Few would dispute that Frank Sinatra was one of the greatest popular singers of the 20th century. His voice had distinct power and majesty, whether he was belting out a swinging dance number or softly crooning a tender ballad. When he was at his height, no one could touch him, and the songs collected on Classic Sinatra showcase the range of his talent. Recorded during his memorable run for Capitol Records in the 1950s, the songs here are more than just his best, they're often the definitive recordings: "I Get a Kick out of You," "Young at Heart," "Witchcraft," "The Lady Is a Tramp," "In the Wee Small Hours," and "I've Got You Under My Skin." Like almost everything Sinatra recorded during this period, there isn't a dud to be found, which makes Classic Sinatra a perfect introduction to the work of this truly great talent. --Robert Burrow

Great Sinatra sound........2007-07-09
This CD has many classic Sinatra songs just as reflected by its name. Great CD for easy listening.
An Ideal Single Disc Collection Of Sinatra's Peak Years........2007-05-03
As someone who's been Sinatra's fan literally since he was a baby, I generally do consider myself an expert in his music. And since I consider myself someone with that expertise, I feel I have the right to suggest to beginning Sinatra (a new one enter's God's world every day) which is the best collection to introduce them into each phase of The Voice's career.
Now, like most hardcore Ol' Blue Eyes fans, I consider Sinatra's best period as an artist to be his tenure at Capitol Records. And like most fans, I consider the best introduction to that period is the three cd boxed set "The Capitol Years". However, that set may or may not be too pricey for beginning fans.
Now, those with that dilemma can hold themselves over with the 20 song, single disc "Classic Sinatra". Though nowhere near as concise the 75 song "The Capitol Years", "Classic Sinatra" boasts 20 songs that define Sinatra's style and artistic ability also boasts superior sound quality.
Among the clasics here are songs like "I've Got The World On A String", "I Get A Kick Out Of You", "I've Got You Under My Skin", "Witchcraft", "All The Way", "Come Fly With Me" and "Nice N' Easy", all songs which are instantly indentifiable with Sinatra because unmatchable ability to deliver a song. This goes evne moreso for songs like "My Funny Valentine" and "Someone To Watch Over Me", songs done contless times by numerous artists, yet it's always Sinatra's versions that are named definitive.
So while not as concise as its three disc predecssor, "Classic Sinatra" is still a solid introduction to The Greatest Artist Of All Time in his peak years.
Like a 45rpm disc.......2007-03-23
Should have been remastered but at that price I enjoyed crooning to my favorite lyrics.
My introduction into the world of Frank Sinatra........2007-01-23
My dad bought me this CD as a gift years ago. I didn't care for Frank at the time, but as I listened to this CD, I grew to love the music of Frank Sinatra. The time period this CD covers is during his years at Capitol Records, which is still my favorite label that he worked under. This CD is great - a lot of Sinatra classics when the man's voice was at his best. Fresh, chipper, and sharp. This is an excellent CD for someone who is new to Frank. I own the 4-CD disc set from his Capitol years as well, but this is a great little disc all on it's own.
This was my first Sinatra album..........2006-12-28
...and now I have got more than 20 albums by The Voice in my collection. I was into Rock and Jazz and never paid much attention to Sinatra, although I knew he was considered the best singer of the 20th century. When I heard this album I was absolutely shocked!!!. It is perfect!!! The voice, the songs, the arrangements, the sound... This album changed my life forever. After years ignoring Sinatra, I am such a big fan that my mother calls Him "your friend". Now I can only think about saving some money to buy more and more Sinatra albums!!!. Probably, if I had to select only 2 albums from my huge collection (more or less 1500 CDs and 500 vinyl LPs) this album would be the first, and the second would be some Bill Evans (the piano player, not the sax player).
I discovered Sinatra when a friend of mine, who is absolutely into Jazz, told me that Sinatra is his favourite singer of all times. And I thoug: "If me and Teo have more or less the same tastes in Jazz, I should try Sinatra". And this album was the perfect introduction to him.
So no doubts, if you are new to Sinatra, buy this album and you will so shocked that, like me, you won't stop buying more CDs by Him.
And I have to point something finally: I have read many of the reviews in amazon, recomending other albums or periods of 'ol blue eyes, but almost no one says nothing about his columbia years. I own the 4-CD box set "The best of the Columbia years (1943-1952)" and I think it is absolutely amazing. It contents mainly ballads, but Sinatra is in perfect voice, the arrangements by Axel Stordahl are fantastic, and the sound quality is quite good. Now I am listening to "The house I live in" and singing ...that's America to meeeee.
so BUY THIS ALBUM and you will changed forever!!!

Given his enormous talent and unparalleled musical history--not to mention the healthy, suffer-no-fools ego they inspired--it's hardly surprising that duets are relatively few and far between in Frank Sinatra's catalog, his smash duet on "Somethin' Stupid" with daughter Nancy notwithstanding. But in the heyday of the TV variety show, the star-hosted format virtually demanded musical cross-pollination, a tradition that carried over from radio. It's that fertile, largely unexplored territory that this rewarding, 21-track anthology (most previously unreleased on CD) explores in conjunction with the PBS special of the same name.
Here, Sinatra scales the jazz summit with Louis Armstrong on "Birth of the Blues" and does three electrifying collaborations with one of his faves, Ella Fitzgerald. Rat Pack cohorts Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr.--along with honorary member Bing Crosby--loosen up the legend as always, and even rival Elvis Presley gets the Chairman's respect on a wonderfully playful meeting-of-the-icons medley of "Witchcraft"-"Love Me Tender." A warm, welcome addition to the Sinatra canon, whose banter-filled performances emphasize the saloon singer supreme's humor and humanity. --Jerry McCulley

these are sinatra's songs.......2004-02-08
i'm a huge fan of ol' blue eyes, and i can't say i dislike this cd .. these are only some of his classic songs, and it's very enjoyable to listen to frank sinatra sing with some modern artists .. but some of the tracks are butchered by the other half of the duet .. they try to make it their own song, when the truth is, it's FRANK SINATRA's song .. it's his own genre, and some of the artists on the cd like gloria estefan, luther vandross, and julio iglesias, who are all in different music genres than sinatra, try too hard to make it sound different .. i guess they're trying to make the song unique, but it definitely doesn't work for me .. the highlights of the whole cd are "they can't take that away from me" & "new york, new york" and others
Duets III is a Disappointment.......2003-05-10
Although I loved "Duets" and "Duets II", "Duets III" simply does not make the grade. With 21 tracks, perhaps the producer thought that he'd make up for in quantity what the album lacks in quality. Quality is what is lacking in this album. The tracks are of poor acoustical quality compared to Duets 1 and 2. It sounds as though most of the tracks were lifted from TV and radio recordings - the sound quality truly suffers in the process. Oh, there are some brief rays of sunshine, but overall, the album only appeals to those who have to have every song Sinatra ever recorded.
I do not recommend this album. If you can get it used or at a discounted price it might be worth it, but even then, it is an album that disappoints.

Broad Variety for the Chairman.......2003-01-27
For many, Frank Sinatra is THE consummate crooner. And some of his work really shines anew when it's done in concert with another performer. Hence the success and quality of Duets and Duets II. So it's not unusual for another trip back to the vault to produce the Classic Duets. What results is a hodge-podge of duets which are more notable for their variety than their quality. As noted, many of these come from old videotape and such, so the sound quality is not the best on all the songs. and some of the medleys get tiresome, just bouncing from one song to another with neither performer bringing much to the collaboration. But it does also sport some one time collaborations with other premier artists of the era, including Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Prima & Keely Smith, Bing Crosby and fellow rat-packers Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. Acting as an interesting counterpoint are duets with his daughter Nancy, including a touching father-daughter duet of "You Make Me Feel So Old (Young)" that help to spotlight the paternal side of Frank. Collections such as this always seem to sport a surprise track that is just off the wall - on this one it's a duet with Frank and Elvis which, while not deep or groundbreaking, is surprisingly fun with each artist crooning the other's song.
This disc is not THE collection to get for Sinatra's work with other artists. It is a perfect disc for the fan who is looking for examples of his broad-based collaboration, and proof that the other Duets albums were not opportunistic collaborations, rather they were an outgrowth of what Frank had been doing all along.
Frank Sinatra Classic Duets.......2003-01-23
Quite disappointed. It is poor recording.
A pleasant surprise.......2002-12-30
A couple of notes while reading the other reviews. Capitol is merely the vessel-this collection comes via the Sinatra family vault(Nancy,Frank Jr.&Tina's holdings)and is pre-Reprise(Bristol)material,hence,no Jobim, which occured in the '60s. The liner notes are filled with recollections by the kids-OK,I guess, but I miss the sure and steady hand of Will Friedwald,a fan and critic, taking us through this material. Having said this,I suspect the "Duets" concept was used as a brand and adds another release of family material(often bootlegged) being made available through legitimate means, after the debacle of the Artanis gold recordings of a few years ago. The '90s "Duets"I&II were purchased by well-meaing gift givers and, sadly, served as an intro to Frank for many new ears but proved to be a very successful brand, hence the marketing people dusting it off again. As for the material in this collection-this will stand along my copies of the other Duets but will actually be played rather than gathering dust. Along with the many raves from others here(the words about Frank & Peggy Lee are quite insightful)may I cast a vote for the medley with Dinah Shore. Frank & Dinah allude to performing this same group of songs before,(probably on one of Dinah's shows)but, rather than sounding tired, they just seem to love this material and Dinah's voice is a fine foil to Frank's(IMHO-Keely Smith was the perfect duet partner for Frank). A pleasant addition to the collection, not a moment to feel ashamed by Frank or any of his partners. I'm ready for the next one, please.

Customer Reviews:
Sinatra at his RAREST and JAZZIEST best!.......2007-01-29
"Perfectly Frank" (Bravura 103) is an incredible CD of Frank Sinatra's small jazz combo sides from his early '50's Radio Show, ""To Be Perfectly Frank." Nearly all songs are with just trios, quartets, quintets, or solo piano. It contains a whopping 31 tracks of wonderful small group jazz with Sinatra singing on every track. Many of these songs he NEVER recorded commercially. He was at the HEIGHT of his career & vocal talents at this point in his life. The sound quality is really quite good, considering this was just a radio show. ALL songs are pure music, with no chatting or applause throughout the songs (as it was recorded in a small studio, with just Sinatra and the band). All you get is the wonderful music.
If you are lucky, and can find this wonderful CD, you must also find "After Hours" on the Bravura label. It contains 33 more tracks from this same radio show. Every song is different on each CD, so there's no overlap, and they have the same sound quality.
Both are out-of-print, and quite difficult to find. That's unfortunate, because you will not hear a better representation of Sinatra's JAZZY vocal abilities elsewhere.

It's rare that you get to sing the songs of Cole Porter, Johnny Mercer, Jerome Kern, Harold Arlen, Rogers and Hart, Jimmy Van Heusen and all the other great writers on this album without walking away feeling totally fulfilled - that's just how I feel. With arrangements by the great Sammy Nestico and with the wonderful musician we have on this album it just doesn't get much better than that. Singing music that was born and bred in America gives us all a great insight into a musical legacy that will carry on forever. I feel very honored to have had a small part in it. This album is dedicated in loving memory to my friend and mentor, Sammy Cahn.

Best CD You May Not Have Heard Of.......2005-10-03
This is a find. Big band sound, great voice, superb renditions and equally superb arrangements. Treat yourself to Mr. Stallone's upbeat, wonderful treatments on favorites such as Day In Day Out, I Wish I Was In Love Again and more. This CD should be a best seller and I became aware of it be reading reviews on Amazon.
Treat yourself to a wail of of a CD. It will get your mojo going.
Frank Stallone is no ..."Sly".......2005-09-01
Frank Stallone has taken some old standards and given them a new and graceful touch. Doe's he "mimic" a little of "Frank"... or Bobby "D" ... of course.... and what singer of any quality hasn't. But Frank does do something special. I don't know where he has been over the years.. or where he picked up his training, but he has a most pleasant voice and he treats the lyrics the way the composer intended them to be. I don't know if his "big brother" Sly had anything to do with his orchestrations or promotion but even if he did, it was a venture worth taking. It is sad that one with such talent has not had the exposure he deserves. Where has he been in recent years? Why hasn't the music world been privy to his talent on a larger scale! He deserves far more recognition than what has been available.
Keep on singin' Frank....Your audience will grow until you are more appreciated... and then you will have "Arrived"
Good luck Frank Stallone.... you deserve the very best.

This swings baby!.......2005-01-30
I wrote produced and created a Modern Swing/Standards radio show which was syndicated nationally. I know the players, I will submit to you that this is one of the best examples of excellent singing, arrangements, and song selection I've seen. Anyone who claims that Stallone is any less than a highly talented singer, doesn't know a damn thing, some may call themselves jazz fans, but they wouldn't know jazz if it hit them in the butt. For the idiot who claims Frank is jumping on a fad. LISTEN UP. This album was recorded in 1990, and recently re-released. In fact my CD is titled "Day in Day Out". As the other gentlemen so well stated, there are some of you who likely have a preconceived notion or predjudice due to the name Stallone. Shut up already, if Frankie Laine, Tony Bennet, Frank Sinatra, and Billy Eckstine had great things to say about Stallone's singing, who needs your take?
Love, Love, LOVED it!.......2004-09-09
I am a musician in a band that plays vocal jazz. I buy and own thousands of CDs of vocalists singing songs from the pool of songs often called the Great American Songbook. Often I just buy a CD to hear different versions of the classics and to get ideas of "new" songs for us to perform. I was BLOWN away by this CD. What I find amazing is some of the reviews that did not like the vocals. I think they were fantastic! His voice, phrasing, attitude and style all won me over. This IS my favorite male vocalist right now. If you want an artist who sings today the way it was done "yesterday"... Frank is the man.
A great recording of the standards - and a "sleeper" of 2003.......2003-12-28
Had I not read a brief, yet positive, review of "In Love In Vain" in one of the Seattle papers earlier this year, I daresay I would never have known about this release, much less have even considered buying it. Fortunately, I did find out about it, and was pleasantly surprised by what I heard.
I'm sure that I am not in the age group where the music industry markets the standards as sung by Sinatra, Martin, et al. Or, this classic music is recorded by a "flavor of the month" pop idol and then marketed to my age group. That said, I do listen to this genre quite a bit, and so, I was eager to hear Mr. Stallone's interpretations would sound. From the first track, I was instantly hooked.
Mr. Stallone presents each of these songs the way they were intended to be sung when they were originally written. His vocals are solid and evoke all of power and energy of these songs. "One For My Baby" is my personal favorite on this CD; it is a solid, heart-tugging ballad, and Mr. Stallone's vocals surely do emphasize the emotion at the core of this song. With the combination of the outstanding arrangements by the Sammy Nestico Orchestra, he truly transports the listener back to the era of smoky showrooms, cocktails, and big band sound.
One of the mistakes that musicians make when re-recording these classics - or covering any other great song, for that matter - is to over-sing or adding those annoying vocal flourishes. I guess it is meant to "update" the sound, or make it the musician's own. Mr. Stallone doesn't do that here. One gets the sense that he does respect these songs and is not under any illusions that he needs to modernize them.
Obviously, "In Love In Vain" would draw comparisons to the two "Great American Songbook" CD's released by Rod Stewart this year. Having been one who has actually listened to all three of these discs, I can safely state that Mr. Stallone created a far better CD that easily outpaces the combined Rod Stewart efforts. In part, this statement is based on my belief that Mr. Stewart does not have the voice that translates well to these discs. Plus, the overproduction, slick packaging, and questionable duets of the Stewart discs make these standards too "sugary" and otherwise of inferior quality. By staying true to the original arrangements and minimal production, Mr. Stallone could easily make a case as the only one to carry this music to future generations. The endorsement from the great Tony Bennett only solidifies this claim.
Mr. Stallone unfairly takes a lot of flak from critics who accuse him of riding Sylvester's coattails. There is no question that Frank Stallone is an accomplished musician, and perhaps with "In Love In Vain", I think that he has finally found a niche where he can break out from the shadows and have a great deal of success. This is one of the great "sleeper" CD's of the year, and deserves to be heard by music fans of all ages and tastes. I hope that Mr. Stallone can collaborate with the Sammy Nestico Orchestra again and release another album of these great standards sometime soon.

Customer Reviews:
"love affair with the music of Frank Sinatra".......2000-04-29
The price of the CD is worth it's weight in gold to hear various artists perform Sinatra's material. None of the selections are meant to sound like Sinatra, but give thanks to an entertainer who was fortunate enough to sing and record with some of the best arrangers in the business. Frank brought to the surface many tunes that were good and he made them classics.
We have Ella Fitzgerald opening with "THE TENDER TRAP", never better - "THE SECOND TIME AROUND" has Mel Torme with his smooth "velvet fog" style - "STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT" gives Jack Jones something to sing about - "SOFTLY AS I LEAVE YOU" leaves Matt Monro singing this sentimental ballad - "IN THE WEE SMALL HOURS OF THE MORNING" was simply brighter with vocal by Johnny Hartman - composer Paul Anka has his way singing "MY WAY".
A pure delight from Hip-O Records is this compilation. This is a love affair in song with the best of the best, singing songs made popular by the "chairman of the board" - Sinatra!
