I rented the VHS version of this musical from the video store a long time ago and fell in love with the music and the songs when i first seen it. so naturally i had to go ouot and find the CD. but they only had it on special order. so i ordered it and i have been in love with it ever since. I love the music cause it reflects my mood in diffrent aspects. I listen to it whenever i get the chance and a whole flood of emotions run thru me whenever i hear certain phrases. Now that they finally got the remastered version out i had to order it right away. i had heard one of the bonus tracks (Sunday) on a cassette i had and i loved it. it is a good rendition of the song. the other Bonus Track (putting it together) i have heard the Carol Burnette Version on TV and it was a awesome combining of lyrics. so this is a beautifukl addition to the soundtrack.This is what made me fall in love with Stephen Sondheim and his music. Cause he knows hwo to write for people and how to touch ate youor emotions. Sunday in the Park with George is a awesome CD and I highly reccommend it to anyone who loves a good Sondheim show. Bernadette peters and Mandy Patinkin are brillent and deserve the praise once again since this woerful music has been reissued for a new generation to hear. Enjoy this CD and fall in love with the music once again....

Top Heavy Sondheim.......2007-04-16

"Sunday" was the first of Sondheim's attempts to trip himself up by creating an amazing first act out of town then challenging himself to paint his way out of the corner he'd trapped himself in. (Kelsey Grammer was George at La Jolla when it was a one-act.) Sondheim didn't completely succeed here; he came closer with "Into the Woods". The second act George is no match for the first, so neither is the musical's. I saw it twice, with one of the leads each time but their replacements in the other role; and an ideal production would have been the replacements playing the second act. Mandy P. had too much weight for the second George and Bernadette P. was a Carol Burnett sketch as the old lady. Her voice is too raw for the difficult material, though she is always very, very game.

The remaster sounds brilliant. The bonus material is not very interesting. Hearing a cut of Grammer would have been.

Sondheim Is Genius.......2006-03-20

My first exposure to Sondheim was "Into the Woods". Perfection. Then "Passion". A change, but still moving. Next was "Sweeney Todd". WOW, WOW, WOW. Could anything be these? Yes! "Sunday in the Park With George" may not have the best music, the most memorable songs, or be the most easy to listen to, but the whole concept makes it stand alone. This is probably Sondheim's most personal recording, and it shows, not through the gut-wrenching "We Do Not Belong Together" and "Move On", but through the artistic numbers like "Color and Light", "Finishing the Hat", "Children and Art", and, especially, "Putting It Together". The show is about the pains of creating a piece of art, such as a painting or a musical, and how the public's perception of the finished product can be skewed. This is an entirely artistic work, so those used to a more easy to follow story may not like this one as much as his others.

Aside from all that, this recording also shines with two extrodinary leads in Mandy Patinkin and the amazing Bernadette Peters. Mandy Patinkin is always great, and his performances in "Color in Light", "Finishing the Hat", and "Putting It Together" really show what the show is all about. It's Bernadette Peters, however, who steals this recording. From the great opener "Sunday in the Park With George" to the moving "Move On", she's flawless. Her comedic talent shows through in the opener, but her gem on this recording "We Do Not Belong Together", perfectly captures her emotional range. She's probably the most emotional singer I've heard, and that's why I love her. You can actually HEAR her tears!!! It's amazing.

In all, this may not have been Sondheim's most successful work, but due to it being so personal and artistic, it's definitely the best.

I love this music although at first I foung George to be rather crazy: singing about dogs, red, beer, blue, yellow, white and finishing the hat. I am firsthand experiencing the magic of this wonderful music as Louise in 'Sunday in the Park' at Smithtown Theater. Come and see it....

Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Great CD.......2006-08-06

This is a wonderful double CD of fabulous musical numbers performed by theatre greats and directed by a legandary musical director.

Simply the Best.......2005-06-29

First, to the person who criticizes the recording b/c of "Broadway Baby." Daisy Egan (who sings in in this recording) sounds like she's 10 becuase she IS young. She had just appeared on Braodway in Secret Garden and won a Tony for it. It's a joke...Broadway BABY...hello, it's a joke.

In a compilation of songs like this you're always going to have tracks that you prefer over others, but the majority of the renditions in this CD are great. This is simply one of the best collections of Sondheim out there. You get interpretations that span from "classical" (Green Finch), to bordering on insane (Anything Twice). This is to demonstrate how versatile this composer really is.

In my opinion, some of the best renditions are "Not a Day Goes By," "Anyone Can Whistle", "Girls Upstairs Medley," "Losing My Mind/Drive a Person Crazy," and "Weekend inthe Country." Makes me wish I had been there to witness it first hand.

If you love Sondheim and enjoy hearing Broadway performers, get this CD. A great recording.

Inconsistent, but mostly excellent.......2004-03-21

I am sure no knowledgeable person would deny how absolutely perfect all these songs are. However, the performances on this album are extremely inconsistent. It will go from an excellent rendition (Waiting for the Girls medley, Sunday, With So Little To Be Sure Of, Sooner or Later, Green Finch, Send in the Clowns, Pretty Lady) to the weird (I never Do Anything Twice), to the bad (Broadway Baby, Our Time). I still have absolutely no idea how they managed to butcher one of the best songs ever written--Good Thing Going--and turn it into smooth jazz elevator music. Why would they give Broadway Baby to someone who sounds like she's 10? That said, Liza Minelli, Glenn Close, Karen Ziemba, Dorothy Laudon and the "Waiting for the Girls" performers are all very good. And ending with Bernadette Peters and "Sunday" ends the set on a absolutley fabulous note.

I have been a major Sondheim fan for quite some time, and I finally obtained a copy of this album. I was blown away by the excellent cast and phenomenal selection of music. It is obvious how much work went into this production, considering that this is the live recording of a one time show, and it's flawless. The songs cover all of his shows with the exception of "Passion," which was released 3 years after this show. Also, the shows for which he wrote only lyrics are ommited, like West Side Story, Gypsy, etc. Thus, you can find material from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Anyone can Whistle, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Pacific Overtures, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Merrily we Roll Along, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, and Assassins.

There are two striking things about this CD (besides the music and performers themselves). First of all, some of the songs are completely stylistically reworked. The most obvious are "Good Thing Going" and "I Never do Anything Twice." Both are traditionally very ballady with a piano accompaniment, but here they have been redone as jazzy tunes. The result is excellent. Such reworkings demonstrate that Sondheim writes music for virtually any style, and in these cases, across several styles. It's a great example of his variety. The other interesting thing is how many songs have overlapping melodies of songs from different shows. Case in point, "Our Time" and "No one is Alone" are sung seperately by the Harlem Boys Choir and Betty Buckley (the original Grizabella in Webber's atrocious "CATS," although Buckley was excellent) respectively, and then combined. Putting these two songs together offer different meanings to each, and the music is only enhanced. Another example, the trio of "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs," "Love, I Hear," and "Live Alone and Like It" are sung in that order, and then the latter two are combined. Again, the meanings of the songs change, this time in an almost narrative style, and offering different takes on love in the same montage. Lastly (at least for this review, there are more), Dorothy Laudon's (the original Ms. Hannigan in Annie) combination of "Losing my Mind" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" is brilliant. Those who are familiar with these songs will wonder how exactly they fit, but trust me, they do. She swtiches back and forth between melodies to create a number that starts poignant and beautiful, and soon moves to become uproariously funny. Both the song reworkings and overlapping melodies of unrelated songs are all for the better.

I recommend this recording to anyone wanting to get better acquainted with some of Sondheim's best work, or those already familiar who want to hear a tour de force of phenomenal music. It has been said that Sondheim is a masterful lyricist (which he is), but lacks real talent for music. This CD is the final proof that such critics are wrong. His music may take a few listenings to get into, contrary to Webber or Wildhorn, but unlike those two, he doesn't cater to the audience. He challenges them to think outside of traditional musical theater in a glorious repertoise of shows that reach for a smarter, more sophisticated form.

A maginificent evening, a magnificent album.......2001-12-16

There's something to be said for the first concert you ever see at Carnegie Hall. I was fortunate enough to have this be my first. This entire evening was devoted to his genius and the performers did not disappoint.

This wonderful double CD shows off the best and brightest of the musical theatre composer and it is, as one person put it, "an embarassment of riches." Wonderful songs.......2003-02-07

If you're a Sondheim ballad fan, this a must-have. While there are a few renditions that aren't great (Not a Day Goes By is way overdone), the selections from Follies sung by Barbara Cook are outstanding. The Cleo Laine version of "Send in the Clowns" is lovely and Stephen Collins does an amazing good job on "Sorry-Grateful" from Company. Still, it's the Follies songs that truly shine!

One of Stephen Sondheim's most beautiful and most misunderstood scores, Sunday in the Park with George received a rare revival, and an even rarer recording with this 2006 London cast recording, which originated as a late-2005 production by the Menier Chocolate Factory just south of London. Both a fictional representation of French Impressionist painter Georges Seurat and an examination of the process of artistic creation, Sunday was for years the only Sondheim show available in only one recording. And why not, considering the original Broadway cast helped Sondheim and James Lapine develop the show in workshop, and the fact that it was recorded on video only enforced its permanence. And its leads, Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters, both nominated for Tonys, have long had an affinity for Sondheim's music. The 2006 London revival, however, holds up to the challenge extremely well, with stars Daniel Evans and Jenna Russell and the rest of the ensemble capturing the beauty, intricacy, and humor of Sondheim's music. Evans and Russell fall a bit short in certain dramatic and comedic moments, and their accents are a bit distracting when portraying the French and American characters. But even if the original Broadway cast will always be definitive, this is an excellent recording that only enforces our appreciation of the show. The 89-minute, two-disc set also benefits from having more music than the OBC (though not, of course, the DVD), including a bonus track: a longer version of "The One on the Left," with the two soldiers and the two Celestes. As a record of by far the best production of this wonderful Sondheim show that I have seen, this is great. As a stand-alone record of the music, I'm afraid it's no match for the original New York cast recording. On stage, Daniel Evans really gives depth and humanity to the two rather unlikeable Georges and stops Act 2 becoming the anticlimax it can sometimes seem. His voice, though, doesn't have the strength, the range of colour, the breath control or the power of Mandy Patinkin. Too often one finds oneself wanting those sustained notes that Sondheim lays above his pointilliste orchestration held for longer, both by Evans and by the Dot of Jenna Russell. This is especially true of the two big emotional numbers, We Do Not Belong Together and Move On. And the emotionally crunching big descant on 'And the light' in the latter song, so powerful in Patinkin's slightly weird ultra-high tenor, goes for relatively little here.

The orchestration, too, feels a little thin compared to the New York recording. The small band worked well in the confined spaces of the Chocolate Factory, but already felt a bit light in the West End and seems even more so on disc. Most importantly, the distinct colour - the 'tinta', if you like - that Sondheim gives this score is provided by the French Horn (suggested by the bugler in the painting). There wasn't one in the theatre where the part was mostly played by a saxophone. Here it crops up occasionally, but sounds very much as if it's played from the keyboards.

For the rest of the cast, it is predictably a bit swings and roundabouts. Simon Green's Jules is excellent as is his wife. Jenna Russell's Dot is fine up to a point, but I remain unconvinced by the Northern accent. Bernadette Peters American seems less intrusive and her singing is more intense, more characterful. The one outstanding actor/singer here is Gay Soper who makes George's Mother's number, Beautiful, a revelation - intensely moving and an even more successful point of rest before the great Act 1 Finale.

On the plus side, this recording includes more dialogue than the Original Cast disc, giving one a better idea of the plot. And, of course, Sondheim's score is still one of his finest. The move through dissonant chords to consonant harmony as George says 'harmony' may sound literal, but it works. So too the use of pointilliste riffs and ostinati to reflect George's unique painting technique. And the sequence of songs from Finishing the Hat through We Do Not Belong Together and Beautiful to the magical final assembly of the elements of the painting in Sunday is unaccountably overwhelming. That's what makes Sondheim and this show so special.

This is a fine memento of a great production of Sunday in the Park. But the Original Cast album still remains the first choice.

'Sunday in the Park' becomes smaller, cooler, less involving.......2007-01-17

This is miniaturized Sondheim, delivered with British coolness. Sunday in the Park with George was already scored for chamber orchestra, so I'm not sure it has benefitted by going even more on the skinny. A single violin and a couple of winds doesn't capture the composer's thrilling shifts into the major when George rhapsodizes about color, design, and HARMONY. Jenna Russell, who sings the part of Dot, Seurat's lover, has listened to Bernadette Peters in the role and delivers the compliment of imitating her. Usually that would be fatal, but Russell's mimicry of a great performance brings more life than does the flat-footed, prim rendition of George that we get from Daniel Evans. He's hardly passionate or visionary, two qualities Mandy Patinkin brought to the premiere.

Add to these deficits a music director who merely runs thourgh the score, and about all that's left is the virtue of completion. This revival offers more music than the original cast album. If that's of importance to you, the better course is to buy the DVD of the original version, whose visual wit is half the fun.

thrilling new "Sunday".......2006-11-22

This is the cast album to the acclaimed 2005 Menier Chocolate Factory production of Sondheim's SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE, and features a highly-talented cast bringing back to thrilling life one of Sondheim's most personal works, the tale of a man who cannot give himself totally to the woman he loves because of a commitment to art. The original Menier production was widely-acclaimed and transferred to London's West End this year.

The story takes what little is known of the life of Parisian artist Georges Seurat and weaves it into a story of life, loss and coming to know yourself. The first act follows George (played by Daniel Evans) as he paints the legendary "Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte". His mistress and model Dot (Jenna Russell) attempts to pursue a relationship with George that goes beyond art. She is rejected and leaves for America with another man (and George's baby).

The second act of the show opens with George's great-grandson (again played by Evans), who's an artist struggling with his own inspiration. Dot's daughter Marie (also played by Russell) gently guides his hand, but it's only when George returns to the scene of his great-grandfather's masterwork that the past comes to reconcile with the future.

Of all Stephen Sondheim's scores, SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE is one of the most rewarding. Just as the story follows painter Georges Seurat as he paints the masterpiece "Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte", so too the music takes on the fragmented quality that reflects the frenetic, pointillism style of painting which Seurat pioneered.

Daniel Evans gives a fresh youth and vitality to George. For all those who were left cold by Mandy Patinkin (the role's originator on Broadway in 1984) with all his mannerisms and odd vocal techniques, having the role sung so pristinely and straight-forward is a real plus.

A lot of people have been quite unfair to Jenna Russell, playing the dual roles of Dot and Marie. It must be noted that at the time of this recording, Russell had not yet performed these roles onstage (she was a replacement for Anna-Jane Casey who had starred in the original Menier run), so she must be forgiven for having a lesser grasp on the material. Nevertheless, in the first act, she's a dynamic and feisty force as Dot, particularly "Everybody Loves Louis" and the wrenching "We Do Not Belong Together". For the role of Marie, Russell adopts a lilting Southern accent which works very well.

The supporting cast is first-rate; in particular Gay Soper shines as George's senile mother, and Liza Sadovy is a revelation playing the repressed Yvonne. The orchestrations are crisp and clean, further enhancing the pointillism motif that runs throughout the score.

Sunday in the Park CD.......2006-08-31

We just saw the production in London and had the opportunity to meet Jenna Russell and Daniel Evans. Their performances on the 2 CD set really capture the color and emotion that they brought to the stage. It has all the complexity that is typically Sondheim but Evans and Russell are superb as is the rest of the cast. We couldn't imagine Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters being any better. Their British accents add to the flavor, and the orchestration is brilliant. If you like Sondheim or this show, this 2 CD set is well worth the investment.

Great Recording and Impresive Orchestral Reduction.......2006-08-30

I must say that this recording of Sunday in the Park with George ranks with the original cast album. Although, Mr. Evans and Ms. Russel do not surpass Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters, they are fine performers and perform their parts well. The featured players are also excellent and rank with their originators.
This cast album is two discs and includes more music than the original cast album. That's also a nice plus.
What impressed me most about the album is the stunning reduction of the orchestrations. I believe the original orchestra of Sunday in the Park with George had 12-14 musicians in the pit. That number has been reduced to a reed player, a violinist, a celloist and two keyboard players. The orchestra sounds as beautiful as the large one does and is quite nice.
So, although the original cast album is wonderful, this album is fine and recommended.

Barbara Cook is one of today's most accomplished song stylists, and if you don't believe us, just listen to this live album. It's a master class in the art of singing. It documents an evening at Carnegie Hall during which Cook proved that she can dissect and extract the substance out of the simplest of lyrics. One of the best surprises is "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" (from Company), which is taken at an amiable trot and allows the singer to display its humor. Cook is not a swinging singer and uptempo is not her pace; give her a ballad, though, and she'll wring the last drop of emotion out of it. Her version of "Losing My Mind" (here paired with "Not a Day Goes By") is simply astonishing. The singer also performs songs that Sondheim has said he wished he had written, an awful lot of them by Harold Arlen. No complaints here. Guest Malcolm Gets solos on a few songs and duets with Cook on others, including "Let's Face the Music and Dance." This is classic material done masterfully by a classic singer. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Wow!.......2004-02-20

Having read the other reviews there is little more for me to add. I have been a Barbara Cook fan for a longtime and for me, this is one of her best concerts ever. I do, however, prefer the DVD. As with some other reviewers, I do not want to hear Malcolm Gets (as much as I like him) when I want to listen to Barbara. Her flawless interpretation of music is a hard act to follow for any singer! I managed to see this concert 4 times over a year and a half. Each time I saw her the voice was stronger and more assured (I would not have thought that possible). I can't help but think we will have the pleasure of hearing Ms Cook for many years to come. For those people who enjoyed his CD I strongly recommend purchasing the DVD. Barabara's rendition of So Many People is breathtaking (literally, I don't think I breathed once during the entire song). If you ever have opportunity to see her live - go! She has an ability to make you feel as if every song she sings and every word she speaks is directed to you alone. She can take a large venue and make it feel as intimate as your own living room. Having had the pleasure of meeting her I can say she is as youthful and pleasurable in person as she is in her performance.

Everyone Should Whistle.......2003-10-11

After being privileged to attend this concert, I had to own the CD. Once a lyric coloratura and the original Cunegonde in Bernstein's Candide, Ms. Cook has become (in her 70s) a true diva, blessed with a velvety, warm sound. Every note has meaning. Her high B-flat on "Ice Cream" is still the envy of any soprano today. Everyone should whistle after hearing the superb performances on this CD. Even better, though, is the experience of having been in the concert hall for the live performance. Brava, Ms. Cook!

An amazing intro to the body of work of a true master.......2003-06-16

When I first bought tickets for the 'Mostly Sondheim' show on tour (in San Francisco) I figured it couldn't be too bad. Besides, I had only been exposed to a few of his songs (Anyone Can Whistle, Losing My Mind...) and had only seen "A Little Night Music". On the way out of the theater I immediately picked up this recording of the program. It is truly amazing. I immediately began listening to it and have barely put it down in the last few months. Furthermore, my Sondheim CD collection increased in size from an unflattering zero to five (and it's still growing)! This is an amazing introduction to the works of Stephen Sondheim, who is now my favorite modern musical composer). Buy this now if you don't already have it!

Beautiful, moving concert.......2003-04-13

This is a wonderful CD set with a great selection of songs. I do want to express a slight reservation, however. Barbara Cook has been one of my favorite singers for a number of years and the way her voice defies time is extraordinary -- for her to be singing with such bright, beautiful tone in her mid-70s with no wobble or beat in the voice is an amazing achievment.

I do have to say that by 2001, when this concert was recorded, Cook seemed to have a lost a little bit of power and intensity in her singing. This is only natural for someone of her age. Her voice is still lovely, but you can sense her keeping it in reserve a bit. She's as expressive as ever, but compare the rendition of "I got lost in his arms" on this album to the one on her previous album recorded in 1999, "The Champion Season", and there's less urgency and vocal depth in her singing here. That said, the high B at the end of "Ice Cream" is sensational.

So, despite that caveat, this is, again, a wonderful album, a must for Cook fans, especially for the gorgeous renditions of songs I'd never thought I'd get to hear her perform: "Not a Day Goes By", "Happiness/Loving You", "San Francisco", etc. Buy it!

... and I love Barbara Cook.......2003-02-11

This recording is a disappointment for me. It is not her best work, and Malcolm Gets is uninspired. My biggest complaint however is the engineering of the recording. Throughout the speaking was to soft, the singing volumes uneven, and the applause deafening. I will be passing this CD on to friends, and will later donate it to my local library.

As its title indicates, this 1985 recording marked Barbra Streisand's return to her Broadway roots (significantly, she had dropped her pop-period Guilty perm and returned to straight hair). The CD contains a broad selection of show tunes, from Guys and Dolls's "Adelaide's Lament" to Sweeney Todd's "Not While I'm Around." But let's face it: this may also be one of Babs's most dated albums, due to typically '80s synthesizer-heavy arrangements that simply don't work with the material. Company's "Being Alive" is scarred by a preening alto sax, while West Side Story's "Something's Coming" features what sounds suspiciously like syndrums. But--and it's a pretty big "but"--Streisand sounds more buttery than ever ("Send in the Clowns" may be one of her finest '80s moments), so much so that she often manages to overcome the cheesy production. Learning About Love While Yearning.......2007-06-09

C. Kenneth Burkholder, who via an understanding was at the time of the original release of this was Barbra's prospectve father-in-law and whose death has occurred, said of this "If I Loved You", "That's nice." The tragicomic rendition of part of Adelaide fascinatingly points out some dangers of stripping for pay.
Just past the beginning of creating "What Times Are," a musical by (a) pacifist(s) as well as an adaptation of my play "What Time Is It, Neil Armstrong?," which is a sequel to my novel "How Did That Sun Get Out," I am inspired by the yearning apparent in "The Broadway Album"--a yearning not for perfection but for worthwhile ways for people all over the earth and in space to spend time.

I bought the CD to replace my worn-out cassette tape, and I was pleased to find it has one more track -- Adelaide's Lament -- which I enjoyed. Nice to have another comic song to balance out the love songs. She brings out the beauty of these lovely tunes.

Barbra is the number one female ballad singer of all time. No one has her range of feeling, the sheer lyric power of her voice, her sometimes exaggerated but often poignant power to dramatically express feeling. She can create the chill down the spine with a small trill or with a wild unexpected crescendo. 'Broadway' is her first home, and acting a song as she sings it comes natural to her.
This is one of her finest albums.

This is from the big-shot who thinks she can control a political party and tell fans what to think about issues despite being a high-school dropout. She's a good singer, but not the best. She basically needs to shut the eff up and sing. Hey, those are her words, right?

This album contains the choicest of Broadway hits given an outstanding interpretation by the Streisand. Barbra's flawless voice moves up and down with ease as the melodies unfold. Perfect!

Love the choices.......2006-08-11

This is great. Anything with Ethel, Bernadette, Barbara (both of them), Mary, and Marin is beyond words. Any one of them by themselves is awesome but these ladies together are mind blowing. All of the women sound amazing but they made a mistake on the list of songs and composers. "Raise the Roof" sung by Julia Murney (I love her)was written by Andrew Lippa, not LaChusia.

The divas are indeed divine, but the choice of music sung left me wondering why, with so many other great music selection contenders.

OK, so it sounds crazy to review an album with Ethel Merman and Bernadette Peters on it and not mention them. But...tough. I've read enough about them to know how good they are.

Buy this album as a token of love to the producer who had the cajones to put Julia Murney on an album celebrating the last 100 years of Broadway divas.

Because SHE is one of the greatest voices of the decade!

Some of the songs on here are good and some are just not funny at all. I prefer some of his others works to this one, but it is still worth listening to.

Recorded live at the Prince Music Theater in Philadelphia, this double CD is one heck of an extensive tribute to Stephen Sondheim. Backed only by Paul Ford on piano, Mandy Patinkin gets through nearly three dozen songs penned by the Broadway master. Some are obvious (excerpts from Sunday in the Park with George, in which the singer created the title role), others less so ("If You Can Find Me I'm Here" from Evening Primrose). Patinkin is often mocked for his shivering falsetto, but here, it's actually when his voice explores a lower register that it falters. What's more interesting is when he tackles songs usually sung by women, such as Follies' "Broadway Baby" and Company's "Another Hundred People" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy"--the latter hammed up so much that you can hear the chewing of the scenery. A distinctively mannered interpreter, Patinkin remains an acquired taste, but fans of his will be in heaven with this set. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Sondheim recital.......2007-01-22

Probably the best way to approach these disks is to treat them like a recital in a concert hall. Rather as you would listen to a Schubert or Schumann song cycle. Taken together this way, we come to hear Sondheim as one of our finest composers, serious, comic, manic, depressive, always dead on target no matter what the subject matter. And Patinkin is perfect for these songs; he understands the meaning and value of every note and every word, just as a fine concert singer would do, and he makes his listeners understand, too. One of the most intriguing concept albums in recent memory, and a joy all the way through. Bob Finley, Palm Springs, CA.

I too LOVE Mandy and Stephen Sondheim and own just about everything both has ever made! I also have been to 6 of Mandy's live performances. This was truly a big dissapointment to me. Every concert I have seen Mandy in has been filled with emotion and his personality just grabs hold of you for an evening of wonderful escape-ism. This to me was very un-entertaining and I actually became irritated after awhile of listening to it. It seemed to drone on with out the wonderful feelings and emotions and soaring voice that Mandy typically puts into his music. I gave this as a gift too (since my friend and I had missed Mandy at his Sondheim review in DC last year) and felt badly that I had. There are so many other great recordings of Mandy...Kidults, Saturday in the Park with George, The Secret Garden, Mandy sings Rogers & Hammerstien and Sondheim. This one has just sat on my shelf after I played it through twice hoping to warm up to it...while my other recordings are very worn out with years of playing!

Adequate performance; poor entertainment.......2003-05-04

I received this disc the same day a "Philip Quast Live at the Donmar". The Quast disc has its own flaws (and I dont wish to compare the two performers) but it has been strung together in a more thoughtful manner, with witty imagination and using a more dangerous in the choice of songs, which is really where this disc fails. The songs here are generally enjoyable though rather standard, and the lack of cohesion (running the songs together doesnt count) means I just dip into the discs listening to a few favourites, rather than enjoying the whole show.

I have every recording Patinkin appears on, even if he's only on one track; I adore his voice, his flair, his emotion, his ability to deliver a song.

But (much of) this recording is disappointing, mainly because Mr. Patinkin's voice in the lower range sounds muddled and forced, as though he's lost ability to control it (however, the more falsetto sounds are as clear and sharp as ever).

And I don't care for the format of this performance. Live recordings should have live audience reactions: one (often unrelated) song after another without applause had me wondering when--if ever--was the audience was going to be allowed to react.

Also, while I've never had the privilege of attending a Patinkin concert, I imagined that--above all-- he would be passionate. Perhaps he was. But what (mostly) comes across on the CD is a somber--almost technical--performance.

I hope he's healthy, that mixed quality of singing on this recording was just a fluke, and that his next CD will be a Five-star as all his previous ones have been

What a train wreck!.......2003-01-15

Hate to join the chorus of neigh-sayers, but jeeeez! I have to agree that with the exception of a few cuts (such as "Hyphenated Harriet") Mandy is a vocal bull in a china shop -- what he doesn't shatter he ... on. What should have been a tribute (I love Sondheim, but do we need ANOTHER anthology recording of oft sung songs?)is more like a wake. Mandy seems intent on becoming the male Ethel Merman -- if you can't hold the note, belt it out with a misplaced vabrato and maybe no one will notice. I REALLY wanted to like this recording, but is truly horrible. If the pipes are gone, Mandy, I hope you get back to acting.
