On her fourth album, Taking A Chance On Love, singer Jane Monheit makes her leap to the majors and the fit is a good one. As she's proven on past efforts, Monheit is a traditional stylist who expertly mines American standards by balancing pop's accessible sensibility and jazz's rich complexity. The material could be, and has been, in worse hands than Monheit's--her exceptional technique again brings these songs to life without taking liberties with structure, melody or odd arrangements. It's her exceptional execution, tonal palette, and phrasing that gives these songs a sense of artistry. She also gets subtle support from an impressive cast of sidemen (including guest singer Michael Buble, bassists Ron Carter and Christian McBride, and guitarist Romero Lubambo) in a variety of contexts, ranging from jazz combos to orchestra to vocal-and-single-instrument duets. If I would hear an angel, I think will sound like the voice of Jane Monheit. I really enjoyed the CD, best the romantic songs: In the still of the night my favorite.

This one is well worth it just for the cover of "Honeysuckle Rose". I can't give it a just description, but her phrasing is joyously playful, her range and pitch are both so impressive, and the overall effect, with a very tight band, brings a smile of pure delight to my face every time I listen to it. While the rest of the CD is not quite as much fun, nearly every cut is pleasure to listen to. The only cuts I tend to skip over are "Bill" (kinda boring) and "Dancing in the Dark" (too operatic to fit with the rest of the CD).

Wanna fall in love?.......2006-08-08

Apparently, being an incredibly talented singer is too boring for those reared on novelty acts and bizarre, marginal voices. Perhaps if she had the voice of a drunken demon like Macy Gray or the Drano throat of Rod Stewart or the often (and strangely) barely audible whispers of the ever-present Diana Krall, then such mediocrity would satisfy some of the other reviewers here who seem to thrive on that. Does matchless beauty so threaten mere mortals that they lose the ability to even recognize the greatness before them? Judging from her work so far, Ms. Monheit is destined for legendary status. Avedon would take her picture. Warhol would paint her. The unequalled gift of this angel will eventually silence her petty detractors.

This album of songs is another chest of treasures from Ms. Monheit's obviously inexhaustible supply. There are so many notable tracks; it is difficult to lift out particulars on which to comment. "Dancing in the Dark" with its lush production is a particularly stellar vehicle for Ms. Monheit's instrument. This is a youthful, vibrant, embracing voice which sometimes reveals its most pleasing characteristics on subsequent hearings. I was first smitten with it on a lazy afternoon browsing at Borders when I heard a sample song from her 2001 release "Come Dream Me." The song was "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most" and I was floored. It was shock and awe to my senses. I was hooked on Monheit.

I highly recommend this album. There is a pleasing duet with Buble that takes Monheit to Vegas (where he mostly lives.) "Do I Love You" makes a mean old fool remember when he first fell in love. On "Bill" the solo piano combined with Monheit outshine any orchestra and strangely, made me badly wish I was named "Bill."

The only song that I really liked on this cd was "I won't dance". She sang this song with the fantastic Michael Buble. If they had the video of Jane Monheit and Michael Buble singing, "I won't dance", I would definitely buy it. If you have seen the video, it is really cute and they are really flirty together. If you haven't seen it, you could find it at www.janemonheit.com. The other songs are boring.

Jane Monheit is incredible with that voice! This is a beautiful CD full of great songs. When I first heard this CD I had to get it, and I am so glad that I did because I never get tired of listening to it. Jane's voice is soothing and classic, what a great sound that is far away from so many of todays untalented young singers. Jane's voice reminds us that there is still hope for REAL young talent. Thank you Jane!

The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

A Long Awaited "Gem".......2007-07-09

My LP of this show was totally worn out, so I'm absolutely delighted to have this on such a great sounding CD. Davis is right up there with other musical luminaries such as Hepburn in COCO and Bacall in WOMAN OF THE YEAR and APPLAUSE. All three were non-singers who acted, and their recordings are really just a joy to have to offset soprani like Cook, Chenowith, and Lukker.

This really is a must have recording for any true musical comedy lover who wants the unusual and historical. Davis's "Turn Me Loose on Broadway" is wonderful from her "Mistah conductah, iff You Pleeees" to her slightly off tempo "hey" in the dance break. Davis did try to sing several times through her career. Frank Loesser's "They're Either Too Young or Too Old" has been on a few collections, and there was that failed musical version of THE CORN IS GREEN entitled MISS MOFFAT that closed in Philadelphia. Betty Davis wasn't a good singer, but she tried!

The supporting cast is excellent, and I think it's just a joy to hear an old-school musical by one of the forgotten greats, Vernon Duke. That's why I'm really pleased to have the Duke bonus tracks on the CD as well. It's a great value with Davis, Duke, and Lawrence Welk and his orchestra as well. The album was coveted for years, and it's just wonderful to have it in better sound than it ever was.

Bette Davis in a musical...yes, you heard right.......2006-10-05

Bette Davis in a musical? In 1952, when her film career started on yet another downward spiral and she was unceremoniously labelled as "box office poison", the legendary Ms Davis decided to do the unthinkable, and made her Broadway musical debut in TWO'S COMPANY, a fluffy little revue that would have certainly folded a lot quicker if a mega-watt star like Davis was not in the starring role.

TWO'S COMPANY ran on the box office power of Davis, and the moment she became ill and started missing performances, the closing notices were posted (the show limped along for 90 performances). Nevertheless, this curious jewel of a show was recorded, and now gets it's CD premiere thanks to British boutique label Sepia.

Apparently, Davis was so embarrased by her performance, that she attempted to buy every single copy of the original LP in order to destroy them. One can just imagine Davis (in full Margo Channing mode) swaggering into a record store and slamming a pile of TWO'S COMPANY albums onto the sales counter ("don't bother to wrap `em!").

While Davis was never a singer, she croaks out her songs quite well, and what she lacks in musicality she compensates with comedy and sheer brio.

Performing the more demanding material is Ellen Hanley, known to musical fans for her Tony-winning role as Thea in "Fiorello!"; as well as Adrianna in the 1963 Off-Broadway revival of "The Boys from Syracuse", and replacing Polly Bergen in "First Impressions" (the Jane Austen/'Pride & Prejudice' musical of 1959).

Sepia's remaster of the TWO'S COMPANY album (taken from original 78's) is quite crisp and clean, with some slight hiss and sonic wobble in certain areas (like towards the end of "Haunted Hot Spot"), although we are lucky to have this title on disc in the first place.

A Great Must Have .......2005-12-29

Cabin in the Sky is an excellent, excellent black film. Very entertaining and a movie that projects the power of a conscience. I first saw Cabin in Sky on the AMC channel with my dad when I was 15 years old. I am now 32 years old and every time I watch the movie it is as if I am watching it for the first time. This is a great movie and I can't wait for the DVD version.

Perfectly remastered classic.......2001-09-18

I have to give this CD 5 stars since it provides americans the only chance to listen to the fine voice of Kenneth Spencer. It's worth buing the CD just for the one track he's singing.

Louis, Lena, Ethel, and Eddie in a classic.......2000-12-13

CABIN IN THE SKY is one of my favorite films, and the soundtrack does full justice to the score and the performers. 5 extended versions and 4 outtakes are welcome additions to this entertaining CD. The combination of jazz and inspirational tunes surpisingly come together very harmoniously in this mixture of fantasy and reality. The sound quality is fine, though a stereo remix was not possible. From the opening "Lil' Black Sheep" to "Taking a Chance on Love" the score is full of gems and anyone who loves musicals will be inspired by this soundtrack.

INCREDIBLE SOUNDTRACK.......1999-07-31

Duke Ellington, Ethel Waters & Lena Horne, what else could a musical ask for. Three giants of jazz & blues,who show us a small portion of their great indvidual talents on this soundtrack.

Duke Ellington's , Going Up, Lena's version of Ain't it the Truth, and the wonderful swinging vocals of Ethel Waters. One of the african-american divas that was there when blues and jazz started, and one of the earliest to be recorded. Makes you wonder why more musicals were not made with these great artists.Reccommend also all of Miss Waters recordings reissued on the Classics Label from 1921-1940. This cd is a must for anyone interested in jazz or blues.

I think this is my favorite cast album of the past couple of decades. Latouche was among the finest of 20th Century Broadway lyricists and this recording of an off-Broadway revue/compilation of his work is a gem. Latouche's lyrics were well-structured, clever, intelligent and emotional. His collaborators included Vernon Duke, Leonard Bernstein, Jerome Moross and Duke Ellington among others. This album features four splendid performers (Jerry Dixon, Donna English, Eddie Korbich and Terry Burrell) who perform a dazzling array of Latouche's work. My favorite tracks are two songs from Latouche and Moross's "The Eccentricities of Davy Crockett". Both "Yellow Flower" (performed by Donna English) and "Ridin' On the Breeze" (sung by Jerry Dixon) are so gorgeous it's temping to program the CD player just to play these two tracks over and over. But I melt when I hear the stunning rendition of "Lazy Afternoon" from THE GOLDEN APPLE by Eddie Korbich and Jerry Dixon. Although Korbich got the lion's share of the reviews for the show and an Obie award, for me the star of the album is Jerry Dixon. His sensitive yet manly voice is that of a true artist. He and Terry Burrell are both terrific on the miniversion of CABIN IN THE SKY. Donna English is also especially impressive in that she is required to demonstrate an enormous range, from the folksy "Yellow Flower" to the operatic selections from CANDIDE to the bizarre song "The Surrealist" and the jazzy "Honey in the Honeycomb." Ms. English scores every time. My only complaint is all the biographical narration. At first I didn't mind it, but it becomes tedious with repeated hearing. For that I deduct one star. But the rest of the CD is brilliant. Those who love Broadway musicals will love this CD, too.

Take a Chance on Latouche.......2001-02-19

John Latouche was a lyricist who wrote for Broadway from the Thirties until his death in 1951. While he enjoyed only modest commercial success, he turned out quite a bit of wonderful work. This album isa a recording of an Off-Broadway revue of his work that is delightful both as a "musical highlights" of his career and as a listening experience in its own right.

The choice of material is excellent--ranging from haunting "art" songs to snappy specialty/comedy numbers ("The Surrealist", describing a Salvadore Dali-type artist's marriage to a bearded lady is a particular gem) to belty Broadway showstoppers. Over half of the numbers are previously either unrecorded or available for the first time on CD, making this a must-have for collectors. Of these, my favorite is "Plain Words" which was written for Candide (for which Latouche finally received the credit "Other Lyrics By"); the Leonard Bernstein melodies for this song later showed up in "Oh Happy We" and a "Mazurka" in the 1956 Broadway production.

The presentation of the songs is excellent, and the four-person cast give uniformly fine performances (I was struck by the soprano, Donna English, who sounds uncannily like Barbara Cook in the above-mentioned "Plain Words" and also stands out in "Windflowers" from The Golden Apple). Anyone who enjoys Broadway-style music and is willing to venture outside the familar favorites will certainly be pleased by this album.

I saw the show from which this album is derived, and anyone with an interest in theatre should rush to buy it. Latouche was an extremely important figure in the theatre, not just because of his accomplishments, but also because of the influence he exerted on the artistic demi-monde of New York at the time.

The cast is superb, and there is a wealth of fascinating material here. Erik Haagensen, who put the show together, is especially to be commended for giving us an opportunity to rediscover an interesting, and at times bedeviling figure in the history of musical theatre.
