Let's Get Lost
Editorial Reviews

Like George Gershwin and Cole Porter, the music of Jimmy McHugh is an essential part of the American popular song canon, and jazz musicians have always been the canon's greatest interpreters. On this CD, New Orleans-born trumpeter Terence Blanchard delivers fresh renditions of McHugh's songs with four of the brightest singers on the scene. The cool Canadian chanteuse Diana Krall tickles the title track with her Shirley Horn-like vocals and pianisms, while Jane Monheit graces the ballad "Too Young to Go Steady" and the bouncy "I Can't Give You Anything but Love" with her quiet-storm phrasing. Dianne Reeves's powerful voice imbues "I Can't Believe You're in Love with Me" and the midtempo "Can't Get Out of This Mood" with new emotional colors. Cassandra Wilson's down-South delivery transforms "Don't Blame Me" and "Sunny Side of the Street" into slow-drag and tango-tinged numbers. Blanchard's instrumental versions of "You're a Sweetheart" and "Lost in a Fog," with the tenor saxophonist Brice Winston, are lyrical in their own jazzy ways. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Barbara Cook is one of today's most accomplished song stylists, and if you don't believe us, just listen to this live album. It's a master class in the art of singing. It documents an evening at Carnegie Hall during which Cook proved that she can dissect and extract the substance out of the simplest of lyrics. One of the best surprises is "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" (from Company), which is taken at an amiable trot and allows the singer to display its humor. Cook is not a swinging singer and uptempo is not her pace; give her a ballad, though, and she'll wring the last drop of emotion out of it. Her version of "Losing My Mind" (here paired with "Not a Day Goes By") is simply astonishing. The singer also performs songs that Sondheim has said he wished he had written, an awful lot of them by Harold Arlen. No complaints here. Guest Malcolm Gets solos on a few songs and duets with Cook on others, including "Let's Face the Music and Dance." This is classic material done masterfully by a classic singer. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Wow!.......2004-02-20
Having read the other reviews there is little more for me to add. I have been a Barbara Cook fan for a longtime and for me, this is one of her best concerts ever. I do, however, prefer the DVD. As with some other reviewers, I do not want to hear Malcolm Gets (as much as I like him) when I want to listen to Barbara. Her flawless interpretation of music is a hard act to follow for any singer! I managed to see this concert 4 times over a year and a half. Each time I saw her the voice was stronger and more assured (I would not have thought that possible). I can't help but think we will have the pleasure of hearing Ms Cook for many years to come. For those people who enjoyed his CD I strongly recommend purchasing the DVD. Barabara's rendition of So Many People is breathtaking (literally, I don't think I breathed once during the entire song). If you ever have opportunity to see her live - go! She has an ability to make you feel as if every song she sings and every word she speaks is directed to you alone. She can take a large venue and make it feel as intimate as your own living room. Having had the pleasure of meeting her I can say she is as youthful and pleasurable in person as she is in her performance.
Everyone Should Whistle.......2003-10-11
After being privileged to attend this concert, I had to own the CD. Once a lyric coloratura and the original Cunegonde in Bernstein's Candide, Ms. Cook has become (in her 70s) a true diva, blessed with a velvety, warm sound. Every note has meaning. Her high B-flat on "Ice Cream" is still the envy of any soprano today. Everyone should whistle after hearing the superb performances on this CD. Even better, though, is the experience of having been in the concert hall for the live performance. Brava, Ms. Cook!
An amazing intro to the body of work of a true master.......2003-06-16
When I first bought tickets for the 'Mostly Sondheim' show on tour (in San Francisco) I figured it couldn't be too bad. Besides, I had only been exposed to a few of his songs (Anyone Can Whistle, Losing My Mind...) and had only seen "A Little Night Music". On the way out of the theater I immediately picked up this recording of the program. It is truly amazing. I immediately began listening to it and have barely put it down in the last few months. Furthermore, my Sondheim CD collection increased in size from an unflattering zero to five (and it's still growing)! This is an amazing introduction to the works of Stephen Sondheim, who is now my favorite modern musical composer). Buy this now if you don't already have it!
Beautiful, moving concert.......2003-04-13
This is a wonderful CD set with a great selection of songs. I do want to express a slight reservation, however. Barbara Cook has been one of my favorite singers for a number of years and the way her voice defies time is extraordinary -- for her to be singing with such bright, beautiful tone in her mid-70s with no wobble or beat in the voice is an amazing achievment.
I do have to say that by 2001, when this concert was recorded, Cook seemed to have a lost a little bit of power and intensity in her singing. This is only natural for someone of her age. Her voice is still lovely, but you can sense her keeping it in reserve a bit. She's as expressive as ever, but compare the rendition of "I got lost in his arms" on this album to the one on her previous album recorded in 1999, "The Champion Season", and there's less urgency and vocal depth in her singing here. That said, the high B at the end of "Ice Cream" is sensational.
So, despite that caveat, this is, again, a wonderful album, a must for Cook fans, especially for the gorgeous renditions of songs I'd never thought I'd get to hear her perform: "Not a Day Goes By", "Happiness/Loving You", "San Francisco", etc. Buy it!
... and I love Barbara Cook.......2003-02-11
This recording is a disappointment for me. It is not her best work, and Malcolm Gets is uninspired. My biggest complaint however is the engineering of the recording. Throughout the speaking was to soft, the singing volumes uneven, and the applause deafening. I will be passing this CD on to friends, and will later donate it to my local library.

Customer Reviews:
Stick to the standards, T!.......2004-10-29
Terence Blanchard is undoubtedly one of the top jazz performers of our time, regardless of instrument. However (and this is just my opinion), I don't care much for his original material. I much prefer releases in which he interprets other writers' works (e.g., The Billie Holliday Songbook, The Heart Speaks). So you can only imagine how much I enjoy listening to Let's Get Lost. This CD is outstanding not just in the interpretations, arrangements and production (all are flawless), but Blanchard has surrounded himself with four wonderful vocalists to support his vision of McHugh's standards.
This is one of my favorite late-night CD's. Blanchard's tone, as always, is pure, clean and sweet. I was introduced to several McHugh songs that I hadn't heard before. With over 60 minutes of quality performances, it is simply too hard to pick out a favorite cut. Quality stuff - Daddy like. Also check out the other two Blanchard CD's mentioned above.
Great!.......2004-09-11
I bought this bec. of Jane Monheit, and it is well worth it.
the other artists are great in their own right.
One word to describe this CD "Sweet".......2004-05-31
The reason i bought this CD is because it features my favourate vocalist Diane Reeves but when hearing what a wonderful Trumpeter Mr Blanchad is I was speechless. The CD opens win with marvelous rendition 'lets get lost' with Diana Krall on vocals & as usually known she never fails to impress whether u like her voice or not She is gonna be here in this world of Jazz for a long time to come. The show stopper for me is "too young to get steady" with Jane Monheit on vocals how! what a sweet voice with Blanchad swaying & swerving his trumpet so soulfully. "You are a sweetheart" is the best instrumental song for me & "Lost in a fog a 9 min. plus track will take u from your living room to some other place u have never been. Now Diane Reeves adds a wonderful rendition on " I cant believe you are in love with me" she is also very convincing on "Cant get out of this mood" like as if she is acting u hear the voice of a person who is really into something she really cant believe why cant it stop.Ms Wilson has a surprisingly baritone & yet feminine voice i was very surprised on "dont blame me". The supporting cast is very good esp. the bass, tenor sax & drums.Overall this CD is a MUST HAVE as ALL songs are beautiful. Its very funny that I have never actualy been attracted to the trumpet as an instrument(with exception to Miles Davis) but after hearing this CD I have definately changed my mind. This CD appeals to R&B, jazz,Soul fans as it is delivered not really in the traditional jazz settings but relaxed mood jazz.one reviewer is concerned about this CD being "watered down jazz compared to Blanchad previous works" if I may say. My replication to that is, not everyone likes "traditional jazz" i.e hardcore renditions. As time goes by we need someone to bring new life to these "standards" songs & that person in this case is none other than Terence Blanchad if U wanna enjoy this CD thouroghly ,play it in the late evenings or early mornings when the noise from the streets is less. Go on & invest on this CD you won't be disappointed.
Wonderful Surprise.......2004-05-21
One of my first SACD purchase I made from Amazon, having no idea who Mr Blanchard is and his style of music...However, what a wonderful surprise this has been and still the SACD is one of my favourite album. The stellar cast of singers and musician and the quality sound made this an excellent album to spin, especially late at night. For those with 'audiophilic' persuasion, an excellent disc to spin for your system.
Dad's Favorite!.......2003-07-06
I bought this as a Father's Day present for my Dad who is a jazz-lover extraordinaire. He went on and on about what a great CD this was, and how all the artists represented were an incredible collection of talent. I like jazz myself, but Dad LOVES it. And he loves this CD.

Jazz That Anyone Can Love.......2006-08-19
Not all of Chet Bakers CD's are worth having but this one is. The beauty is in the fragility of his singing voice. Similar to Johnny Cash's later recordings you can hear the life that the voice has lived as it sings. His playing is also beautifully fragile and perfect all at the same time. I've probably over analysed everything here :) I just really liked this CD.
my favorite record.......2005-11-16
This one never gets old for me. Chet made a lot of lousy albums, presumably feeding his heroin habit, but this is a masterpiece. He seems to own the songs -- the emotion pours out of them like he wrote them all himself -- but they're never saccharine. The rest of the quartet, while superb, lets him take center stage where he belongs for one of the last recordings of his life. Don't miss it.
Why is this out of print?.......2005-07-29
What can I say about this record? Its brilliant yet unassuming. Chet feels vulnerable and damaged and very sincere. One of my all time favorite records. It is suitable for all ages, anytime with anyone for all occasions. Off-key and clumsy but very easy on the ears and the mood.
One of the very best Chet Baker records.......2005-06-22
This is one of the 2 very best Chet Baker records (the other one is "Chet"). And it is the music from the best music documentary film I have ever seen: the wonderful film by Bruce Weber with the same title.
A TIMELESS ARTIST NEAR THE END OF HIS LIFE..........2003-12-20
This album consists of the tracks Baker recorded especially for the Bruce Weber documentary `Let's get lost' - a retrospective of the life of the great horn player and vocalist. Baker's life was troubled - his drug addiction is legendary, and ultimately caused his death, directly or indirectly, as the individual chooses to view the events. His musical genius is indisputable - and these recordings are an incredible witness to that. The group accompanying Baker (featured here on trumpet & vocals) is a small one: Frank Strazzeri (piano), John Leftwich (bass), Ralph Penland (drums & percussion) and Nicola Stilo (guitar & flute). There are standards a-plenty here - songs that will be loved forever by the likes of Duke Ellington & Billy Strayhorn, Cole Porter, Johnny Burke & Jimmy VanHuesen, Antonio Carlos Jobim - as well as a tune by none other than Elvis Costello, just to show that great ones are still being written.
Baker was always a fine vocalist - and no one else sounds quite like him. There are times when it sounds like he's hanging onto the notes by his fingernails - but there's never a moment (here, or in anything I've ever heard him sing) when he sounds detached from the song. Every one of his performances is filtered through his heart and soul - and that's a beautiful thing to experience. Without taking such extreme liberties that the melody is unrecognizable (as many who style themselves `jazz vocalists' seem to do), Baker lovingly caresses each tune and makes it his own. The sheer intimacy that Baker is able to express in the love songs makes the listener feel like he or she is eavesdropping on a conversation from the next table in a dimly lit, wee-hours jazz club - and it's a privilege to share such raw, honest feelings.
The players are perfect in their support here - Baker's voice is the center of every arrangement, but with an instrument as magnetic as the singer possesses, how could it be otherwise? His trumpet playing is as fine as ever, even at this late stage of the game. It's sometimes sad to listen - there's pain so clearly and eloquently expressed in every song - but there's an unnamable joy present as well, for what a gift it is that he shares with us!
Weber's documentary is hard to watch as well - Baker's life was a hard one, filled with pain and sorrow, for which he turned to heroin. It's heartbreaking to witness someone hurting so much - but his music is without question of the timeless variety, and something to be treasured.

Customer Reviews:
Great Album, but No Vocal Fireworks.......2005-09-20
This is a beautfully rendered album and Joni's voice is pitch perfect. She sings every note as written. But she takes no interpretive chances and there's no vocal fireworks. The real accomplishment here are the splendid arrangements by Jeffrey Osborne and Geoff Love - two men who never met a huge orchestra they didn't like. The lush, layered arrangements are spectacular. The musicians are also first rate and for such a large gathering there's a fantastic cohesiveness. Though her singing is pleasant enough, Joni's voice is basically the 101st instrument in the entire ensemble.
Great Standards!!.......2003-02-15
This is a great album of classic standards with lush orchestrations. Joni's voice is incredibly smooth and expressive and the selections are some of the best of the Jerome Kern era of classic songwriters. My favorite is Imagination. Best version I have ever heard...as a matter of fact many of the tunes are my benchmark arrangements. If you are a fan of the 30's-50's classic love songs and ballads, this is for you!! Great for Valentines Day. Romantic stuff. This was one of my favorite albums on vinyl as a kid. Now I can get the CD. Yeah!
Joni James at Abbey Road!.......2002-07-23
Miss Joni James swept away on a veritable ocean of violins!
This classic LP remastered in pristine sound with tender torch tunes rendered "close to the microphone" by one of the 1950s most popular singing icons. Recorded in London at the famous Abbey Road studios with those lush, sweeping Acquaviva arrangements. Joni's most divine moment! (Tacked on to the original album are 6 tracks, also with the 100 Strings orchestra, of songs from her Jimmy McHugh tribute LP.)

Customer Reviews:
Let's get lost in her dreamy voice.......2003-12-10
Not many singers are worthy of that phrase "jazz diva", but Miss Whitfield is, she delivers all of her songs(which are jazz standards), with thier original verses. She always is backed by tasteful small jazz combos lead by her hubby Mike Grinsell, and she improvises moderately, and has a bell like clarity to her singing. She has a style all her own, not to mention great diction. Those who appriciate good caberet singer, or jazz singers will enjoy this fine set of Jimmy McHugh standards.
A beuatiful tribute to Jimmy McHugh.......2003-11-30
Jimmy McHigh wrote many songs that were popular and catchy in the 30's, and they were sung by the lieks of Billie Holiday, Helen Ward, and recently by Darrel Sherman And Banu Gibsin, and now we have Wesla's turn. she turns these warhorses into fresh new creations, using jazz improv and by adding thier never before or rarely sung verses(which complete the story to the songs). Let's get Lost is one of teh finest cuts on the album, but every track is a gem, you will listen to this hundreds of times, a perfect seduction album, because it's so romantic, thanks to Mike's arragemtns and Wesla's sultry voice. The BEST cd I can thin of for an evening of romance.
WOW!!! The GREATest singer EVER!!!!!.......2002-04-18
You have got to be as cold as ice not to LOVE, the romantic stylings of Wesla Whitfoeld, her voice is hauntingly gorgeous, not to mention she has perfect pitch and diction. she also has a special gift of bringing out the inner beauty of every songs she sings. Here she sings songs by Jimmy McHugh, her style is faultless, and her arrangements immaculately done by her husband jazz pianist Mike greensill, WOW! does he ever know how to make wesla's voice sound romantic! This cd, as are all of Whitfield/Greensill collaborations is highly recommended. Wesla never forgets those beautiful verses that other jazz singers today always leave out. This cd is definately recommended to those who love good jazz, and who have loads of class!
She really knows how to bring out a song's inner beauty!.......2002-04-12
Weslia(or I guess NOW Wesla)Whitfield is a very classy jazz influenced cabaret singer, who truly knows how to bring out the inner beauty in each song she sings. She also ALWAYS sings the verses to songs, which is why she's earned the respect of other jazz musicians and singers, as well as the rare fan, who likes to hear these rare verses(like me). On this cd she sings the songs of Jimmy McHugh, she is most effective on ballads where she can really get into the lyrics, and show off her perfect pitch. Her great sense of swing really shows on I've Got My Fingers Crossed. This set really works for it's got it's fair share of ballads, and swingers, and Whitfield is a more then able swing siger too! Here(and always) she's backed by her hubby on piano, who leads a nice jazz combo. The other nice thing is all of Whitfield's cd's even though she doesn't do too much improvising she's always backed up by the finest jazz musicians today. This cd is a nice place to start to discover the magis of Miss Whitfield(although all of her recordings are worth picking up, and one is just about as good as the other) Recommened, especially for those who like to hear those wonderful verses!
A TRIBUTE DONE WITH GOOD TASTE.......2001-08-04
Fine musical approach ,with musicians obviously enjoying themselves with the arrangments letting all of them shine with appropriate solos. Our singer sings her best, but i must admit that the tendancy to let the final notes go on forever gets annoying at times.I would not have been honest if i didn't mention this. It's hard to erase from our memory LOUIS ARMSTRONG's version of ON THE SUNNY SIDE OF THE STREET,even with the added verse included here.Every other aspect of this cd is done with good taste ,and JIMMY McHUGH certainly deserve a tribute like this one.Now miss WHITFIELD,how about a tribute to WALTER DONALDSON or VINCENT YOUMANS?That would be nice.
