Just in Time for Christmas
Editorial Reviews
B. Douglas Swiszcz, 1997
The purity and simplicity of Nancy's vocals penetrate every nook and cranny of the first song.

This Is Christmas Music At It's Very Best.......2007-05-29
I wish I could give everyone I knew this cd for Christmas. Of all of my Christmas music, this is probably the one I reach for the most. It is a much needed departure from all of the "canned" or "just add water" type of holiday music that floods the market. Nancy LaMott seemed to have an inner-beauty that came through into all of her music. I loved Nancy LaMott's singing and I am so glad she was able to have this cd produced before her much too early death.
Late Arriver in Appreciation.......2007-04-14
I first heard Nancy Lamott on a Christmas music CD distributed by Ralph Lauren. "Just In Time For Christmas" gradually became my favorite. I became determined to hear more from her and found this CD. The other reviewers of this CD are absolutely correct - you will really enjoy this music. I only wish I had heard her in person.
Nancy LaMott, Just in Time for Christmas.......2007-01-11
A great Christmas album. The title song is spectacular. I first heard it on a Ralph Lauren compliation CD for Christmas. That was the first time I heard Nancy, and I have been in love with her music since.
Nancy, with that Christmas feeling.......2006-12-01
I have an extensive... a euphamism here .... collection of Christmas and Advent music and I came upon this particular CD 'just in time for Christmas' last year. What a find!
Nancy Lamott's voice was a flexible, wonderful instrument. The only drawback song in my opinion is 'Santa Claus is Comin' to Town' - like many novelty songs, it loses something when you listen to this recording frequently. Otherwise, Nancy is here and her heart shines through her unique cabaret voice in different aspects on each song.
Nice to hear some 'new' standards as well - 'Christmas Cliches' and 'Just in Time for Christmas' stand out. The recording of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" is one of the best ones around because it sounds like they had fun playing off one another. Worth the time, worth the money. Nancy's voice had the ability of resonating with the heartstrings. Do yourself a favor and pick this one up.
Sing a Torch, Jeannette Isabella.......2005-01-01
Say what you want about Kathie Lee Gifford, she at least had the good taste and savvy to champion singer Nancy LaMott (during the latter's lifetime) and did her part to promote this great but somewhat obscure cabaret singer to a national audience. Of course, Nancy LaMott is still not the household name she should be if this were a just world. Posthumous stardom is not an impossibility, as the success of Eva Cassidy's records have proven. Nancy LaMott was certainly as big a talent--and as compelling a story as Ms Cassidy, but her recorded legacy has been (apparently) been tied up in various legal wranglings, which is more than unfortunate. It's almost criminal that her records are not more readily available. She was among the greats, and if megastardom was not something to be realized in her all too short life, at least let her be discovered now.
But, hey, it's the holiday season, and I'm in a generous mood, so let me just do my bit to promote Nancy LaMott's music--and in her Christmas album in particular. For some reason, I found myself going on a holiday music bender this year. Perusing the old collection, it became ridiculously clear how many holiday albums I owned, and how few I had actually listened to. Nancy's was one I had played quite a bit back when it was new, and then it joined the ranks of the other Christmas recordings stashed away "until next year."
So I made a point to rediscover these yuletide treasures once more this season. And many of them really were quite good. Of course, one hears the many of the same tunes over and over and over again. I'm sure that I could get into numerous debates over which singer "owns" this song or does "the definitive" take on that one. Such arguments are pointless, and not exactly in keeping with the holiday spirit anyway, but I will say this: when Nancy LaMott takes on one of those old holiday chestnuts (whether or not it's roasting on an open fire) you will, at least for the moment, put all other fondly remembered versions out of your mind. She makes all those old songs new again--no mean feat when you're talking "The Christmas Song" or "I'll Be Home For Christmas." And the new stuff is pretty wonderful too. A little cabaret irony on the title track and "All Those Christmas Cliches," a little unabashed mush on numbers like "Earth and Sky" and "Some Children See Him." It all works, in part because of who Nancy LaMott was--a great interpretive singer who could interpret just about anything.

Not impressed.......2003-11-25
I was not terribly impressed with this CD. Fortunately, I decided to get it from the library to see if it was good before deciding whether or not to buy it.
Although the orchestration of the songs is well done, most of them simply were not meant to be performed by a chorus; and they sound terrible in that form. If you want some of the songs on this CD, I suggest you look at one of Disney's compilation CDs in the Classic Disney Vol. 1-5 series or the actual soundtracks of the movies.
Inexorable wonder!.......2001-06-23
Where to start?! Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra have had a track record for recording some of the most stupendous movie music ever. Magical Musicals is just another example of how audaciously bold, yet beautiful Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops have taken the original scores, molded them into the same pieces, yet at the same time, creating life of their own in each and every note. If you are looking for ANY soundtrack containing Disney music, this should be the first CD you listen to. There are others out there, and yes, they may sound beautiful and enchanting, but you won't find such a unique and compelling score anywhere else other than this CD. Check it out!!

Customer Reviews:
Where would Christmas be without Mary & Joseph, Morecambe & Wise, Laurel & Hardy and cracker surprise?.......2006-12-16
In 1990, IRS Records released this CD, featuring Christmas songs performed by artists who recorded for their label. Songs are mostly originals, along with a few covers of older Christmas songs. All of the songs are at least decent, with nothing being bad. The original songs by Squeeze and the dB's are both great. As for the covers, Reckless Sleepers do a terrific version of "Every Day Will Be Like a Holiday" and Dread Zeppelin contribute a fun, irreverent version of "All I Want For Christmas is My Two Front Teeth". This CD is hard to find now, but it's worth looking for if you're tired of hearing the same old Christmas songs.
Creative, unique, always spirit-lifting!.......2006-12-15
I started getting interested in more diverse Christmas music at a good time. This CD was released, I grabbed it and haven't seen it around much since. A few of the tracks have made their way into other compilations like Rhino's Just Can't Get Enough - New Wave Xmas.
Squeeze starts off with Christmas Day - a modernized account of Jesus' birth. Clever, catchy, and a nice toe tapper. Cool Yule is next by Rebel Pebbles. Very girlish and fun, envision Cyndi Lauper going Christmas shopping with the Go-Gos.
Yo Ho Ho by Klark Kent (Stewart Copeland) - a well-put together tune. Copeland plays all his instruments on his solo KK album, I don't know if that's the case here. This one took a while to grow on me but it's a nice heartfelt ditty about being with family on Christmas.
Hark by Torch Song - a very upbeat techno version of Hark! The Herald Angels Sing. Mostly just a drumbeat and a few cut-up phrases from the carol, but this deserves mainstream airplay IMO. Followed by Every Day Will Be Like A Holiday by Reckless Sleepers. It has a beat and a vocalist reminiscent of Squeeze, a more easy listening tune. A traditional rendition of We Three Kings is next by Steve Hunter. An experienced guitarist who was worked with the likes of Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Lou Reed, and Mitch Ryder, Steve does a great standard guitar instrumental here.
The pace steps up a bit on Home for the Holidays by The dB's. It's a bit country, a bit corny, but it's okay. Silent Night by Molly Johnson and Norman Orenstein is next. Nothing fancy. Molly has a clean, pure voice and the guitar is an edgy, slightly fuzzed backdrop, it works. This was re-released on a 2005 CD called Plugged In For The Holidays, one I may have to pick up...
Okay, moving into the homestretch, Deborah Holland performs It Only Comes Once A Year. She has a super voice and sings a great original tune that has a light festive feel to it. Timbuk3 takes it from there with All I Want For Christmas. Using their classic lyric-bending ways, plays on words, etc., they make a ploy for peace among a Christmas list fraught with toys bent on violence. Just slightly 'message' oriented, I am far more delighted by their stylistic guitar, harmonica, and lyric abilities.
Track 11, Kennedy Rose sings More Than One Night A Year. A creative song with a strong bass drive to it as she soulfully sings of a world as one on a special night of the year.
Contrasting that, things take a decidely lighter turn on the last two tracks. First, Dread Zeppelin does All I Want For Christmas. Well-known for their trademark Elvis/Zeppelin-like rock/reggae mix of sound, they don't disappoint here, characterizing an ever-hungry Elvis doing his thing. Tongue-in-cheek, humorous, and just musical enough to enjoy without being taken too seriously. Finally, Wall of Voodoo wraps things up with Shouldn't Have Given Him a Gun for Christmas. If there's one song I have to pick for liking the least, it would have to be this one. It's not a total bust, but the theme of someone getting shot at Christmas during an argument is not very celebratory of the holiday. A little too much dysfunction happening in these verses for my tastes.
All in all, a stellar collection for alternative fans of the 80's.
Some essential tracks, and then some filler..........2005-01-14
This seems to be out of print now, but is worth picking up if you can find a good price on a used one. Several of the songs by the more well-known artists are available on other compilations. (The songs by Squeeze, Timbuk 3, and Wall of Voodoo can all be found on "Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Christmas".) The dB's "Home For the Holidays" is hard to find anywhere else.
For the record, I get a kick out of Dread Zeppelin's Elvis-meets-reggae-meets-Zeppelin-meets-Spike-Jones-with-a-touch-of-Zappa "...My Two Front Teeth", but most people I've played it for find it annoying.
Also for the record, Klark Kent is actually Stewart Copeland of the Police.
Have an alternative Christmas.......2004-11-21
If you like any of the bands on this album, it is worth picking up. It has many unique, original Christmas songs as well as a few classics. Plus, the bands with whom I'm familiar stay very close to their styles here. Squeeze provides a very Squeeze-like "Christmas Day" while "Cool Yule" is a cute, quirky tune by Rebel Pebbles. "Hark" is a very unique take on "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" while Steve Hunter's "We Three Kings" is a very traditional, instrumental version of the classic. "Silent Night" is given a lot of soul by Molly Johnson & Norman Orenstein. "Every Day Will Be Like a Holiday" by Reckless Sleepers is a 1950s style song. The worst track by far is "All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth." It is a very silly song by Dread Zeppelin where the singer tries to be funny by imitating Elvis and shifting the song into a rendition of "Viva Las Vegas." It does not work.
Here are my favorites on this album: "Home for the Holidays" is a very catchy number by the dB's. In fact, I find myself humming it around the holidays (and even at other times of the year). "It only Comes Once a Year" by Deborah Holland is also very pleasant and catchy and "More Than One Night a Year" by Kennedy Rose has a dark beauty to it. It is my favorite track on this album. Timbuk 3's "All I Want for Christmas" (not the "two front teeth" song but an original song about world peace) is also excellent with beautiful acoustic guitar. It is very Timbuk 3, so fans of the band will no doubt like it. Not a favorite track of mine, but Klark Kent's style sounds so much like Stan Ridgway on "Yo ho ho" that I've scoured the album cover several times looking for Ridgway's name (not to be found). Speaking of Ridgway, his old band's offering of "Shouldn't Have Given Him a Gun for Christmas" is a riot. Fans of Andy Prieboy era Wall of Voodoo will love this track. It sounds like it could have fit very snugly on Seven Days in Sammystown. For an alternative Christmas, get Just in Time for Christmas.
Delightful!.......2003-12-08
A great alternative to the muzak of Manheim Steamroller and et al...
I just wish that Amazon.com would have it in stock!

From CD review section SOUND JUDGMENT Detroit Free Press, Sunday, December 4, 2005 by F. P. special writer Martin Bandyke .......2005-12-11
Does holiday music Brazilian-style sound like an oil-and-water combination? Not in the capable, inventive hands of local act Brazil And Beyond, who explore a wide range of material on their multifaceted new release.
Giving B&B a distinctive sound is its frequent use of the cavaquinho, a small soprano member of the guitar family, played by leader Rich K (Kowalewski), who started the band in 1999. Kowalewski is an in-demand studio musician and teaches a bass master class at Oakland University.
Also setting that lilting Latin mood are Ken Braun, who plays the cavaquinho, guitar, and percussion; Frank Marinello on guitars; Rob Emanuel on drums and percussion, and Dennis Sheridan on an array of percussion instruments.
Even the most traditional Christmas tunes are cleverly reimagined, such as "The First Noel," on which Rich K plays the melody on bass, and "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" and "Carol of the Bells" featuring him on mandolin. Warm renditions of "Winter Wonderland" and "We Three Kings" are sure to make you feel like you're enjoying the holidays on a beach in Rio de Janeiro.
The medleys of "Chanukah Folktune"/"I Have a Little Dreydl" and "Little Drummer Boy"/"Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies" are nothing short of charming, as is the sunny take of "Happy Happy Kwanzaa"

Not Just For Chanukah.......2002-01-07
Without a doubt, this is one of my all-time favorite albums, and it's not just for Chanukah; I listen to it throughout the year.
The female vocals are both beautiful and haunting, especially the song Yodim Atem; it literally brings tears to my eyes. But this is also a fun album, a great sing-along for everyone.
Even my non-Jewish friends fell in love with it! I must admit I'm not too keen on the 3 kids songs on the album [ Dreidel,
Take a Potato, Mattathias -- possibly because I've heard them too much ] but the kids love them. Simply a must-have album!

Album Description
Just In Time For Christmas by singer and actor Andrew Driscoll is a wonderful assortment of some of your favorite classics and terrific new tunes. From the ridiculously funny "What Can You Get A Wookiee(When He Already Owns A Comb?)" featuring a barbershop quartet, an Elvis imitation, and a verse "sung" by Chewbacca himself to the traditional "Oh Holy Night" to the jazzy "The Christmas Song" to the pop duet and title track "Just In Time For Christmas" this recording is a perfect gift for the lover of holiday songs.

Wookiee Mania!!.......2001-09-30
I bought this recording for one reason, and one only....I am a die-hard Star Wars fan! When I saw that this artist, Andrew Driscoll had done a version of "What Can You Get A Wookiee For Christmas (When He Already Has A Comb?)", I just had to hear it. The only other version I have heard was from the out-of-print Star Wars Christmas album, and I must say really stunk. Driscoll's version is exciting, interesting, and yes, purely RIDICULOUS!!! When listening to this song, I can only envision the music video which I am sure will follow eventually. Starting off with a barbershop quartet of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, C3PO, and Yoda...followed by Han Solo doing an Elvis impersonation (hilarious)....followed by a verse of Chewbacca singing? and doing a soft shoe. This one will be hilarious!! The rest of the recording was a great surprise. It is a mixture of holiday favorites like The Christmas Song, Oh Holy Night, and Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas and very good songs I have not heard before like Just In Time For Christmas and We Can Be Kind. Check this one out...even if you aren't a Star Wars fan!
Just In Time For Christmas...INDEED!.......2001-09-30
I originally saw Mr. Driscoll perform while promoting his first recording, What I Am. When Just In Time For Christmas came out, I thought it would be a perfect gift holiday gift. This recording is a great collection of songs I already knew and loved like O Holy Night, Little Drummer Boy, and Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, but it also has some terrific new songs like Just In Time For Christmas and We Can Be Kind. The highlight of this recording for my kids (5 and 7) though has been What Can You Get A Wookiee For Christmas. They listen to just about everyday! I would recommend this to CD to everyone who enjoys holiday music or are looking for a gift for someone who does.

Customer Reviews:
Eclectic McCormack.......1998-09-10
This is a most interesting collection of McCormack in song. Many of these songs sung by McCormack on this disk I have heard him sing for the first time. McCormack sounds a bit awkward with his singing of The Battle Hymn of the Republic, and God Bless America. I rate this recording 3 stars not because if McCormack's defencies, but because of some of the poor quality 78rpm transfers. All the pops and hisses remain. A good digital transfer eliminates this annoyance so one can further enjoy McCormack's wonderful artistry. To hear McCormack's voice truly rise from the grave, I strongly recommend: McCormack in Song, Released by Nimbus
