Chicago: The Musical (1998 London Cast) [Cast Recording]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Like 1997's Grammy-winning new Broadway cast recording, this disc benefits from CD length by featuring music and dialogue cut from 1975's original Broadway cast recording. Plus, time's been very kind to the Kander and Ebb musical, which was initially critically panned for its decadent cynicism...but that was before O.J. Simpson and, in the words of Chicago's Roxy Hart (played by the terrific Ruthie Henshall here), murder became an art. Ute Lemper can't touch Chita Rivera's wonderfully sex-drenched original Velma Kelly, but, then, neither did Bebe Neuwirth in 1997--and still, "All That Jazz" remains one of the greatest opening numbers in musical-theater history. Everything else here is as fine as, if not better than, the U.S. recordings, and all 23 tracks are just good old-fashioned Broadway gems. --Bill Holdship --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

"Chicago's plot was cynical and satirical in 1975, but today feels like a documentary." So says Walter Bobbie, the director responsible for this revival of the Kander, Ebb, and Fosse "musical vaudeville," which began as a minimalist concert staging for New York City Center's Encore! series before moving on to Broadway, critical acclaim, and Tony Awards. Actually, it'd be hard to go wrong with any production, no matter how it's staged, because the Roaring '20s jazz-based music here is simply great. Some people actually prefer the original's Gwen Verdon and Chita Rivera as Roxie and Velma to Ann Reinking and Bebe Neuwirth, but no matter. Joel Grey is perfect as Amos Hart, James Naughton matches Jerry Orbach's original Billy Flynn, and again, the music here is wonderful. A near-flawless classic. --Bill Holdship

Fun, Fun, Fun.......2007-07-07
Makes the enjoyment of the show continue after you leave the theater. Definitely see the show before you by the soundtrack.
CHICAGO ROCKS BROADWAY.......2007-05-17
Chicago - The Musical (1996 Broadway Revival Cast)
One of the top 10 best Broadway cast albums ever! A revival which surpasses the original. A must own for anyone who likes Broadway shows. Bebe Neuworth, Ann Reinking & James Naughton are stellar. Plenty of razzle dazzle and fun.
A near-perfect recording.......2006-02-25
Chicago is a classic, and that classic status remains in the revival recording. Bebe Neurwith is truly a delight as Velma Kelly, and shines in the star number of "All That Jazz", but it's the men who steal the show. James Naughten and Joel Grey are perfect as Billy Flynn and Amos Hart. Every single one their numbers is absolutely perfect are true classics. There are, however, two downsides. First is that the film soundtrack exceeds vocally with Catherine Zeta-Jones as a belting Velma. Second, and ultimately, Anne Reinking's rendition of "Roxie" is downright awful. I love her versions of "Funney Honey" and "Me and My Baby", but "Roxie" is disgusting. In all, however, a wonderful, fun, and classic recording.
Don't be so harsh on Ann.......2006-01-06
I understand that many of you who have bought this CD will be Broadway lovers (and I am one myself)and you will be used to the lead roles having amazing powerful voices. But just as important as good singing is good acting. I think that Ann interpreted Roxie as a wannabe who had the enthusiasm but lacked the talent, which makes her raspy tones and sing-speak completely plausible. It also supports the theme that you can use other things than talent to get yourself to the top This may not be the way you like Roxie played, but you shouldn't shun Ann's interpretation. It's a good thing if there is more than one way of having a character played, I think so anyway.
Personally I love the Miramax film, but I enjoy comparing these 2 and seeing the differences.
Good, But Not Great. .......2005-08-27
The revival edition of CHICAGO could be a whole lot better (like the original or the movie soundtrack.) But it is good none the less.
Bebe Nuewirth is fun to listen to on the recording, but Ann Reinking is HORRIBLE! She can't sing and she can't act as well as Ms. Nuewirth.
I recomend this recording to all Chicago and Kander and Ebb fans.

Customer Reviews:
The Best CHICAGO version There is!! Great Fun to listen To!!.......2005-12-09
There are lots of CHICAGO records. But the original has to be the best. Gwen Verdon is loads of fun to listen to on this cd. Especially in the songs "Funny Hunny" and "Roxie". And nobody can sing "All That Jazz" as good as Chita Rivera does. Chita is also good in the songs "I Can't Do It Alone" and "When Velma Takes The Stand" and "Class".
I recomend this cd to any CHICAGO fans and anyone who loves Broadway Cast Recordings!
Poor.......2005-08-12
With all of the productions of Chicago that have been and gone in this world, there are few that could be as forgettable as this recording.
With a seemingly excellent cast upon first view, I expected so much more from this early recording. Rivera's powerful yet run-of-the-mill performance is one of very few good things here, after all, anything could out-shine Verdon's elderly performance in which every note she manages to warble sounds like it'll be her last. Some say her performance was meant to be "over-the-hill", however, to me, it sounds like she passed the hill many miles back.
Chicago has never, to me, been a show of much calibre but this recording is probably one of the very worst in existence. Upon first listening you might think... "Oh, `tis not that bad, I don't know what he's talking about", but, when played alongside more recent recordings you will see what I mean. This recording is great if you're a fan of Chita Rivera as you can tell she is trying hard, and, although I think she doesn't suit this role entirely, does a creditable job. Verdon on the other hand... a big mistake.
The basic foundations of the what I think of this recording being laid out, I must say that I did enjoy Orbach's performance as Billy Flynn. He seems to master the role with confidence and his clear voice is perfect for "All I Care About".
Look elsewhere if you're a newcomer to the show but buy if you like Chita Rivera!
Before Its Time!.......2005-07-24
Living in the shadows of that season's deserved blockbuster, "A Chorus Line", "Chicago" lived in relative obscurity.
Despite its fantastic leads, Chita Rivera, Gwen Verdon and Jerry Orbach, "Chicago" was probably ahead of its time. Fortunately, the excellent 1996 Revival exposed the masses to this Kander/Ebb masterpiece!

American Black Humor At Its Theatrical Best.......2005-03-29
Ah, Chicago, why did the Tony awards go to A Chorus Line instead? As the old saying goes, "You was robbed!" No doubt the general public took more easily to the other musical's lighter tone and more acceptable storyline about struggling musical performers. But Chicago was the better show, in terms of songs, dancing and talented leads. It's just that the humor was so dark . . . and wonderful. Adapted from an old story by the writing team of John Kander and Fred Ebbs, and placed in the capable hands of the great Bob Fosse, this musical took a turn to the dark side when its director/choreographer nearly died of a heart attack partway through its composition. When Fosse recovered, he altered its tone and changed it into one of the finest pieces of theatrical black comedy, right up there with Sweeney Todd. In Chicago, the American legal system is reduced to who screws who, to a showcase where there are stars du jour, each fading as quickly as she enters the limelight of public sympathy. As the great Jerry Orbach says at the start of Razzle Dazzle, "It's all show biz, kid." From start to finish, this musical takes the audience on a tour of the Roaring 20's legal system, which bears an uncomfortable resemblance to our present-day one. But it's all served up with such style, such panache, that it's a real treat. Chita Rivera sizzles as the sultry Velma; Gwen Verdon is both tough and pitiful as Roxie, the hapless client of sleazy lawyer Billy Flynn. Flynn, of course, is the real villain or anti-hero of this show, the cynical cad who charms and manipulates the media to win acquittal for his guilty-as-sin clients. This role fell to the late great Jerry Orbach, who sank his big white teeth into the role and made it indelibly his own. (Along with El Gallo from The Fantasticks) The rest of the cast is excellent, too, from Christopher Chadman as Fred Casely to Cheryl Clark as Liz; everyone's great in his role and pulls the story along. The courtroom scene is our favorite part, especially when Orbach sings in a high-pitched voice for Verdon, who's perched on his knee like a ventriloquist's dummy, moving her mouth to his words as he sings We Both Reached For The Gun. Razzle Dazzle and All That Jazz are also standouts, but no song in this musical seems out of place; all fit in and are superbly done by this original cast. The CD is well-produced and sure to please. We highly recommend it for fans of black humor in American theater---enjoy!
The start of something very special.........2004-08-08
The original cast recording of Chicago is very good. This is what started it all. Sometimes overloooked, but the Original Cast Recording for Chicago is something that shouldn't be missed.
Gwen Verdon and Chita Rivera are the two leading ladies. Both are very good. No one can top Chita! She was absolutely amazing as Velma, and I wish we could've heard the complete score with Chita. Chita gives a soulful and sassy "All That Jazz", makes "The Cell Block Tango" shine with her monolouge, and gives a great "I Can't Do It Alone", and "When Velma Takes the Stand". Gwen Verdon is also quite good as the first Roxie ever. If it wasn't for Gwen there would be NO Chicago, because it was her idea to have a musical made about Roxie Hart. Her husband at the time the legend Bob Fosse wrote the amazing book for the show, directed the show, and lended his amazing choreography for the musical. Gwen doe's a fine job with "Funny Honey", "Roxie", and gives a beautiful ballad version of "Me and My Baby".
Jerry Orbach and the supporting cast also do a fine job. Jerry gives a good "All I Care About", and "We Both Reached for the Gun".
So, this cast recording shouldn't be missed, Chita will amaze you, and you won't be left dissapointed. Get some orginal Chicago!

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Amazon.com
This is by far the best and most comprehensive introduction to recorded blues ever assembled, drawing styles, record labels, and eras together with the efficiency of a spider's web. These five discs--tied to the hit-and-miss PBS film series Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues--embrace field hollers, early queens Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith, the music's first composer W.C. Handy, Delta slide guitarists, string bands, piano barrelhousers, jazz geniuses Count Basie and Lionel Hampton, Texas hotshots, lyric poets Percy Mayfield and Willie Dixon, Chicago powerhouses from Muddy Waters to Buddy Guy, Howlin' Wolf and howling white boys, soulkittens Etta James and Janis Joplin, juke joint brawlers like Hound Dog Taylor, African torchbearer Ali Farka Toure, modern guitar heroes Stevie Ray Vaughan and Luther Allison, and even recent hit-makers Peggy Scott-Adams and Susan Tedeschi. And that's just a smidgen of the talents represented across more than 100 cuts. Nonetheless, there are grave omissions in disc five, which focuses on contemporary blues. The raw electric sound of present-day Mississippi, embodied by R.L. Burnside and other artists on the Fat Possum label, has done much to open the ears of college-age audiences and should be included. Also absent are the music's most important contemporary innovators: Afro-blues fusionist Corey Harris, psychedelic folk bluesman Otis Taylor and rap-blues proselytizer Chris Thomas King. Still, it's obvious this collection is a work of devotion and intelligence as well as commerce. --Ted Drozdowski

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Synopsis of the Blues.......2007-03-18
This collection is an excellent synopsis of the Blues from its earliest roots on the rercording medium to modern times. It also shows how far and wide this genre covers in the musical landscape with its influence on rock-and-roll and jazz. Besides having over 115 songs, there is also a companion booklet that documents every track. I really recommend this collection to anyone not familiar with the Blues, because it can be a great starting point for you to expand on an area you find more interesting, like the Kansas City blues in the 30s, Chicago blues in the 50s, or diverse individuals such as Lead Belly, T-Bone Walker, Howlin' Wolf, John Jee Hooker, and Stevie Ray Vaughn.
Best blues compilation.......2006-07-13
IMO, this 5-disc set is par none the best blues compilation spanning over 50 years. Not everything noteworthy has been included, but it is the best bang for your buck you're going to find anywhere for a wide blues selection from early to recent, and Marty Scorese did a fantastic job in selection. I have given it as a gift several times and it is the gift that keeps on giving. Some very great tunes.
Raw.......2006-06-19
This box set compliments the film series very well. Musically, the set is wonderful until the middle half of the fourth disc and wans quite considerably on the fifth disc. This is not only a matter of bad taste in choosing appropriate music for these parts of the set, it is merely a matter of musical history: the blues at the time in which these portions of the set cover was simple not very good music.
These portions would have been much better off if they included work by the likes of Carey Bell or RL Burnside instead of The Fabulous Thunderbirds and the Cock Rocker of Blues, Stevie Ray Vaughn.
The Best Compilation on Blues Ever Made.......2006-06-03
One day in early 1968 I bought the album Wheels of Fire by Cream. Cream of course featured Eric Clapton.
I put on the live disc and listened to a song called "Crossroads" and became hooked.
At that time I didnt have a clue who Robert Johnson was or what blues was.
I over the years listened to blues through "White" artists like Eric Clapton, The Allman Bros and others.
One day I broke down and bought a Robert Johnson album and a whole new world was opened up to me.
I had no idea what "Mississippi Delta" blues was compared to "Chicago Blues" etc. For years I have listened to these recordings and was never able to hear the originals.
People like Eric Clapton have changed the arrangements on many of these songs to suit their styles. Now through this recording I am finally able to hear what the song was originally like. I personally love the slide guitar of the Mississippi Delta. I love the "rawness" of those recordings. I am also able to hear the electric side that came from Chicago as blues players migrated there. This Cd has the finest songs by the best blues artists ever.
This set includes Mississippi Fred McDowell, Robert Johnson, Skip James, BB King, Buddy Guy, Maceo Merriweather, Big Bill Broonzy, Muddy Waters, Son House and the list just goes on and on.
It also includes the "White" side of the blues including Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaugh, Bonnie Raitt and many others.
This is a celebration of the blues, and is a must for any collector, or fan of the blues. This CD is for people like me who have listened to the blues for so many years and now want to listen to the real thing.
You will never find a better collection in your lifetime....
The best collection of blues I've ever heard. Period........2005-09-05
So much to love here--from fife and drum bands to rare acoustic blues recordings, to citified modern-day blues artists. These discs teach you a lot, but never come across as preachy or academic. When you hear Percy Mayfield or Guitar Slim you just want to turn the volume way up.

Customer Reviews:
You'll be disappointed.......2006-09-02
Not the original artists. Very weak versions of beloved songs by marginal to downright bad vocalists.
Pretty good musical mix.......2006-03-10
Lots of great and clear vocals. I was looking for a musical mix and this has a nice sampling of many major songs but also some more recent stuff. I haven't purchased an import before but I would do it again if the opportunity presented itself. It is somewhat annoying to have three cds when I think it could have fit onto two. Still, more than I have complaints, I have compliments about it.

The most trhilling part of this incredible tribute is the DVD with interviews with the orginal cast members, the director, cherographer, designer and the composer! Truly a collectors dream come true! All fans of great musicial theater will cherish this collectors tribute to a great show.
Toe Tapping music - but disappointing DVD!.......2007-02-08
Having misplaced my original CD, I saw this on Amazon and decided to buy it. I was particularly excited about the prospect of seeing some of the songs recorded from stage productions.
CD1 is the same as the Cast Recording that I purchased before.
CD2 was a bit of "fun". It was interesting to hear the songs that were cut from the "new" show and it's not a great leap of the imagination to see why they probably were. It was also interesting to hear other peoples renditions of various songs from the show. Especially people like Liza Minelli, Melanie Griffith and even Linda Carter (yes, our very own "Wonder Woman").......
While I love the show and the music of "Chicago", I have to say I was disappointed by the DVD in this set. The feature about the re-opening of Chicago, was informative, but would have been better if intersperced with clips from the show(s) or even rehersals. The section that I was most excited about, the stage numbers of "All That Jazz", "All I Care About" and "When You're Good To Mama", were not the entire numbers recorded from a stage production......nor were they in English! There were clips from various productions (Japan, Germany...and a few others) all edited together to give the viewer a brief "taste" of the song in different languages.
I would have been much happier with the 3 songs, recorded from the stage production, sung in their entirity, in English.
That is the only bad thing I have to say about this set.
Definitely a buy for huge "Chicago" fans only. For the more casual admirer, go and buy the original cast recording album.....you'll be just as happy!
the new Razzle Dazzle.......2007-01-24
It is unfortunate that the previous reviewer (who disliked this boxed set so much he reviewed it twice) did not read the product description first to understand what he was buying. Yes, this celebration of the tenth anniversary of the revival of CHICAGO does include the original CD; those who own that disk and have only a casual interest in the show may not want to purchase this. But for less than twice the price of the single CD, this set offers a taste of the many stars who have done turns in this production since it opened (including the original 1975 production), both on Broadway and around the world, plus a DVD of interviews with those involved in the production, and a booklet full of other goodies. Perhaps no one NEEDS a version of "All That Jazz" in German, but what fun! If you can't distinguish Brooke Shield from Ann Reinking or Liza Minelli from Bebe Neuwirth, by all means don't buy this boxed set. But if you want to catch some of the razzle-dazzle you may have missed, enjoy!
No Razzle Dazzle.......2007-01-11
I enjoyed both the revival production and the revival CD of Chicago. When they came up with the marketing ploy of a special 10th anniversary multi-disc set, this "Chicago" fan bought it even if the revival CD (which I already have) is part of the set. The various artist disc of famous stars who have starred in the production in the last 10-years did not offer anything exciting or interesting in their rendition other than their famous names. Worse, the documentary was not well presented and the clip from the show was actually just a teaser. It is so sad because Chicago is now the longest running revival in Broadway history and they have decided to put up a forgettable memorabilia that "Chicago" lovers will not treasure in the years to come. Such a waste. To ironically paraphrase a line in the show, there was simply "no razzle dazzle".

redux.......2007-07-06
Four of the songs on this CD (Oklahoma, Music of the Night, Cabaret, and All That Jazz) were on the earlier Ultimate Broadway. Of all the shows that have been on Broadway over the past 70+ years, including the ones that are currently running, there is no excuse for repeats!
Moderate Quality.......2003-06-20
I believe that the show selection for this CD was excellent. However the song selection and song order were not. Why pick "Your Daddy's Son" from Ragtime when you can have the amazing and fantastic "Prologue" from the same show. Also I believe that a mistake was made by slecting "I Don Quixote" from Man of La Mancha instead of the much more listenable "Impossible Dream." Also the overture from Gypsy is not the proper song to start out a CD. Perhaps the "Overture" from The Phantom of the Opera.
This is however an excellent example of showtunes for inexperienced members of the theatrical world.
POOR EXCUSE FOR SOME GOOD THEATER MUSIC.......2003-05-20
The best of Broadway? Sure, if you consider the best of Broadway only those songs taken only from RCA Victor cast recordings. Expect the expected: Tracks from "Ragtime," "Chicago," "42nd Street" and "Man of La Mancha," sung by the likes of Audra
McDonald, Bebe Neuwirth, Jerry Orbach and Brian Stokes Mitchell. Including a live recording of Barbara Cook warbling "Losing My Mind" from her "Mostly Sondheim" CD isn't exactly kosher. But then again, neither is this gimmick-riddled release. Curtain up?
Half-way, maybe. Light the lights? Dim them, please.

Product Description
This is a new recording of selections from the Broadway musical Chicago, by John Kander and Fred Ebb. The show was nominated for 11 Tony Awards in 1976, including Best Musical and Best Score. This album features two versions of each song: tracks 1-14 contain the background music and guide vocals, tracks 15-28 contain the accompaniment music alone. All songs are in the original show key, and show tempo.
The album is recorded in the CD+G format. When played in a karaoke machine, lyrics will appear on-screen. In a conventional CD player no lyrics will appear onscreen, however a booklet of the lyrics is enclosed in the CD jewel case.
Customer Reviews:
Bland Chicago Musical Karoake.......2007-01-10
I thought it was a very bland istrumental version of the songs from the Chicago musical. I ended up finding and buying another karoake version which was a much more entertaining version.
HORRIBLE BEYOND WORDS!.......2006-10-19
Do NOT BUY THIS CD! The singers are off-tune and lousy and sing with no feeling. The music in the backround dull and boring and sounds nothing like the actual soundtrack. Some wrong notes are hit and the rhythm is difficult to follow. THE MINUTE I LISTENED TO IT I THOUGHT IT WAS HORRIBLE AND WONDERED WHY THESE PEOPLE WERE HIRED TO MAKE THIS CD!!! Do not waste your money and time in buying this CD. I know I already did.
Not the best... but still fun.......2003-09-06
The music quality is ok. Better than I was expecting; however, it does sound like a MIDI file in some places.
My biggest criticism is that when the song breaks into parts, it only puts one part on the screen. For example, in "Funny Honey" at the end, it only has Amos' spoken part on the screen. Roxie's part is written in the booklet, but it would be better if that had both parts on the screen simultaneously. Also, on "We both reached for the Gun" the voices of the reporters are recorded, and I would have rather they weren't. And thirdly, the MC introductions aren't there on any song!
But other than these three things it is fun to get to sing along with a great musical.
If you love to sing, and you want to sing the Chicago songs........2002-10-08
If you love to sing, this is a must-buy for your collection.
I saw Chicago on Broadway with a top cast, and loved it. Then I bought the soundtrack, and sang along with it, and really enjoyed it. But when I found the karaoke CD, I bought it also because I love to sing, and with all of the words to all of the songs, I enjoy being accompanied by an orchestra, and not having to try to sing over the cast album. Although the performers voices on the karaoke are not those of the quality on the soundtrack from the show, the orchestral tracks allow me to sing, record, and listen to how I sound on my own (pretty good, I must say modestly)! And I just heard that the movie of Chicago is coming out later this year, and I can't wait! So this CD should be a great one to enable me to learn all of the words and melodies, without trying to sing over the voices of the soundtrack. Both are musts if you like Broadway shows, and super-musts if you love the music from the show as much as I do!
hooray.......2002-10-08
This album is a lot of fun. The recordings give listeners a sense of how they should sing along with the karaoke, and being able to have a track with just instruments for singing along is an innovative idea and I am glad this album is around. It's fun if you just feel like singing along, or if you are practicing for some sort of audition with a song from Chicago. Definitely worth the money
