It was a success in London but a bomb in New York in 1988, but Chess's cult reputation has only grown over the years--quite a feat for a dramatic musical about love and cold war politics at a chess tournament! While Tim Rice's lyrics aren't too shabby, Chess owes it all to the team of Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, a.k.a. the BB in Abba. Their score has the drama that makes for good musical theater, and it doesn't shy from canny pop hooks either. "One Night in Bangkok" was a hit in Europe, while Judy Kuhn particularly shines on the poignant "Nobody's Side." The title of this CD represents a tall order to fill. With a title like "The Definitive Collection" of one of the key progenitors of rock and roll, one expects a great deal. This CD delivers. The liner notes begin by stating that "Chuck Berry cooked up the basic recipe for rock n' roll." Berry was made a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, as one of the very first members--and justifiably so. As the notes continue, ". . .it was Berry who set the template for the songwriter-artist. . ."

Some of the major cuts:

"Maybellene" was recorded in 1955, one of his first major hits. Talk about class: Willie Dixon played bass. The thumping rhythm and driving rock beat makes this a quintessential Chuck Berry song. This song reached # 5 on the Pop Chart, making Berry a recognizable figure.

In 1956, "Roll Over Beethoven" Another great rocker: "Roll over Beethoven and tell Tchaikovsky the news." An infectious beat and driving singing.

"Up in the mornin' and off to School,
Teacher teachin' the golden rule."

So "School Day" goes, with the expectation of a lot more fun once the School Day is done.

"Rock and Roll Music" (1957) has the estimable Willie Dixon and Fred Below supporting Berry. Another rollicking early rock song that set the stage for what was to follow.

More greats from 1957--"Sweet Little Sixteen," a teaser of a song with a compelling pace; also from 1957, one of the greatest rock songs ever--"Johnnie B. Goode." "Go, Johnnie, go, go."

A number of these songs were covered by the "British invasion." British groups, such as the Rolling Stones and Beatles, covered such songs as: "Roll over Beethoven," "Little Queenie," "Come on," and so on.

This CD contains 30 of Chuck Berry's greatest hits, from "Maybellene" to "My Ding-a-Ling." If anyone is unfamiliar with Berry's oeuvre, this is a great place to start. For those who appreciate his role in rock and roll, this is a good addition, to pull together some of his best works. A good compilation. . . .

Chuck Berry is one of my old favorites. I danced to his music when I was a teenager. This CD contained many of my favorites from back in the day such as Johnnie B. Goode and Almost Grown. Also, some of his less known music was introduced. Havanna Moon was a surprising musical treat.

...you won't find a package to beat this one. An inexpensive selection of Berry's biggest numbers. Definitely not "definitive" by any stretch, but a great record to throw in for a quick shot of one of the most important figures in rock/rhythm & blues history. Recommended.

I saw Dennis Miller on "The Tonight Show" one time and he said, "what planet are Brando and the Beatles from and why can't we find it?" I feel the same way about Chuck Berry. I guess it would be hard to explain to a Christina Aguilera or Britney Spears fan, but if you are a fan of good ol' rootsy, r&b influenced rock n' roll, you know in your soul that Chuck Berry is the savant.

How can a guy come up with those riffs? Those simple, yet poetic lyrics? One of his rivals was the output of the Brill Building writers, but that was a group of enlightened kids (influenced by Berry, among others) feeding off of each others energy and ideas. Maybe the closest "rival" was Buddy Holly. Here is a poor guy from St. Louis who even pushed Presley, not to mention how he (along with Holly) inspired the Rolling Stones and the Beatles.

Bottom line: great sound, finally a great single disc overview of one of the greatest musical minds since 1950 and certainly one of the "Dead Sea Scrolls" if you are looking for the genesis of rock n'roll.

When Etta James starts to sing the world stands still and your heart skips a beat. What a voice this lady had. I am very thankful to have this music as it can transform an ordinary day into a fantastic mood of love and happiness. When she sings At Last or Sunday King of Love my heart smiles and her smooth blues make me sings too. She makes music way more than just sound. Thanks

For years I have said that even though Etta James did not have many "Top Ten" hits on the charts, she is the best interpreter of other singers' songs, the best who ever lived and sang on a New Orleans or a Chicago stage or bar stool. She takes every song she sings and makes it all new and all Etta. She is the single most important reason I became a fan of the blues _ _ _ years ago. You get the picture? I am an old lady and am an old fan.

She's been through many years of problems and heartache, but then, here she still is, with a voice that is even better (if that's possible!) than when she was a sweet young thing performing with Louie Armstrong, Ray Charles, BB King and all the great band leaders and blues singers. She even has a new thin physique!

A couple of the tunes are ones she had in her regular repertoire forty-five years ago and others are contemporary hits from other artists. Each one is "pure Etta." I seem to play this one over and over and over. I can't get enough. I even have it on my computer so I can listen to it when I am doing other work!

This CD is a great example of what the blue are and the influence it can have on all kinds of music. Some of the tunes one will hardly recognize at first. And--the best part of this recording is that you don't have to be in love to enjoy it! (though it wouldn't be bad that way, too)

This is Sonny Boy Williamson II, whose 1940s Mississippi Delta radio broadcasts for King Biscuit Time made him one of the most influential of all blues musicians. A master harmonica player, he created relaxed songs, often humorous, that reminded urban listeners of their country roots. These tracks are from his years at Chess, beginning in the mid-1950s until his death in 1965. His recording bands feature Muddy Waters, Otis Spann, and Robert Lockwood Jr., among others. Perhaps his best-known track here is "Don't Start Me to Talkin' (I'll Tell You Everything I Know)," but his signature sound is evident on every high trill he played. --Robert Gordon

He was probably born Aleck or Alex Ford, took the name "Rice" Miller later on, and adopted the name of another fine blues player, Sonny Boy Williamson still later. His harmonica playing is wondrous to listen to; he was a mentor to such luminaries as Howlin' Wolf, Junior Wells, Little Walter, and so on. This CD features work from 1955 to 1964.

A few selections well illustrate his art.

"Good evening Everybody" begins the CD with typical riveting harmonica work. The instrument wails. What a backing group: Otis Spann, Muddy Waters, Jimmy Rogers, Willie Dixon, and Fred Below. The song has an up tempo beat (as liner notes mention, the tempo slows over the 10 year period covered by this CD). He finishes the song by singing of being in a studio in Chicago playing the blues. And play the blues he does.

"Don't Start Me to Talkin'" is a nice tune, with more exquisite harmonica work.

"All My Love in Vain" should not be confused with the similarly named song by the legendary Robert Johnson. Again, terrific harmonica playing. And some good lines:

"Heart's been broken,
And all my love in vain."

The backing group (same as the previous two cuts) plays well.

One of his most well known songs, "Nine Below Zero" features good lines, such as:

"It was 9 below zero
And she put me down for another man.
I gave her all my love and all my money,
Everything."

His voice suggests a hard living life (and liner notes indicate that that was the truth)! The harmonica work embellishes the singing nicely.

All in all, a good introduction to the work of Sonny Boy Williamson. For blues' enthusiasts, this is a work well worth considering.

This is a wonderful collection of blues harmonica music. The Sonny Boy Williamson who was also known as Rice Miller was a masterful player, and a talented songwriter. His voice aged with him to produce that fine bluesy-gravelly sound that endears a blues performer to his audience.

Some of his classic songs like Don't Start Me To Talking, Your Funeral and My Trial, Fattening Frogs For Snakes, and Nine Below Zero are on this retrospective. This is a blues music collectors must have if you love harmonica music.

Chess is a musical that sounds like it shouldn't work but instead succeeds surprisingly well. This is the original concept album that was recorded before the musical was staged in London. Chess is the story of a love triangle told against the backdrop of an international chess tournament during the height of the cold war. The composers are Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus (the Bs in ABBA) and the lyrics are by Tim Rice, who supplied the words for Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita, as well as Disney's Aladdin (with Howard Ashman), The Lion King, and Beauty and the Beast. The six-member cast does a beautiful job with the songs, which are a combination of ballads, rock, and operatic choruses. Murray Head's version of "One Night in Bangkok" became a surprise hit in the mid-'80s and it still turns up on the turntables in dance clubs around the world. --Michael Simmons

And on that basis alone, you've got to cut it some slack. Fortunately, not all that much slack turns out to be necessary.

While "Chess" may be a document of an era that no longer exists, there's a lot more going on than the surface metaphor. It holds up very well indeed. When it aims for humor, it generally succeeds, and likewise when it aims to devastate. What more can you ask for?

`Chess' is a musical that should be counted among the best of what the 1980-is had produced: side by side with `Cats', `The Phantom of the Opera', `Les Miserables' or `Miss Saigon'. The score as heard on this concept album, written by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson (formerly of ABBA) and with the exceptional lyrics written by Tim Rice, stand proof to this. And yet, due to various reasons, like the changing of the director half way through London staging; a heavy rewrite for Broadway and a pan review from Frank Ritch (a.k.a. `The Butcher of Broadway'), `Chess' seems to be unjustly neglected.

This concept album is the main reason why the show has so many ardent fans until this day. Tim Rice wanted to write the show with the main plot revolving around chess for years and after his long time partner Andrew Lloyd Webber remained uninterested, he found the new collaborators in Ulvaeus and Andersson. The subject matter follows two international chess players in a championship, a Russian (Tommy Körberg) and an American (Murray Head) and a woman called Florence (Elaine Paige) who is a manager to the American but falls in love with the Russian. The story also draws a parallel between the game of chess and the cold war/real life situations.

This concept album was recorded in 1984, two years before the original London production took place. As the authors noted in the accompanying booklet, it was a work in progress and thusly the story is not quite readable here from the musical numbers alone. Despite that fact (which is amended by the synopsis included in the booklet), this album remains a winner. The score (played here by the London Symphonic Orchestra) itself makes an intriguing bland of the famous ABBA sound, the classical; the rock and the pop enhanced by the orchestral solo passages and the strong choral parts. The lush orchestrations add an epic touch to it and on the whole it is melodic and hummable, packed with great tunes. Some of the songs achieved huge success outside the musical: `I know him so well', a duet between Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson, held the number one spot on the UK singles charts for 4 weeks in February 1985 and won Ivor Novello Award as the Best Selling Single; Murray Head's `One night in Bangkok' became one of the biggest dance hits of its time, often heard today. Some other notable tunes include `The Anthem' (Russian's deliberation on his homeland); the soaring rock songs `Where I want to be' and `Pity the child' (in the former, the Russian reflects upon his life under the spotlight; in the latter, the American ponders about his own unhappy childhood) or the gentle `Heaven help my heart' (in which Florence weighs up her relationship with the Russian).

A special reference must be made to Tim Rice's excellent lyrics. With `Chess' he managed to keep up to the high standards he set himself in `Jesus Christ Superstar' and Evita'. Again in this case he shows he is a lyrical wizard, with his familiar cynical touch. `The story of chess', in which he gives a history of the game in a couple of crafty verses, is a pure masterpiece. The same can be said of the song `I know him so well', where the two women reexamine their relationship with the same man. As a whole, `Chess' owes a lot of its appeal to Tim Rice's written word.

The cast on this album ranks the high standard of the material. The principal parts (sung by Elaine Paige, Tommy Körberg and Murray Head) are delivered in a strong and impeccable fashion.

This 2-disc edition comes with a booklet containing a note from the authors, a text about chess, a full synopsis and a libretto, together with the photos of the principal singers.

Anyone interested in the modern musical theatre should find `Chess' to be a great score with great lyrics, which should be enough to satisfy any aficionado.

I love "Chess"! I still remember the first time I heard the single "One Night in Bangkok" on my car radio. I thought it was so unusual and so very cool, so I tracked down the album and bought it. Then I taped it onto a cassette, which is what I've been listening to for years, so I finally broke down and got it on CD. Of course, it's on my iPod now. I've seen the musical, and I loved that, too.

I love this show! That said, I do not care for this version of it. The inclusion of the word "concept" in the title means it is just that. This was, thankfully, not the final version of the show that would later spawn the hit song, "One Night In Bangkok".

With most Broadway musicals, the musical numbers tell the basic story of the show. If you listen to the recordings of Phantom, Mama Mia, Beauty and the Beast, you can discern the basic storyline of the show. Listening to this particular recording of Chess, though, will leave you wondering "What was that?" The Broadway arrival of Chess saw a much needed reworking of the storyline and arrangement of the musical numbers. This recording seems too much like a mish-mash of songs that don't really relate to each other.

For musical fanatics (like myself), I say "yes, you should have this recording in your collection", if only to understand how much work went into the show before it opened on Broadway.

If you are only buying the album because of "One Night In Bangkok", purchase the Broadway recording instead; you'll be much happier with the performance by Phillip Casnoff rather than Murray Head.

I liked this cd there are a few good songs. Everyone knows the classic At Last and there are a couple others that are similar to that sound. If you like a bluesy soulful sound you will like this cd.

now i prefer her earlier stuff, but a lot of that later stuff is pretty enjoyable to listen to. if you wanna get into what etta did, i would recommend this one. however, if it was me, i would go for either her early albums when she was starting out and was hungry (ROLL WITH HENRY). however, if you become an instant fan by her more recent stuff, then check this out and see why people see her as an icon (who should get more credit along with ruth brown and baby washington).

Few artists have ever had such an impact as Bo Diddley. He left his mark on all rock that followed. Bo's music really shows the evolution of blues into rock. He often gets tossed in oldies bins, but this stuff is timeless, and some of it has more bite than anything one would expect from the time; for example, the awesome "Pills" is one of rocks' first "drug songs" and one of the best rock songs ever written. So many of these songs have been covered by popular artists, and so many original compositions still owe a large debt to Bo Diddley's work. Diddley was a true pioneer, in fact, the originator of a beat so distinctive that musicians know it as the "Bo Diddley Beat." Bo Diddley is not just music for those wanting to learn about the roots of rock though, it is truly vital and irresistible. For those looking for a good place to start, this is essential Bo Diddley and essential music: PERIOD!

Arguably one of the most important Blues guitarist, to ever pick up a guitar....Muddy Waters has seen his profile have something of a re-evaluation, over the last few years, as bands with a heavy blues-influence (such as "The White Stripes", "The Black Keys" "Jon Spencer blues Explosion".....and even classic established bands like "Led Zeppelin" & "The Rolling Stones" ), have seen a rise...in the amount of people reacquainting or indeed seeking about the original sources of these artists that influenced such bands.

Trading in a wide style of blues (Electric Blues, Slide Guitar, R&B, Delta Blues & Blues Revival....it's safe to say that if it's Blues that your after, Muddy Waters was a necessary required listening. This 2 Disk Anthology is probably without doubt the best one-stop purchase for anyone (Casual or otherwise), curious with the guitarist's prolific work. There is simply so much worthwhile material here, that it's one of those collections that cherry picks through pretty much Muddy Waters entire career, and for an artist that started recording from the 40's - 80's, it's a collection that is breathtaking in scope, track selection, sequencing and even the actual mastering of the disk is superb. Sometimes you'll find with blues recordings, that because the actual quality of the original recordings were anything less than stellar, that the CD format, sometimes merely highlights the recordings technical shortcomings. Well...not in this instance, because the label seems to have taken the time and effort to put together a disk that impresses greatly with the sound quality. And coupled with some of the most popular Muddy waters recordings ("Mannish Boy", I Can't Be Statifised", "Rollin And Tumblin Pt 1", "Louisianan Blues", "(I'm Your) Hoochie Choochie Man", "Just to Be with You", "Got Me Mojo Working", "Can't Get No Grindin"). If it's a popular or highly regarded regarded Muddy Waters track, that there's a likely chance that it'll feature on this Anthology.

The only thing that could possibly make you not consider picking up this amazing anthology, is due to the higher price (due to it being a anthology) or that you're a very causal listener, that wouldn't want to have so much material to digest. If you are the latter, then you'd be wrong....you can never have enough Muddy Waters, and if there two things that will hit home, when you buy this release is (1) The man, sure can play the guitar...and (2) you'll be surprised, how truly amazing it is, listening to this anthology in chunks...as it quickly grabs hold of you, and refuses to let go. Such is the brilliance of this Anthology, that it'll possibly, urge you to seek out similar blues artists (Howlin Wolf, B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Albert King, Magic Sam...etc). And the highlight exactly why so many acts today, are looking back at artists such as these, for inspiration. Truly amazing!!!

The 50 songs included that date from 1947 to 1972 are first rate songs from Muddy's prime. They're not the only worthwile Muddy by a long stretch though: He did some good work prior to 1947, there were many more good songs in the 1947 to 1972 period, and he did some really good work after 1972 as well. To do a really thorough Muddy compilation, I think you'd need at least 4 discs but these 2 discs with 50 songs total do a great job of highlighting Muddy at his prime. The liner notes are excellent and are a great source of information also.
I had the chance of seeing Muddy live in concert as opening act for the Allman Brothers in the mid 1970's. Before seeing him, I knew some of his big hits and I knew he was a great influence on Allmans, Stones, Led Zeppelin and many top rock bands. After seeing him live, I became a much bigger fan as did many of the people who saw him in that period. Muddy deserves every bit of critical respect he enjoys today and these 2 discs are an excellent document of why.

Muddy Waters is one of the greatest blues singers of all time, if not the greatest. His classic 1950s tracks had a profound influence on music as we know it today, particularly rock and roll. If your music collection has no Muddy Waters, then there's a huge hole that needs to be filled. If you really want to get into this classic music, Muddy Waters' Anthology is a great place to start. I personally don't own it. I have the two Chess collections His Best: 1947-1955 and His Best: 1956-1964, both of which are excellent. However The Anthology would be a much better choice because it has nearly everything that's on those two CDs, plus many more songs that aren't on them. Particularly from the early years, there are many more songs here that aren't on 1947-1955. Anthology has 50 songs total, and the two His Best collections combined have 40, so you get ten more songs with Anthology. Those additional tracks may not exactly be classics, the most essential stuff is contained on the His Best collections, however any Muddy Waters music is worth hearing and the more, the better.

Muddy's early songs are mostly raw and stripped down. Muddy plays an awesome slide guitar which is all over the early stuff. There's very little harmonica and also no bass and very little percussion. The songs are significantly less melodic than the later stuff. It's simply electrified delta blues. Then the stuff later has a more prominent rhythm section and the songs tend to be more catchy and not quite as raw. Unfortunately, Muddy's slide guitar also disappears for the most part as Jimmy Rogers takes over guitar duties. However, the great Little Walter plays an excellent harmonica on many of the tracks which is always a welcome addition.

If you're looking for a first Muddy Waters purchase, here you go. This is a great place to start, but not a great place to stop. Once you get a taste of Muddy, chances are you'll want more. After the essentials, I would recommend picking up Hard Again (1977), At Newport (1960), Fathers and Sons (1969), and I'm Ready (1978).

If you don't want to get to get the 3 CD Chess box as a Muddy collection of Chess recorded numbers, get this one. The track selection is great, I'm especially glad to see 19 pre 1954 Muddy numbers which I especially like because of Muddy;s slide playing. The next few tracks have less prominent guitar, but arre somewhat more catchy and Muddy's voice got better , so I won't argue. You even get two live acoustic tracks -My home is in the Delta and Good morning little schoolgirls, as well as some latter day numbers, especially from number 17 on the second disc onward. Get it it's worth it.

This is a comprehensive two disc set of the man who defined Chicago blues. Muddy Waters started out in the Delta working as a guitar playing farm hand but moved to Chicago in the 40's, where he took his delta styled playing and plugged in to make a new music that was loud, raucous, and yet retained the subtleties of the Delta. His powerful voice and his slippery slide-guitar influenced the rock and roll generation of Jimi Hendrix and the Rolling Stones, who took both their name and their hit "Satisfaction" from Muddy.

Marion "Little Walter" Jacobs is perhaps the most influential harmonica player on contemporary blues, and his collection is a great place to start. He was trained by Muddy Waters, but brought a more swinging feel to blues. Muddy and his band accompany Little Walter on many hits, as do Robert "Jr." Lockwood, the Aces, and other Chicago greats. In the 1950s, Little Walter's popularity eclipsed even Waters', his style a little more relaxed and pop-oriented. Walter's versions of many songs are the standards: "Blues with a Feeling," "You're So Fine," "Juke." Great stuff. --Robert Gordon

Wonderful harmonica music! The liner notes mention that Marion "Little Walter" Jacobs was experimenting with different methods of getting the most out of his harmonica playing. He finally discovered an answer through the "use of a hand-held microphone which was plugged into its own amplifier. . . By `going electric,' Walter single-handedly transformed the harmonica. . . ."

Some nice cuts on this CD. One was a tune that he played when he was with Muddy Waters' band in Chicago in the very early 1950s, "Juke." This is an instrumental tune and well played, beginning with some very strong harmonica work by Little Walter. The band overall produces a nice blues sound. Fun to listen to!

By the time "Blues with a Felling" was recorded, Little Walter had left Waters' band and had a new one of his own, featuring the Myers Brothers and Fred Below. Once more, the harmonica work is great. Little Walter sings nicely, although his voice is not in the genre of Sonny Boy Williamson (II), Muddy Waters, or Howlin' Wolf. One nice line:

"I'm gonna find my baby
If it takes all night and day"

"My Babe" is a nice little rocking song. As before, good harmonica and good overall band playing. The recurring vocal riff: "My babe don't stand no cheating."

Another quick note. "Confessin' the Blues" was covered by the Rolling Stones.

In short, a nice album. His singing may not have been as rough and distinctive and powerful as other leading blues singers of the era, but he still sang well enough. And the harmonica work was outstanding.

There are no bad songs on this overview of the career of maybe the greatest blues harp player of all time. Chess' compilations, be they boxsets or single disc comps, are all, in my experience, very well remastered. Buy it if you want to hear straight up great blues in the Chess tradition.

Little Walter had an amazing harmonica sound and style that was all his own and could never be duplicated. Man, is this some hot stuff. His first record, "Juke", an instrumental is just, to quote another title of his, "off the wall." Yeah, there is a number that's called that which is on this CD. Absoultely what the blues is all about. Songs like "Sad Hours" and "Off the Wall" are practically Little Walter and the band sittin' around and jammin'. Check out the guitar lick at the beginning and the through the whole of "Sad Hours"; classic blues lick. Some other cool stuff is "Tell Me Mama", "Blues With A Feeling", "You're So Fine", "Mellow Down Easy", "My Babe", "Hate To See You Go", and especially "Boom, Boom Out Goes The Light." That one's a regular jam session, too. This is how music was made and appreciated to these guys. They just played as and what they felt. If you're learning about the blues, don't forget one of the supreme harmonica players of the genre: Little Walter.

For someone on a budget who is interested in the music of this legendary artist, look no further than this single disc album. The sound and track selection here are excellent. Anyone interested in the blues needs to have at least one Little Walter album in their collection and you can't go wrong here. Another option is Chess's "The Best Of Little Walter" which features only 12 tracks compared to the 20 presented here (personally I give a huge nod to this cd based on track slection, overall sound & price on zShops). But for those of you who have a few extra dollars around, I strongly suggest passing on both single disc releases and opt for the 2 disc set "Essential Little Walter" on the MCA/Chess label. "The Essential" boasts 46 tracks and is more comprehensive than either single disc release. It may be out-of-print, but well worth the find.

Chess owns the rights to the song, and it's a magnificent representation of Little Walter's powers as a blues musician. Other than that omission, it's perfect!

Tan Dun straddles the very different worlds of concert music and film scores, winning admirers in both. He's perhaps best known for his score to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which shares with Hero a visual poetry that transcends the sword-filled action film genre. In Crouching Tiger, Tan Dun's music was often striking. In Hero he often lapses into repetition and cliché, a failing compensated for by several appealing cues. The Overture, for example, begins with the mournful wail of ancient Chinese instruments set against pounding drums, a promising start that evokes ancient China and the struggles to come. There's a mournful soprano vocalise in "Gone With the Leaves," and the "Warriors" cue recalls Prokofiev's Alexander Nevsky. The plucking of the ancient Chinese lute in "In the Chess Court" evokes a timeless, peaceful mood, contrasting with the thrilling kodo drummers showcased in "Swift Sword." Itzhak Perlman gets cover billing for violin solos any competent studio fiddler could have handled. Tan Dun's admirers will want this, and audiophiles will love those kodo drummers. --Dan Davis

I received the Hero CD in mint condition and in a timely fashion. There's a plethora of things one could complain about, and when something works how it should, sometimes it gets overlooked. Not this time! I would just like to commend Amazon.Com on a job well done...

After seeing Hero, one of the (many) things that stuck with me was the evocative soundtrack. It set a perfect backdrop to the artistry and beauty of the story.

After purchasing the soundtrack, I was reminded of many of the scenes I enjoy, especially the tracks for the fight in the chess house ("In the Chess Court"), and in the yellow wood ("Gone with Leaves"). "Longing" is one of the most hauntingly serene pieces of film music I have heard.

This is not, obviously, a CD to listen to while you do step aerobics.
The theme is repeated and varied often, evoking the way the film's story is repeated from different perspectives, but those with short attention spans may perceive it as merely repetitive.

Beyond its association with the film, this soundtrack is an incredibly calming work of art. To be enjoyed with a good cup of hot tea.

Interesting way to present some Chinese history by convoluted storytelling. Jet Li provides a subtle, challenging performance. It's a visually stunning movie to look at, as well. In a way, it's a lot like some classic Westerns in that the gorgeously stark landscapes of China become just as much a "star" as the players.

One of the real draws is the music. Tan Dun's compositions are beautiful, sad and celebratory at the same time, and haunting. I think it was pure genius to pair his compositions with Perlman. I had to wait a few months for the DVD, but I went out and bought the music CD immediately after seeing this gem of a movie.

When I want to reconnect with my inner self and take a "time out" from my rat race life, I play either this CD or the sound track from "The Last Samurai". The theme from this CD stays in your head all day. If you like soundtracks, asian style muusic, classical music, and beauty, this CD has it all. I sometimes end up watching the movie again later in the week. I collect movie soundtracks and this is in my top ten.

Yeah, it is Father's Day and I'm not yet or ever the 1st born son but....I do like this blues just especially for today. I like Sugar Sweet on it best, piano is so pretty, this album has that and more. It's a test of time album. (Now a CD, or whatever we say now, tunes that fly in ether in our down load universes)
Trying to think of a good way to say hello to Father's Day 2007.

I had "Fathers And Sons" by Master Waters on a way olllllllld copied cassette but it kind of died a slow dissolving death ( this was from about my life circa 1970 and I wasn't in a cradle) Sad, yet in two seconds on my new MacBook which I dearly love I found it again. Yeah. Mine was actually not good sound compared to the remastered sound here. A gift from a friend in about 1971. He was an older neighborhood brother of a girlfriend a then techno super kid ....Way cool kid. Garage player, guitarist. (Liked my 'art') had a tape player and speakers the size of a car. In days when wires and speakers, turntables, amps, equalizers, and for some reason cement blocks and boards seemed mandatory in every guys space. Or milk crates. And we STILL HAVE THAT LOOK IN OUR GARAGE. WHY????????

Muddy Waters sings you through father's day....this album has lots of energy.
It really is a classic to get, or recall, or rehear, play. The one I miss hearing.
'You Feel So Good', it lifts the soul. Even a soul left, standing on Dad's Day, alone, staring, looking at ...another's Dad Day that is so fast, too fast, here already. Another day to spend with the personal truths and tracks of fathers or just hosting the bar. Or as we are doing ....we plan...to relax....not think too much.
For some of us(okay, me) it's a very complex day. So...the Blues.

It's ...maybe my favorite Waters and I just down-loaded it from my iStore.
I like how they call it "my" iStore. Sure. Yeah...it's mine. I'm maybe born to jive. But am I stupid? Yeah I guess that too. So now I own my iStore. Hey, why are all these other folk in my store all the time?

So, yeah, this is official, it is my favorite Muddy Waters. Why not, gotta pick one.
Do you know it? You'll hear a thread of it in a lot of music you might listen to-try 'I Live the Life I Love....sounds like..... You'll know it. Cold on a page looks a little harsh, sung you end up headshakin. It was all Muddy in music I loved a few father's day back.
But you Dad's will remember. ...well you old Dad's will. Ha.

Opens with The Daddy's Lament...'working hard all my life, now I'm getting pushed around' yeah the ole time daddy song...oh, All Aboard's really the name.... actually which is sweet. Really.
So let's haul in the blues and grab a way to say it hurts a little bad today..You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had, no you can't. No little girl can't loose something she ain't never had. What a great tune. Perfect on Daddy's day....you need to listen to the playing on this one. Maybe not your perfect. Pick yours.

"Don't Say I don't love you just cause I stayed out all night long....you know I'm a country boy." ..there is this clanging part beating in this I love. I actually sing this one. Full of exactly what I feel. Exactly. I'm ready, ready as anybody can be....Happy Father'sDay, country DSad. Let it all go, you can't fix what done broke anyhow.

Just the same this album has it all.

Just to celebrate I downloaded this, listened, toasted my daughter, hugged my son,waved at Jack who was looking for cover, saluted the moon, wept at a star, forgave a few j-birds and let myself feel the love of a Dad (who kinda darkened my childhood). And babe, that ain't so easy with all the buzzing in this head.

The greats such as Otis Spann, Paul Butterfield, and Buddy Miles, who join "papa" Muddy Waters on this album make for some blues in the best tradition. I love jammin' with it on my harmonica. This became my favorite Muddy Waters album after the first time I listened to it. I think you will too.

Back when Fathers and Sons was originally issued, I was in the ninth grade. As kids in those days seemed to have broader musical tastes than many kids do today, whether or not you owned and liked Fathers and Sons quickly became a measure of musical hipness. Unfortunately, it seems that many of the older kids who were musically hip were also getting in trouble all the time, so it was a little difficult to be a big blues fan and not be seen as at least a potential troublemaker. But looking back, its amazing that we were sharp enough to detect the quality in the play of those who have stood the test of time.
Paul Butterfield and Mike Bloomfield were both young white blues heroes of the time and they introduced many thousands of suburban white kids to the black "old masters" of the Chicago blues scene. Chief among these old masters were guys like Muddy Waters and Otis Spann, both of whom are featured on this album. The symbiosis that took place when guys like Butterfield and Bloomfield were on the front lines learning the blues became beneficial to both the old masters and the young turks. With the aid of guys like Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, white blues players gained both invaluable on-stage experience as well as the acceptance and grudging respect of black blues aficionados. What the old masters gained was access to the ears and to the purchasing power of millions of young white kids who would otherwise have remained largely ignorant of the blues scene.
Fathers and Sons is one of the fruits born of that symbiotic relationship. Though both Bloomfield and Butterfield died young, they are still looked at today as titans of the blues renaissance of the late 1960s. As for Muddy Waters and Otis Spann, what real blues fan is not hugely familiar with their work? Throw in old session stalwarts Donald Dunn, Sam Lay and Buddy Miles and you have the ingredients for a smash album.
I don't really have any favorites here, yet there is not a single song I dislike. For a measly ten bucks or so, the listener gets not only the original album, but also four songs not on the original. Those who hadn't heard the album yet will find on listening that they are probably familiar with a few of the cuts that have been covered by others.
In retrospect, Fathers and Sons stands as one of the great albums of the 1960s. If you like the blues, particularly of the Chicago strain, then you should own this.

Fathers and Sons is a classic. I first owned it on vinyl, then 7 track, then cassette now CD. This is a classic for any blues and Chicago blues lover! How can you beat Bloomfield, Waters, Spann, Bloomfield, Booker T and Buddy Miles all together? Slide it in, lay back and go for an awesome trip back to the 60's when this sort of jam drove thousands wild!
