You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown [Cast Recording] [Soundtrack]

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
It's easy to see why You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown is so popular. With its simple set and small cast, it has become a staple of high-school drama and small-scale productions all over America. Of course, this doesn't necessarily translate into a grandiose Broadway show, but this Michael Mayer-directed production is enjoyable. Anthony Rapp (Rent) plays an effective Charlie and Ilana Levine's Lucy is fun. The lively "Snoopy" number (Roger Bart plays the canine's role) is the musical's highlight, but such tunes as "Beethoven Day" really date the musical. Some may find it simplistic; others will love it. Which probably makes it a lot like the "Peanuts" comic strip itself. --Jason Verlinde --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5 out of 5 stars Laugh-out-loud.......2007-04-03

Charles Schultz' beloved comic-strip characters come to life in this award-winning audience favorite. The revival is so delightful. The musical score is delightful. And the songs will definitely bring you lots of laughter. Kristin Chenoweth's character Sally Brown is most definitely the one to watch for. With her rendition of My New Philosophy alone, it's hardly surprising why she won the Tony for this role. Also loved the song Little Known Facts, I can't stop laughing when I first heard it. I admit I kinda winced the first time I heard Ilana Levine's voice. But it sorta grew on me I guess. And anyway, the more I think about it, her voice is appropriate for Lucy. Another favorite is Glee Club Rehearsal, the way they keep fighting over that pencil. And "What's an enigma?" Hahaha. Anthony Rapp and BD Wong also has funny moments. I especially like Charlie (Anthony Rapp) when he was singing The Doctor Is In. "Wait a minute, Snoopy likes me!" Lucy:"He only pretends to like you because you feed him." Poor Charlie! And Lucy's quite mean to Charlie. I also laughed at BD Wong because I'm used to seeing him in Law&Order:SVU.
Get a copy of this revival cast recording. It's really worth it. For your whole family. Hilarious and great musical score. One of the best family musicals.

What's the difference between the 1967 Original Broadway production of YAGMCB and the 1999 Revival?

The characters that is presented in the original stage production has been maintained, but a new perspective has been added. The new cast of six characters includes Charlie Brown, Linus, Lucy, Schroeder, Snoopy and Sally Brown (she replaces Patty.) The original twelve songs all remain in this version, and two new songs: Beethoven Day (Schroeder & Company) and My New Philosophy (Sally with Schroeder) have been added. Some of the underscoring music was also replaced (Lucy's Queen Lucy and Snoopy's Red Baron). The music and the dialogue has also been reworked.

5 out of 5 stars A Family Favorite.......2007-01-16

It's good music to listen to in the car. It's appropiate for everyone of every age. It also teaches children how to appreciate the arts, since it's based on a children's program that everyone knows and loves.

4 out of 5 stars Nostaglic .......2007-01-11

I saw a production of this great play in northern New Jersey last year and was struck by the introduction in the program that the story of "Peanuts" was written by an American WWII veteran who endured the tough winter of 19944-45 in Europe just as my Dad and a number of uncles did. Perhaps another perspective on these timeless stories of growing up and learning to be happy.

4 out of 5 stars A really cute show.......2006-08-05

This is a fantastic score, and though the original cast recording may be more authentic/true to the Peanuts cartoon, a clearer sound and a bigger orchestra does nothing but good for this CD. Anthony Rapp is a fantastic charlie brown and shows his distress perfectly. the song that was written for kristin chenoweth is laugh-out-loud funny and a great addition.
ilana lavine's voice is, i admit, little short of a screech, but it's only annoying because in the songs with the whole cast, you can tell she has a beautiful voice normally. for those who were complaining that her songs are unlistenable, it isn't that bad and it's part of lucy's character.
my favourite songs are 'you're a good man, charlie brown' and 'happiness'. they both have an underlying message that makes the CD worth listening to for adults as well as children. 'for happiness is anyone and anything at all that's loved by you...' how true is that? definitely buy either this or the off-broadway cast recording, but this CD has a more definite beat and rhythm and is wonderful to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Great Broadway show for families.......2006-07-14

As a long-time Broadway junkie, I've made it my mission to introduce my 2 young daughters to as many age-appropriate musicals as possible. Charlie Brown is fun with a basic, life-affirming message without being sugary and melodramatic. The multicultural casting on this version was a nice touch, and the cast vocals blend nicely as well as standing out on their own. It's no surprise that Kristin Chenoweth won the Tony for this performance-just listen to My New Philosophy and you'll see why. Great to hear Anthony Rapp apart from Rent, and BD Wong's My Blanket and Me is sweet and charming.

This is a good CD for anyone wishing to introduce their kids to Broadway. My girls and I sing to it in the car all the time! Due to the low overhead as far as sets and costumes are concerned, this show is performed frequently in community/regional theatres around the country. I highly recommend taking your kids to see it, and you'll enjoy it also.

This was fast and easy, and made my brother's surprise 50th party a hit! Thanks!

2 out of 5 stars I can see why they did it again........2007-03-01

I love this musical, but after hearing the revival version I lost all interest in this one. I think the revival captures the essence of more of the characters with more songs, and its faster pace keeps everything moving along better than this album. I'd stick with the revival.

5 out of 5 stars Innocent Charm.......2006-03-30

This is a musical that couldn't have been created today. Featuring little-known and very young performers (except perhaps for Gary Burghoff, who would go on to play Radar O'Reilly in M.A.S.H. on TV) the show was literally workshopped into existence by the actors from a bunch of songs written by Clark Gesner and endorsed by Charles M. Schulz, the creator of the comic strip. In fact, the credit given for "the book" (script) is a fictitious charcter whose name is made up of the cast members initials!

This recording captures the charm and innocence of 1967 and is a testament to just how much one can achieve with a very small band and high-energy performances. Sure, the quality of the recoding ain't that great, but this was done nearly 40 years ago, so give it a break!

The actors lovingly (and laughingly, in Lucy's case) bring the PEANUTS characters to life and the experience is quite magical. I actually saw this show in New York in 1967 (I was 6) and hearing the music again brings back a flood of memories from that time.

Highly recommended for fans of PEANUTS, musicals, workshopped theatre and sentimentalists everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars Good CD.......2006-03-11

I'm an accompianist and am working with a HighSchool Drama Department and their production of "You're a Good man Charlie Brown" This recording is excellent- and I would recommend it without any reservation because it closely follows the original script/orchestration. I do not recommend the 1999 CD version of the same play that was brought back to broadway. Too many "artistic liberties" were taken in it's recording, thus it is not even close to the original production. The simple feeling of the play is lost in the newer recording.

1 out of 5 stars Good songs.....but not the greatest recording.......2005-10-15

I was in this show and it was so much fun! The music is awesome! So after the show closed I went out and bought the soundtrack and I was not impressed at all. I realize that all of these adults are acting as kids, but I dont think that they even tried to make it sound good. And just like it says in the CD cover, Lucy's voice sounds like fingernails against a chalk-board: she fits right in. Overall I give this one star because the writing itself is good...but I would be downright embarassed if I was a part of this particular cast! I have never heard the original broadway cast recording, but just by listening to this, I can tell you one thing: buy the other recording!! Anything is better than this!!
