Judy At Carnegie Hall: Fortieth Anniversary Edition [Original recording remastered]

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
The late 1950s were tough on Judy Garland, but this live recording, cut on April 23, 1961, at Carnegie Hall, would (rightfully) bring the legendary icon back into the spotlight. Live would go on to win five Grammys, be Garland's bestselling record, and confirm that, yes, on certain levels, she still had it. Her vocals are as strong as ever on these tunes, and Garland has fun with an audience obviously enraptured by her charms. She's self-deprecating where necessary--on "You Go to My Head" she "forgets" the lyrics but pretends to improvise. Mostly she just shines, especially on tunes she made famous, such as "Come Rain or Come Shine," "Stormy Weather," and "Over the Rainbow." This is easily one of pop music's greatest live recordings and a fine testament to Garland's recorded legacy. This two-CD set has been remastered for EMI's 40th-anniversary reissue to coincide with the ABC film based on daughter Lorna Luft's memoir Me and My Shadows (and is also available in a 24-karat-gold audiophile format released in 2000). --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars She died at 47... she could easily have won 47 stars for this:-).......2007-07-09

THIS IS JUDY GARLAND at her best. It was the first cd I bought on March 30 1988(not all songs included however) and it has never been far from my reach... In 1992 I finally got the two-disc album and now own the complete concert... mmmmmmmmmmmmmm:-))))

I have yet to come over a person who is indifferent to this recording. It is as if God himself smiled down on Frances Ethel turned Judy and gave her and US the greatest live recording ever made....

In 2005 I saw Liza Minnelli in Oslo(3d row) and I was hysterical... She gladly acknowledged me and introduced Bill LaVorgnia who turned out to be Judy`s drummer that night in 1961. She said something like this:

"Mama, the drum section is truly great tonight. Judy: Yes, do you see the drummer?...Yes I do... Judy: Well, give him his slippers(as I have been asked to do by Mama) and we`ll keep him in the family. And I ALWAYS DID WHAT MY MAMA TOLD ME TO DO!"

I yelled and clapped and she looked at me and asked "Oh - you got the album??" I shouted a great "YES" and she smiled that incredeable smile of hers to me... Later that evening we met and we were photographed together(you can see us in my profile) and she signed a paper from my hand - "Love Liza"...

TWO SHOW BUSINESS GREATS........ I think Judy and the Master himself smiled down at ME that night and gave ME a Carnegie Hall experience, cause Liza is getting BETTER AND BETTER as well:-)

5 out of 5 stars A Classic performer and incredible woman!.......2007-07-03

This concert is so much fun to listen to and sing along to. Judy Garland was a one of a kind woman and performer. She pours every ounce of passion and love into every song. No wonder she is still so much loved.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-06-26

I thought a few minutes about a title for this review. And it's the 1st time I felt a need to write one for Amazon. I read a few of the reviews and most of them say that this recording is a must have for Garland fans. To narrow a description. It's a must have for ANY lover of music. I grew up listening to rock in it's heyday. Fresh Cream was my 1st album. And on from there.
This is simply the finest performance by an artist that I have ever heard. The emotion that flows in both directions, from Judy to the audience and back, between the band and singer, and Judy and her soul is .... what? you can't pick an adjective the fits. If you can listen to her sing"Somewhere over the Rainbow" and not fell the passion, the pain, and not get a tear in you're eye, then pass on this and go get Carrie Underwood.

2 out of 5 stars Not as exciting as I thought it whould be........2007-04-12

This recording made live at Carnegie Hall is just not as exciting as I thought it would be. It's great material. Judy is at the height of her powers. The band is outstanding. The audience adores her. And yet....

We do have the studio recordings and some other live recordings.

Our Judy is eternal!

5 out of 5 stars One of the great show business nights of all time .......2007-03-25

'Wikipedia' says that this is considered by many to be the Greatest Show Business Night of all time. Anne Edwards in her biography of Garland gives an almost song- by- song account of the night. The overwhelming love of the audience to Judy Garland was returned in her giving everything she had. Her greatest numbers were performed on this night, and her voice was at her best.
Garland is not simply a great singer because of the distinctive quality of her voice but also because of the unique power of emotion, of true feeling he conveys.
This is a classic performance at the highest level.
