess it isn't really fair to make such comparisons. Just a word of warning...if you can only buy one or two of these popular French Musical Original Cast CDs, spend your money on something else...Romeo et Juliette is unbelievably gorgeous, and Notre Dame de Paris is classically stunning. Les Dix Commandements isn't exactly God-awful, but it certainly fails to inspire.
