Saw the Broadway show!!!!.......2007-07-13
Holy Moly- The movie is terrible and the broadway musical is PURE Heaven! What a blast. Go Go GO! It's the most fun I've had in a theater in years!
Just saw the Broadway show!.......2007-07-09
let's face it the movie sucks; the soundtrack is pretty great (with nostalgia's glow). so, i was sooo shocked by the stage version. the creators figured that taking a crappy, dated film and sending it up is, if not easier, better than trying to recreate a classic. trust me, that's the only reason i looked at this listing, haha. it made me realize that even the crap from our past can be good enough to look back on fondly.
XANADU still rocks!.......2007-06-04
Yep! Proud to say I own the CD and DVD. The movie was corney but the soundtrack was great! I remember seeing the movie when I was younger and left the theater happy because it was all fantasy and I hummed to all the songs. Olivia has a voice of a goddess and I I'll never get tired listening to "MAGIC" over and over again. If anybody come visit NYC go see XANADU on broadway. I had such a good time and the show is real funny because they make a parady of the movie.
great for nostalgia.......2007-05-22
Great CD for "old" people that remember it. The Cliff Richard songs are kind of plain, but the rest is good to listen to.
I love Xanadu.......2007-03-23
I've been a big fan of this movie and soundtrack since I was a kid so I may be a little bias, but if you like the movie you'll mostly likely like the soundtrack as well. Nice 80s music.

Not exactly a string quartet.......2006-01-09
Calling this a "string quartet" tribute is a bit misleading, on two counts: firstly, (and granted, this is a nitpick) the traditional string quartet comprises two violins, a viola, and a cello (no bass or other add-ons); the second shortcoming is much more serious.
Other than the solo violins, most of the music has been produced electronically--that's right, the "quartet" is made up of a couple of violinists accompanied by a computer! Anyone who buys this recording expecting to hear the Canadian power trio re-invented by classical musicians is getting ripped off. Is it any wonder that the front cover describes the "artists" as a generic "string quartet," rather than telling you exactly to whom you're listening?
The arrangements are actually not bad at all; it's a shame that whoever put them together didn't feel the need to hire real musicians.
Quirky, but quality work........2005-09-12
This CD was well produced and has a fine range and depth of sound. The music itself very well mirrors the focus of the project, the best band of all time (in my opinion, of course) RUSH. Some people, like my wife (who is also a RUSH fan), find the string quartet treatment of any rock band somewhat disturbing. I find it an enjoyable change. All things considered, it is obvious that a lot of hard work went into every aspect of the CD, this isn't some "fly by night" company. I'm sure the musicians were tired keeping up with the fast paced rythms of YYZ and other high tempo songs. The recording is crisp. The sound is clear. The music is arranged true to the original songs. There's really nothing more I could want as a RUSH fan who also likes symphonic music from time to time. This disc certainly isn't for everyone, but if you're curious and on the fence, I suggest you'll probably like it.
The thought is nice... but falls a little short........2005-03-09
This is certainly an honor to the band and their great music. But, it lacks something. A few of the cuts come off ok -- but others just rub me wrong. I think it could have worked better had it been arranged differently. (I have always thought Rush tunes would sound great played by a full orchestra -- it seems to me a full percussion section is required).
A very pleasant surprise.......2005-03-04
I am, and have been, a huge RUSH fan for many years now and I was utterly amazed by this CD. It is outstanding.
Now, I will be the first person to admit that I'm not the world's biggest fan of violin or cello music.. Let alone tribute albums... But, this was like nothing I had ever heard before. The complexities of RUSH's arrangements and melodies lend itself perfectly to the classical sounds of the string quartet. The performance is both dynamic and moving. The music flows so seamlessly and beautifully giving a unique new way to appreciate the already expansive music of RUSH. I give it my highest recommendations.
To the magnificent performers on this album I say "Bravo" and offer a standing ovation. I can only hope that you will see fit to release a second tribute album.
Stop The Madness!.......2004-12-10
No, no, no, no!
String Quartet People: please go back to what you do best and leave rock-n-roll alone.
Guitar Hero Shredders: please leave Bach, Beethoven and the other masters alone!
Enough said!

"forgotten" gifted jazz pianist.......2007-02-10
Dolo Coker (1927-1983) may not have been a very well-known jazz pianist or composer, but he sure did have talent. "California Hard" is a testament to Coker's mastermind and genius. Recorded on December 27, 1976 this session includes the following fellow sidemen: Blue Mitchell (trumpet, flugelhorn), Art Pepper (alto and tenor sax), Leroy Vinnegar (bass) and Frank Butler (drums). Coker is just one of many other terrific jazz musicians overlooked today, despite having played with legends such as Ben Webster, Dexter Gordon and Sonny Stitt.
The sound quality on these tracks is generally of a high quality, and the group plays together as the friends they were. On the previous day the same musicians, with the exception of Art Pepper, recorded Coker's debut album under the title "Dojo!". This is assertive West Coast hard bop sure to bring news fans to Coker, and will equally be enjoyed by Pepper and Mitchell fans. A nice selection to add to anyone's collection here.

Customer Reviews:
Great music, superb recording, and a couple of added treats.......2005-06-11
I treasured several of these Gerhardt/NPO film score releases on cassette as a film-fan teen, and this CD is no different. Gerhardt's interpretations of these selections (with Herrmann present at the sessions) are stunning, true to the original compositions, with all the passion and grandeur that they deserve without having to conform to a) screen timing, and b) the limitations of monaural optical film soundtrack methods of the time. As another reviewer pointed out, Herrmann is known for his great Hitchcock film scores, but his other work was no less marvelous. (Typical example, his score for THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, making exceptional use of piano, deep bass brass and the unusual but appropriate Theremin.)
An intriguing footnote.... For CITIZEN KANE's portrayal of Susan Alexander's disastrous opera debut, Herrmann needed a grand opera excerpt that could convey the pandemonium, confusion, and Wagnerian excess of an opera, and showcase the soprano as having a legitimate voice, but one incapable of matching a smothering orchestra arrangement. No such selection from grand opera sufficed, so Herrmann composed his own. His fictitious SALAMMBO recitative and aria astutely illustrate in abstract, subtextual musical syntax the anguish that Alexander felt participating in Kane's delusion that she would be a great opera star. In fact, the libretto is derived from Racine's "Phedre," in which the heroine begs her lover to kill her and release her from shame. For the film, the light lyric soprano Herrmann used was appropriately overwhelmed by the thunderous arrangement. For this June, 1974, recording, a truly capable, genuine opera star (a then up-and-coming pro named Kiri Te Kanawa ... yes you read that correctly, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa) was recruited. She matches the orchestra, and you can hear SALAMMBO as it was written by Herrman. It's the jewel of this recording.
Finally, that these Gerhardt/NPO recordings are available on CD with Dolby Surround encoding is NO gimmick. (This info is missing from the Product Details, but the large cover image indicates the encoding.) These analog recordings sound FABULOUS with a receiver in Dolby Surround, Pro Logic, or Pro Logic II Music decoding. (I don't recommend you use "movie" settings, as the music isn't really meant to be channeled to Left, Right, and Center.) In straight stereo, or Surround, you can hear Herrman's music as clear as if you were in the concert hall. This CD is a must-have for Herrmann fans, and home theatre aficionados.
An essential recording.......2000-10-11
This CD is an essential addition to any film score collection. It's the best recording in the RCA "Classic Film Scores" series conducted by the late Charles Gerhardt; unlike many of the other entries in the series, this disc favors substantial, extended suites over brief snippets. Bernard Herrmann personally selected the works to be included; he was also present (and played a significant role) at the recording sessions.
Gerhardt's readings of excerpts from "Citizen Kane" are flawless and have never been surpassed; the performance of the "Salammbo" aria (by then-little-known soprano Kiri Te Kanawa) is dazzling. "Beneath the Twelve-Mile Reef" and "White Witch Doctor," two forgotten Fox films from 1953, are represented by suites replete with brilliant coloristic effects, including the bizarre and disturbing sounds of the serpent in "White Witch Doctor," and the bold and evocative use of nine (!) harps to illustrate underwater scenes in "Beneath the Twelve-Mile Reef." Pianist Joaquin Achucarro's performance of the intense "Concerto Macabre" from "Hangover Square" (1945) makes a convincing case for this work as an independent piece of concert music, and the brief but ferocious "Death Hunt" from the 1951 film noir "On Dangerous Ground" is a perfect curtain-raiser.
Herrmann is mainly known for his collaborations with Alfred Hitchcock, but if you only know his scores for "Hitch," you're missing an entirely different side to Herrmann. This disc provides an ideal cross-section of his wildly creative approach to more traditional Hollywood films; it's also one of the best film music anthologies ever recorded. Buy this; you won't be disappointed.

revisiting Xanadu.......2007-05-02
Barry Harris recorded this spectacular solo piano album for Xanadu Records on September 18, 1989 with five original compositions of the twelve tracks. "Nascimento" is a Harris composition which I am assuming is a tribute to Milton Nascimento, kicking the album off brilliantly. "The Bird of Red and Gold" features some more beautiful piano work as well as some nice singing by Barry.
Xanadu Records put out some great albums from some of the most distinguished, talented performers in jazz music, and Barry Harris is certainly among them. Whenever you see old Xanadu Records compact disc reissues grab them up, because they are becoming harder to come by and the old catalogue features some first-rate jazz albums and sessions. Not to be missed this one! A wonderful addition to your own jazz libraries with superior sound, anyone who is a fan of excellent solo jazz piano will surely enjoy this one.
