Jimi Hendrix's second album doesn't resonate through rock history the way its gatecrashing predecessor, Are You Experienced?, does. In places, it almost seems as if Hendrix is cruising, albeit sublimely. Yet it's a vital album, containing some of rock's molten milestones. There's the fluid psychedelia of "Castles Made of Sand," the viciously funky "Little Miss Lover," and the so-beautiful-it-hurts "Little Wing." Hendrix really hits altitude with "If 6 Was 9," where he waves his "freak flag high" over a tidal wave of guitar and a cacophonous army of Moroccan flutes, and he ends with "Bold As Love," based around Hendrix's typically far-fetched hankering for the axis of the planet to be tilted, thereby transforming life on earth. It works up into a head-melting frenzy of distorted guitar, a precursor to the staggeringly expansive leap forward he would take with 1968's Electric Ladyland. Hendrix dreamed the impossible and achieved it on his guitar. --David Stubbs

5 out of 5 stars Shut Up and Put Yer Headphones On.......2007-06-04

I first heard this when it was first released on vinyl in 1967 and it was at a friend's apt. We were all musicians and we took turns listening to the opening with headphones. Today we have 5.1/7.1 surround etc; it's impossible to overstate what the creative use/mix of the stereo field did. To hear instruments sounding like voices swirling to fro left to right with Jimi's voice coming out of the top of your head was a mind altering Experience;pun intended. So let the Experience of this second effort take over and run through you through some great headphones and while defocusing use the album art as the Mandela, even with the mistakes and warts, it was intended to be. That was 40 years ago and it's as stunning a work today as it was then and it'll light your chakras up like a pinball.

5 out of 5 stars The Earth Turned On His Axes.......2007-05-27

Like Terry Gilliam, Hendrix at his worst was still better than everybody else at their best. Astoundingly, Hendrix secured his place high at the top of the rock guitar pantheon on the strength of just three albums, recorded in rapid succession. Axis: Bold As Love, is the middle child, or perhaps, the redheaded stepchild. It can't touch Are You Experienced? or Electric Ladyland - but it's still pretty darn hot.

Rushed out under battle conditions, Axis shows some ragged edges. The revolting cover, stupid even by standards of the day, was the result of a mix-up. Hendrix wanted the cover art to reflect his American Indian ancestry - the record company folks in England heard Indian and, (like Columbus in reverse) thought Indian Indian. Indian religion was all the fashion then, so it seemed like a natural. All this, however, does not explain away the unadulterated ugliness.

More harrowing still is the cab ride story. In the middle of recording the album, Hendrix took the masters with him to play at a party he was attending, forgetting them in a cab. (One must wonder if his absent-mindedness was natural or enhanced.) Realizing what had happened, Chas Chandler had to remix half the album in 11 hours - astonishing considering the amount of studio wizardry featured.

The writing is off throughout, lyrics were never Jimi's strongest suit, here it shows. Even the wonderful Castles Made Of Sand has writing that would have been flagged in a high school poetry class. The kicker of the litter is You Got Me Floatin' - soaring guitar and driving beat. The one perfect song, often overlooked, is One Rainy Wish, which evokes a very particular atmosphere and then morphs into something amazing, all in the space of 3:40. Little Wing is a perennial, lovely, and one of the rare Hendrix songs often covered. If 6 Was 9, and Bold As Love, showcase Hendrix in fine form. Both are anthems of the day, and both seem to keep switching gears, every time you think they couldn't be any more thrilling, they kick up another level.

Hendrix adapted and changed at lightning speed, a lifetime of evolution compressed into a few years. Axis is a flawed album, but as the necessary bridge between two near-perfect extremes, it is fascinating and satisfying.

5 out of 5 stars Kowabunga!!.......2007-05-08

When I first heard snatches of "Are You Experienced", Hendrix' first album on Philly's premier, local, underground FM rock station of the time, I couldn't believe that here was a black, American expatriate, living in England, producing what had to be ARCHE-typical California psychedelic hard rock/funk like no other person before or after him! There was a confidence in Hendrix' singing/songwriting and guitar playing that NO ONE has equaled...white, black, hispanic or otherwise, since! Though he played sideman to people like Little Richard and James Brown, he was a better musician than ten of those two put together, though their influence on him was obvious. Here was a man who took three idioms: soul/R&B, rock and psychedelia, and melded them together in a unique consumme that no one has been able to duplicate, though Cream and Arthur Lee's Love came closer than most.

"Axis" is a little more introspective than "AYE"...it's like Jimi was telling us: "Here I am, at least now...whaddya think?" You hear his feelings about relationships in songs like "Little Miss Lover", "Little Wing", "Wait Until Tomorrow" and "You Got Me Floatin'". You hear his contemplations on spirituality and sci-fi in "EXP", "Bold As Love" and "Spanish Castle Magic" and social musings in "If 6 Was 9".

His arrangements were original, forceful, cocky and catchy. There was nobody else like Jimi Hendrix...anywhere! And it's a shame we lost him so soon after he hit it big...in fact, like so many OTHER rockers from the Woodstock era, becoming a legend by the time his second album, this one, had come out!

In one year's span of time, we lost Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Mama Cass Elliott and Janis Joplin...! Now Joplin, as far as I'M concerned, was no great loss, though by no means am I glad she's dead, but Hendrix and Morrison were truly stellar talents that made the world of art and music poorer with their passing. There were TONS more talented female rock singers than Joplin out there and she was the first to admit it, (Mama Cass being one of them!) But Hendrix, perhaps the greatest black crossover artist ever, and Morrison...the musical reincarnation of William Blake himself, THEY left a gaping hole where some truly great music had been!

Maybe if somebody can perfect cloning before their DNA rots TOO thoroughly....

5 out of 5 stars TIME DOES NOT GO BY... Neither in the SPANISH CASTLES MAGIC (nor these all time rock classic album).......2007-03-24

Do you still think any other musicians improved Jimi Hendrix's guitar feeling and technique??. Maybe you can name a few owning excellent skills and probably unforgettable trademark effects in their playing. But JIMI's music is not only fireworks. I strongly recommend you to listen to this remastered album, which by the way. was recorded IN THE LATE SIXTIES!!!. Then you realize why he is still the best rock guitarrist...and composer and singer and performer, but above all guitar hero. Hey!, please do not forget that unfortunately JIMI HENDRIX only recorded three official albums "Electric Layland", "Are You Experienced?" and this "Axis:Bold As Love". The rest of his discography are good profitable businesses for the heirs of its excellent legacy (of course with some exceptions in form of a pair of testimonial live recordings). Also, the best point on this re-issue is the respect (and improvement) on all the original texts and graphics from the original albums. Needless to say that the audio remastering is a plus.

    Amazon.com essential recording

The "Essential" Purcell? Well, you could get a bunch of critics to argue about that for a few days, but in the meantime, here is a sampler of highlights from the King's Consort's three admirable Purcell series: the Complete Odes and Welcome Songs, Complete Anthems and Services, and Complete Secular Solo Songs. There are, of course, some of Purcell's most-performed pieces (which probably are "essential"): Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, "Sound the trumpet" from Come, ye sons of Art, Rejoice in the Lord alway (the "Bell Anthem," named for the string figure at the opening that sounds like pealing bells), the gently patriotic "Fairest isle, all isles excelling" (sung by a miscast James Bowman), and a selection from the funeral music for Queen Mary. There are also some delightful surprises--particularly among the little-known secular songs and church music. The plaintive "O fair Cedaria" gets a lovely performance by Barbara Bonney (a singer not usually associated with Purcell); tenor Rogers Covey-Crump (possibly the ideal high tenor for Purcell) sings the enchanting "If music be the food of love"; the church anthems "Let mine eyes run down with tears" and "Remember not, O Lord, our offences" have some startling harmonies as daring as any Monteverdi ever wrote. If you're unfamiliar with Purcell, this reasonably priced disc is a good place to start exploring without a big initial investment. --Matthew Westphal

5 out of 5 stars The beauty of the songs brings tears to my eyes.......2002-08-21

Absolutely beautiful baroque music! The arrangament, singing and instrumentation is superb. It is too bad that Henry Purcell is not as widely known as Bach, because he should be recognized equally well."The Sparrow and the Gentle dove" is alone worth the price of the album! I can not stop playing it!

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2001-10-31

Like in his renditions of Handel's oratorios, Robert King manages to bring a freshness and strenght to Purcell's music that I had seldom heard before. This CD also features some of the best performers of early music in the world. My favourite tracks are Oh, Fair Cedaria, sung by the multi-talented Barbara Bonney; Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, sung by Gillian Fisher; She Loves and she Confesses too, sung by the wonderful Susan Gritton; and Welcome, Welcome Glorious Morn, sung by Rogers Covey-Crump. The only track I didn't find absolutely wonderful is Fairest Isle, sung here by James Bowman. Don't get me wrong, I generally love Mr Bowman, I think that his performance in Mr Purcell's Most Admirable Composures (also conducted by Robert King) makes it another essential Purcell recording; but I find that Fairest Isle was much better done elsewhere, particularly by Christopher Hogwood and Barbara Bonney.

These songs aren't only beautiful, they're also poignant, sweet and unpretentious. I think that it will be very clear to anyone who listens to this recording that Mr Purcell was one of the finest composers that ever lived.

5 out of 5 stars Be Welcome then, great Sirs (and Mesdames)........2001-10-20

If anyone has benefitted from the reversion in the last three or so decades to period instruments and historical reconstruction, it is Henry Purcell. Before, he was merely great, the peerless word-setter in the English language, a virtuoso of boundless range, a professional composer whose offical commissions were always imbued with personality and invention. But period instrumentation has added to this a greater depth, an other-worldly texture of sound. With his intricate, multi-part vocal writing, his preference for low, rumbling instruments such as the bass viol and the strange and remarkable theorbo, as well as his often sombre and low-key subject matter and treatment, Purcell creates a round, glowing, humming sound as pregnantly full as dub reggae.

This has an extraordinary effect on the listener. Whereas Bach, with his mathematical abstractions, sounds universal and timeless, Purcell's music takes the listener back 300 years, back to different ways of thinking about, feeling about and addressing things we still think etc. about today - death, love, friendship. The emotion is timeless, but the music's beauty is alien, THEIRS, hence its preciousness.

A lot of intelligence has gone into the unity of this compilation, beginning with two Welcomes (to the dawn and to the listener, in this case a King), and ending with thoughts of evening, death and a Baroque 'Thank you for the music'. These are bright, fanfare-like works, but the predominant mood is slow, ruminative, quiet. The selection covers the wide range of Purcell's oeuvre, from opera and funeral marches to secular songs and odes, and includes his most famous vocal works - Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, sung by Gillian Fisher, and never more evocative of pagan loss and death; the massive 'Bell Anthem', with its ingenious opening symphony and joyful antiphon; and a miraculously serene 'Evening Hymn', Dido's opposite, death indicating hope, the treble voice swirling over the heavy ground bass like the soul released from the inert body.

it might seem quixotic to choose highlights from an exemplary collection of highlights, but the entry of the strings washing over the serene repetition of 'Be Welcome then, great Sir' always makes my heart stop still, while the musical picture of 'Bold Honour', the 'noisy Nothing, stalking shade', blocking the poet's amorous intentions in 'She loves and confesses too', adds a chilling hint of life's transience to a bouyantly bawdy song.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Purcell Disc .......2000-11-30

With this album director and Purcell expert Robert King provides the listener with an excellent introduction to the composer's vocal works. The pieces presented here were taken from Mr. King's recordings of 'The Complete Odes and Welcome Songs', 'The Complete Anthems and Services', 'The Complete Secular Solo Songs' and diverse anthology discs. King, his wonderful soloists and musicians do the brilliance of Purcell's music fully justice. Whether he was commissioned by royalty, the church or theatre, Purcell shone in all areas. This disc certainly demonstrates the variety and originality of his craft, not to speak of his uncanny ability of setting words to music.

An outstanding Purcell offering. With a beautiful perfomance by Barbara Bonney of 'Oh, fair Cedaria'. Susan Gritton is equally captivating in 'She loves and she confesses too'. Gillian Fisher's rendition of the famous 'Dido's Lament' is haunting and poignant. Further an intelligent and brilliant 'Hosanna to the highest' by Michael George. James Bowman and Michael Chance sparkle in the countertenor duet 'Sound the trumpet' (from 'Come Ye sons of Art away'). And I should not forget to mention the joyous, luminous performance of the beautiful 'Bell Anthem'. To name but a few favourites, only James Bowman's 'Fairest Isle' was a disappointment.

Those who are familiar with Purcell's music will get an excellent disc with some of his most beloved works. If you are new to Purcell, this is, as already said a great introduction. Which might be the incentive to further explorations of Purcell.

    Album Description

"...Infinite possibility, if I can only break down this fourth wall/I'm living in a room for everyone, finding my space under the sun..."and so goes the title track of Ari Gold's sophomore release, Space Under Sun (Released Nov 2003, independently over the internet on Gold 18 Records). In a market saturated with manufactured stars who for the most part are perfectly content churning out the same old cliché's, Gold is determined to shake pop up and find a space for his music in a postmodern world. "I wanted to make an album that I didn't have when I was growing up," Ari told Larry Flick of Billboard magazine in 2001 regarding his first album as an openly gay pop singer which would later take home the Outmusic Award for Outstanding Debut Recording. With Space Under Sun Gold goes even further musically & lyrically and creates a pop landscape that goes beyond boundaries and labels.

After landing on Top Of The Pops with DJ Luck and MC Neat on the UK single, "I'm All About You" (Island Universal) co-written and produced by hitmaker Desmond Child, Gold began working on Space Under Sun. He collaborated with top notch industry songwriters and producers such as Peter Amato (Leanne Rimes), Marsha Malamet (Luther Vandross, Chaka Khan), MAJOR (Lamya), Mr. Khalil (Res), Steve Skinner (Rent, Bette Midler), Soong Lee (Allure) recording all over the globe from Atlanta, Miami, LA and NYC to London and Israel. Gold describes the album as "an intergalactic hybrid of 80's and contemporary R&B, spacey pop, and funky smooth soul." Gay City News stated that "Gold pushes the envelope as much as a rapper like Eminem does." Although instead of lyrics that are fag bashing and woman hating, the subject matter ranges from a guy and a girl (Kendra Ross, currently featured on the latest CD by Talib Kweli) fighting over the same man ("He's On My Team") to getting caught having sex in public with another man by the cops ("Caught), to diva worship ("Fan-tastic"), a matter that is crucial to many a gay man's evolution, seeking independence and self actualization ("More Than Enough," "Back To me") to romantic and sexual intimacy ("Funk That Ship," "Intimate.") There is also the tender ballad "Bashert (Meant To Be) in which Gold incorporates his Jewish identity of having grown up as an orthodox Jew. The 13 track CD includes a downloadable music video of "Wave Of You" directed by Guy Guido which was shot as a tribute to the late great photographer Herb Ritts as well as an mp3 of "Review My Kisses" a song co-written and produced by Desmond Child. Gold will continue performing in NYC where Time Out magazine said that he was a "smash success...wowing the local music scene" and Backstage called his musicianship, "flawless" as well as around the globe to promote his new CD.

1 out of 5 stars One Of The Worst..........2007-03-06

This is truely one of the worst Cd's I have ever listened too. Sure it's great that he is gay and actually singing about being gay rahter than closeting himself, but that does not make for a great CD. The songs are generic and bland with no beat whatsoever, his voice is weak and emotionless, and the lyrics are chessy silliness. The hooks themselves don't even exsist. Once I got to the train wreck that was He's On My Team, (a lame version of The Boy Is Mine by Brandy and Monica), I knew there was no hope. Stay away from this CD at all costs. Not even one song was ok to listen too. I hope he gets better material next time because I do want to be a fan of his, but this is trash.

4 out of 5 stars Ari is Gold.......2006-08-23

Ari Gold's Space under Sun CD is truly delightful, a great R&B sound. It is a pity he is not or appears not to be known in Australia. I am looking forward to a new CD from him and regret that his debut CD is not available, otherwise I would definitely purchase it.

4 out of 5 stars GOLD IS GOLD .......2006-08-21

REPETITIVE BEATS AND MOST SOUND EXACTLY ALIKE THE DUET IS WORTH THE PRICE DEFINETLY CATERS TO GAY CLIENTEL WHICH IS WHY I PURCHASED MANY OF ARI GOLDS RECORDED MATERIAL...THE MIXES CD WAS THE BEST

5 out of 5 stars Dancy, Sexy, Romantic and... Spiritual!? :D.......2006-04-01

Ari Gold is amazing, his looks are good but his voice is incredible, whoever said he couldn't sing needs to get earwax removed! This sexy album has many dance tracks and some tastefully arousing gay material in "Funk That Ship" and about being caught having gay sex in "Caught". But Ali is alot more than a down and dirty songster, his music has soul with the romantic and holy Intimate where he declares he has "waited for the longest time to commit this crime, to be intimate with you... Baby can't you see I'm so in love with you" and Spiritual and Romantic, Bashert (Meant To Be) maintaining what seems like beautiful beliefs in your soulmate being out there and God. Also "Back to Me" can be interpreted many ways one of which I take as taking back your virginity, your self-worth or/and your humility and humanity. He's sounds amazing, he's dancy, sexy, raunchy, spiritual and deep! Wow, how many albums combine all that that! An incredible R&B, and that doesn't begin to describe his style, gay singer and album.

4 out of 5 stars The forgotten Hendrix album.......2004-12-18

Axis: Bold As Love (1968.) Jimi Hendrix Experience's second album.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience took the world by storm with their 1967 debut, Are You Experienced. Hendrix had earlier worked as a session musician for artists like Little Richard, but it quickly became obvious that he now had the potental to become a rock legend in his own right. The hard-rocking psychedelia of his first album was something masterful in its own right, so it was only proper that the band release a follow-up album. And in 1968, Axis: Bold As Love was released. Read on for my review of Hendrix's sophomore effort.

This album is another excellent release from Hendrix. It's not as good as Are You Experienced (in my opinion, anyway), but it's still a solid album as only Hendrix could put out. The album spawned Hendrix classics like Little Wing, If 6 Was 9, and Castles Made Of Sand. It's not surprising that so many fans of his praise these songs - they're nothing short of excellent. But once again, Jimi manages to serve up more than just rockers that would become catchy hit singles. Spanish Castle Magic, You Got Me Floatin', and the title track go to show that an artist's hits are not necessarily their finest compositions. Even though Jimi's guitar playing is the highlight of this or any Jimi Hendrix recording, his backing musicians also do an excellent job. Another excellent thing about this recording is that it's not nearly as raw as the debut in terms of the tracks and production. Although I personally prefer the debut, Axis still stands as a solid album that blows away the work of many of the other artists of the day.

The most common version of this album available in America (as of December 17, 2004) is the remaster. These remasters are great because they improve the sound quality and even give us greatly expanded liner notes. Unfortunately, unlike the Are You Experienced reissue, this one doesn't feature any bonus tracks! Why not? Hendrix has a ton of rare and hard to find stuff that would have been great to use as bonus material. Oh, well.

To put it simply, Axis is an album that every Jimi Hendrix fan needs to add to their collection. If you're new to Hendrix, though, start with a hits compilation or the Are You Experienced album. By listening to one of those first, you'll be able to appreciate the work on Axis all the more. Final verdict? Buy this album.

5 out of 5 stars Okay, Axis! Here we come!.......2003-06-12

This, of course, is Jimi Hendrix second album. It's not as immediately accessible as his first album, but it's great in it's own way. It just takes a little longer to grow on you. Hendrix continued to redefine what a guitar could do, in his own inimitable way. It's great, but it.

At the price, anyone is a fool not to own it, and give it lavishly as gifts. Its gorgeous, lush and fabulous! Everyone that hears it in our home, falls in love with it!

5 out of 5 stars This truly is essential!.......1999-10-23

What a brilliant idea from one of our leading record companies! On this disc, they have assembled a programme of highlights from their vast collection of choral, vocal, orchestral, and solo instrumental music that is very satisfying. As with most CDs of this sort, it is a case of some tracks not appealing as much as others- I for instance am a lover of choral music so the gorgeous renditions of Stanford's "Magnificat" by St. Paul's Cathedral Choir or John Sheppard's divine motet "Libera Nos" by the Sixteen are obvious preferences of mine. However, whether you seek dyed-in-the-wool orchestral classics as Haydn's "Surprise" Symphony, less familiar works performed by period artists (such as "'E irei Madr'a Vigo" by ancient Spanish composer Martin Codax), or snippets of breathtaking instrumental solos (such as the rousing performance of Lefebure-Wely's "Sortie in E flat" which is sadly only an excerpt), this disc is bound to have something on it for you. And all of it is finely recorded.

Stacy "Acacia" Smith and Lisa "Jaz" Teaney are two impossibly gorgeous women who know how to make music that can be similarly described. Their energetic (if thin) singing plus the robust musicianship that anchors their songs (especially "Magic Carpet Ride") equals what should have been a long and successful career as a formidable pair of freestyle dance divas. Unfortunately, for the duo's next album, Jaz was replaced by a less talented (and less attractive) partner who just couldn't do as much to carry that album to the heights that this one was taken to.

5 out of 5 stars A great debut album that sounds better every time.......2006-05-22

I was living in CA when the Bardeux debut album was released; what a breath of fresh air every time I put it in the cd player. With at least 5 singles that were released, you couldnt help but sing, put the top down and cruise the coastline, and 'dance in the wind' with Acacia and Jazz. 'Magic carpet ride' was a fabulous debut single and is a great introduction to the ladies. 'When we kiss' was a smash and perhaps the best song on the album. Im taken to a new place every time I hear that horn and those keys coupled with A and Js vocals. Each song on this album has its own identity there is no filler here either, any song would have made a great single release. 'Caution' was never released as a single and is one romantic little song, one of my favorites. 'Three time lover' stands out with the lower register vocals and A and J handle it very well. 12" singles abound, videos on MTV2 (only 2 if you can find them) I saw them perform at least 5 times in the Bay Area; they were warm, engaging, appreciative of fans, took pictures and signed autographs till there was noone left to sign for ..I wish they could have stayed together for a 2nd release. I dont know where Acacia and Jazz are today, but rest assured they gave me some of the best times and memories of my life ..

4 out of 5 stars Good first album! .......2005-07-10

Bardeux made two good albums in 1988 and 1989, then later vanished to oblivion. But this first album was a smartly done album of dance music. I liked Magic Carpet Ride and several dance numbers. But one song, which was a top 20 hit in spring 1988 is one that I still talk about. It's When We Kiss as Bardeux raps on this song over sparse Casio-like keyboards. To me, it's like the female answer to LL Cool J's '87 song I Need Love, the first rap ballad to be a major hit. It's done in nearly the same kind of romantic style of LL, but with a female touch. It still sounds sexy and seductive and I hope that it ends up on some future '80s compilation CDs. Maybe when the second half of the '80s turns 25 years old, it will turn up on them. This song is really the true testament of that duo's short lived run in music. And if they're reading this, it was one of the best songs to come out of the '80s. People call short lived artists one hit wonders, and I detest that, but Bardeux should be credited for doing their thing and getting their music out there to the masses.

5 out of 5 stars Full of gems........2007-05-12

If you are a Chanticleer purist and are turned off by the idea of someone else singing with them, I can tell you that you will miss out on a large number of some of Chanticleer's best recorded tracks ever by passing up this CD. The tracks with Dawn Upshaw are in the minority on this disc and do not detract from the majority which are of Chanticleer only. Also, it must be stated that while many may still not be a fan of the concept upon listening, she performs wonderfully with them and even blends well at many points! I urge you to at least give it a chance.

Anyway, on to the music. This recording is literally overflowing with impeccably chosen arrangements and compositions, all of which encompass a wonderfully peaceful holiday ambiance. It is full of tracks which are worth the price of the disc alone. Joe Jennings' gorgeous arrangement of the Huron Carol, the wonderfully different arrangement of Noel Nouvelet, and The First Nowell are among the many highlights. However, Die Stimme des Kindes by the Finnish composer Mantyjarvi, is the crown jewel of this disc. It is a brilliant and extremely haunting piece of music full of gorgeous polychordal harmonies and it is performed with astonishing intensity and accuracy! Also to be found here is one of the very best gospel/spiritual arrangements Chanticleer has ever done - Jerusalem In The Morning will become an instant favorite with anyone.

I was very disappointed when I listened to this CD. I should have paid more attention to the fact that there was another artist performing with the group before I ordered it. I am sorry I bought it.

For nearly 25 years Chanticleer has performed a large and wide variety of music, from Gregorian Chant to the most modern fare. With its seamless blend of 12 male voices, ranging from counter-tenor to bass, the ensemble has earned international renown as "an orchestra of voices". Chanticleer was founded in 1978 by tenor Louis Botto, and was named after the 'clear-singing' rooster in Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales'. This CD offers a wide variety of choral gems, some well-known; some traditional;some in French, in German; most in English. But all of them are performed with great skill as well as exquisite tone quality. Dawn Upshaw is an added plus on this disc. Just commenting on a few of them that captured my interest:
"A Christmas Round"/"Today The Virgin". Sir John Tavener joined the Russian Orthodox Church in 1977 which had a tremendous impact on his compositions. The brief text for 'A Christmas Round' is from the Orthodox Liturgy for Christmas Day. 'Today the Virgin' is a strophic setting of a text by Mother Thekla, an Orthodox nun, who has provided him with the libretti for several of his major works. In typical Russian Orthodox style, a drone is employed in the bass, and the upper voices move in parallel fifths and octaves.
"Es ist ein Ros entsprungen" (Lo, How an ever-blooming rose).Hugo Distler combines an extensive use of rediscovered forms and genres, and a very effective use of word-paintings in his music. Based on the famous tune of the same name, his setting resembles a fantasia, finally submerging the theme in rhythmic complexity as the number of voice parts expands from 4 to as many as 8. The text for the soprano that is laid over verse 3 is taken from the 'Magnificat' (Luke I:46-55).
"Die Stimme des Kindes" (The voice of the child) Finnish composer,Jaako Mantyjarvi adopts influences from a number of styles and periods, fusing them into his own idiom. This gently-rocking setting for eight-part men's chorus uses lush tone clusters to impart a late-
    Romantic sentiment.
This album is a thinking-man's joy!!!!We all love the familiar carols, but it's so refreshing to hear some new ones. This group is certainly reminiscent of the "King's Singers" who preceded them; both excellent in every way!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Christmas amoungst the stars!.......2004-10-19

This must be what the angels in heaven sound llike when they sing. The voices of Chanticleer blend so beautifully that it seems as if one voice is singing 12 parts. This album is a serious must have for all those who consider music an important part of the holidays.

There is one fly in the ointment though. No disrepect to Dawn Upshaw. Her voice is beautiful but we purists don't like to hear anyone sing with Chanticleer. We even find it difficult to adjust when instrumentation is used. Hearing a piano or flute throws us into a talespin. We just don't want anything to interupt the beauty of the voices. Let's face it, how many great groups are there out there who can sing without music let alone hold a note for more than 10 seconds without wandering off the note into oblivion!

The First Nowell is sung as it was meant to be sung when it is written so long ago. Lovely harmony but not over done or severly complicated. Most of the beauty is in the message it gives. No need to over sing it.

Die Stimmes des Kindes (The Voice of the Child) is gently sung to perfection with an other worldly, etheral quality. A haunting but gentle, sweet, harmony sings the last line here, "Ein schlafend Kind! (A sleeping child), they sing (Almost as wonderous as the child Himself. Almost!) of the Christ child. Countertenors above while the basses support them as they sing a final "o still!" I literally could not move as it ended. In a trance, I somehow found my remote and hit the replay button again and again. How in the world can this music be written by mere humans? Hmmmmmm, not of this earth, you think?

The Three Kings is something I haven't heard before. The music, written by Healy Willan in 1928, includes text from a poet named Laurence Housman (1856-1959). I thought I was going to hear a new rendition of "We Three Kings." WRONG!!! As the kings arrive to the place that the star of Bethlehem lead them, the last line of the song invites the kings to "come in ye kings and kiss the feet of God." The countertenors sing angelic while the lower voices sing the parts of the kings (two three voice choirs SSA and TBB). I dare you to listen to it just once. You'll play it over and over. Sometimes you must do that with Chanticleer because the arrangements are so rich you want to make sure that hear everything that there is to hear. Listening to Chanticleer sometimes requires a sophisticated enough ear to get through all the layers but everyone can enjoy it to the fullest. Some folks might say it's too high brow for them but I strongly urge you to give it a try. Sit your kids down and turn off the hip hop stuff for awhile. It's a music lesson in a bottle!

    4 out of 5 stars nice.......2004-06-22

These are a cappella renditions of songs from a variety of sources; Chanticleer's style gives almost all of them a distinctly medieval feel. Beautiful arrangements, but don't expect to understand all the lyrics, even when you speak the featured language. The faked accents (as on "Beautiful Star of Bethlehem," where I guess they were trying for Ozark mountain hillbilly and wound up with my home dialect) can be moderately annoying.

A whole disc of choral arrangements of folk tunes could be too much--except in this case, the choir is the excellent Cambridge Singers, and the well-chosen arrangements cover a variety of composers and styles. Among the arrangers are Rutter, Vaughan Williams, and Daryl Runswick; the repertoire includes a hauntingly gorgeous "She moved through the fair" and 23 other selections. --David Vernier

5 out of 5 stars Typical of Cambridge Singers--A good thing.......2005-06-14

This is very typical of John Rutter and the Cambridge Singers. Superbly performed, meaning not too forceful or too delicate. Diction and tone excellent. The folk song is not necessairly as entertaining or enjoyable as some of their other repertoire, nor is it as meaningful, but it still a powerful listening experience. The money for this recording will be well spent. The arrangements, well chosen, showcase beautiful, evocative choral singing. Vaughan Williams' arrangements are best, and he is well known for his arrangements of folk songs. Rutter's are good, but his harmonies are too often predictable or saccharine.

Best are: Dashing away with the smoothing iron (5), The Dark Eyed Sailor (10), The Girl I Left Behind Me (12), Just as the tide was flowing (13), O waly, waly (15)

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Lyrical Folk Melodies a la Rutter.......2000-09-28

This is a collection of Irish, Scottish, and English folk songs beautifully caressed by The Cambridge Singers under the masterful direction of John Rutter. He seems to possess an uncanny ability to create a uniquely lush and lyrical sound with a choir.

In listening to these songs, I find that they have the capacity to simultaneously evoke feelings of melancholy and joy, and, ultimately leave me to conclude that I have been visited by sheer beauty.

5 out of 5 stars The Lark touches my own heart!.......2000-04-27

In this review I am going to be exceptionally candid! This CD is a wonderfully arranged and performed set of traditional songs that will be treasured by any lover of this delicate yet vigorous music. I was a child of post war England in a poor suburb of South East England and our music teacher used to make us sing these songs which came from The National Song Book and from the folk song collectors, notably Vaughan Williams who put so much of this national flavor into his two collections, 'The English Hymnal' and 'Songs of Praise'. Before our generation the BBC had set up a radio programme called 'Listen with Mother' which we followed the established tradition of listening to them in those years of austerity (its funny you know, but we did not seem to get bored like they do today) on November evenings when the pea souper fogs swirled around the blue mercury lamps as the coal glowed orange in the grate. This music transported us to May mornings, harvesting, landscapes peopled with grenadiers, young love sick swains tip toeing in forbidden rooms at night etc. from these bleak afternoons and gave us the promise of the return of the season when we will be able to walk the Downs under blue skies once more. They also made us think that we were part of a continuum of being young, loving, having children and growing old and dying on this misty offshore island as hundred of generations had done before us. This self-consciousness of these characteristics that made us English and in their understated passion they revealed to us the promises of adulthood together with its victories, disillusionments and inevitable tragedies. Alas, the powers that dictate the conventional wisdom today have consigned these songs to the trash basket of history in the name of multiculturalism and globalism. The songs are not sung today as they appear too ethnocentric in a pluralistic society for our contemporary captains of society. This is a shame for those of us with no real English blood could still participate and enjoy these lovely songs that summon up the freshness of a spring morning or the pangs of a spurned lover in a few lines of beautifully stated verse. These are universal feelings that just happened to be in an English setting, which was where we were! The arrangements here are sublime, particularly 'She moved through the Fair' which always moves me to tears. The subject 'What are the English?' is a current topic for the UK is still settling down after Devolution and finding its own identity. They could do worse than playing 'The Lark in the Clear Air' to answer this question tout court. Please buy, but be warned: this stuff can be dangerously upsetting in its waves of nostalgia. It is like meeting a long lost (and forgotten) friend. That is an (almost lost) part of yourself.

Beautifully sung under Rutter's usual masterful directions. Dashing Away with the Smoothing Iron and the Dark Eyed Sailor were my favorites.
