Hedwig (John Cameron Mitchell) is a Berlin singer whose sex-change operation left her with an "angry inch" and a taste for eyeliner. Closer to the New York Dolls than to New York's post-Sondheimian composers, Mitchell and composer-lyricist Stephen Trask rehabilitate the decadent bombast of early-'70s glam rock in a succession of catchy numbers. Hedwig makes a great transition from stage to record because the book is wafer-thin and lets the band focus on individual songs instead of trying to integrate a narrative: this is indeed the most radio-friendly cast album in a long time. So what if Trask has never met a power chord he didn't like? Very disappointing, considering what it could have been.......2007-04-20

Take a look at the running times:

Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes

What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.

C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.

Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.

This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.

I listen to music all day with patients in my dental chair. This one is a winner with everyone. Patients always comment on how they recognize a song. Who doesn't love John Williams? His music transcends time.

This 4 cd pack is an anthology of all John Williams works. From his earlier works "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Jaws" right through "Indiana Jones" and the most recent"Star Wars" prequel movies are included. Williams work in thriller and horror are also included. If you are into soundtracks and love movie music this is an essential buy. The quality of the music is excellent. With ten or more tracks on each cd it's well worth the money.

This four CD set expands on the previously released John Williams Greatest Hits. It's a grand collection of nearly four hours of famous music scores from over forty years. There are many songs never before available in any collection. The short liner notes tell a great tale of musical movie history and include all of his numerous award nominations and wins. Each song (oddly enough) mentions the actors and the director, so fond are John Williams's memories of his work with these people. All of the conductors are mentioned along with specific orchestras, choirs, arrangement and orchestration specialists and even the publishers (contractual, I am sure). The only things missing are his early television scores, such as those for "Lost In Space" (by Johnny Williams back then). But with four discs, one has nothing to complain about and everything to enjoy!

John Williams: 40 Years of Outstanding Film Music.......2006-11-28

I have been a huge fan of John Williams and I have known about his music for years. However, I never actually bought any of his music on CD. I was rather skeptical about purchasing this CD but when it arrived I knew I had made the right choice. The sound quality of the compilation is outstanding. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do a great job under the direction of Paul Bateman. The original London Symphony Orchestra CDs of John Williams' Star Wars Trilogy CDs are marginally better but this is still a great CD compilation. If you love ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter, you will love this compilation soundtrack. Buy it, listen to these CDs in the car and enjoy every minute of the collection!!!

The musical Rent is said to have revived the rock musical in the 1990s, but it's Hedwig and the Angry Inch that could revive the genre's movie fortunes in the new millennium. Adapted and directed from Stephen Trask's music and lyrics by John Cameron Mitchell, who also reprises the lead role of Hedwig, the flamboyantly unlucky victim of a botched sex-change operation, this is as good as a rock musical gets.

The soundtrack follows the cast album pretty faithfully, except that the whole thing somehow feels turbocharged. Fast numbers like "Angry Inch" (with fab backup vocals by Miriam Shor) and "Exquisite Corpse" rock harder; ballads like "The Long Grift" and "Midnight Radio" are more poignant. The original off-Broadway cast recording was good, but now everything feels sharper, better defined. Even Hedwig's backing band, the Angry Inch, is beefed up by exHüsker Dü Bob Mould on guitar, while Girls Against Boys contribute to "Freaks," a track that would be right at home on an old David Bowie album. Even your punk pals will approve when they catch you listening to this musical. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Take The Wig Off The Shelf.......2007-04-19

When I lived in Idaho, my pal worked at the Long Ear record store and would come home with the most wonderful music; in 1999 she brought home the soundtrack to the Off Broadway buzz Hedwig & The Angry Inch, a sordid rock tale of Hedwig, the German rock singer who never made it to the big concert hall. Starting in West Berlin as a confused little boy, Hedwig is ready to stick his head in the oven until the muse of Olivia Newton-John and others hits him. He heads to the sex change operating table and through even more trauma comes out a little more woman but not quite successfully. So bitter and looking for love, Hedwig tells us the whole story through glam rock influenced songs including his problems with love toy boy Johnny Gneusosis. The soundtrack was great and when the film came out in 2001, John Cameron Mitchell re-recorded it all. The songs are all sing along glam rock a la T Rex and old Bowie, including the rocking title track about that so unflattering angry inch ("my sex change operation got botched/ now I've all got is a Barbie doll crotch/ I've got an angry inch") Humorous yet so tragic and so much better than the original Broadway version since back up female vocals are brought in. The whole album is chock full of songs with witty lyrics and of course a story to tell including "The Origin Of Love," one of my favorites "Sugar Daddy" - a rockabilly little romp about that oh so wonderful figure who takes care of you and my ultimate favorite "Wig In A Box" (I put on some make-up/ turn on the 8-track/ and pull the wig down from the shelf/ suddenly I'm Miss Farrah Fawcett from TV/ until I wake up / and I turn back to myself). Hedwig's soundtrack is a venture into self discovery, self loathing and self love and this is just as good as the film and show.

Not as good w/o the movie.......2007-03-17

Some of the songs don't have the same punch without the brilliant visuals from the movie. I could be wrong but some seem like different versions. Still worth having if you love the movie as much as I did.

Evoking the Glam-rock music of the 70's, Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a remarkably solid soundtrack, every song works and a couple of cuts ( Orgin of love, and Wig in a box ) are hit material. You'll find yourself playing this CD a lot.

Yes!, this is an indispensable soundtrack. If you have arrived to read this, I just can tell you: dont hesitate, order this superb work of poetry and music.

SHEER ROCK MUSICAL PERFECTION. JOHN CAMERON MITCHELL AND STEPHEN TRASK ARE AMAZING. FUNNY TO ROCK OUT TO A SHOW SOUNDTRACK... THAT WAS A FIRST. BUT YOU CAN'T HELP YOURSELF. I PREFER THIS TO THE FILM SOUNDTRACK FOR NO OTHER REASON THAN IT HAS A RAW EDGE TO IT UNLIKE THE SLICK STUDIO TRACKS OF THE OTHER.

Great songs.......2005-10-18

This whole album is filled with so much emotion it makes you weep. Both the stage version and the film soundtrack are great albums if you are a fan of the show or not. No matter what anyone's personal views are or what they feel about the subject matter, you can't help but feel for this character and go with him/her on the journey.
The songs are angry, beautiful and full of raw emotion. Who doesn't understand "Wicked Little Town" sometimes?

Perfect Companion Piece.......2005-09-14

Even though I saw the show many years ago (with JCM), it took the film to get me to purchase the original soundtrack. I never felt a need to purchase the cast CD. However, I finally decided to take a chance and am very happy that I did. If you love the soundtrack, the cast CD adds another layer to the trauma of Hedwig. I enjoy listening to both of them equally.

I love this Album. Thats all. Anyway I can not stop listening to this CD. I listened to this only CD for four straight hours on a roadtrip. I still am not tired of this CD. Theres still little lyrics I have missed. If someone reading this does not buy the CD, there is seriously something wrong with you. Because its the best CD ever.

Typical Bach - everything is perfect, but unlike contemporary music that could be classed as perfect, this album never fails to move even those that do not share Bach's religiosity.
Combine Bach with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and you have the best with the best. No-one can use power, emotion, verve, and vigour like Fischer-Dieskau. Those two together make this recording a must-have in any serious music fan's collection.

Dull Epics.......2006-09-27

EPICS is plagued by the muddled sound of TELARC's recordings. I noticed this trend beginning with TELARC's Hollywood's Greatest Hits, Vol. 2. The recoding seems flat. Also, this recording is a bit bombastic and just not representative of the original scores. The Suite from Gladiator is a good case in point. It glosses right over the basic themes presented in the film with an annoying nonce lance.

Very Disappointing .......2006-09-27

EPICS is very disappointing. It is nowhere up to the usual standards of the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. The recordings are harsh and just too showy. There is no heart, only might and if these are supposed to be epics, what is MINORITY REPORT doing there?

Chilling versions of the best scores ever written.......2004-04-24

This cd is an essential for any person that particularly enjoys the score in films. Epics is a full length cd containing 14 songs performed by the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra under Erich Kunzel.

Usually, I am weary of cds that come out with songs from movies that aren't the original recordings, but I have to say there should be no worries with this cd. The songs remain exactly the same in tempo and sound as you hear them in the movies.

The choices for this cd was amazing. Every song that you hear are the songs that make the movie it is in, most often giving you chills and goosebumps as the music encompasses you into the movie (like what happened to me when I saw Lord of the Rings). From the Theme from 2001: a Space Oddysey to Star Wars: Attack of the Clones to Lord of the Rings, these songs are performed beautifully with a clear and crisp sound.

This is a really fabulous collections of songs. There is a great balance of old and new. This isn't a collection from one single genre and the diversity keeps the mix interesting. It's great to hear songs that wouldn't normally be noticed while a movie is playing and it's also great to hear those easily recognizable tunes from popular movies.

These cd's are a great set of varied classical music. Pavane is my favorite. Additionally, Classical Chillout 2 offers theme music from Harry Potter and it is very well done.

Dull Epics.......2006-09-28

While the original compositions that this recording is based off of were all notable compositions, worthy of recognition and inclusion on a compilation disc such as this, it pains me to say that the Telarc/Cincinatti team has fallen from glory with this one (and a few others). Contrary to other reviewers, Kunzel was not the arranger for most or all of these. Someone named Jospeh Price, a name I hope never to see again on a Telarc recording unless immediately preceded by the words "not arranged by". I cannot stomach his cliched, bombastic, and empty endings most of all, but the arrangement (or despoiling of) the Lord Of The Rings themes is probably the worst mustical travesty I've come across. There is no resemblance to the original work except by accident. The only tracks I care for at all on the disc are the ones untouched by him, including the Overture from Lawrence of Arabia, the Harry Potter themes (apparently a Williams arrangement), and perhaps another track or two. Overall a painful experience. Try some vintage Kunzel instead.

Simply goes to show that good music is more than the composition: Arranging and conducting are the other elements which Eric Kunzel is a master at. The "Magnificent Seven" is a masterpiece of knowledge of the intent of the piece, instrumentation and clever ways of brining out the best that each instrument has to offer.

Fabulous compilation of movie themes!.......2004-01-25

This is one of the best movie theme compilations I have come across in a long time. With Erich Kunzel's able hands, the beautiful themes from "The Lord of the Rings," "Gladiator," "Harry Potter," "Dr. Zhivago," "Lawrence of Arabia," "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," "Ben Hur" and others are vividly brought to life.

My favorite has to be the "Fellowship of the Ring" suite which, at over 6 minutes, is the longest track in the CD. It includes the fabulous themes I love from the film such as the Hobbiton, Mines of Moria, Amon Hen, Isengard and Breaking of the Fellowship themes from the original soundtrack. The "Gladiator" suite comes as a close second but there really isn't a mediocre theme music in this collection. Erich Kunzel has done a fabulous job of selecting, orchestrating and arranging these wonderful pieces and I consider this one of the best classical CDs in my collection. Superb!

If it's powerful and majestic music you're looking for, you've come to the right place with Telarc's release of "Epics", featuring the world renown Cincinnati Pops Orchestra under the direction of maestro Erich Kunzel. In most cases the performances closely match the original film score themes ~ listening to this album is like watching the film all over again, as the tension builds up and the release is right in your face ~ just like being there. Quality sound is the reason to purchase this CD, simply amazing.

Many "film-score-buffs" will already have some or many of the cues in their collections ~ but for the avid collector this is a dream come true. All under one umbrella is Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Tan Dun, Alex North, Miklos Rozsa, Max Steiner, John Williams and Hans Zimmer doing what they do best...composing!

vintage Maurice Andre: absolutely top notch.......2000-11-04

The first person's review said it all; absolutely top notch. There's none better than Maurice Andre for baroque trumpet anywhere. For other great CDs later in Andre's career (closer to his peak and he's only getting warmed up now well into his sixties), look for legendary performances of Maurice Andre and the Academy of St. Martin's in the Fields (also Berlin Philharmonic but there are many others).

Great Interpretations by the Master.......2000-07-20

This is a collection of some of the greatest recorded performances of the works included. The recording quality, alas, is very uneven, and some of the items are decidedly rough as recordings. But as performances, ahhh! Several of the pieces (the exquisite Handel concerto, for example) were actually written for oboe, but Andre makes them sound as if they were not only conceived for the trumpet, but as if they were never meant for anything else. The orchestral accompaniments are excellent -- oddly, especially in some of the older, rougher items. And crowning the whole recording is a benchmark version of Haydn's greatest concerto, the wonderful Trumpet Concerto. The slow movement is gently lyrical and dreamy -- which are not easy attributes to draw from a trumpet! -- and the famous and delightful finale is brilliant and big-hearted and joyous. At this budget price the disc makes a remarkable bargain!
