The national arrival of Virginia-Washington, D.C. singer René Marie is a major event in the jazz vocal ranks. She has passion and technique to spare, and she's willing to try unusual material and fresh approaches. A ballad like "The Very Thought of You" shows her in command of all the traditional virtues, unfaltering pitch and articulation, subtle inflections of her sound, and a personal approach to reshaping melody. She even takes some signature songs and makes them her own, recasting "God Bless the Child" at a fast tempo that takes it out of Billie Holiday's exclusive orbit. She has a sense of a lyric's strength, too, whether it's the potent protest of Nina Simone's "Four Women" or the whimsy of Harold Arlen and Truman Capote's "A Sleepin' Bee."

The musicians are superb, working hand in glove with Marie well beyond the usual accompanying roles, from the Afro-Cuban modal powerhouse "Afro Blue" to the township groove of the title song. Pianist Mulgrew Miller surrounds her voice with the most apt chords, while bassist Ugonna Okegwo, solid throughout, makes a compelling duet of "Motherless Child." "Tennessee Waltz" picks up jazz harmonies from Marie's voice and a strong country-blues infusion from Marvin Sewell's slide guitar, while "Afro Blue" has Marie soaring with Sam Newsome's soprano saxophone, effectively imitating a flute in the process. Marie's also an affecting songwriter, as the uptempo "I Like You" and the sultry "Hurry Sundown" make clear. René Marie is a classic jazz singer, one who sets her standards by Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Sarah Vaughan but still makes her own statements. --Stuart Broomer

4 out of 5 stars Be one of the first "in the know".......2005-06-15

I found this CD on a "So You'd Like to.." list from someone whose reviews I typically enjoy and was flabbergasted that I'd never heard of Ms. Marie before. She uses her supple voice to assay classics in startingly fresh ways, such as the bluesy "Tennessee Waltz", which includes a brief yodel section (stop cringing, the way she does it it's AMAZING...) or the zippy take on the Billie Holiday chestnut "God Bless the Child".

Marie is helped along here by pianist Mulgrew Miller, bassist Ugonna Okegwo, guitarist Marvin Sewell, Sam Newsome on soprano sax, and Gerald Cleaver behind the kit with Jeffrey Haynes assisting on percussion.

When I got here there were only 18 reviews, leading me to believe she's still fairly unknown. I borrowed this CD at our local library (God bless 'em) and here's my take:

HIGHLIGHTS:
Marie turns in a buoyant "What a Difference a Day Makes". The bridge alone (featuring Marie's "Harlem yodel" [she blends the blues into it rather than a pure country yodel] and a soaring wordless moan that stretches throughout her range and incorporates vocal trills at times) demonstrates the control Rene has over her voice and the lengths to which old songs may be stretched and remolded into something new. A barebones rendition of "Sometimes I Feel like a Motherless Child" deftly segues into her take on Nina Simone's "Four Women", makes it a laidback "coffeehouse" arrangement complete with bongo. The desire in her voice is palpable as she begs "Hurry sundown/bring him to my side..". A caffeine spiked version of "God Bless the Child" soars into the ether with a nice solo from Miller and some inspired scatting by Marie. The title hymn is a dancing ode to the power of the current breath...a celebration of life itself. ("No storm can shake my inmost calm while to that rock I'm clinging/Since love is lord of heaven and earth/how can I keep from singing?") A delicate whisper of a vocal does "The Very Thought of You" proud.

LOWS:
"I Like You" sounds like an attempt at the whimsical imagery of "My Favourite Things" but it's not up to the task. It's not awful...just far from being one of the better moments here. Likewise, I didn't find myself going back to "A Sleepin' Bee".

BOTTOM LINE:
Where have I been that I've been missing out on this woman? Where have YOU been? Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Artist, Just Hitting Her Stride.......2005-05-01

In the past 4 months I have become a huge Rene Marie fan. I consider "Serene Renegade" and "Live at the Jazz Standard" two of the best albums of the past two years. It's interesting to hear an album like this, released in 2000. It is a 5-star album; it pales only in comparison with the latter two Rene Marie albums. Whereas there she's roaring out of the starting blocks, here she's starting to hit her stride.

A good example of what I mean is the title track, "How Can I Keep from Singing." Here, accompanied by acoustic guitar, soprano sax, and percussion, it is outstanding; on "Live at the Jazz Standard," done a capella, it is out of this world.

Another example: Her original, "I Like You", is witty and has a nifty hook. Her later originals, "Paris on Ponce" and "Rufus Daliarg", are even better.

For me, the two highlights of this album are "Tennessee Waltz". She does this old chestnut as a blues, with a "yodel" at the bridge. When you think of the song's lyrics, it works as a blues. This is the most creative cover on the album; her latter two albums are full of creative covers, however.

And 5 stars to any singer who does the Nina Simone classic, "Four Women." This is the most under-covered classic around, undoubtedly because it doesn't work unless a Black woman singer sings it. But still, the last time I heard it covered was by a folk duo, Hedge and Donna, more than 30 years ago. Ms. Marie is sensational on this tune.

I also have to tip my hat to her cover of "God Bless the Child". I wouldn't think I'd like this song done as an uptune; but her scatting here is likewise sensational.

Bottom line: if you're a Rene Marie fan, you must have this. If you are a fan of jazz singing, you should have this. Highly recommended. RC

5 out of 5 stars Late Blooming Great Jazz Diva!.......2003-06-08

I enjoy listening to this new songtress. Ms. Rene Marie has a very pleasing silky smooth Jazz voice and she does great homage to the popular songs of the past, but I would like to hear her do more originals. She needs to record some songs to make own, songs that would be known as Rene Marie songs. I myself have some songs that I wrote that could help her out in that respect if she or her management were interested. All they need do is contact me at: bluesboy@his.com. In any case good luck to her with her career and I shall keep listening.

5 out of 5 stars Soaring Songbird.......2002-12-23

In reverse it was. I got "Vertigo" first, because that was the only one the store had. I was so in love with Rene's voice and vision that I just had to get her previous album. "How can I..." is almost better than the follow-up. They are similar in their greatness: Great musicians, innovative arrangements ("Afro Blue" and "God Bless the child"), and superb compositions by Rene, such as "I like you" and "Hurry Sundown." Rene has got to be one of the best jazz talents around today. Her improvisations are quite original and surprising, her vocal control is simply breathtaking, her compositions and arrangements of trad Jazz tunes is highly creative. Who would have taken "God bless..." at such a fast-paced tempo, when it always has been a ballad? Or, "Afro Blue" given a world-music dress? Her voice itself is also a wonder to behold. She can blare out like a perfectly controlled wind instrument at full volume, or she can whisper you into ecstasy with perfect timing and elastic phrasing on the ballads.Thank goodness she came out of her musical retirement. The music world is better thanks to her.

5 out of 5 stars This One Sings.......2002-03-23

Read the reviews, press releases etc... then buy it, you won't be disappointed. She rates right up there in quality and presence. A really wonderful talent.

1 out of 5 stars A Cramped Banal Vision of the Transcendent in Music.......2006-01-06

If you are 50+ years old and were a hippie back in the day, then you will love this album.

However, if you have a vital relationship to Christ in the Eucharist and find that you desire to be more like John Paul II than Mick Jaggar, then you will most likely know what it is like to suffer through an aging Boomer dominated liturgy having to listen to the banal diddies of Mr. Marty Haugen.

The vista of the transcendent ought to be reflected in liturgical music - simple Chant, Classical Hymns, and Choral music do this very well because there is no agenda in the music other than Beauty.

The music of Mr. Haugen betrays his agenda to re-make Catholicism into something that resembles the folk-hippy-holiness of the Boomer's drug induced "mystical" connectedness of their youth.

This music is the fruit of Woodstock and pot culture brought into the sanctuary.

Just listen to the free clips above and ask yourself, "In 200 years time, will the Catholic Church still be singing these songs and consider them 'sacred music'?"

    Me thinks not.

Spend your money on some solid Gregorian Chant instead.

    3 out of 5 stars Two-thirds good.......2003-03-28

Recorded at Prince's Paisley Park Studios (of all places!), the songs of Marty Haugen and David Haas come off well in this intimate live recording. Of the three billed performers, Haugen is definitely the best. His songs are more directly based on Scripture and are the best melodically. Haas's songs can be a little overbearing, but songs like "You Are Called" actually sound better than the original recordings, without the occasionally overdone production of the studio versions.

However, the album is brought down by the inclusion of the songs of Jeanne Cotter. She has a good voice, but her syrupy, cloying songs are just awful. Those looking for inspiration for their faith will be very turned off by sappy tracks like "Balloon Man" or "Cassie's Song". These don't make me want to seek out her solo albums in the least.

I always program my CD player to skip her songs. When I do, the album is very enjoyable, with spirited performances by everyone. If you do the same (or if you can actually put up with her songwriting), the album is not a bad purchase at all.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Mix.......2001-11-07

I bought quite a few cd albums from 2001 LA Religious Education Congress. This one is my favorite. From Bobby Fisher's guitar playing to Haas compositions are all well done. The musicians seemed to work well together. Some songs start out with comments from the performers; that give personal touches to the album. Since I'm more inclined toward drama in music, one or two of Jeanne Cotter more mellow pieces did do much to me.

Overall, it's a very well done album.

4 out of 5 stars Mixed bag, but worth it.......2000-06-15

Another live album from Marty Haugen and David Haas, this one includes quite a bit of Jeanne Cotter's work songs as well. I don't feel this album holds up as well against "Come and Journey", primarily because I'm not a big fan of Jeanne Cotter's songs (although she has a wonderful voice). David Hass puts in the strongest showing, including the very moving "Wherever You Go". Most of Marty Haugen's songs are more somber than usual though "All You Works of God" is an upbeat, welcome addition to the album. So, I don't think this album is as strong as "Come and Journey", but it's quite a good album anyway.

    5 out of 5 stars Jeanne's music is beautiful.......2000-06-12

I have always liked Jeanne's work on this collection. Her newest album, Diamonds on the Water (mythicrain.com), is unbelievably solid and amazing! The changes in her voice from then until now are remarkable. Congrats, Jeanne!

5 out of 5 stars Stunning introduction to an array of music.......2000-07-08

This album is a superb introduction to the variety of gospel music at its roots. In remastering early recordings the engineers have done an excellent job of cleaning enough surface noise out for one to enjoy the music - but not removing too much noise to distort the original intent.

You get a bit of Northern gospel as well as Southern gospel, accompanied and a cappella, solo and congregation, professional and "just plain folks". Every track is a gem of its type - only your personal preferences will distinguish the "best" tracks.

Today for best tracks I'll nominate God Leads His Dear Children Along by Rev Joseph Callender and I Want To Go Where Jesus Is by Slim Ducket/Pig Norwood. But that says nothing about my vote tomorrow.

This disc is a far-reaching collection of turn-of-the-century American religious song that suffers no shortage of spine-tingling performances throughout. Unlike similar compilations, it makes no racial or geographical distinctions, presenting rare recordings of raw hillbilly hymns (Morris Family) alongside gritty sanctified blues (Blind Willie Davis), Anglo-American sacred songs by congregations (George Long and His Singers), ecstatic preaching-singing recordings (Reverend J.F. Forest, Washington Phillips), and classic spirituals (Golden Gate Jubilee Quartet)--not to mention music that's essentially a combination of all the above (Brothers Wright and Williams). Acolytes of shape-note singing will enjoy some of the earliest Sacred Harp music ever recorded, by the stripped-down Roswell Sacred Harp Quartette. --Mike McGonigal

I say of this album what I say of volume one: This album is a superb introduction to the variety of gospel music at its roots. In remastering early recordings the engineers have done an excellent job of cleaning enough surface noise out for one to enjoy the music - but not removing too much noise to distort the original intent. As these are later recordings than the first volume, the final result has less surface noise.

You get a bit of blues and hillbilly, accompanied and a cappella, solo and congregation, professional and "just plain folks". Every track is a gem of its type - only your personal preferences will distinguish the "best" tracks.

My personal favorites are There Is A Fountain Filled with Blood by Copperhill Male Quartet and My Loving Brother (better known as The Fire Song) by Ed McConnell And Family.

Perhaps it's because I listened to Amai so much, I can't get as into this CD. The CD opens with a rousing Brazilian song. The energy of it reminds me strongly of the last track on Amai. The tracks after this one aren't quite as rousing and I feel that the song would have been better placed at the end of the album.

Other than that, the CD is better produced than the other two and you can hear it.

5 out of 5 stars Choral music with soul.......2003-10-10

Beautiful music sung by an award winning vocal group of lesbian/feminist women from Champaign-Urbana, Illinois. Everything about this cd is top notch - from the ceramic art works and book design to the quality and diversity of music. It's simply gorgeous.

        5 out of 5 stars Awesome women's a cappella group rocks!.......2002-03-02

I was intrigued by the eclectic mix of music: women's music, folk, spirituals, contemporary. This group puts together a great sound with arrangements that ROCK! For Choral fans and pop music fans alike. It's obvious that these women sing not only with accomplished voices, but with their hearts as well.

I have all three of their CDs and eagerly await the next one!
