Only Broadway CD You'll Ever Need [Cast Recording]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Could any single disc live up to the title The Only Broadway CD You'll Ever Need? Of course not, though this 76-minute disc gives it a good try. Out of the RCA vaults come original cast performances such as Zero Mostel's "If I Were a Rich Man," Carol Channing's "Hello Dolly," and Oliver's "Consider Yourself." From topnotch revivals come Patti LuPone's "Anything Goes," Peter Gallagher's "Luck Be a Lady," Alan Cumming's "Money," and Bebe Neuwirth's "All That Jazz." Also included are selections from newer shows Titanic and Ragtime. The collection starts to get thin when it has to hunt for available versions of classic songs, ending up with an "America" from Jerome Robbins' Broadway, "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'" from the 1979 Oklahoma! revival, and an "Impossible Dream" from Colm Wilkinson's solo album--all fine recordings, but nothing that could be considered a first choice. And of course there are many omissions, most notably the shows of Stephen Sondheim (a longtime RCA artist, even!). A follow-up, The Only Other Broadway CD You'll Ever Need, proved what everyone expected--the original's title was indeed an impossible dream. But it got your attention, didn't it? --David Horiuchi --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

where is all the music.......2001-11-05
Okay all of those songs are great but I have a question. Where is Andrew LLoyd Webber on this CD? Jesus Christ Superstar, Joseph and the amazing technicolor dreamcoat, Evita and CATS? How can you manage to make a CD of Broadway with out Andrew Lloyd Webber? They need to re-do this cd.
Terrific, except for...........2000-01-08
The CD only had one problem. Where's Annie? It's one of the best musicals out there with some of the best songs. Where's TOMORROW or HARD KNOCK LIFE? Other than that, it's a great CD
I LUV this CD.......1999-12-27
This CD (and her new one THE ONLY OTHER BROADWAY CD YOU'LL EVER NEED) contains some of the the greatest hits of the broadway musicals, from the very beguinning to this years smash hits. If you want a great collection of songs, this collection is for you. The recordings are all very good and nothing is fake. You won't be sorry for buying this CD! I knew very little of the songs when I got it, and now I know them all by heart! Enjoy!

A Good Promotion for RCA Victor.......1999-10-31
This CD may not be the only Broadway CD you'll ever need because it leaves out songs from many high profile and popular musicals, but it does have a wide variety from what RCA Victor produced. It is a nice CD with some sound choices of music ... I enjoy listening to it.

the other only other broadway Cd you'll ever need.......2001-11-05
that needs to come out there are still some great songs expecially by Andrew Lloyd Webber that need to be in this collection i was very happy to see that Evita finally made it in this collection of CDs. But CATS??? Where is that?
Better than the first.......2000-07-19
While the first disc of this series contains the show-stoppers you would expect from an album titled "The Only Broadway CD You'll Ever Need," its sequel delivers the songs that live in your gut. Most of these selections are on any B'way lover's list of defining moments in theatre. While I was somewhat repulsed by the placement of the over-sweet "My Favorite Things" right after Bernstein's poignant "Make Our Garden Grow," the witty liner notes by Bill Rosenfield and the first-rate recordings make this a must-own CD.
Need?.......1999-10-27
I hoped when the first album came out with the title "The Only Broadway CD You'll Ever Need" that RCA was joking. This new title convinces me they were. As collections of Broadway-iana go, this is pretty good, mixing as it does the classics (i.e., songs from musicals that really had melodies in them) such as "Finian's Rainbow" and "Damn Yankees" with more recent efforts that feature chord progressions and all sorts of let's-rival-Hollywood effects that cannot be seen on recordings any way (e.g.,"Phantom"). Quite some time ago, RCA had a lovely set of 10 or so CDs devoted to Broadway shows in which the selections were gathered under some theme, usually not very successfully; so all this CD does is sort of update the older series which I have and still use in my seminars on American music. But for any collection that does not have the full versions, this album is a very nice substitute. Warning: several of these selections are from revival performances which were on RCA label while the orginal cast recordings were not. Also the "Call Me Madam" selection is from a studio recording with Dinah Shore who had to replace Ethel Merman who was under contract with Decca at the time!
