This 1999 revival of Irving Berlin's timeless 1946 musical fantasy depicting the love affair between Wild West sharpshooting stars Annie Oakley and Frank Butler has been somewhat updated for modern times. Not only has Peter Stone made revisions to Herbert and Dorothy Fields's original book (the story is now a show within a show, namely Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show), but there have been revisions to Berlin's original score as well. Some of it relates directly to late-'90s political correctness--"I'm an Indian, Too" joins "Colonel Buffalo Bill" and "I'm a Bad Bad Man" among the exclusions. But the tunes that made the cut remain some of the greatest moments of American musical theater, which is especially ironic when one considers that Berlin had to be coaxed into writing the show after original composer Jerome Kern suddenly died. Many of these songs--"They Say It's Wonderful," "Doin' What Comes Natur'lly," "I Got the Sun in the Morning," "The Girl That I Marry," "Anything You Can Do"--have become standards on their own, and the revival thankfully retains the wonderful "An Old Fashioned Wedding," which Berlin wrote for the 1966 Lincoln Center revival of the show, with original Annie Ethel Merman reprising the role. Years after the fact, Merman remains a tough image to follow. But while she lacks Merman's brass and crassness, Bernadette Peters stands as the prettiest and sexiest Annie to date, even in the shadows of Mary Martin and Betty Hutton (the latter in the 1950 film version), not to mention probably the greatest singer of the bunch--her "You Can't Get a Man with a Gun" is an instant Broadway classic. They overdo "There's No Business Like Show Business" just a tad in this new version; it's seemingly reprised endlessly early in the CD. A companion to the fabulous PBS series, the 21-song, 77-minute The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" provides about as good a single-disc compilation as anyone could hope for. (There's also a five-CD version.) What sets it apart from so many other "best of Broadway" collections is its breadth--because it had access to a variety of record-label vaults it doesn't have to try to disguise gaps by using revivals or solo recordings. Here you get all the authentic stuff, including: Paul Robeson singing "Ol' Man River" from the first modern American musical, Show Boat; Ethel Merman singing "You're the Top"; the title song from Oklahoma!; Julie Andrews singing "I Could Have Danced All Night" from My Fair Lady; West Side Story's "America"; Betty Buckley singing "Memory" from Cats; Hairspray's "Good Morning Baltimore"; and "Defying Gravity" from Wicked, the newest show discussed in the PBS series. And it's hard to argue with the songwriters represented: Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Frank Loesser, Lerner and Loewe, Leonard Bernstein, Bock and Harnick, Kander and Ebb, Stephen Sondheim, and Andrew Lloyd Webber, among others. Obviously, no single-disc compilation could ever please everyone (did we really need two ALW songs?), but as a sampler intended for people who watched the series and want to hear more of the Great White Way, The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" can't be topped. --David Horiuchi

Some interesting choices, indeed.......2006-03-02

This is a pretty good compilation, but I have to wonder at some of the choices that went into it.
"Good Morning Baltimore" is almost the least impressive song from Hairspray. "You Can't Stop the Beat" was a much more anthemic song from that show.
I agree that it's too bad Les Mis didn't make it in. I would have traded that for anything Sondheim, although that's a personal preference :) .
Still, the opportunity to hear the original performers and orchestras perform these works, all in one place, is a great deal.

Great CD.......2005-11-01

This one plays in the car, on the ipod and in the house. When the kids were little they would ask if we could take them to "The Street". That is what they called Broadway (little did they know at that time how famous that street is). They still love it and we can not get enough of it. This CD covers the best and makes you want to go and see a live performance. You can not beat that.

Great selections, but bad transfers.......2005-07-27

This is a great taste of broadway. If you enjoyed the B'Way series at all, then you will probably enjoy this CD. My problem with it is that some of the songs sound like they were not remastered at all- the transfer to CD is terrible. The orchestrations in "You're the top" by Ethel Merman are muffled, and the song sounds like it was taken straight from an old record and slapped onto the CD without fixing it up. It doesn't sound very clear, which is a bit upsetting and annoying. Maybe this is just because that particular recording is older than some of the songs chosen to be on this CD. The more modern songs sound crisp and new and beautiful. "Swanee" is also very low quality as if it were just taken off of a record and put on the CD without any restoration. I just feel that these songs deserved better treatment and that we as customers deserve better treatment. Decca could have restored these songs and made them sound really good, but they decided just to slap them on the CD without touching them up.

I am surprised that nothing was chosen to be on this recording from Les Miserables since it had been on Broadway for 16 years and its tour is running until 2006. There were selections from Cats, Phantom of the Opera and Wicked, so I am not sure why nothing was chosen from Les Miserables.

Other than these few nit pickings, I think that this is a great introduction to musicals. It gives a little taste across the spectrum. Try getting the cast recordings of the songs that you really like on this collection. It's worth buying if you're a huge broadway fan.

Yes this is Some of the Best of Broadway!.......2005-04-08

This CD from Decca Broadway is a wonderful selection of some of

the "Greatest Hits" of the Broadway stage. Decca and Sony have

done an excellent job of remastering the various recordings, some

of which still show some of their age, but come across quite

well. Are there a lot of songs that I would have put on this

disc? Yes, but the ones on here are good choices. I may have to

get a copy of the Five disc set and the DVD's just to see if any

more of my favorites made it on the list. What this disc seems to

try to do is show the evolution of the Broadway song from it's

early days to the present. It succeeds quite well I think.

If you enjoy Broadway theater this CD is a must!

The music of Broadway comes alive.......2004-10-07

I loved listening to this CD. The music from Broadway's best loved musicals are on this album. I recogized most of these songs, even though I've only seen a few of them on the local stage. I have so many favorites on this CD. It is hard to pick one. I'm a big fan of Barbara Streisand. I loved her performance of People from Funny Girl. Memory is the hit song from the musical Cats. Betty Buckley's performance of this song is so emotional and sincere.

I loved the song Annie. It is a wonderfully optimistic song performed by the original Annie Andrea McArdle. Another highlight for me is the song One performed by the cast of a Chorus Line. Luck Be A Lady Tonight is another of my favorite broadway songs on this CD from Guys and Dolls. The music of the night is a beautiful song by Michael Crawford from Phantom of the Opera. Richard Kiley has such a strong and powerful voice. He sounds so inspirational singing The Impossible Dream from Man from La Mancha. My dream is to see some musicals on Broadway someday and listen to these songs performed live.

I'm surprised that there isn't any music from Miss Saigon or Jesus Christ Superstar included here. I think they are classic musicals with great songs Maybe they will appear on a future compilation from PBS.

This is definatly the best Annie Get Your Gun recording, especially since Ethel Merman isn't in this one. Such afun show!! A definate must buy!!

I did the Natl tour of this so it has a special place in my heart whether it sucks or not...I mean but lets all be honest here! "My defences are down" rocks!! and I wasnt in that part so that make this even better. I can pretend all day.

A premiere Broadway Musical.......2007-01-19

A show stopper in every sense of the word. Every Irving Berlin fan should own this one. Tom Wopat (of Dukes of Hazard fame)is surprising talented, and Bernadette Peters is suberb.

3.5, but Original is better........2006-08-09

The 1946 Original version is better for many reasons, but the main two are: it has a completer song list, and it isnt affected by Burnadette Peters. If you are a Peters fan, this is fine for you, but her voice just grinds on me and I can't stand it. Plus one of my favorite songs "I'm a Bad, Bad Man" isnt on this recording but is on the other. There are really no other differences between the show. Favorite Songs: "They Say It's Wonderful"

A good revival album.......2006-07-26

We did this show when I was in high school, but I didn't buy it until after we did the show. I just hadn't caught on that when doing a musical, buy the soundtrack and rehearse with it. Anyway back to the review, we practiced dancing with some of the numbers using this cd. So, I decided to buy it. Overall I like it very much. I'm not a huge Bernadette Peters fan, but I do like her. She didn't quite seem right for the part, but her singing makes up for it. Other than that the rest of the cast is great! The music is more updated which makes it more appealing to today's listeners. I just wished they would have released the new album with Reba McEntire doing the lead. She was playing when I was in New York, but of course it was completely sold out.

Great to Hear All those great Voices from the Past.......2007-07-05

I just wanted to confirm what the first reviewer had to say about this CD. To hear Ethyl Merman, Mary Martin, Andrea McCardle etc. singing their trademark songs brought a lot of memories from the mid-centry musical theater back again. The last song by Glynis Johns is especially poignant.
You certainly can't beat the price!

A Good One!.......2006-11-10

This is a very good CD, mostly because it's the original artists. I've had some that were re-recorded by no name artists that were ghastly. This one is a really good one--including the sound quality. If I had one wish, I would wish it were longer!

The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

With all due respect to Bernadette Peters's wonderful, Tony-winning portrayal in the 1999 revival of Annie Get Your Gun, the role of sharpshooting Annie Oakley belongs to Ethel Merman. Her bold, brassy performance of Irving Berlin's best score is legendary, as are the songs themselves, including "Doin' What Comes Natur'lly," "You Can't Get a Man with a Gun," "They Say It's Wonderful," "I Got the Sun in the Morning," "Anything You Can Do," and, of course, the classic industry anthem "There's No Business Like Show Business." This rerelease of the original 1946 cast recording includes four bonus tracks recorded in 1972: the overture, "Colonel Buffalo Bill" and "I'm a Bad, Bad Man" (both removed along with "I'm an Indian Too" for the politically correct 1999 revival), and "An Old-Fashioned Wedding," which was written for the 1966 revival. --David Horiuchi

This CD recaptures all the fun of the original Broadway show. The songs are as articulate, funny, and charming as they must have been in 1946. It is indeed amazing and wonderful how the technology can preserve and re-vitalize past artistic contributions for future generations to enjoy.

Shipping took forever.......2007-01-20

We paid extra for expedited shipping in the hopes that the package would arrive on Saturday before Christmas or at the latest, the Tuesday after Christmas. The package, in fact, did not arrive unitl after New Years and an email to the Seller went unanswered. We felt that we should be reimbursed for the amount that we paid to have the expedited shipping.

Fabulous recording.......2006-08-09

Annie Get Your Gun is a wonderful show, but there are two versions. This recording, and the Revival. I STRONGLY recommend this version. There aren't many differences between the two, but this recording has more songs which makes it a completer recording. I also am not a fan of Burnadette Peters`(which plays Annie in the revival) so I find this recording much more pleasing. The show has a nice mix of male and female ballads, and duets. Great recording for new listners and collectors alike. Favorite Songs: "They Say It's Wonderful" and "I'm a Bad, Bad Man"

It's OK for an album of Ethel Merman singing Berlin songs........2005-05-03

This is a fine album if you want to hear Ethel Merman singing Irving Berlin tunes. However, if you want to hear a performance of "Annie Get Your Gun" with some real acting, this isn't it. Ethel Merman's voice MAY be much better but my 17 year old daughter played the part with a lot more feeling in her school play. For instance, "Moonlight Lullaby' HELLO... it's supposed to be a lullaby not an aria. Another example, "Doing What Comes Naturally" is supposed to be when Annie Oakley was an uneducated hillbilly and the accent in this version just isn't there. Some of this may be a proud papa speaking but I just can't buy Ethel Merman as anything other than Ethel Merman.

A charming, bouncy, extravaganza!.......2004-05-08

Wonderful. Simply wonderful. Of course, having never heard any other recordings i cannot be said to be the definitive judge, but i can assure all prospective buyers that I have got a great deal of enjoyment out of this light larking piece, and would certainly reccomend it to any musical fan. In some ways it, like Cole Porter's Kiss Me Kate which dates from a similar period, is a breath of fresh air from the soaring romantic musicals of Rodgers and Hammerstein. Dont get me wrong, I adore R+H's work, but the music in many of their most popular shows, (South Pacific comes to mind, as does The King and I) is so powerful and overwhelmingly beautiful, that is is almost a relief to listen to this lighter, less serious piece, which to my mind echos back to an earlier era in Broadway history. The fun, catchy music, combined with the wonderful lyrics, help to make this piece the master piece it really is. Ethel Merman, who, i must admit is not my favorite Broadway performer, is superb; she was born to sing this part. Ray Middleton is slightly dissapointing, but nevertheless good. The overall feeling of the piece is especially well captured in such songs as: "You Can't Get A Man With A Gun", "There's No Business like Show Business", "Moonshine Lullaby", and "I got the Sun In The Morning". The bonus tracks are also delightful- "An Old Fashioned Wedding"is especially good. Overall this fun, sunshiny piece truly deserves all the fame it acquired and is a must for any serious musical fan.

Irving Berlin's Wild West Show-themed romp Annie Get Your Gun has long been a Broadway evergreen, including a wildly successful modern revival starring Bernadette Peters and Tom Wopat. But its original 1950 MGM film translation was fraught with production problems and recasting; Judy Garland was initially signed to star and even recorded her vocal numbers before being dismissed (due largely to her notorious personal problems) and replaced by Betty Hutton. While several of Garland's performances as Annie Oakley have been released on other compilations, this generous, 31-cut release not only marks the CD debut of the film's original soundtrack (originally just eight tracks), it compiles all of the various Garland versions (including the first release of a spectacular stereo Garland version of "There's No Business Like Show Business") onto its second half, essentially re-creating the "Annie that never was," in addition to the first complete release of the Hutton score. Also included is a superbly illustrated and well-annotated booklet that tells the complete story of the show's Broadway origins and rocky journey to Hollywood. --Jerry McCulley

This CD is well worth the money. If you loved the movie and want to relive the thrill and energy of the production while driving or around the house - get this CD you won't be sorry. I want to point out that some other reviews said Betty Hutton was not as good as Judy Garland. Not true. Betty's ability to sing in the accent she spoke in brought the character and performace to life. Judy's great but not great at everything.

I was very pleased with this CD because it not only had the original movie musical soundtrack, but also included the versoin with Judy Garland that was scrapped when she was replaced by Betty Hutton.

I bought this especially for the "missing " Garland soundtracks. And yes , anything Hutton sang, Judy sang better. It goes to prove that as a singer, Betty was a struggling artisan, croaking out the words badly at times. Whereas,when Judy the artist sings, you can feel every emotion and nuance that you would expect from a great artist.

Even though the movie version with Hutton isn't the greatest, it's still worthy of getting for your collection. Hutton's version adds a bit of zaniness to the character that neither Judy, or Ethel would want to attempt. With Garland the movie would have been entirely different, and knowing Judy's ability to rise to the occassion, it probably would have been better. After all,there is a reason why she has been known as the "world's greatest entertainer". Even in her outtakes that were supposed to be "so horrible", she seemed to have that performers ability to entertain. (I felt her outtakes were better than Hutton's finished performances.)

That being said, this soundtrack gives you an idea of what a Garland Annie could have been like. Its kind of fun to compare and contrast. Hutton did give her Annie a slapstick, comedic take that makes it fun to watch, and she did give it her all. Its amazing to hear the Garland naysayers, though. For one, Judy was always beautiful as an artist and as a person. Secondly, everyone has a favorite Judy Garland movie whether it be Oz, or Meet me in st louis, or Girl Crazy, or A Star is Born. Each of her characters were different and her co-stars and chemistry were different,yet each perfomance was done beautifully. I have to give the little lady the benefit of the doubt. I think Judy Garland would have been a terrific Annie Oakley.

I was a little nervous ordering this CD because I thought it would be poor quality based on the reviews. I was very pleasantly surprised and enjoy the music. The CD includes Both Betty Hutton and Judy Garland. ( I prefer Betty Hutton) and 2x Howard Keel. If you like the music from Annie get your gun, you will enjoy!

The only reason I'm giving this CD 5 stars is because of Betty Hutton....Judy Garland can sing and is an amazing actress, lets not overlook that, but she brought nothing to Annie Oakley. She didn't have an accent in any of the few outtakes they have of her, she shows no enthusiasum, and Betty Hutton just outmatches her beyond imagination. If you like the Judy Garland outtakes I'm holding nothing against you, I just don't think she did anything good for the role.

Peerless Merman In Her Best Role.......2006-01-04

The sound and superb cast are the ticket for this complete recording of Annie Get Your Gun. Ethel Merman, what can you say? She was a legend and this recording proves it again. Bruce Yarnell was incredible as Frank Butler, and Jerry Orbach, who at that point of his career was 2 years away from his star-making role in "Promises Promises" gives the Charlie Davenport role everything he had. If you have to pick a cd of the show, you can't beat this one.

The BEST of many recordings of ANNIE GET YOUR GUN.......2003-02-07

This album of the 20th anniversary revival from 1966 is, in fact, much better than the original Decca cast album. For starters it has better sound (and in stereo too!) and is more complete. It is also laid out in theatrical order so the listener can follow the show from Overture to Finale. Merman's voice comes across bright and brassy as ever..she we 58 at the time but certainly doesn't sound it.

To answer queries by two other reviewers:

1. The famous Merman version of "There's No Busines Like Show Business" was never heard in the show. As originally written the song was to be sung by the other characters to Annie to convince her to join the Wild West Show. After hearing the song in rehearsals, Merman wanted to sing it to, so an extra verse was added ("There's No Business Like Show Business if You tell me it's so...") and she was also given a short reprise later in the show. She did, however, do solo versions on radio and Tv and in 1954 starred in a movie called THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS and it is the soundtrack recording of that movie that yielded her famous recording of the song.

2. The song "Old Fashioned Wedding" was not in the original show nor the movie. Irving Berlin wrote it for this 1966 revival and it became another showstopper in a score filled with hits. Because of this new song added to the revival the minor characters of Tommy and Winnie (two young lovers in the wild west show) were downplayed and their two duets "I'll Share It All With You" and "Who Do You love I Hope" were both cut from the revival. Since this is the usual version sent out for community groups, those two songs are seldom heard anymore and "Old Fashioned Wedding is almost always included.

In 1966, Richard Rodgers, then the president and producing-director for Music Theater of Lincoln Center, decided to produce a revival of 1946's smash-hit Irving Berlin musical ANNIE GET YOUR GUN, which had established its star Ethel Merman as one of the greatest Broadway divas.

Rodgers persuaded Ethel Merman to reprise her role in the revival. Merman had not been on the Broadway stage since 1959's GYPSY and subsequent tour, and was eager to return to the role that she had immortalized. The revival also featured Bruce Yarnell as Frank Butler, Jerry Orbach as Charlie Davenport and Benay Venuta as Dolly Tate (the role she had played in the 1951 film version).

ANNIE GET YOUR GUN opened at the New York State Theatre on May 31, 1966 and played a stricly-limited run of 47 performances before heading out for a touring season. It later returned to the bigger Broadway Theatre for an additional 77 performances.

As always, Merman is a delight. She peels away the years as she sings showstopers like "I Got the Sun in the Morning", "I Got Lost in His Arms", and "Moonshine Lullaby". Bruce Yarnell sings a gorgeous "I'm a Bad, Bad Man" as well as a jaunty "My Defences are Down".

Of course, nothing will displace the original 1946 recording, but completists and Broadway fans will find a lot to love about this second cast album featuring Ethel Merman.

Highly-recommended.

A Real Showstopper!.......2002-09-22

I had been searching for some time for this recording of "An Old Fashioned Wedding" and I'm glad I finally found it - especially as it is an extended version (and previously unreleased)! All of the songs on this disc are superbly reproduced from the original recordings and are simply a joy to behold!

I find it surprising that enquiries from musical afficianados - and physical music sales outlets regarding "An Old Fashioned Wedding" resulted in either "Oh no, I'm afraid it's not on the soundtrack recording - you must have got the name of the song wrong!" or "You MUST mean the song 'The Girl That I Marry'".

What a pity, though, that the duet was not featured in the movie as it would have made a superb show which was already full of smashing songs and music, a real masterpiece! Both Ethel and Bruce produce a truly memorable version of Irving Berlin's new song for the 1966 20th-anniversary revival, which was written in his familiar contrapuntal style. Whoever said that this recording of the songs and music from the show is better than the original 1946 production was absolutely right. If you want the true feeling of "Annie Get Your Gun" then this is surely the recording to get. It's a real showstopper!!

This 1966 Revival Cast recording of Annie Get Your Gun is by far the most complete of all of the Annie albums I've heard. It features the original star of the show, Ethel Merman, reprising the role she originally created in 1946. Although she is nearly sixty years old, you definately cannot tell that here. She is wonderful and is supported by a dynamite cast. The following year, 1967, she went on to appear in a television production of Annie (Mary Martin had starred in the original television production of the show ten years earlier) and the production included most of the cast featured on this album. Unfortunately, any tapes of this TV production have been lost.

Each of the recordings of Annie is good in its own right. I haven't heard the original 1946 album. The 1957 Mary Martin television cast album is by far my favorite. The 1950 MGM film soundtrack is good because one can hear the version featuring Betty Hutton, who starred in the film, with the other half of the disc devoted to a nearly-complete soundtrack featuring Judy Garland, who was originally cast as Annie, but was unfortunately fired from the studio before the film was completed (she had already prerecorded her songs). Interestingly enough, Frank Morgan (who played Professor Marvel, among other roles, in the Wizard of Oz) was originally cast as Colonel Buffalo Bill. He, however, died during production and had to be recast. The 1999 Revival Cast album featuring Bernadette Peters is not my favorite, but it is good for what it has to offer; it's actually better than I first thought it was.
