Chicago (1996 Original Cast Recording) [Cast Recording]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
"Chicago's plot was cynical and satirical in 1975, but today feels like a documentary." So says Walter Bobbie, the director responsible for this revival of the Kander, Ebb, and Fosse "musical vaudeville," which began as a minimalist concert staging for New York City Center's Encore! series before moving on to Broadway, critical acclaim, and Tony Awards. Actually, it'd be hard to go wrong with any production, no matter how it's staged, because the Roaring '20s jazz-based music here is simply great. Some people actually prefer the original's Gwen Verdon and Chita Rivera as Roxie and Velma to Ann Reinking and Bebe Neuwirth, but no matter. Joel Grey is perfect as Amos Hart, James Naughton matches Jerry Orbach's original Billy Flynn, and again, the music here is wonderful. A near-flawless classic. --Bill Holdship --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

It's no coincidence that Michael Bublé's new album starts with just his voice and some fingersnaps on "The Best Is Yet to Come," a song made famous by Frank Sinatra. The Canadian smoothie looks longingly towards early-'60s Vegas, an impression quickly reinforced when a boisterous horn section makes its grand entrance, about 20 seconds into the track. That Bublé means business is confirmed by the second cut, a fast-paced take on Henry Mancini's "It Had Better Be Tonight," and of course by the CD's very title, another song identified with Sinatra as his cockiest. There are just a few sidesteps from the retro formula that's served Bublé so well so far: a languid duet with Brazilian star Ivan Lins on the bossa "Wonderful Tonight," a gospel choir on "That's Life." Interestingly, Bublé co-wrote the best of those sidesteps, "Everything," a Norah Jones-esque number that alluringly harks back to sunny '70s pop. It's also the only song on the album produced by Bob Rock (best known for his work with Metallica), sending out a strong signal that Bublé should reach out to unlikely collaborators more often. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description
Melding the contemporary and the classic in ways only he can, Michael Buble has created his most complete studio effort yet. Ranging from "I've Got The World On a String" to "Me and Mrs. Jones," in addition to two new songs co-written by Michael, Call Me Irresponsible makes this album irresistible.

Buble bubbles.......2007-07-16
This is one of the best releases in his growing catalogue of jazz/pop recordings. He's still proping himself up with his Sinatra wantabe interpretations; which is a shame because his voice is strong enough to develop his own material and style. This is a pleasant compilation of songs with a little "salsa" flavor. Easy on the ears and great for dancing.
Awesome CD.......2007-07-15
This CD was such a great purchase. I'd heard "Everything" on the radio but didn't know who sang it and was asking everyone I knew if they knew the song. Luckily, I heard it on the radio again a few days later and I'd ordered it before the song had finished as I loved it so much. Even though I bought the CD for just one song, the rest of it is so great also. "Lost" has such moving lyrics and such a beautiful tune and then there's some great big band numbers.
If you like this genre of music, you'll love this CD.
Michael Bublé does it again.......2007-07-09
Even my mother-in-law likes it! And, not going for the 14th selection makes it a very reasonable purchase/gift.
Great Gems.......2007-07-04
Buble's "Call Me Irresponsible" is a fine set with some real jewels. He obviously idolizes Frank Sinatra & shines on "That's Life" with a punchy arrangement, "I've been up & down & over & out & I know one thing, each time I find myself flat on my face I pick myself up & get back in the race." Of my very two favorites are the opener "The Best Is Yet to Come" with its cheerful anticipation, "Wait till the warm-ups are underway, wait till our lips have met, wait till you see that sunshine day, you ain't seen nothing yet!" "Me & Mrs. Jones" is a tale of an affair and was a startling Gamble & Huff soul track for Billy Paul. Buble milks the jazz out of the track, while sounding quite soulful. Harold Arlen is one of my favorite songwriters; so like other reviewers, I question the lisp on "I've Got the World on a String." It's probably supposed to be funny, but it sounds like he's making fun of the song. Joel Peskin's sax on the track blows deliciously. This set has some great gems. Enjoy!
A good album.........2007-07-03
I like it, I really do. I don't love it like I loved It's Time, but I like it. I know I'm being a bit redudant, but such is life. There were a few songs that in my opinion could've been produced or arranged a little better, but overall it's pretty good. I'm a great fan of Mr. Buble so he's one of the few artist that I'll buy a cd just because he's on it, and especially any cd that he puts out because it's sure to have good music on it. So once again I don't love, but I definitely like it..

From the perspective of 15 subsequent platinum albums and 20 top-10 hits, it's hard to imagine that Chicago began their career as a bona fide prog-fusion act, an early FM radio favorite whose jazz-tinged, album-length suites found them a hip cult following even as they confounded label execs. Ironically, when the pioneering horn band (a contemporary of Blood, Sweat & Tears and inspiration for one-hit wonders like Lighthouse, Ides of March, and Ten Wheel Drive) relented and allowed their music to be edited down to single length, their success was explosive. Most of the "single edits" on disc 1 of this 39-track anthology provide ample evidence of that de facto formula: a catchy riff ("25 or 6 to 4," "Saturday in the Park," "Color My World") develops into a hook-filled, pop-savvy production rife with the band's trademark horn perfection. One could argue that that sensibility--and a midcareer tilt toward producer David Foster, songwriter Diane Warren, and the MOR ballads that became some of their biggest successes--degenerated into formula. Indeed, there's much on the second disc to support that notion. This set spans it all, showcasing newly refocused edits of some their biggest early hits and lesser-known tracks like their lively '95 cross-cultural collaboration with the Gipsy Kings on a cover of Louis Prima's swing classic "Sing, Sing, Sing." --Jerry McCulley

God, I needed this!.......2007-03-28
I graduated high school in '76,so CHICAGO was a huge part of my musical formitive years.Have to admit I was somewhat of a musical snob-all about the musicianship, and CHICAGO fit the bill perfectly. So edgy, raw, and powerful.Even their ballads back then had such soul and substance.
This is the music that got me through the rough times, takes you away to a whole different place. When I saw this set on Amazon,I had to have it;and I've not been dissappointed. When I played disc 1,I got chills just like back in the day. Rhino's remastering kicks serious a--!Rich,clear and full sound.I know the few edits are kind of a pain, but hey-no biggie.Just sit back, crank up the headphones and FEEL the music. Now I know what you other hard-core fans are saying-"What about disc 2?" I've got a tip for you-when you listen to the second disc, just listen to it for what it is-not as a CHICAGO fan. It's really pretty good stuff.Besides, the 1st disc is worth the price of the whole set anyway. Those of you who are not too familiar with the group, here's what you'll get-superior musicianship, powerful horns, extraordinary guitar work(Kath),a very strong, much overlooked rythum section and wonderful vocal harmonies.A band with incredible range and versatility. What else can I say! Five stars-easy!
Chicago CD.......2007-03-22
We listen to this ALL the time... everyone who comes over comments on it. Great music. I bought it as a gift for my husband, who noticed that one of his favorites ("Colour My World"), is not included. Other than that, its a great 2-CD compilation of all their best tunes.
The very best!.......2007-01-09
This is a two-disc set containing just about every hit song I remember by Chicago. I have to say I enjoyed the first disc more than the second as it has the earlier songs. I have always enjoyed the brass in Chicago's sound and this album brings it on fantastically. If you want to hear the very best of Chicago, this is the album to buy!
BIG DEAL ANOTHER GREATEST HITS COLLECTION. THERE ARE OTHER CHICAGO ALTERATIVES..................2007-01-07
You could buy all the Chicago Rhino record remasters with fine linear notes, if one or a few of your favorites are missing. I like the remastering on this Chicago collection, I hate that Rhino edited a few songs. Yeah! I know no "Harry Truman" is missing, what a mistake that was. A nice Chicago collection if you just want the hits spanning their nearly fortyone year career. The beginning of the Chicago band was the best, actually the first nine years with Terry Kath and James William Guerico producing all of the Chicago recording output, up to Chicago XI, 1977, (output from 1969 to 1977). Ironically Chicago XI would be Terry Kaths last record with Chicago before his untimely death in January 1978. Wheather you like or hate the 1980s, 1990s material, this greatest hits collection, still speaks for Chicago as a band that has lasted since its conception in 1967. I like some of the 1980s material, despite Chicago being Peter Ceteras backup band at this time. I like 2006 release Chicago XXX, which I really thought had some of the old Chicago sound despite some ballads. Chicago still has four original members in the band as of 2007. I wish the bad blood with Peter Cetera and Danny Seraphine would clear and both would rejoin Chicago, fat chance at that happening. This is a nice Rhino remastered "Chicago Greatest Hits" Remaster with a few flaws, that I remedied by getting all the Chicago Rhino Remasters.
1/2 Good.......2006-11-20
I really enjoyed the first CD of this two CD set as it contained songs from the early years. However, the second CD contained newer songs with new band members from a time period I stopped enjoying Chicago's music. I would have much preferred two CDs filled with tunes from the early years. They certainly had enough songs in their repetoire to do so.

Muddy Waters had his second coming 30 years ago, when longtime friend and disciple Johnny Winter and his Blue Sky label returned him--after a series of listless recordings aimed at the rock audience--to the raw, powerful authenticity of his timeless Chess material with a series of powerful albums. Beginning with 1977's acclaimed Hard Again, a subsequent tour produced Muddy "Mississippi" Waters Live, recorded onstage in Detroit, New York, and Philadelphia with Muddy's band, Winter, and harmonica player/vocalist James Cotton. Enough live material remained for Legacy to release an expanded version with an entire second disc of unissued concert material. It seems even that wasn't the end. This collection returns again to those remarkable concerts, featuring Muddy on five tracks, among them a rousing "I Can't Be Satisfied," "Trouble No More," "Caldonia," and the closing "Got My Mojo Workin'." Winter and Cotton are no less powerful, Cotton redoing Jackie Brenston's hit "Rocket '88'" and Winter ripping up John Lee Hooker's "I Done Got Over It" and "Mama Talk to Your Daughter." --Rich Kienzle

RICK SHAQ GOLDSTEIN SAYS: ?WHAT DO YOU GET WHEN YOU MIX, MUDDY WATERS, COTTON & WINTER? ANSWER:" OLD-TIME COOKING BLUES!".......2007-07-14
This cd is a new release of a concert tour in 1977 with Muddy Waters, Johnny Winter and James Cotton. I vacillated for days before I bought this. I have deducted, that listening to the thirty second sound bites, are worthless, especially when making a decision on electric blues. In 30 seconds, the guy might not even be done tuning his guitar! I'm going to attempt, to help you, not to have to go through, the anguish, that I went through, before I made the decision to buy this cd. First of all, you can tell how much these three guys like each other. Since this is a live performance, you hear them kidding each other throughout each song. One guy sings: "Your mother ought to know..." And one of the guys not singing lead, is yelling: "Yea tell em!" or you hear enthusiastic screams like: "Ow!" "Yea" "Do it James!" "Do it Johnny", etc. I personally think James Cotton, and his mind blowing "harp" (For you non-experienced blues neophytes, that's his harmonica! Please make a note of that!) steals the whole show. That magic harp of his, is either screeching, scratching, waling, and always cooking. If I were to try to draw a verbal picture for you, of the type of blues these fella's are playing, I'd say, think about an old black and white detective movie, and you're inside a bar, smoke is slowly circling its way to the ceiling, and in the background you hear the blues. That's the kind of blues on this cd. James Cotton, when he's not blowing the "harp", showcases a voice, that sounds like its seen, a lot of cigarettes, a lot of whiskey, a lot of women, and left it with the blues. This entire cd, is old-time "roadhouse", feeling good, blues. There are 11 songs, totaling just under sixty minutes. This is a classic taste, of old-time jamming, ELECTRIC BLUES, with the "harp", being the pulse, that never misses a blue beat! Buy this!
As wonderful as you'd expect.......2007-06-14
They were only together for one album and tour, but the Hard Again band was the most kickass assemblage of blues talent there has ever been. They simply never played anything, either live or in studio, that was not of extraordinarily high quality. This disc absolutely smokes, and it's a welcome treat that Cotton and Winter each get a couple turns on lead vocals. It's very encouraging that there's still this much great stuff left over after after the two disc edition of Muddy "Mississippi" Waters, because that means there's likely more on the way.
Bringin' It Back.......2007-06-14
Muddy Waters' work on Chess Records from the late 1940s to the early 1970s is truly amazing. He was the most powerful blues artist and one of the best songwriters. Many fans think he was in decline in the mid-1970s when "Breakin' It Up, Breakin' It Down" was recorded. This concert document should dispel those thoughts. It might have taken Muddy longer to build up a head of steam, but when he got rollin', he was as "mannish" as ever. With old pal James Cotton blowing away on harp and Johnny Winter (who ignited Muddy's revival by producing his later records on Blue Sky Records) as his co-stars on the 1977 tour, Muddy was pushed to the heights he regularly reached in his 1950s and 1960s heyday ("Pinetop" Perkins on piano, and Bob Margolin on guitar also shine). The live version of "Can't be Satisfied" - the second cut on the disc - is as strong as any live recording in his career. I saw this band at Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. and the three stars were on fire and having a whale of a time. When I bought "Breakin' It Up, Breakin' It Down," I thought, "there is no way this recording will be as good as I remember the show." But not to worry, it's all here and hearing it again made me smile at the memories of Muddy, James, and Johnny pouring out electric blues. A rousing "Got My Mojo Working" (the encore) finishes things up nicely. Someone once said, "In Muddy Waters' hands 'the blues' is a misnomer."

The movie version of Kander and Ebb's Chicago was long in the making, but it's well worth the wait. Director Rob Marshall's main change was to turn the classic musical numbers into fantasy sequences, but of course this isn't obvious on CD. Most importantly, the arrangements are bursting with life while being true to the show's spirit, and the casting is simply inspired. Catherine Zeta-Jones actually started her career on the British boards (she was in The Pajama Game and 42nd Street), so her turn as slinky Velma Kelly isn't that surprising; Renée Zellweger as Roxie Hart is more of a leftfield choice, but she shows she can handle the singing demands with pizzazz. The real revelation may well be rapper Queen Latifah, who belts out "When You're Good to Mama" with a marvelous affinity for the material. OK, so the R&B reprise of "Cell Block Tango/He Had It Coming" by Queen Latifah, Macy Gray, and Lil' Kim fails to convince, while Anastacia's "Love Is a Crime" is just blah (rest easy, purists, it's over the end credits). On the other hand, the CD provides two bonuses: "Class," which was cut from the movie, and "I Move On," a great duet written by Kander and Ebb for the final cut. It's really easy to mess up film adaptations of Broadway shows. Happily, Chicago proves it can be done right. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
A pretty good movie based on a musical........2007-06-13
This is a really good movie musical! It seemed that, within the last ten years, movie musicals have started to suck. This one was actually quite good. I saw many celebrities that I never knew could sing, like Richard Gere. What I liked most about this show is that, instead of randomly bursting into song, the songs were performed separated from the events of the show; they served more like commentary. It reminded me, somewhat, of the movie of Cabaret, which restricted the songs to the stage and served as commentary. This is an excellent soundtrack, and the songs are very jazzy. Some of my personal favorites are "All That Jazz", "Cell Block Tango", "We Both Reached for the Gun", "Mr.Cellophane", and "Hot Honey Rag." I recommend this CD and its movie to all.
She loved it........2007-05-12
I got this for a very close friend last Christmas. She is completely and utterly fascinated by this movie, its woman empowerment, the dancing, and especially (I eventually agreed) the fantastic lyrical and musical composition.
It's in her stereo, her mp3, HER HEAD, all the time. She adores it.
I'm not much for musicals, but I admit, the few scenes she made me watch were pretty nifty...
Worth every penny and more.......2007-05-07
I love this soundtrack, I can listen to Cell Block Tango and When you're good to mama, over and over. I was going to DL it from Itunes, but that version is missing a few songs and cost a little more.
All that Jazz.......2007-03-29
mm hmm i love this movie i love this soundtrack...i sing to it all the time...it always gets me going when i go out!! If you like musicals with an upbeat tempo...buy this one! The movie is fun too!...but dont take my word for it!! :)
He Only Had Himself To Blame.......2007-03-26
I heard this soundtrack two years beafore I saw the movie. But when I first heard the soundtrack I was... I don't even know to what to say. It just hit me. It was so great, one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. And the voice of Catherine Zeta-Jones is just amazing and it carries both the songs and the movie all the way trough. From start to fhinishi. And it never stops.
If you like musicals or just want a good music esxperiensse you have to buy this cd.
Ida.

Amazon.com essential recording
During her far-too-brief career, cellist Jacqueline du Pré exhibited an almost oracular power of communication. Her performances bristled with the kind of brilliant electricity that could change lives and convert listeners to a lifelong love of music. Happily, it's possible to experience a sense of that power from the recordings du Pré completed before multiple sclerosis halted her career as a performer in the early 1970s. This set provides a splendid portrait--at bargain price--of du Pré's unmistakable personality: the astonishingly original yet convincing phrasing, raw energy, and ability to make her instrument sound uncannily like a human voice (du Pré was after all a favored student of Mstislav Rostropovich). Her rendition of Haydn's Concerto in C is clearly cast in a romantic--and nowadays perhaps unfashionable--mold, yet du Pré's big, bold tone carries the musical line forward with exhilarating presence. It's a demeanor that proves especially reassuring for the quirkily mercurial inventions of Boccherini. Yet du Pré most indelibly leaves her signature on the work that became her hallmark, Edward Elgar's E Minor Concerto, grafting a deeply personal level of expression onto the score's rich post-World War I melancholy. In the Schumann, du Pré makes an eloquently passionate protagonist. A similar sense of excitement is to be heard in Dvorák's Concerto--performed near the end of her career--above all in the flame of inspiration she evidently sparks from the orchestra in the serene close of its slow movement. This is a supremely rewarding collection for the beginner and aficionado alike. --Thomas May

Beutefully interpretted.......2007-04-04
Jacquline du Pres interprettation of some of the moast famous cello consertos is simply amasing. her music just flows with energy and abbowe all passion. she realy brings out the qaleties of the cello with intensety and softnes intertwined. music bursting with passion.
I THOUGHT I had heard these concertos,,,.......2007-04-04
UNTIL I was fortunate enough to have heard them performed by Jacqueline du Pre!!!
ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!!! Her superb playing, along with truly masterful
interpretative skills, just "comes pouring out of the speakers!"
Also, the orchestras were obviously truly inspired by these opportunities to perform and record with one of the greatest musicians of all time.
The sound quality is excellent, as is the separation and clarity of both the soloist's and orchestral performances. The overall dynanism is also top notch - I found I had to lower the volume substantially from my normal
system loudness levels.
I've enjoyed this set so much I'll probably wind up buying everything from Amazon that EMI has produced with Jacqueline du Pre's name on it!
Excellent Selection.......2007-02-27
The choice of concertos is excellent and the artistry of Jacqueline du Pre is exceptional. The Schumann and Saint-Saens works are truly beautiful.
The album is a fitting tribute to the tragic loss of an incredible young talent.
A sassy dame.......2007-02-20
I love this CD. It came extremely fast to NZ and a bonus too as I was expecting only one cd not three!
While Dvorak is currently my favourite, other composers featured here have been growing on me.
Never been a Cello devotee in the past, but I am enjoying this new phase of my musical listening.
The late Ms du Pre plays with vigor and assertiveness, yet manages to convey those moving and sublime moments when needed.
Most enjoyable. Thanky you
Pleasure to listen.......2006-02-23

Go ahead and call it a comeback. Despite her advancing years and frail health following a 2003 hospitalization, Old School shows that the Queen of Chicago Blues has no intentions of abdicating her throne just yet. Koko Taylor isn't terribly prolific--this is only her third album in 14 years--but she's also never released a lackluster effort, and this is no exception. As the title suggests, you should be prepared for tough, rugged Chicago blues sung by one of the masters of the genre, regardless of gender. Taylor's legendary booming voice does show some wear, but her husky pipes, wang-dang-doodle attitude, and sheer enthusiasm will convince any skeptics that the singer is far from phoning in her performance. The disc is split evenly between originals and covers of Willie Dixon, Magic Sam, and others, all powered by a gritty yet professional no-nonsense band featuring guitarists Steady Rollin' Bob Margolin and Criss Johnson, along with the harmonica great Billy Branch. Musically, there aren't many surprises, but at this stage Taylor isn't pushing boundaries with her meat-and-potatoes diet of grinding shuffles mixed with the occasional slow blues. Knocking off a tune or two from the hour-long program might have made this a more concise, compact statement, however. Yet with songs as frisky as "Bad Rooster"--possibly an answer to the classic "Little Red Rooster"--and a strutting version of Dixon's "Don't Go No Further," there's no doubt that Taylor remains as passionate and intense as when she was first claiming her crown, nearly four decades ago. --Hal Horowitz
Album Description
With her first album in seven years, the aptly titled
Old School, Taylor once again shows the world what she does so well. From foot-stomping barnburners to powerful slow blues, Koko proves in an instant that her blues are joyous and life-affirming, powerful and soul-stirring.
With
Old School, Taylor brings it all back home, supported by a band of veteran musicians and young revivalists. Singing like she did for Chess Records early in her career, Taylor belts out a set of material that could easily have topped the blues charts in the 1950s, and will certainly reach the top of the blues world today.
Koko Taylor, guitarist Criss Johnson and Alligator president Bruce Iglauer produced
Old School. Recorded in Chicago, the 12 songs (including five new Taylor originals and songs by Willie Dixon, Magic Sam, Lefty Dizz, and E.G. Kight) all hearken back to Taylor's early years in the Windy City. They range from the humorous truth of Piece Of Man to the rocking blues advice of Better Watch Your Step to the tough street scene of Bad Avenue (done in classic Muddy Waters style), to Koko's version of Memphis Minnie's Black Rat, a song she used to sing as a teenager. "I put my heart and soul into everything that I do," says Taylor. "I worked long and hard on Old School, and I want my fans to enjoy it as much as I do."

Koko's Still Got It!.......2007-07-10
Koko Taylor has weathered lots in her lengthy career, but she shows no signs of aging or rust on "Old School," her latest release.
Her voice still strong, still able to plead, prod, cajole and coerce, Ms. Taylor proves that no one will be pretending to ascend to her Queen of The blues throne anytime soon.
If you've always loved Koko, you'll find that nothing has changed. And that's a good thing.
YES, WE ARE IN THE BACK STREETS BUT WE ARE NOT CRYING.......2007-06-26
Koko Taylor was a lately acquired taste as I rambled through the Chicago blues milieu trying to figure out where the blues went after it left the Delta. By that I had became a devotee after Bessie Smith, Memphis Minnie and even Victoria Spivey. No question that Koko is now the reigning queen of that genre. Her big, big booming voice and forthright manner of telling her blues stories tells all as she does some remarkable covers of Willie Dixon tunes. And that is appropraite because if I recall Willie helped discover her for the old Chess Record label. But that is neither her nor there. For those who only know Koko from Wang Dang Doodle or Back Streets Crying then you are in for a treat.

GREAT SINGER RETURNS.......2007-06-11
Koko Taylor is one of those artists who just doesn't have a big enough catalog--we could use a LOT more music from her. She sings with passion, conviction, and a real love of music. This is real blues music too--not crossover in any direction, but true to its own great heritage. Highly recommended for all blues fans.
Traditional fare with some standout moments.......2007-05-24
The title of Koko Taylor's new CD, Old School, is a reaffirmation of the obvious. Taylor's formula hasn't wavered since she recorded Willie Dixon's "Wang Dang Doodle" in the early sixties. She makes no concession to modern musical styles, and she doesn't trouble herself with musical nuances like changes in dynamics: this is traditional, full-bore, overdriven Chicago Blues dressed in the same clothes it wore when it got off the Greyhound from Memphis.
So that begs the question: Given that unwavering consistency, why add yet another Taylor to the blues shelf?
The most compelling reason is the backup band. Although most of the arrangements here are typically too busy--it seems every musician has to be there on every beat--there are moments when Bob Margolin and Criss Johnson's guitars sting through the mix to remind us that there's yet some room left in the tradition-bound twelve-bar form for a bit of unique expression and exceptional fretwork. Most remarkable of all is the harmonica accompaniment of Billy Branch. Branch's full-throated harp on pieces like "Black Rat" is reminiscent of James Cotton's standout work with Muddy Waters, who was once Koko's male counterpart in the Chess rotation. Branch's work on "Money Is The Name of the Game," gives the tune a much-needed plaintive quality that Taylor's flat-out stridency (and tendency to lead the beat rather than lag it) fails to provide.
The benchmark of the album is the closer, Willie Dixon's, "Young Fashioned Ways." It's the only tune on the album where Taylor is backed by a band billed as "The Blues Machine." Sparse and muscular, The Blues Machine leaves space in the music where Taylor's energy has room to seep out. In this revived Dixon number, the 1950's Chess Records machine roars back to life.

Robert Cray says that Buddy Guy's guitar solos sound like laughter from space, but they can also peal like the cries of lost souls attempting to cross the River Styx. If these 47 songs on three CDs plus a DVD boasting a new 75-minute documentary and six performances from the Montreux Jazz Festival prove anything, it's that Guy is one of the most dynamic, diverse, expressionistic, and emotional guitarists--in any genre. The set neatly examines the 70-year-old Chicago blues legend's half-century career, starting with a ragged but soulful "The Way You Been Treating Me" cut in 1957 at a radio station in Guy's native Louisiana that finds him developing his searing, exploratory style. A year later, he's in Chicago working with tunesmith Willie Dixon, and the rest is history (chronicled in Anthony DeCurtis's excellent lines notes) that leads from the glory days of Chess Records to Guy's early breakout recordings for Vanguard to his modern-day mastery. The most recent recordings often find him working with acolytes: Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Keb' Mo', Jonny Lang, Bonnie Raitt, Keith Richards, and John Mayer (who duets with Guy on the unreleased "I'd Rather Be Blind, Crippled & Crazy"). B.B. King, who along with Guitar Slim was Guy's most important early influence, also joins Clapton and Guy on a stirring acoustic version of John Lee Hooker's "Crawlin' Kingsnake."
This set makes the argument for Guy's ever-continuing growth as a musician--not only as a player whose frenzy, improvisational instincts, and tonal control keep stretching with age, but as a stylist who was unafraid to put aside his trademark electric approach in 2003 to make the acoustic Blues Singer (represented here by "Bad Life Blues" and the Hooker tune) and to embrace primal North Mississippi juke joint music with Sweet Tea, which lends this set a pair of Junior Kimbrough covers. Guy's sole artistic weakness is his songwriting. He's never been prolific, and even in the '60s his lyrics drew on well-established clichés. But, as these performances attest, his playing's never been less than daring--and his voice knows every nuance of heartache and joy. --Ted Drozdowski

This was a gift to a friend who learned to play the guitar at age 60 and really loves blues music. He was thrilled with this CD.
The Blues legend plays on........2007-05-24
Buddy Guy is 70 years old and still plays like he is 20. This Box set is well wirth buying if you dig the blues. Buddy is one hell of a ax man that lives and breaths the blues. This is for the old and the new fans. I listen to Buddy and am always captivated by his playing. Buddy is Eric Claptons favorite player. Jam on America.

Kudos to Legacy!!.......2007-05-15
Now this is what I am talking about!! A quality product that makes everyone happy: both for newbies and long time Buddy fans like me. If you are a Buddy Guy aficionado like me, you probably have already 85% of this material. So the question is: is it worth it? YES!!! Not only because they have included some outsanding never before released outtakes, but mainly because there is a great DVD included that alone makes your money worth. Legacy really went the extra mile to make a great DVD and not just a throwaway like they did with the SRV box. Plus the booklet includes some great photos. Get it, this box is a winner!!
This Buddy Guy DVD is a Must!.......2007-04-16
This Boxed Set is an excellent overview of Buddy Guy's career. It is well presented and has a comprehensive song selection but the absolute highlight is the DVD. Like Albert King, early B.B. King and just about everyone else, material on these legends is scarce! The DVD contains eleven performances from different stages of Guy's career. The first two are from Montreux in 1974 with Junior Wells, Pinetop Perkins and Bill Wyman on Bass. This is a must because this set is not longer available in the States. Junior also plays his chromatic harp, in the style of Little Walter, on "Ten Years Ago" and they also do a slow version of Junior's "Hoodoo Man Blues" (a title, interestingly which came from a Louis Jordan tune). It is fantastic. Buddy plays through a solid state Japanese-made amp for the first time (they were the Montreux House Amps that year)and it has quite an unsual sound. It is similar to the one he had playing through the Leslie Speakers when his amp blew up while recording on Junior's original "Hoodoo Man" LP(1962). These two numbers remind me of seeing Buddy in NY in 1967 by himself (Jr and the Band didn't show up)he just carried on and played out the door of the Cafe Au GoGo with his long lead, just like in "Drownin' On Dry Land" in this set.
"Messin' with the Kid" and "Come On This House" are also gems from Montreux in 1978. On the first two tunes in 1974 they were essentially backing Muddy Waters (as they did in the 1950s) but here they are stars in their own right after the release of their early 1970s hit LP. It is great and features "Fast Fingers" Jimmy Dawkins on second Guitar (his only ever early video clip as far as I know! He is also featured on the recent Delmark release "Tail Dragger"). He plays a better solo on "Messin' With The Kid" than Buddy!
"Sweet Little Angel", a Robert Nighthawk hit and B.B. King tune recorded many times (B.B.'s most famous version: "Live At The Regal")has been done many times by Buddy too. This one is done at Montreux in 1992. I like his version on the "Real Deal" DVD with the SNL Band. This however, is also a strong version.
"Damn Right, I Got The Blues" is from Buddy's comeback period commencing in the early 1990s when there was a short Blues Revival period following the death of SRV. We are still at Montreux in 1998 and the band cooks for this performance. It is great.
"Drowning On Dry Land", "Tramp",and "Mustang Sally" are from Montreux again in 2002. It is important to note that these are NOT the performances issued last year with the Carlos Santana package. These are good, but in all honesty, the band on the Santana set is much better, for one thing the keyboardist from Otis Rush's band is magnificent. Buddy does the Buddy thing at the end and sings without a mike when it fails.
The final two performances are acoustic, something he has added to his shows since the middle 1990s. The performance of "What I'd Say", since Ray Charles has died, is particularly interesting. The solo acoustic "Louise McGhee" from 2004 closes the set.
The 75 minute documentary with this DVD is also a must to see. OK, most of it we have heard many times over the years on other releases, about going to Chicago (he remembers the day in September), and meeting Muddy Waters who fed him and so on. This is all well done and presented and you can watch this many times. The snippets of performances are what really shines here. "Red House" with Joe Satriani is cool and the clips of him (I think it's at Antones!!! In Dallas!) of "The Things I Used to Do" and others we wish they would release that whole set!!!!
Interesting final note: this DVD like so many Blues DVDs in the last 5 years or so (AFBF 3 Vols; Albert King in Sweden and more)was produced by Janie Hendrix and Experience Hendrix Productions. Janie Hendrix is not Jimi's daughter if you are interested. Jimi's father Al remarried and Janie was his stepdaughter from his second marriage.
BUDDY GUY DVD MUST HAVE FOR ALL FANS.......2007-04-16
After watching the complete dvd with all the performance footage, both myself and my wife were in awe and we have seen Buddy three times. One of the shows he came right to us on one of his audience walks, jamming right in our faces! He was totally amazing, smiling all the time. Anyhow, the dvd made us reminice of the shows. The early footage with Junior Wells is good quality and really does justice to all the perfomances. I think the reason it is a good production is the fact that it is produced by Experience Hendrix (Jimi Hendrix's Estate business) and Eddie Kramer is the engineer on the whole production. Buddy tells some great stories during the interview. The cd's give a good overview of Buddy's career with some nice previously unreleased tracks. I would pay just for the DVD, so the bonus is the cd's!!

Having morphed--some would argue devolved--into a predictable ballad machine by the '80s, it's good to be reminded of Chicago's original artistic ethos and vibrant promise. And what better place to start than their spectacular 1969 debut? This digitally remastered edition compiles the double album on a single disc that retains the original LP artwork and features a 16-page booklet with a retrospective essay (based on new band member interviews) by David Wild. Chicago weren't yet the '70s hit-singles factory they would shortly become, and CTA showcases a band whose muscular musicianship and creative restlessness fostered two LPs worth of music that was as aggressive and far-ranging as its singles were friendly and inviting. Tellingly, the hits showcased here--"Does Anybody Know What Time It Is?" "Beginnings," "Questions 67 and 68," and their rhythmically pumped cover of the Spencer Davis Group's "I'm a Man"--were often edited down from the original collection's suite-heavy structure. But those familiar cuts belie the downright progressive and angular nature of much of the rest, which fuses Terry Kath's neo-psychedelic guitar (which careens to noisy, feedback-laden Hendrixesque extremes on "Free Form Guitar") to one of rock's pioneering horn sections with enough experimentalism ("Poem 58") that it frequently overwhelms their undeniable genius with a pop song. Chicago would seldom sound so adventurous after this, one of rock's greatest debut albums. --Jerry McCulley

This is the first LP which started me buying this music. I have just upgraded my worn out record to a CD because this band still sounds good after over 30 years. Suggest those younger than 30 give it a try and hear how big band music really should sound.

It didnt take much convincing. My sister has the original LP and I used to play them constantly. Throught the years Ive bought this cassette several times and played them til they wore out. Now Im glad to have it on CD
When Chicago was electrifying...........2007-04-13
Chicago is a nasty city. The sports teams always lose, the weather is that of extremes (bitter cold, stifling, humid summers), and it tends to get ignored in favour of NYC and L.A.. But some great music came out of that city, and Chicago (the band) is an example. This is one of the greatest debuts in rock history, an album full of life, vigor, experimentation, intelligence, and rock and roll. Terry Kath especially shines on this album, with his blistering guitar work on Introduction, Poem 58 (his best song here), and Free Form Guitar. Most people who grew up listening to Chicago in the 1980's when they were making pop friendly, AOR music would absolutely freak at this song, and most of this album. There are pop tracks, like Does Anybody Know What Time It Is? and Beginnings, but they are adventurous, complex pop songs, and Lamm's piano solo on Time (usually edited on the single version) is beautiful. KAth's gravely voice is as amazing as his guitar work. Their cover of I'm a Man is better than Winwood's original, and Liberation is an amazing track in which to conclude. It's 14 1/2 minutes of jazz/rock fusion mayhem. Chicago was as good as any jazz/rock, prog rock band out there for the first 4 albums or so. Their pop songs, while not awful, certainly didn't have the adventure you have here.

Just what you would expect.......2007-05-19
I was looking for a CD of exclusively Bach music, not necessarily played by a famous artist or orchestra. This had a lot of his well-known pieces and was exactly what I was looking for.
Wonderful collection and price!.......2007-05-11
I found this to be a nice collection of favorites, especially to keep in the car and listen to. It is a variety of well known compilations. Although not encompassing, it is perfect as a review for driving, relaxing, and enjoyment. Plus, the price is right!
Like Floating On A Cloud.......2006-09-20
My first real appreciation of this sound was from watching the film "Slaughterhouse Five" in the theater, back in the '70s. That soundtrack was just a taste of what you get with this recording. My family pops this CD in the car stereo on long trips, and glide down the highway to some original smooth grooves. Helps the miles pass swiftly. Music for the soul.
Bach.......2006-08-27
Surely you don't need me to review the guy. You know who he is, you've heard his music, and I hope you own some. So let me turn the podium over to a cat named Picasso, and you can read into that whatever you wish. She's in a chair, near the CD player. She has entered the room specifically for the music. Her eyes are squinted, almost but not quite shut, little face concentrating on just how contented those sounds make her feel. Nobody can say why they move her so, any more than we can say why they move us so. If we knew the answer to that one, we'd copy the guy. But anyway, she loves the music, and don't you dare make a sound such as squeaking your computer chair. If you do, her golden orbs will open, fix upon your face, and shame you. Yes they will. But if you are quiet long enough, you can watch a little calico sleep, with the very same sweet kitten face that drew you to her five years ago. Bach is gooooood.
Good CD, especially for novices.......2005-10-12
I was looking for a recommended Bach CD - certain music by a certain orchestra - and stumbled on this. It is an excellent choice for a new library. I think when there was more than one movement to a piece, it would have made more sense to go ahead and keep the movements together instead of separating them, but a novice listener would not notice. A great way to become exposed to a great composer.

The Big Fig.......2007-07-16
This was my very first album, bought it when I was 11....This is a must have for any real collection!!! After the seventh album, in my opinon, the music starts to really get lax. It seems to me after Terry died, the band lost its power and seemed to become just another top 40 radio play. I was lucky enough to see the original line-up play at the Nassau County Colesium on Long Island back in '78....What a show. Don't hesitate to get this one. The mixing of music styles is truly unique. It is up there with such great albums as Tommy, Quadraphina, Dark Side of the Moon, and the White Album.
What Memories!.......2007-07-13
I saw Chicago perform at a FREE outdoor concert on the campus of American University in Washington,DC Back in 1972(I was a freshman at cross-town Howard University). They were absolutely FANTASTIC!!! I already had this album, but hearing them perform it live was just awesome. i couldn't believe they sounded like that outdoors!!! I just got the CD of this album today, and it was like being at that concert all over again. I know I'll be playing this over and over!!!
Eleven down, buy them all!.......2007-07-06
The only reason I waited so long to buy this CD was the fact that I have it in excellent condition on LP. Couldn't hold out forever though! Terry Kath and Danny Seraphine are two of the most underated musicians in rock history and their abilities are on great display on this great package. I would recommend the whole catalog they have out but at the very least, CTA through Chicago Eleven! Buy and enjoy this band that should have been put in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame years ago!!!!!
Favorite cuts on this album, Ballad for a Girl In Buchanan, 25 or 6 to 4,
Wake Up Sunshine.
Upgrade to old LP record.......2007-05-30
I have just upgraded my worn out record to a CD because this band still sounds good after over 30 years. Suggest those younger than 30 give it a try and hear how big band music really should sound.
ChicagoII review.......2007-05-24
