Godspell [Cast Recording]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Jesus was a pretty popular guy in New York in 1971; as the ersatz star of both Godspell and Jesus Christ Superstar. If Superstar was a little dark, Godspell was positively frothy; and its portrayal of Jesus as a hippie clown was part of its goofy charm. Another part was Stephen Schwartz's nifty score; a little naive and dated, but also as hummable as anything in history. Slap this in the CD player and be transported back in time to an era when kids were all singing "We Beseech Thee," "Prepare Ye the Way of The Lord" and, of course, the cheery "Day by Day." I'm guessing they don't do these in folk mass anymore. --Michael Ruby --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

The genuine original.......2007-06-11
This is the genuine original, the only Godspell album that really ought to carry that distinction. It is not a sophisticated recording nor is the cast polished and experienced. Most of the cast is first and second year drama school students so voices are a touch thin and untrained. Listening with headphones reveals thumps often picked up from the piano microphone and other uncontrolled audio aspects. Instrumentation is basic with piano, Hammond M3 organ, acoustic, electric and bass guitar, drums and other percussion. It is not a problem however and adds to the charm and realism of the performance. As for where to peg it music wise I can't say it's Christian Rock, I find most Christian Rock is overly produced, slick and corporate and lacks soul and emotion. Godspell has a closer similarity to a good old Rock Opera with doses of folk mixed in. Lest one forget that we were freshly out of the 60's so it has many musical earmarks of that era. This recording of Godspell has vibrancy and energy that the later recordings of the musical seems to lack. Compare for example `All For The Best' on the 71' verses the London 93' version.
I am biased a bit; I grew up with this version. Not to mention have seen it performed at my childhood Presbyterian Church many times and I know the melodies, instrumentation and lyrics by heart.
It is dated- but good to remember.......2007-05-14
I listened with fondness in the 70's and part of the 80's untl cassette wore off.
I agree with the reviewer who said it sounds dated, it does.. and there is a lot of nostalgia in that, like remebering when in mass you could sing day-by-day.. its songs may not be as impressive as Superstar, but they are more ctachy and melodical.. All the willows there is a great song, not too sad or tragic...
It was only late in the 80's when I had the chance to see the movie, and I was not that impressed, though I admitt it was original.
Moving Music.......2007-03-09
Godspell takes a while to grow on you, but once it does you won't go away disappointed. The musical that made "Day By Day" famous is light, inspirational and a good way to make your day.
Got what I wanted.......2007-03-08
The item I ordered is the item I received. It's hard to go wrong with a particular CD that you want. Had I ordered the American Cast CD and received the London cast CD, then I would not have been happy. But I got what I wanted, so I am happy!
Excellent.......2007-01-04
The vocals and beautiful harmonies with the awesome band blew me away. I was very impressed. This CD was very helpful to me because my school is doing Godspell as a play and it helped me learn the songs and understand the meaning behing the songs. I got the CD before auditions, and I scored a lead! I sing "By My Side" which is one of my favorite songs on the CD.

Excellent.......2007-07-09
An awesome soundtrack just like I remember it from the 1970's. So nice too have it to enjoy again now on CD as opposed to my old LP which had become scratched and worn. Thanks :)
Capturing a moment.......2007-06-26
The thing I like about this version is that it captures the heart of the songs in a way that is less performance and more real emotions. I first heard this recording when I was a teenager (when it was first released) and the joy and energy of the songs were inspiring. I was listening to it today and it is still inspiring. If you are young, listen to it because it will energize you and inspire you. If you are older, listen to it because it will remind you of your dreams and visions and what you planned to do. There is still time to celebrate the life of Jesus. Live your life with arms wide open!
Godspell: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack .......2007-05-26
Hi, I am glad I got this album now I've been searching for this album for a long time. I used to have a copy of this LP, which I don't have anymore, but I'm happy to finally have a CD copy of it, which sounds good, just like the LP version. And it's the original Soundtrack, which is good too.
I would have returned it.......2007-03-09
I bought this CD looking for "We Beseech Thee" from the play. It wasn't on there. I would have returned it, but the invoice said I couldn't if it had been opened.
Lifts your spirits!.......2007-01-31
"All good gifts around us are from heaven above
So thank the Lord, oh thank the Lord for all His love!"
It's from 1973 but the lyrics and voices are still fresh.

A keeper!.......2005-09-05
I loved this as soon as i heard it. its a unique version of Godspell and thats what makes it great! Especially Leslies "Learn Your Lessons Well". it brings back memories of my show.....
But anyway, this is definetly a great buy!
Godspell.......2005-08-10
This soundtrack is great. I enjoy listening and singing along. if you enjoy Broadway hits then this is a keeper.
haven't listened to the whole album...........2005-07-22
I have listened to sound clips online, and I was telling my bro: "You have to listen to this! Aren't they great? etc, etc!" Shoshana is great at "Bless The Lord", Capathia sings a killer "Turn Back O Man" and Catherine sings probably the best version of "Day By Day" I have ever heard. (The rest were good, too, but I cant really remember them all.) Believe it or not, I'm working with Catherine at the Bass Hall in GODSPELL, ironically (im a kid's choir role, im way too young to be pro), but in this she plays Peggy. She's great anyway, though!
So, that's all I have to say.
my review.......2005-07-14
I have been in this show so i know the music i have a feel for everything. I own the 2001 Recording and i love that one. I listened to this recording and let me tell u some are good some are bad. There is simply one artist on here that clearly clarifies GODSPELL. That artist is Shoshana Bean. I think they casted her perfectly with Bless the Lord. She has such a Gospel R&B sounding voice. That is how the song was in the 70s and that is how it is here. she shines here. The artist who sings Turn Back o man is amazing as well. These 2 Ladies are very talented and going somewhere.
Listen to this and go see wicked for that is where the true magic happens SEE SHOSHANA OUT PERFORM IDINA.
Lots of energy!.......2005-02-02
Good recording of a great musical. My favorite would have to be Shoshana Bean singing "Bless the Lord." You might know her from Hairspray or as the new Elphaba in Wicked. But a great high energy cast.

Jesus Christ Superstar and Hair are often named as the two best "rock musicals," but Stephen Schwartz's Godspell--which opened off-Broadway in 1971 and on Broadway five years later--is, for many people, a sentimental favorite. The musical style involves consistently catchy pop and is inspirational without being preachy. Instead of presenting a linear narrative, the book is made up of a succession of vignettes illustrating biblical parables through a hippy prism--making it particularly easy to adapt and update. Directed by Schwartz's son Scott, this touring production (including new lyrics by Schwartz senior) is set in a hi-tech environment and incorporates references to video monitors and computers (which form an electronic crucifix). This revival is sometimes marred by weird arrangements (new orchestrations have been made by Alex Lacamoire)--as with the quasi drum & bass beat on "Tower of Babble" or the metallish guitar licks on "Save the People." Still, the performance presents an exuberantly youthful cast and is highly energetic. To hear an equally upbeat but less aggressive update of the show, you might want to check out the 2000 Off-Broadway cast recording. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!.......2006-09-22
I have been a Broadway fan for about 18 years now. I tend to like the more Contemporary Music better. After comparing different recordings of "Godspell" I can definately say that this is the best one!! I love it sooooo much! Every song is catchy and the ending really gets to me sometimes. LOVES IT!
BUY IT!!!!
great great great great great.......2006-05-18
Not a big fan of the original godspell, to be quite honest, but it had some good tunes. Phoenix productions did an outstanding job giving this show a few waves of wonderful. The music updates, as opposed as some may be to updating scores, are undeniably brilliant. Reading the concept on paper doesn't even touch what changes were made. Joe Carney rocks as Jesus, the ensemble is crisp and clear, and the band (which was all live, mind you - listen to the Vdrums) cranks out a mean funk. If you have any tangential interest in Godspell, pick this CD up, it'll move to the top of your musical theatre favorites. And bravo to Phoenix for taking the risk and putting it out there.
The reason to own this recording is:.......2006-02-17
I'm not gonna lie and say I'm really a fan of this recording...HOWEVER: This album is to Natalie Joy Johnson what the 1963 BEST FOOT FORWARD album is to Liza Minnelli. That's all I have to say.
Much better than I thought.......2005-02-06
I first want to apolgize for judging a book by its cover. This version is splended. Its not to the quality of the orginal, but does have its spirt. I still am not a big fan of the techno stuff, but when you get down to the basics its still Godspell. As I said, its no where near as good as the orginal, the Movie or the Londan cast. But it is way better than the 42street singers verison where I don't regonize the arrangements. The arrangements are different for this version, but at least these arrangements are good and I can tell its Godspell. I am a live long Godspell fan, I own many other versions including this one. I would buy it just because its new and fresh.
new and inviting music.......2004-06-30
This is a wonderful start for new people coming into the musical theatre scene. I am a friend of one of the persons on this cd and having him tell me stories of them on tour is a pure treat. along with listening to it is truly a great experience and a wonderufl way to get hooked on it.

Great compilation.......2002-05-10
I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.
A disappointment.......2001-12-15
There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

The Best GodSpell Ever!.......2007-05-12
I have listened to this particular GodSpell production soundtrack for years. I recently lost mine and had to find another. The cover is different, but the music/voices are the same and I was thrilled. This cast is amazing and the music speaks to every emotion. The ragtime paced "All for the best" is one of my favorites, along with "We Beseech Thee", with it's speedy, prayerful plea. "Turn Back Old Man", featuring a woman singing out with all the flavor of Mae West at her finest, is another enjoyable tune in this production. By contrast,"On the Willows" always brings a tear to my eye with it's mournful beauty. I listen to this soundtrack year round, but especially at Easter. It's light, fun and for some reason, it makes me feel good about life. I highly recommend this soundtrack with the 1993 London Studio cast. I have listened to another version and it absolutely does not have the strength and joy of this cast's rendition.
Most authentic Godspell recording........2006-01-09
Definitely a must-have for anyone mounting a production of Godspell; it includes all of the pertinent vocal music arranged mainly as received from the leasing company (MTI, in my case) -- most importantly, it contains "The Prologue" without any lyric changes as in subsequent editions. It doesn't take some of the wide diversions in the film soundtrack, and uses the twelve-voice cast as it was originally written. The few changes it does, in fact, make are easy to understand and work with. Godspell as it should be, simple and beautiful.
All Goods Gifts.......2005-01-20
I love this version. Almost as much as I love the movie and the 1971 version. The main reason I love this alubm, is because of Paul Manual's version of All Good Gifts, my favorite Godspell song. Its not like Lamar Alford's overpowering version on the 1971 alubm, or Merrial Jackson's pop sound. Both are great, but this alubm's version has the best harmonies and just the right touch of sweetness, gives All Good Gifts a great sound. This alubm is much more complete, having the Prolouge, which has the actors singing individual sections, then they all sing them again at the same time, there must of been seven voices going at the same time. Some songs are a tad weaker, like Day By Day and Bless the Lord, but the whole alubm sounded the way Godspell should be. I would recommend this one over the newer techno versions, if like them buy them, but this is for people who love the orginal Godspell and Godspell in general
The original, for heaven's sake!.......2004-10-16
No musical play has been so frequently revamped and reconstructed as Godspell. In a way, giving each new production of such a popular work as this a bit of a makeover is fair enough, but there is a really great little musical there to start with. If there wasn't, nobody would want to "do" it yet again in the first place!
This one is conducted by the composer - and uses his original arrangements. It is very well performed indeed. Perhaps there is just a little too much "reverence" for both the subject matter and the musical itself - but it is definitely the very reverse of "boring"!
If you are a real "Godspell freak" by all means collect other performances, and enjoy the different approaches that Schwartz's masterpiece has inspired - otherwise, asuming you want the real thing, this is the one to have.
My Favorite Godspell Recording!!!.......2001-12-01
I've performed in and directed Godspell. I've listened to every recording of it as well, and this is my favorite. While I do enjoy the two newest cast recordings, I think that this recording really captures the essence of Godspell. This cast used the original music and orchestrations while still freshening the vocal style. The songs are beautifully sung by a wonderful cast. Tower of Babble and the Prolouge are a nice addition as well, being sung as they were originally intended. All Good Gifts, By My Side and On the Willows are standouts as well. I agree that the new Godspell recordings offer something interesting and fresh, but if you love the classic Godspell, this is the recording for you.

Customer Reviews:
A Pig in a Poke.......2006-11-24
This was a very disappointing CD. I was excited to get a "recommended" CD coupled along with another I had purchased. Unfortunately this is a collection of poorly produced and poorly performed music by a local church choir. Whlie there is certainly good reason to produce and offer a CD to one's own congregation, this one should never have been marketed nationally. Save your money on this one.
May We Be Truly Thankful.......2005-11-05
"Come, Ye Thankful People, Come" is the experience of a church music service without actually going to church. There are very few CDs out there that are specifically dedicated to Thanksgiving, but this one is a good outing.
The Quincy Choral Society presents a program that might be performed in your local church on Thanksgiving Eve. It is a good mix of traditional hymns, carols and popular songs. The program suggests an autumn setting complete with rustic backdrops and a plentiful harvest.
The CD sums up the program with the following message: "We in America live in an extraordinary time of bounty. Never before in history have so many people had so much: nutritious food, ample clothing, spacious housing, good health. For all this we should be thankful every day. Let us consciously reject destructive influences in our society, and instead embrace a thankful attitude for the good fortune we enjoy in our country -- not just at Thanksgiving in November, but every day throughout the year."
When listening to this CD, my mind wanders back to my early childhood and memories of church concerts at Thanksgiving: memories of friends and family gathered around the supper table; memories of the wonderful smells and aromas from the kitchen as my mother prepared Thanksgiving dinner; thoughts of the coming Christmas season; my feeble attempts, in grade school, at making a paper turkey from a drawing of my hand (!); and of all the things we have to be thankful for.
The description indicates Ludwig Van Beethoven as the author. He did write the music for "Ode to Joy" which is included in this CD, but there are many composers and authors represented in this program, both classical and contemporary.
The performers include: The Quincy Choral Society, Johanna Nichols (flute), Marilyn Whipple (piano and organ), QCS Kids & Friends, Jeff Cruikshank (guitar and vocals), Laurie Macintosh (vocals), and AKA Pelican Groove (a capella vocals). The performances were recorded at various churches and schools in Quincy and Milton, MA.
Thanksgiving is certainly a time to reflect on the bounty and richness of life, and this CD will certainly bring out those memories. If you enjoy choral music, you will count your blessings and be thankful you purchased this CD of Thanksgiving hymns and carols. Highly recommended.
