I love Stacy Kents voice and the combination of her voice with her husbands Sax is amazing and soothing.......It has been my travel CD to and from work for a month now. Just cannot stop listening to it.
It is really one of Stacy Kents best.
Kent Bills and Coos.......2007-03-05
"The Boy Next Door," by American-born British songster Stacey Kent, is a collection of songs associated with singers she admires, from Tony Bennett to Frank Sinatra. She's into jazz and pop, even a little light rock, and jazzy pop; her light, clear voice makes light work of them all, too, though, oddly enough, every single inspiration Kent cites in this album is male. Never mind, she opens on a jazzy take of Tony Bennett's version of Coleman and Leigh's "The Best Is Yet To Come," and flirts with Ray Charles' rocking "Makin' Whoopee." Does a lovely version of James Taylor's homespun "You've Got a Friend," by Carole King. Detours to Broadway with "People Will Say We're In Love," by Rogers and Hammerstein, as done by the big voice of Gordon MacRae. Borrows Cole Porter's "You're The Top" from the illustrious cabaret artist Bobby Short. However, Louis Armstrong's "I Got It Bad," as recorded by Duke Ellington, may have been a mistake for her. That song's been recorded by some of the biggest, baddest girls in jazz, and Kent may be a trifle light of voice, and light in the life experience department, to be trying to compete with them. But, all in all, you could almost say that in this album, at least, she makes a virtue of not writing her own material.
The album, as arranged and produced by her English husband Jim Tomlinson, who also plays saxophone and backs her on vocals, is a charmer. Kent's voice, and that of Tomlinson's sax, bill and coo like honeymooners. I've been lucky enough to catch them in person a couple of times, and what charming evenings they were.
Stacey Kent - "The Boy Next Door".......2007-01-09
Wonderful songs from a singer with a natural jazz voice.
Refreshing!.......2007-01-03
I only recently discovered Stacey Kent after wearing out Dianna Krall, Harry Connick Jr., Nora Jones, etc. and I couldn't be more pleased! I can't get enough of her marvelous verbal articulation, clear voice, and playful lyrics. Every word is understandable and her unique voice is an absolute pleasure. I highly recommend this disk as I think it is probably one of her best.

Stacey Kent is well-known to audio manias in Japan.
I think this CD's sound quality is pretty good.
If you don't know a Japanese singer, Natsukawa Rimi,
I advise you to listen to her CDs.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent, just excellent.......2007-02-06
3 Reasons why this CD is awesome:
1. The back cover blurb says "Hazleton is at home as both a church and theater organist." TRUE. Just when you're getting tired of the standard theater organ sound (overly vibrato, skating rink kind of shimmer) he throws in a piece like "The Lost Chord," which builds and builds and BUILDS, sounding like a monster church organ at the National Cathedral.
2. I always thought it would be cool to have a piece where every possible organ sound effect gets used. "The Stripper" has it all! It starts out with the tambourine and and shake bells, moves into the opening melody on a grand piano - which is linked to this Wurlitzer's keyboard [!], and before you're done he's thrown every sound effect you can think of -- even a siren! And IT WORKS! Amazing!
3. If you've ever been to an organ concert, you know half the fun is hearing the low frequency sonics of the really low pipes. The fidelity of this recording captures it! Turn it up and feel the rumble!
Really glad I got this. Highly recommended.
All i can say is "WOW!".......2002-09-12
I received my CD today. I have a THX system and the mighty organ kicks and kicks hard. You will feel like your at Radio City Music Hall even though this isn't the Music Halls organ except for the organ name. The stereo separation is great and if you have a subwoofer you'll get that great rumbling sound that you can only get from the mighty Wurlitzer but it isn't overpowering. I was really impressed with this CD and if your into theatre organ music,,,,this is the one to get. Trust me,,,,you won't be disappointed. IT KICKS.

Customer Reviews:
lovely.......2004-08-29
Being an opera fan, I'm often disappointed by cross-over albums. I agree with one the of the other reviews that mentions Upshaw are being more successful in this type of repertoire. But Murphy is quite lovely. It was nice to hear a few pieces I was unfamiliar with like "The French Song" and "Times Like This"... and I'm a sucker for "Come to my Garden" (even though I REALLY hated the boy soprano!). Overall, a very pleasant disc - perhaps not too deep on interpretation - but beautifully sung.
Lovely, But Bland.......2003-03-14
I've often enjoyed hearing Heidi Grant Murphy at the Metropolitan Opera House. Her crystal-clear soprano is truly beautiful, light and delicate, yet solid enough to handle Strauss and Mozart. Similar singers, most notably Dawn Upshaw, have triumphed in the musical theater repertory, so why not isn't this disc more successful? First of all, Ms. Grant isn't particularly successful as an actress. While some of the songs (most notably "I Have to Tell You") are beautifully realized, most are simply sung, with very little thought as to their meaning for the "character." In recordings a singer has to paint a larger picture, given the absence of sets, costumes, dialogue etc. Perhaps if we could see Grant's face, we'd know what she were feeling; but, of course, we can't. And as the musical director has advised Ms. Murphy to sing everything on the downbeat, the chances of her actually expressing some emotion are slim to none. Additionaly, I find the arrangements to be either unimaginative or intrusive. I will say that I absolutely love the selection of songs here. "Times Like This" is one of my favorite theater songs, as is "New Words." And what a pleasure to see an album of this sort with selections from "She Loves Me" and "Fanny," one not weighted down with the obligatory Sondheim and Lloyd Weber. All in all, this is a pleasant, lovely disc, one which I don't think you'll be sorry to have. But it doesn't compare to Upshaw's Rodgers & Hart CD, Terfel's Alan Jay Lerner disc, or Te Kanawa's Irving Berlin collection, which had the good fortune to be arranged by Jonathan Tunick.
Bright and lovely.......2003-01-31
This is a CD you don't want to miss. An addition to your special collection of all time favorites. Miss Grant Murphy has a voice that is a pure delight of pleasure; a clear and lyricly treat to the senses. Her Choice of music is different and blends well from selection to selection. Her arrangement of The French Song and (Vanilla) Ice Cream is bright and underlined with wonderful humor. Miss Grant Murphy's rendition of If I Were A Bell is just that...a bell...clear and bright.
Do your self a favor and order Times Like This. Bring an early spring into your life.
