Blossom Dearie

That's her real name and this is her real voice, as fresh and sweet as the darling buds of May--but never cloying or precious. Fittingly, there's a bright, springtime theme running through this record, which includes "It Might as Well Be Spring," "A Fine Spring Morning," and the CD bonus track "They Say It's Spring." And since Ms. Dearie had recently returned from a few years in France in 1956 when she recorded this, her first U.S. album, there are also some chansons in zee language of love: "Comment Allez Vous," "Tout Doucement," and the aforementioned "It Might As Well Be Printemps." The only thing missing is "April in Paris." Dearie accompanies herself on piano, with Ray Brown (bass) and Jo Jones (drums)--and on some tracks a six-voice chorus. If Chet Baker and Betty Boop had a baby, she'd be Blossom Dearie--and this first-rate album catches her in the springtime of her career. --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars Best Blossom Album.......2007-04-14

Just what I said: best Blossom album. They're all great, but this one has that special sparkle to it that makes you want to listen to it over and over and over again. Her voice hugs these delicious standard and not-so-standard tunes. A true classic jazz vocal album. And do not forget she plays piano too!

5 out of 5 stars Love with a microphone.......2007-03-15

I hadn't discovered Blossom until the last few years. What a pleasure. One used to be able to fall in love with a sweet voice on a record. The current crop of young chanteuses just don't get it. Say what you want, this gal is for the guys. I think she is still performing. Miss Dearie, please come to Atlanta!

5 out of 5 stars Originality.......2006-06-30

I came across this cd because of another purchase and was informed that one of the songs from that cd was originally made by Blossom Dearie (Comment Allez-Vous) and I wanted to hear the original version and enjoyed it as well and ended up enjoying the entire cd. Now I'm a big fan.

5 out of 5 stars I Have Been Hooked Since I Was A Child............2006-03-13

I remember the first time I heard Blossom's voice. It was over 30 years ago, on a Saturday morning. It was love at first note.....She still makes me want to unpack my adjectives. Her voice is like fresh butter on hot bread.....It melts into every nook & cranny and is oh-so-good.

This CD is outstanding. Every song is well crafted and a delight to the senses. If you ike Blossom, this is an excellent addition to your collection. If you are unfamiliar with Blossom, this is a good way to start your collection.

Blossom's Blues alone, is worth the price of this CD.

Give this CD a try, you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars The French Connection.......2006-03-03

Blossom Dearie's voice is sweet and clear. But it is her singing in French that is what makes this disk so spectacular. There is no better antidote to the grimy snarl of waiting in city traffic than to close your windows and listen to her jazzy little ditties about guys and gals in love. The band members are jazz greats but the music is understated and provides a perfect setting to showcase her voice. The pictures she conjures up of percolating coffee pots, milkman on the doorstep, cozy bungaloes, birds in spring, and love lost and found will take you back in time to a much simpler world of smoky bistros and maybe a few beatnicks. listen to this with a cup of espresso and a croissant and make believe you left town.

This rare item in Blossom Dearie's catalog is, ironically, her most direct flirtation with making a "commercial" album. Less focused on the trademark simplicity of her piano-based arrangements, 1964's May I Come In? instead finds the singer fronting an orchestra in such then-trendy moves as a properly laidback take on Jobim's "Quiet Nights (Corcovado)" and the upbeat, Bacharach-esque treatment of "When Sunny Gets Blue." But Dearie's wistfulness and understated sexiness aren't harmed a bit; in fact, the opening cut, "Something Happens to Me," is an erotic gem. And "I'm Old Fashioned" is so perfect for her that the song might as well have been retired after she recorded it. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars A great Blossom Dearie w/ orchestra cd.......2005-02-25

This is a classic reissue of a former lp, and it features Miss Blossom Dearie sounding rather cheeful and uplifting 12 pop and jazz standards with teh help of Jack Marshall's orchestra. Dearing's litling and girlish voice is charming in the big band setting, making this a perfect cd for playing when having "lounge" parties.

4 out of 5 stars THIS IS ALBUM TO ENDEAR YOU TO MISS BLOSSOM.......2004-09-16

A friend introduced me to Blossom Dearie through this album. The serene blonde swathed in mink on the cover was one thing, but when I let her soft, sweet voice slip out of the album (yes, it was that long ago), my heart went "ping!" and that was the end of if for me.

I later chased her down in performance at The Ballroom in New York's Greenwich Village. She sang and glowed -- no, twinkled -- accompanying herself while reigning entirely over the room with respectable musicality. We talked a bit afterward, my being a doofus, and she signed something on paper for me which I hurried home and framed. There's just no other such thing as Blossom Dearie, and this is the album that proves it.

Enjoy the small, tight jazz orchestra. It is impeccably attuned to her style, to her individualized voice, to her talent. The arrangements are sweet and rhythmic and happy. The lyrics of many of the tunes she selected to perform are witty and provocative and stylish, very ahead of the ethos of 1964, the year it was recorded in Capitol Records' Studio A in Los Angeles. (That's the skyscraper designed to look like a stack of vinyl record platters. Should they rebuild for the CD age?)

Note the smoking sax section and how it punctuates many of Miss Blossom's melodies, and how she plays along on her piano almost undiscernably most of the time, emerging now and then like a sudden beam of light. Most distinctively, she creates through her scant 28 minutes of work here a blessed time capsule of jazz which -- for me -- is bewitching.

God bless you, Miss Blossom Dearie (and it is her real Scottish name)! And, wow!, what a talent! May I come in?

5 out of 5 stars Blossom does it again.......2002-10-22

Although I like Blossom with the piano, bass and drums, this post-Verve release from 1964 complete with orchestra fills out the sound more brilliantly. The opening number "Something Happens To Me" is infectious.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......1999-10-10

Blossom Dearie's charm comes through all of her music and this CD is a winner. Each song shows her wonderful taste for quality compositions with great lyrics. "Put on a Happy Face" is my personal favorite but every song is outstanding. This CD is a great introduction to an immensely talented yet highly underrated musician.

5 out of 5 stars Gentle Jazz.......2005-05-14

This collection of Blossom Dearie backed up by Ray Brown and company is simply delightful. It swings. No histrionics. No miserable Mitch Miller influence that derailed so many good female vocalists of the '50's. Just cool head bobbing good groovy music. Combining her "less is more" approach with Ray Brown, Ed Thigpen and Mundell Lowe shows that, once again, Norman Granz knew what he was doing. The rendition of Moonlight Saving Time is one of those tunes by Blossom that really frames the Blossom Touch. Of course, The Doodlin' Song will make a true jazz fan smile. Do not miss this music.

5 out of 5 stars Deceptively Simple, Sweet and Swinging..........2004-08-30

The comparisons to Dave Frishberg make good sense to me... and she's definitely one hip gal (Blossom Dearie was the lady answering King Pleasure in his famous recording of Moody's Mood for Love.) - - What's most amazing is that while lacking both the "operetics" of other aspiring Jazz vocalists and the improvisational venturousness of the bebop singers, she has something "else" which is hard to pinpoint... Cuteness ? Perhaps some, but then again she also has a way of phrasing, telling stories through the music and holding the listeners' attention... as a result, whereas the "cuteness" and "novelty" might wear off with other singers taking this approach, Blossom Dearie's style proves itself itself to have an eternally hip deepness that's easy to miss with just a quick listen and comparison.. in time one realizes beyond "cuteness" better words are "honesty" and "insight" to describe her playing... incidentally her piano playing ain't so bad either... (Check out her swinging solo on If I Were A Bell For Example....) the accompanyment of Eddie Thigpen and Ray Brown definitely doesn't hurt.... Ray Brown's bass solo over Eddie Thigpen's masterful brush drumming on Teach Me Tonight is worth the purchase of this CD 10 times over ! ! ! ...not to mention Mundell Lowe's presence and the ridiculously cute and silly Doop-Doo-De-Doop...

5 out of 5 stars This Blossom will never fade.......2002-11-30

Wonderful, witty and warm. Blossom Dearie is a national treasure and her late 50's - early 60's recordings for Verve make life worth living. There is no one like her in the world. Thank you for The Surrey With the Fringe On Top.

5 out of 5 stars Jazz in a gentler time.......2001-02-21

This is second only to 'Give Him the Ooh-la-la' in Blossom's Verve years. Blossom's voice is such a treat, and she really attacks a range of songs in this album. You've never heard Surrey with a Fringe on Top done like this. She adds a wonderful intro onto the beginning of 'Tea for Two'.

The one gripe I have with this album is that the overall tempo is just a touch slow.

5 out of 5 stars Blossom's just the best.......2006-04-30

I am a second generation Blossom Dearie fan. My mother used to play her albums (yeah, that does date me) while ironing just to make a drearie job fun. I remember her singing her heart out along with this lady with the little girl voice who sings about big girl subjects.

When Ms. Dearie sings "Somewone To Watch Over Me" I want to know that there really is someone to wath over her. She can go from there to the sassy "Always True to You In My Fashion" and to the sweetly sentimental "Once Upon a Summertme" without missing a beat (figuratively) and it works. I haven't heard a Blossom dearie recording that I didn't like, I just like some more than others and this is one of her best.

5 out of 5 stars I bought this cd on a whim not knowing Blossom and I love it!.......2005-11-21

I bought this cd when I went to purchase Ella Fitzgeralds Best of the Songbooks and was intrigued with Blossom Dearie's name (it's her REAL name) and the cd notes about her voice. I recognized several of my favorite romantic standards: 'Our Love Is Here To Stay' and 'Someone To Watch Over Me' which are wonderfully done. Then the hoping to find love just around the corner lyrics of 'I Walk A Little Faster,' the spend our lives together of 'Dance Only With Me' and the humble and lovestruck words of 'It Amazes Me' ("what he sees in me dazzles me, dazes me; nothing much phases me but to see me in his eyes it just amazes me.") The giddy 'They Say It's Spring' or the melancholy 'Once Upon a Summertime' are so sentimental. On the other hand, the whimsical 'I'm Hip,' 'Rhode Island Is Famous For You' ("peaches come from Georgia, lobsters come from Maine, spuds from Idaho, pencils from Pennsylvania, tents from Tentasee, you come from Rhode Island it's famous for you") and 'Blossom's Blues' make for great listening to or singing along with. Blossom has an unusual voice, like a little girl at times, she plays piano and is accompanied by a jazz ensemble on these recordings from the late 1950's. I wouldn't say I'm a lover of jazz vocalists but this cd falls into the martini lounge category. At age 45 I'm listening to so much old music that is far better than the junk played on the popular radio stations these days. Take a sentimental journey and understand every word Blossom Dearie sings on this delightful cd.

5 out of 5 stars Title Is Misleading.......2005-02-01

Blossom Dearie is not really a diva. She's more the Bob Newhart of jazz piano. I mean that in the best way possible.

5 out of 5 stars Like no-one else.......2006-07-18

At first listen, you might think of Blossom Dearie as a coy and girlish. But she's much more mature than that. She delivers each song with such detail and meaning that you can't help but listen. She is incredibly honest in her delivery, not hiding behind any preconceptions of what a singer "should" sound like. Blossom is all Blossom, and no pretense. She's also a masterful pianist, making it sound as if she's not working at all. Jazz Masters 51 is an excellent introduction to Blossom Dearie.

I've met Blossom Dearie in NYC. She's a complete sweetheart. She autographed my "Sings Comden and Green" CD (also excellent).

5 out of 5 stars This CD is so beautiful!!.......2006-03-31

I was introduced to Blossom Dearie with this CD and I'm completely hooked! Her voice is so clear and light. I love this CD.

4 out of 5 stars A late in life revelation, a major female vocalist........2005-09-16

Verve Jazz Masters 51, a collection of jazz and popular standards sung by Blossom Dearie accompanying herself on the piano has finally made a major impression on me as an important Jazz vocalist, something on the order of a distaff Mose Allison, without her doing the composing.

I first heard her name from an audiophile friend in the 1970s, when almost all audiophiles were Jazz fans. I was not without some affection for some pop female vocalists such as Barbra Streisand, who I 'discovered' upon the release of her first album. But, this was just after the crest of the great Rock explosion where female vocalist primarily meant Grace Slick, Janice Joplin, Mama Cass, and Sandy Denny.

Also, in the age of 'Jefferson Airplane', 'The Grateful Dead', 'Pink Floyd', and 'Led Zeppelin', one almost had to believe that the name Blossom Dearie was a stage name. But, I have come around to realize that all this was foolishness, and Blossom Dearie is a major and important Jazz vocal performer. The easiest way to appreciate what Blossom Dearie can do with a song is to listen to her rendition of the Gershwin's 'Someone to Watch Over Me'.

For this I'll trade in my library of blues recordings and my three copies of 'Stardust' done by other people to get more such performances.

My only problem with this recording is the same problem I have with most titles in this series. They are too short. A good classical CD can easily top 65 minutes, so I don't see why Verve can't squeeze more than 52 minutes onto this disk.

I have nothing to say to those of you who already know and appreciate Ms. Dearie. To those who come to this review from some of my other reviews, I recommend you give this woman a serious listen!

5 out of 5 stars One of A Kind Vocalist.......2005-04-06

There really is no other female vocalist even close to her. Delightful. Absolutly delightful. Arrangements and phrasing unparalled. You are there with her when she sings.

5 out of 5 stars Best find I've made in years!.......2005-04-03

I had not even heard her name when I picked up this CD a couple weeks ago while browsing in the Jazz section. I'm not a huge jazz fan, but have always enjoyed the occassional Billie Holiday and Ella. With a name like Blossom Dearie, and an endorsement by Dean Martin on a blurb on the CD sleeve, I thought 'what the heck?' What a complete delight this CD is - every song is wonderful. From the very first song, I was mesmorized, delighted and enchanted. My kids, 8 and 10 have come to love it too! Picture my 8 year old daughter walking around signing 'Give him the ooh-la-la!' - sure beats Britney!

5 out of 5 stars A Beauty! This Little Jazz Bird is one of a kind!.......2007-06-16

If you already are a fan of hers, than I promise you, this one is a no brainer. For those of you who enjoy such great jazz vocalists as Ella, Sarah, Billie, Carmen, Anita, Dinah, et al... then make room on your CD or record shelf for Blossom Dearie. Her voice is so unique, so appealing, so tranquil, it's the perfect music to listen to on a peaceful Sunday morning or perhaps in the late evening when the sun is going down and you've got your worries set aside for the day. And if you can't set aside all of the stress and strain of daily life, than this album, could be your remedy.

Blossom is not only known for her lovely, one-of-a-kind voice, but she also plays the piano beautifully as well, something in which she takes great pride in. According to Ms. Dearie, "...it's my piano that the musicians - the In group - like", and while that may be true, there is no denying how truly beguiling that voice of hers is. Whether she lilts in English or French it's all good folks!

The legendary Ray Brown (bass), Bobby Thigpen (drums) and Kenny Burrell (guitar) accompany Blossom on this one, and as always, they don't disappoint. Also, Bobby Jaspar (flute) joins in on the three songs she sings in French and really adds that extra kick, making them all the more enjoyable. I especially enjoyed his performance on the song "Boum". There is not one song on this CD that is a let down. My personal favorites are "Hello Love", "Gentleman Friend", "Boum", "Someone To Watch Over Me", ah hell, what am I talking about, all the songs are great!

I can't recommend this one enough!

5 out of 5 stars Finally! Another Long Vaulted Treasure Re-Emerges.......2003-09-25

This is one of the last two Verve recordings by Blossom Dearie that have been lanquishing in the Verve vaults for way too long, and it's so good to see that it is once again available!! This is the most intimate album that Blossom recorded during her Verve years. The stand-out track on the recording is definitely 'Someone to Watch Over Me' which Blossom approaches as if she is writing the very words into her diary or whispering them into a prayer locket. Other outstanding songs are 'You Fascinate Me So', 'It's Too Good to Talk About Now', and 'You've Got Something I Want'. Now the good people at Verve need only release "Soubrette Sings Hit Broadway Songs" (and any miscellaneous alternate takes and studio chatter they might have lying around in the vaults) and Ms. Blossom's Verve years will all be available.

Blossom Dearie's second Verve album appears on CD for the first time here. This September 1957 quartet date with guitarist Herb Ellis, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Jo Jones puts Dearie front and center on a selection of 12 tunes cannily designed to put across both her innate musicality and a winningly innocent sexuality, which peaks on the Cole Porter title track. Also completely winning are versions of songs as well known as "Just One of Those Things" and "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" and as obscure as "Bang Goes the Drum (And You're in Love)." --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars It will resonate with your heart.......2004-03-16

Why I bought this album:
I first heard the song "Try your Wings" from the movie "My Life without Me" (great movie by the way)

I liked the song so much, I bought ~$800 of speakers so i could do her voice justice.

(just listen to the 30sec sample when it's 2am in the morning after 2 glass of Merlot, you will probably agree)

The rest of songs are pretty good too.

I have no idea why she is not well-known as Ella or Diana Krall.

4 out of 5 stars A good one.......2000-09-19

A female jazz singer friend of mine claimed that every fan she knew of Blossom Dearie was a man. I can see how Dearie's winsome kewpie-doll voice might have a particular attraction for the opposite sex; yet in my experience just about anyone, of either sex, can get hooked on her work. This is a good album, if not quite Dearie's best: _Once Upon a Summertime_ is the better disc, with its classic renditions of ballads like "Manhattan"; yet this disc, despite the sprinkling of novelty numbers & its lighter (indeed, often frisky) feel, is also worth a listen. "Just One of Those Things" is an excellent uptempo rendition, showcasing Dearie's good sense of swing, & there's many worthwhile resuscitations of little-known tunes like "I Walk a Little Faster" & "Let Me Love You". I'm a little less keen on the French-themed tunes like the title track or "The Riviera", with their rather brittle wit; yet "Plus Je T'Embrasse" is charming. -- Jazz singing, like jazz playing, has never been about just technique--Dearie, like Billie Holiday or Helen Merrill or Mose Allison, shows how intrinsic intelligence, emotional nuance & musicality can beat out stellar pipes anytime.

5 out of 5 stars Ooh la la-la-la.......2000-02-26

Its a delight to hear Ms. Dearie's coy babydoll delivery of standards that are usually associated with Dinah Washington's brass or Eartha Kitts come-hither growl. How can such a smart cookie still be so audibly blonde?

5 out of 5 stars Simply irresistible.......1999-12-26

An excellent easy-listening jazz album performed by a unique singer. Her high-pitched, sweet and half-naive, half-spicy vocals, as well as the spare piano-based arrangements exquisitely enhance an original repertoire which is in general quite far from "the same as usual" standards. Blossom conveys a great tenderness in ballads as "Try you're wings" or "They say it's spring" and swings extremely well in songs as "Between the devil and the deep blue sea" or the title track. And she can also be so sexy in the cabaret-ish, French-language "Plus je t'embrasse", one of my favourite tracks. Charming!

4 out of 5 stars A must have for any Blossom Dearie fan.......1998-09-23

Many songs here highlight Miss Dearie's unique voice and character. You can't help smiling as you listen to this cd. Then again, any Blossom Dearie cd will do that to you. Original liner notes accompany the collection.

5 out of 5 stars Too Good For the Average Man.......2006-11-20

What do you mean, you've never heard of Blossom Dearie? Shame on you!

Love Broadway? Love Jazz? Order this today. "Blossom Dearie: Soubrette" is my favorite of her many recordings. The songs collected here are not your usual Broadway fare. No, these tunes are character songs, novelty song ususally sung by the second female lead or soubrette.

The greatest Broadway composers are represented to great effect: Rodgers & Hart with "Too Good for the Average Man" and (especially) "To Keep My Love Alive," Porter's "Always True To You in My Fashion," Loesser's title tune from "Guys and Dolls," and two incomparable numbers from Schwartz and Dietz, "Confession" from "The Band Wagon," and the unforgettable "Rhode Island is Famous for You."

This is simply a joyous recording. It's hard, if not impossible, to listen to this recording without at least a smile on your face. This is one that should not be missed [I know I say that alot - but I mean it]. Order this, you be glad you did. And remember, I told you to.

4 out of 5 stars Not flawless, but VERY good!.......2006-09-15

Ok, it is always a matter of taste. This may be not a typical B. Dearie album, wich means, you will not find a Jazz Combo. Those who are jazz buffs should start by somewhere else. But for those who enjoy traditional vocal Pop, will find these recordings very rewarding. The arrangements are a little contained, but very well designed by the master Russ Garcia, who respected the "light" voice of the performer, giving a non-obstructive orchestral dressing, in other words, lots of vibraphone and woodwinds. It sounds very nice. Plus, aside of the overrercorded songs like " Guys and Dolls", you will find some other tunes that are almost rare like Porter's "The Physician" and Rodger's "Too Good For..." . And even if you say "not her best" due to the bright of other recordings of her, it deserves at least four stars for its contents.

2 out of 5 stars Not Blossom's best........2004-11-01

I believe this is the last of Blossom's Verve canon to be reissued, and you can see why they held on to it for so long. I had this on my wish list when it was only available as a Japanese import in the $30 range, and am so glad I waited to get it on ebay for $5. It's really not up to Blossom's usual impeccable standard. Blossom is always at her best in a jazz combo setting, but when working in the orchestral setting of Capital's MAY I COME IN?, she did a nice job. Of course, that was with Jack Marshall's excellent arrangements and a hip selection of songs. This reissue, unfortunately, suffers from some truly dreadful Russ Garcia arrangements that accentuate Blossom's penchant for coyness. Songs like "Love is the Reason," "To Keep My Love Alive," and "Confession" are irremediably marred by corny/tacky arrangements. (To hear what a great song the little known Schwartz-Dietz "Confession" really is, listen to Judy Holliday's version on TROUBLE IS A MAN). Blossom fares far better on more jazz-oriented arrangements like "The Gentleman is a Dope" and "Rhode Island is Famous for You," but those are very much in the minority. The only other thing that ameliorates the downside of this album is the fact that Blossom clearly chose songs that show some of Broadway's legendary lyricists at their wittiest. Lorenz Hart's "To Keep My Love Alive," Cole Porter's "The Physician," Dorothy Field's "Love is the Reason," Yip Harburg's "Napoleon," and Howard Dietz's aforesaid "Rhode Island" are full of sparkling with of the "they don't write songs like that anymore" variety. But, overall, this is strictly an album for Blossom completists only. The only song that is a must for Blossomphiles is "Rhode Island" and that's available on one of Verve's Blossom compilations where you get some really good stuff along with it.

5 out of 5 stars From BlossomDearie.com.......2004-10-02

This has been a frequently requested album over the years. Favorite songs like "Rhode Island Is Famous For You", which is identified with Blossom more so than the broadway show it came from make it a real treat. From Verve Records to Daffodil Records it's always hard to pick a "best" album, Blossom Dearie is just so good!

5 out of 5 stars Cabaret /jazz special.......2006-08-09

This warm and highly professional performance reaches heights of delight difficult to describe. Blossom Dearie's musicality, exquisite timing and sheer magic provide a concert of unsurpassable delicacy, joy, tinged always with humour drawn from wry observation.

Not to be missed.

4 out of 5 stars Blossom is a hoot!.......2005-09-14

The word "iconoclast" was invented for Blossom Dearie, a performer who doesn't quite fit into any category. Not only is she a gas, she chooses some smart and funny songwriters. This CD, from her own Daffodil label, is a combination of live and studio material, the live being better and funnier in my opinion. (Much of the studio stuff is an attempt at campy fun that doesn't always quite come off.) Some highlights include "I'm Hip," "Bruce," "The Ballad of the Shape of Things To Come," "My Attorney Bernie," "I'm Shadowing You," "Answering Machine," and her anthem song, "Peel Me A Grape." Blossom has an affinity for the smart and sophisticated (yet very silly) songs of Sheldon Harnick and Dave Frishberg, and they make the most amusing material in the collection. Why these two aren't better-known is a mystery to me.

Most of these were recorded with an aging Blossom at the piano, playing to a very small and intimate audience. She's charming, eccentric, and wry. There's no one quite like BD today, and that's sad. Grab this CD, skip past the occasional dud, and enjoy some really good belly laughs.

4 out of 5 stars good but LIVE.......2002-05-27

This is a very good collection but there are a few more "novelty" songs than a romantic like I might like. Buyers should be aware that many of the tracks are "live" recordings meaning that they have annoying applause after the songs. I hate that, although this CD does give one the feeling of being at a Blossom concert.

5 out of 5 stars Get this CD!.......2000-08-28

This CD is an anthology of fifteen songs taken from Blossom's own label, Daffodil Records. It is an assemblage of some of her best work. My personal favorite is "Bring All Your Love Along," which she recorded with Bob Dorough. At the present time this song can be found on no other Blossom Dearie CD. Although some of the material can now be found on other BD discs, there is a sufficient number of songs found nowhere else to make this pressing an important part of your collection. To be honest, on any of Blossom's recordings there are some songs I like better than others. This one contains the cream of the crop from start to finish.

Blossom Dearie was 32 when she recorded this album in 1959. But there's always been something of a little girl's artlessness in her singing, which somehow radiates great sophistication. That peculiar mix sets her apart from other '50s singers who also favored a cool, minimally inflected delivery, like Julie London or June Christy. Singing or quietly accompanying herself on piano, Dearie makes less do more, rather like her fan Miles Davis. The band--guitarist Kenny Burrell, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Ed Thigpen--lays low, discreet. The songs, featuring urbane lyrics by Adolph Comden and Betty Green, are drawn from shows and films such as On the Town, Bells Are Ringing, and It's Always Fair Weather, with music by (respectively) Leonard Bernstein, Jule Styne, and André Previn. Not all selections are as strong as the standards (and standouts) "Just in Time," (an unexpectedly jaunty) "The Party's Over," and the bittersweet masterpiece "Some Other Time," but Dearie's low-key charm carries the day. --Kevin Whitehead

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful mood setter.......2003-01-13

I had never heard of Blossom Dearie until a good friend recommended her to me. I've listened to this CD numerous times and enjoy it more with each sitting. From her wistful, "The Party's Over," to the more upbeat "Just in Time," Dearie is nothing but captivating. Her backing members, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Ray Brown on bass, and Ed Thigpen on drums bring to mind a dark, smoky jazz club in 1950's Manhattan. Serve me another scotch and spin the CD again.

5 out of 5 stars A classic album by a genuine American treasure!!.......2002-06-25

Blossom Dearie brings a special kind of magic to every song that is lucky enough to be touched by her unique gift. Her impeccable phrasing and that warm sweet voice make her essential to any music collection. This CD is certainly no exception. Pulling together 10 songs by the great writing team of Betty Comden and Adolph Green, who coincidentally wrote the screen play to my favorite film - Auntie Mame, she makes each song her own and makes you feel that she is singing to you personally. This edition has been professionally remastered and though I am partial to vinyl records, it sounds great and the packaging is excellent as well. When this record was completed in 1959 Ms. Comden and Mr. Green were asked to appear on the cover with Blossom. She brought along a copy of the finished recording to Ms. Comden's apartment for the photo shoot and upon hearing the record, Ms. Comden and Mr. Green wrote an enthusiastic set of liner notes for the back cover! Treat yourself to this cd and prepare to be dazzled, it's like having a cabaret in your living room!!

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps her best!.......2002-05-27

I am a big BD fan and have almost all of her albums. I never tire of her beautifully simple, restrained and modern voice or stying. This is probably one of the top two or three of her recordings. The songs are all first rate and she sings them with originality and respect. A must for anyone who loves cabaret singing.
