Watching the Snow
Editorial Reviews
Album Description
Pop/jazz/rock cross-over star Michael Franks' first-ever holiday album sets the scene for mirth, merriment, and a cool yule all around. On tracks like "Said the Snowflake" and "I Bought You A Plastic Star (For Your Aluminum Tree)," the artist's trademark wit and lyrical worldplay are clearly in evidence. And throughout the disc's ten tracks, this master musician taps into his signature sense of timeless romance, wrapping his poetic songcraft in melodies as inviting as a blanket of freshly fallen powder. Delight your senses with the magic of the season, as observed by Michael Franks.

Great Michael Franks eclectic lyrics!.......2007-05-15
I really enjoyed this CD even though it isn't near Christmas time. His lyrics to the songs are so great no matter what time of year! I loved the melodies too. My favorite song was "I Bought You a Plastic Star (For Your Aluminum Tree)" - excellent!
Watching the Snow by Michael Franks.......2007-03-09
I have always been a fan of Michael Franks and although I was not aware it was a Christmas CD when I purchased it in February...I have and will be enjoying it when Christmas rolls around again.
It's about time Mike!.......2007-01-30
Your fans have waited patiently for your Holiday Album. I LOVE the fact that these are ORIGINAL holiday songs, and not the tradional songs that everyone else does.
Nice, smooth, just right for relaxing. Bought You a Plastic Star--CLASSIC! I love how you tease us with mellow tones and unpredictible lyrics.
Keep going Mike. WE LOVE YOU!!
Sorry to disagree, but this is the worst of Micheal.......2007-01-27
I am a big fan and have several albums and CD's. This is without a doubt the worst (which still does not make it bad). The sound is too mellow and listless for me and my companion. For new listeners, try 'The Art of Tea', 'Dragonfly Summer' or 'Blue Pacific' for Micheal at his best.
The Snow.......2007-01-05
If you have followed Michael from his debut, you will hear the sounds from some of those albums. You will like this album a lot.

Album Description
A veritable guitar orchestra with a bit of singing by my son. Thanks to modern technology I was able to realize a dream of mine: to create an ensemble of acoustic guitarists that would all play in tune and do what I wanted. Well, I got it!
These are traditional holiday songs arranged in a non traditional way. And yes, that is me singing on Angels We Have Heard on High. (Email me for quantity discounts on this one and any other title you might want.)

Customer Reviews:
frankly,franks is the best.......2004-10-28
what can i say that hasnt been said...the man is pure genius.I grew up to this man an i would love for one of his classics to be the last song i hear.A x-mas CD? i can jam it in the month of june cruising down the detroit river. Just another one hit out the park for mr. Franks.
365 days of Christmas.......2004-09-16
This is just great. The funny thing about this "Holiday" album is that until you listen to the lyric, it could be simply another good MF disc. That being said, the funny, clever holiday lyric is pure Franks at his best. I had this playing at work since May and people really get into the jazz beats, humming and asking "Who's that?" I say it's a Christmas disc and everyone makes a face. If you like MF this is a real gem. Classic Franks
Irving Berlin, Move Over!.......2004-07-22
Having ordered and recieved "Snow" when it was initially offered via MF's website last winter, there have been 8 months of enjoyment that has not waned a bit (okay maybe a little bit, after all, it's 90 freakin degrees right now). I can say without hesitation that this CD has been added to my holiday rotation along with the offerings of Berlin, Snoopy's jazz piano, Krall, that faux German techno-pop group, and now Franks. This is a compliment. Ironically, the one track that I thought would be the least liked has turned out to be my favorite--"My Present" was recorded twice on this CD, once as primarily Franks and his piano, and then with electronic back up. I like the full electronic version better. His words and melodies really jump started me into the XMAS season. I am not going to analyze each and every track. By the damn CD and I guarantee you won't feel like youv'e been the victim of a "snow" job.(sorry). Just as an aside, I was able to catch Franks and his ensemble at a small club in Annapolis right after the release of this CD. His voice "live" has a resonance that just can't be copied on disc. The band was tight, the music fantastic. I hope he comes back this year. He has not lost a step, like Barry Bonds, he is now hitting them out of the park better than ever.
Finally, new Holiday songs with a gentle jazz twist!.......2003-11-12
This album can now be ordered directly from Michael's website, autographed. This CD contains a wide variety of songs that set the perfect mood for the holidays, even if you are an old Scrooge like me. As usual with Michael's lyrics, there is always a tongue-in-check, humorous quality with delicate rhymes and mostly non-denomination. Also, this collection contains the top studio muscians currently working the jazz/pop field. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have!

Here's a chance to dial yourself back to Edwardian England to sample one of the most extraordinary singers of the 20th century. Clara Butt stood 6-foot-2 with a frame to match and a voice that easily spanned the range between a soprano's top notes and a baritone's low ones. An important singer, even if an acquired taste for many, Butt sang with a power that defied the primitive recording equipment of the time. However, Ward Marston has done an amazing job of sonic restoration, so even these acoustic recordings--made between 1909 and 1921--convey the quality of her singing. The repertory is representative of her concert programs: a nod to operatic and oratorio selections, classical songs, and a heavy dose of the folk songs and sentimental ballads that endeared her to audiences, helping to transform her into a national institution. These days, songs like "The little silver ring" and "Snowdrops" may have little intrinsic interest; yet Butt hasn't lost her own thanks to the quality of her vocalism, her one-in-a-million voice, mastery of legato singing, and the perfect diction that lets every word sound. She can take a narrative ballad like "Barbara Allen" and make it a gripping dramatic miniature, and she transforms the quasi-religious sentimentality of "Abide with Me" into something intense. --Dan Davis
